VDOT has scheduled road construction and maintenance across several Virginia districts for the week of Oct. 12–16, 2026. Work may mean daytime flagging or shoulder activity, as well as overnight lane, ramp, bridge, or tunnel restrictions. These are planned windows, not guarantees: weather and other conditions can change schedules. Check Virginia 511 shortly before traveling for current traffic and work-zone updates.

Where VDOT has published work schedules for Oct. 12–16

The notices below cover different districts and reporting periods; they are not a single statewide closure list. Some alerts begin before Oct. 12 or continue after Oct. 16. Treat each location and time as a scheduled work item, then confirm whether it is active on Virginia 511.

District and alert period Scheduled work relevant to the week
Salem, Oct. 9–16 District-wide routine maintenance includes paving and surface treatment, pavement markings, ditching and drainage, pipe replacement, mowing and brush removal, bridge inspections, and guardrail repairs. Project work includes I-81 bridge rehabilitation and ramp work with nighttime closures. In Roanoke County, daytime flagging is listed on Route 221 (Bent Mountain Road), between Poage Valley Road and Crystal Creek Drive, for utility installation through October. Salem District covers Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke counties.
Hampton Roads, Oct. 11–17 notice At the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, the notice lists an eastbound single-lane closure pattern overnight Oct. 12–18 and a westbound single-lane closure Oct. 13, both scheduled for 9 p.m.–5 a.m. It also lists intermittent stoppages and single-lane closures related to the HRBT expansion. The eastbound schedule extends beyond Oct. 16.
Fredericksburg, Oct. 11–17 Scheduled examples include mobile I-95 bridge-inspection lane closures in Stafford, nighttime soil sampling, pavement-marker and rumble-strip installation near Exit 143, a Rappahannock River bridge inspection, and noise-barrier installation near Exit 126. Workdays and hours differ by activity; consult the district alert and 511 for the item affecting your trip.
Staunton, Oct. 12–16 Examples include daytime shoulder closures for ditch cleaning on I-64, mile markers 0–14, in Alleghany County; weekday shoulder closures for sign work on Route 60 Business; and overnight northbound I-81 paving between mile markers 174 and 177 in Rockbridge County. The notice also lists weekday flagging for maintenance on other local and secondary roads.
Bristol, Oct. 12–18 Ongoing I-81 bridge rehabilitation and lane restrictions are listed in Smyth and Wythe counties. The alert specifies a 14-foot width restriction at bridge rehabilitation near mile marker 68. This alert period continues through Oct. 18.
Culpeper, Oct. 12–16 District-wide plans include bridge and guardrail maintenance, brush and tree cutting, pothole, surface and shoulder repairs, surface treatment and paving, mowing, drainage work, roadside cleanup, and other work orders. The notice says its date and time ranges indicate when work is scheduled, not when it will be completed; it does not provide a location-by-location schedule in the reviewed content.

What the notices mean for your trip

Allow for more than a full lane closure

Road work can affect travel through flaggers, shoulder closures, mobile inspection crews, intermittent stoppages, or ramp and lane restrictions. A work zone may therefore affect a route even when a full road closure is not listed. Pay attention to signs and flaggers, and leave extra time where your route overlaps a scheduled activity.

Keep district and direction attached to each detail

For example, the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel notice distinguishes eastbound and westbound overnight work, while Staunton identifies a northbound I-81 paving segment. A route number alone is not enough to determine whether a notice affects your direction or portion of the trip.

Expect schedules to change

VDOT districts caution that planned work can shift because of weather and other conditions; Staunton also notes possible material-supply changes. Hampton Roads District’s Oct. 9, 2026 weekly traffic alert says, “All work is scheduled weather permitting.” A listed time is a planned work window, not confirmation that a closure will be in place when you arrive.

Check live Virginia traffic and work-zone conditions

  1. Open Virginia 511 on the web, or use the Virginia 511 mobile app or phone service identified in VDOT’s district notices.
  2. Check your route and direction close to departure, focusing on the relevant district, route, bridge or tunnel, and scheduled work window.
  3. Recheck if your trip is later in the day or conditions change; planned schedules can be revised.
  4. Follow posted work-zone signs and flagger directions on the road, even if an earlier schedule showed different timing.

Coverage and schedule limitations

VDOT’s weekly-alert index also lists notices for Lynchburg and Northern Virginia, but detailed schedules for those areas were not confirmed here. Richmond’s Oct. 9 notice points readers to a separate construction forecast and Virginia 511 without itemized work details in the notice. For those areas, use Virginia 511 rather than relying on an incomplete list. District notices also vary in date range: Bristol’s runs through Oct. 18, while Salem’s begins Oct. 9 and Hampton Roads and Fredericksburg list Oct. 11–17.
