You can control a lamp over the internet with MQTT Dash only if the lamp or a lamp-side bridge/controller accepts MQTT commands, both clients can reach the same broker, and you have a secure remote route to that broker. MQTT Dash is the dashboard client; it does not make an ordinary Wi-Fi or mains lamp MQTT-compatible by itself.
How the connection works
MQTT is a publish/subscribe messaging protocol over TCP/IP. MQTT Dash publishes a command to a broker; the lamp, bridge, or controller subscribes to the corresponding topic and acts on the message. The broker coordinates messages between connected clients. The Home Assistant MQTT documentation explains broker configuration and recommends its Mosquitto broker app for Home Assistant deployments: Home Assistant MQTT integration.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Dashboard: MQTT Dash, configured as an MQTT client.
- Broker: A reachable MQTT server that both the dashboard and lamp-side client can connect to.
- Lamp-side device: A lamp with MQTT support, a bridge or Home Assistant integration that translates MQTT messages, or a DIY controller configured for the lamp.
The command topic and payload are device- or firmware-specific. Home Assistant’s MQTT light integration documents supported schemas and command-topic behavior, but it does not make one topic or payload universal: Home Assistant MQTT light.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a lamp-control route
The lamp already supports MQTT
Use the topic and payload specified by the lamp or firmware documentation. Confirm whether the device expects an on/off command, a particular schema, or additional fields. Do not assume that a lamp advertised as Wi-Fi-enabled accepts MQTT directly.

A bridge or Home Assistant controls the lamp
Use the bridge’s documented MQTT support or Home Assistant’s MQTT light integration to connect the command topic to the lamp. The integration’s available schema and state behavior depend on the device configuration; use the integration documentation and the device’s own requirements rather than a guessed topic.
You are building a controller
ESPHome documents an MQTT client for ESP32 and configuration fields for the broker host, username, and password, along with TLS-related certificate guidance: ESPHome MQTT client. An ESP32 development board is only a possible controller component, not a complete lamp-control kit. The project also needs suitable firmware and switching hardware designed for the lamp. Mains wiring requires appropriate electrical expertise and safety practices; the MQTT documentation is not a wiring guide.

Set up the broker and lamp-side command
- Identify the lamp path. Establish whether the lamp itself speaks MQTT, is controlled through a bridge or Home Assistant, or needs a DIY controller. Obtain its documented command topic and payload.
- Configure a broker. In a Home Assistant setup, add the MQTT integration and supply the broker hostname or IP address, port, and any required credentials. Home Assistant recommends its Mosquitto broker app for this deployment and notes that credentials can be created during setup. Current integration details, including broker protocol requirements, can change with software releases; consult the linked integration documentation.
- Configure the lamp-side client. Set the lamp, bridge, or controller to connect to that broker and subscribe to the documented command topic. Configure state feedback separately if the device supports it.
- Configure MQTT Dash. Enter the same broker connection details and create a control that publishes the lamp’s documented topic and payload. The current MQTT Dash screens, field names, security options, and availability are not established here, so verify them against current authoritative app documentation before relying on a specific interface path.
- Test locally first. While the phone and lamp-side client are on the home network, send a command and verify that the lamp responds. If state reporting is configured, check that separately; a successful command does not by itself prove that feedback is working.
Make the broker reachable remotely without treating exposure as security
When you leave home, MQTT Dash still needs a network route to the broker, either directly through a secured broker connection or through a remote-access service. Home Assistant Cloud provides a remote URL and encrypts traffic automatically without router port forwarding, according to its remote access documentation. Home Assistant also describes TLS/SSL and VPN or SSH-tunnel approaches in its security guidance.
Do not assume that making a broker port accessible from the internet makes it safe. Home Assistant explicitly cautions against relying on an exposed port alone. Its security guidance recommends strong, unique account passwords, multi-factor authentication, keeping the installation updated, and choosing a secure remote-access method.

If you use direct MQTT access, verify that the broker and client support the security features you intend to use. Home Assistant’s MQTT integration documents broker credentials, certificate validation, client certificates, and secure WebSockets when supported by the broker. MQTT Dash’s current support for these options is not established here, so do not configure remote access on the assumption that it offers a particular TLS or certificate feature.

What to check when a remote command fails
- No connection to the broker: Check the broker host, port, credentials, and whether the selected remote route actually allows the phone to reach the broker.
- The client connects but the lamp does not respond: Recheck the exact topic and payload, and confirm that the lamp-side client is subscribed to that topic on the same broker.
- The lamp responds locally but not remotely: The MQTT command path works on the home network; investigate the remote URL, VPN or tunnel, or secured broker route rather than changing the lamp command first.
- The lamp changes state but the dashboard does not: Check whether state feedback is configured and whether the dashboard is subscribed to the correct state topic. Command delivery and state reporting are distinct message flows.
