A 4C code on a Samsung washer means the machine has detected a problem with its water supply. On some models and in some markets the same fault appears as 4E. Samsung UK’s guidance points first to the water feed: low water pressure or flow, a kinked or blocked inlet hose, or a clogged inlet mesh filter. A blocked detergent dispenser drawer can occasionally contribute too. Most of these checks take a few minutes and need no tools beyond a towel and a bucket, so work through them before considering parts or a service visit.
What the code is telling you
Samsung UK’s support page on the 4E and 4C codes, updated 28 May 2026, states: “The 4E (4C) error code indicates that the washing machine has detected a problem with the water supply.” The code describes a filling fault. It does not name a failed component, and it does not by itself tell you that the control board, valve, or pump has failed. The washer is reporting that it is not taking in water as quickly as it expects, and the job is to find out why.
Samsung’s US water-fill guidance adds a specific cause that is easy to miss: hot and cold inlet lines connected to the wrong valves. Samsung UK lists it among the points to check as well, noting that swapped lines can produce a water-supply error on models that use both connections.
Before you start
- Unplug the washer from the mains before moving it to reach the hoses.
- Turn off the water supply before disconnecting any hose or removing any screen.
- Keep the model’s user manual to hand. Hose connections, screen locations, and reset procedures differ between models, and the manual for your exact model is the final reference.
Checks to run in order
- Inspect the inlet hoses. With the washer unplugged and moved clear of the wall, look along the full length of each inlet hose for kinks, pinches, cracks, or visible obstructions. Straighten the route so the hose is not bent sharply behind the machine.
- Confirm the taps are fully open. Turn each water tap feeding the washer all the way on. Where the model uses both hot and cold connections, check that the hot line is on the hot valve and the cold line is on the cold valve.
- Clean the inlet mesh filters. Turn off the water, disconnect the hose as the manual directs, and remove the mesh screens gently. Rinse away debris, refit the screens, reconnect the hose, and check the connections are watertight before restoring the supply. Samsung UK recommends cleaning the mesh filter at least twice a year, so this step is also useful as routine maintenance.
- Clean the detergent dispenser drawer. Remove the drawer and clear any obstruction or built-up detergent from the drawer and its housing. Samsung says a blocked drawer can occasionally cause a 4C message.
- Run the washer again. If the code clears and the machine fills normally, the cause was one of the items above. If the code returns after these checks, contact Samsung Support or a qualified local appliance service provider.

When a reset helps and when it does not
Samsung Canada’s guidance on resetting its washers, updated 2 July 2026, says a reset may clear a minor software glitch. It does not correct low supply, a blockage, or an installation fault. If you reset the machine and the 4C returns, the reset has not addressed the cause, and you should return to the checks above. Repeating resets will not resolve a water-supply problem.

Replacement parts
Buy a replacement inlet mesh filter only if the original screen is damaged or missing. Cleaning is the step Samsung UK supports for a clogged screen, so a new filter is not a reasonable first purchase for every 4C. If a replacement is needed, check the model number first and confirm the part is compatible with that exact washer before ordering.
When to call Samsung or a service engineer
If the code remains after you have checked the taps, hoses, hot and cold connections, screens, and drawer, contact Samsung Support or a qualified local appliance service provider. Samsung’s support material states that service may be needed when its steps do not resolve the code. Samsung also says a reset will not fix a water-supply or installation problem, so a persistent code after the checks is a reason to book a technician rather than to keep resetting the machine.

Models and regions differ
The 4E and 4C codes are used on different models and in different markets, so the code you see is not always the exact one described here. The Samsung UK guidance gives the pressure range and mesh-cleaning interval; the US page emphasises checking for swapped supply lines; the Canadian and Latin American pages cover reset and code-specific advice respectively. Where these sources and your model manual differ on a detail, follow the manual for your model and your local Samsung support team.
