Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To disconnect a soundbar properly, do two things: switch the TV’s audio output to TV Speakers or Internal Speakers, then remove the active connection—HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, analog, or Bluetooth. Unplugging the soundbar’s power alone stops it working but may leave the TV sending audio to an external speaker.
The quickest way to disconnect a soundbar
- Turn on the TV and open Settings, then look for Sound, Audio, or Sound Output.
- Select TV Speakers, Internal Speakers, or the equivalent option.
- If the soundbar uses Bluetooth, select it in the paired-device list and choose Disconnect, Forget, Unpair, or Remove.
- Stop playback and turn off both devices.
- Remove the relevant HDMI, optical, or analog audio cable. Disconnect the soundbar’s power cable if you are removing it entirely.
- Turn the TV back on and test its internal speakers.
The expected result is sound from the TV itself, with the soundbar no longer receiving TV audio or automatically switching to the TV input.

| Connection | What to look for | What to disconnect |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | An HDMI cable in the TV port labelled ARC or eARC, connected to the soundbar’s TV or ARC port | The HDMI cable, plus Bluetooth if both methods are active |
| Optical | A thin fibre-optic cable connected to Optical OUT on the TV and Optical IN on the soundbar | The optical cable |
| Bluetooth | No audio cable; the soundbar appears in the TV’s Bluetooth or speaker list | The active connection and, if needed, the saved pairing |
| Analog | Red-and-white RCA plugs or a 3.5mm audio cable | The analog audio cable |
Some owners use both HDMI and Bluetooth without realising it. If both connect the same TV and soundbar, removing only one may not stop the other from carrying audio or reconnecting. Sony recommends disconnecting Bluetooth separately in this situation: Sony’s Bluetooth and HDMI guidance.

Disconnecting an HDMI ARC or eARC soundbar
- Set the TV’s sound output to TV Speakers or Internal Speakers.
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Remove the HDMI cable from the TV’s ARC/eARC port or the soundbar’s TV/ARC port. For a complete removal, disconnect both ends.
- Turn the TV back on and check that its internal speakers work.
HDMI ARC and eARC commonly work with HDMI-CEC, which lets devices exchange power, input, volume, and control commands. As a result, the soundbar may turn on, change inputs, or take over audio even after you change the selected speaker output.
If that happens, disable HDMI-CEC in the TV settings. The name varies by manufacturer:
- LG: SIMPLINK
- Samsung: Anynet+
- Sony: BRAVIA Sync
- Philips: EasyLink
LG explains that ARC operation can depend on both ARC and CEC support: LG’s HDMI-CEC and soundbar guidance. Disable CEC only if necessary. It may also stop the TV controlling a streaming box, game console, Blu-ray player, AV receiver, or other HDMI device.

HDMI ARC/eARC ports and labels vary by model. Sony provides examples of ARC/eARC and other soundbar connections in its connection guide.
Disconnecting an optical soundbar
- Change the TV output to TV Speakers.
- Turn off both devices.
- Remove the optical cable from the TV’s Optical OUT and the soundbar’s Optical IN.
- Restart the TV and test its speakers.
Optical normally does not provide the same HDMI-CEC power and input-control behaviour, but the TV can still remain configured to send audio externally. Changing the output setting is therefore still necessary.
Optical connectors are keyed. Pull the plug straight out without twisting, forcing, or pulling the cable itself. If you are keeping the cable, replace its protective caps to help prevent damage or dust contamination. LG advises matching the connector shape and avoiding excessive force in its soundbar connection instructions.

Disconnecting and removing a Bluetooth soundbar
Bluetooth has two different levels of disconnection:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Disconnect stops the current audio session but usually keeps the soundbar saved in the TV.
- Forget, unpair, or remove deletes the saved relationship and makes automatic reconnection less likely.
- Open Settings and look under Sound, Audio Output, Bluetooth Speaker List, or a similar menu.
- Select the soundbar.
- Choose Disconnect for a temporary change, or Forget, Unpair, or Remove for a permanent removal.
- On the soundbar, select another input or disable Bluetooth pairing mode.
If the soundbar reconnects, remove the TV from the soundbar’s remembered-device list as well, if the model provides that option. Also check for a second HDMI ARC/eARC connection. Removing a Bluetooth pairing does not remove an HDMI connection, and unplugging HDMI does not necessarily delete a saved Bluetooth pairing.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the TV has no sound after disconnecting
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the output is set to TV Speakers or Internal Speakers.
- Raise the TV volume and confirm that mute is off.
- Check whether headphones, a USB audio device, or another Bluetooth speaker is still selected.
- If HDMI was used, remove the cable from both the TV and soundbar, not just one end.
- Turn off the TV, unplug it briefly, reconnect it, and restart it.
- If the TV still behaves as though the soundbar is present, disable HDMI-CEC and restart again.
- Check digital-audio settings only if another external audio device remains connected.
If the problem persists, check the TV and soundbar for firmware updates and consult the model-specific support page. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance also emphasises checking the selected speaker output and allowing for software-version differences: Sony support.
If the soundbar keeps turning on
Persistent activation usually comes from HDMI-CEC, Bluetooth auto-reconnection, a second active connection, or another HDMI device waking the chain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Remove the HDMI ARC/eARC cable.
- Forget the TV’s Bluetooth pairing with the soundbar.
- Disable HDMI-CEC if the soundbar still powers on.
- Disable Bluetooth pairing mode on the soundbar.
- Check connected streaming boxes, consoles, and disc players for power-on or CEC behaviour.
A factory reset should not be the first response. It can erase Wi-Fi details, room calibration, remote settings, and other configuration without correcting the TV’s selected audio output.
If you are replacing, moving, or selling the soundbar
- Photograph the cable locations before removing anything.
- Label HDMI, optical, and analog cables if the setup may be recreated.
- Forget the TV’s Bluetooth pairing if you are selling or giving away the soundbar.
- Remember that a wireless subwoofer or rear-speaker kit may have its own pairing relationship. Disconnecting the TV does not necessarily unpair those accessories.
- Keep cables with the soundbar if you may reinstall it later.
- Protect optical connectors from dust and impact during storage or shipping.
Full deregistration or a factory reset is separate from disconnecting the TV. Use a reset only when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it—for example, when transferring ownership or resolving a persistent pairing problem after ordinary disconnection steps have failed.
How to reconnect the soundbar later
- HDMI: Connect the soundbar to the TV’s ARC/eARC port, select HDMI ARC or the soundbar as the audio output, and enable CEC if you want shared power and volume control.
- Optical: Connect the TV’s Optical OUT to the soundbar’s Optical IN, then select optical output on the TV and the optical input on the soundbar.
- Bluetooth: Put the soundbar into pairing mode, select it in the TV’s Bluetooth speaker list, and choose it as the audio output.
HDMI and optical provide different control and audio capabilities, and the exact result depends on both devices, their firmware, and the content source. Optical can be a useful fallback for some HDMI/CEC problems, but it is not a guaranteed fix and may remove features available through HDMI. Bose discusses HDMI/CEC troubleshooting and optical alternatives in its soundbar support guidance.
