First, identify the ULTRALOQ Bolt model
Older reviews often discuss “the Bolt” as though it were one product. It is not. The following versions are the ones most relevant to Apple Home buyers:
| Model | Apple Home/HomeKit | Apple Home Key | Primary access methods | Connectivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bolt Fingerprint Apple Home edition | Yes | No | Fingerprint, PIN, app, Siri, physical key | 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth |
| Bolt Fingerprint Matter edition | Yes, through Matter | No | Fingerprint, PIN, app, physical key | Matter over Thread and Bluetooth |
| Bolt NFC HomeKey edition | Yes | Yes | Apple Home Key, Android NFC, NFC/RFID credentials, PIN, app, physical key | Wi-Fi and Bluetooth |
ULTRALOQ’s support documentation identifies Apple Home support for the Bolt Fingerprint HomeKit and Bolt Fingerprint Matter models. The current Bolt NFC product page separately advertises both Apple Home and Apple Home Key.

HomeKit is not Home Key. Apple Home/HomeKit support lets a lock appear in the Apple Home app and respond to supported commands and automations. Apple Home Key creates a Wallet-based digital key that can be tapped with a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch. The Bolt Fingerprint HomeKit and Matter editions do not offer that tap-to-unlock feature.
What the Bolt Fingerprint HomeKit edition does well
The likely subject of the original “ULTRALOQ Bolt with HomeKit Support” review is the Bolt Fingerprint Apple Home edition. Its appeal is redundancy: household members can unlock the door in several different ways instead of relying on a single phone or credential.
- Fingerprint reader: convenient for regular household members who do not want to enter a code.
- Keypad: useful for children, guests, cleaners, contractors, and service providers.
- ULTRALOQ app: handles setup, access management, firmware updates, remote features, and activity history.
- Apple Home and Siri: provides Apple Home control and supported automations.
- Apple Watch control: this should not be confused with Home Key; it can mean Apple Home control rather than Wallet-based tap-to-unlock.
- Physical key: remains an important fallback if batteries, networking, or electronics fail.
ULTRALOQ lists capacity for up to 100 fingerprints and 50 access codes on the Bolt Fingerprint line. Its compatibility listings also include Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings, and IFTTT, making it more flexible than a lock designed only for Apple households.

Local control
After setup, the Bolt can be added to Apple Home and controlled through the Home app. Local operation depends on the model, Bluetooth range, and the condition of the home network. The keypad, fingerprint reader, and mechanical key are separate local fallback methods.
Remote control
ULTRALOQ’s Apple Home setup guidance says an Apple Home hub—such as an Apple TV or HomePod—is required for remote Apple Home control of the HomeKit-supported Bolt. Without a hub, local control may work, but remote status checks, remote locking, and notifications can be limited.
Built-in Wi-Fi means the relevant Bolt does not need a separate ULTRALOQ bridge for app-based connectivity. It does not eliminate every hub requirement: Apple Home remote access still depends on the exact model, integration path, and a functioning Apple Home hub.
Automations and Siri
Practical Apple Home uses include adding the lock to a leaving-home scene, checking whether it is locked, locking it at bedtime, or triggering other devices based on lock state. These are not the same as automatic proximity unlocking. Do not assume that HomeKit support automatically provides hands-free or geofenced unlocking.

- Apple Home Certified: ULTRALOQ’s first smart lock fully integrated with Apple Home. Unlock with the Apple Home app using your iPhone or Apple Watch, and easily share access with family and guests. Add a HomePod or Apple TV as a home hub to enable automations, remote control, and Siri voice commands.
- Remote Control from Anywhere: Lock or unlock your door remotely, share access, check door status, and view activity history from your smartphone. Receive real-time alerts when the door is left open and see who entered and when. The included door sensor provides accurate door status monitoring. NOTE: Supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only; no bridge required. For optimal connectivity, keep your router within 70 ft of the lock.
- Unlock Your Way: Enjoy 7 convenient ways to unlock: Fingerprint ID stores up to 50 fingerprints, Passcodes store up to 50 codes, Smartphone App for iOS and Android, Auto Unlock, Voice Unlock with Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant, Web Portal, and 2 Backup Keys.
- Smart Home Integration: Works with Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, IFTTT, and Xthings-Home for connected smart home control. Use Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant for voice control and pair multiple Xthings-Home devices to create smart home automations. Keep the app and firmware updated and maintain a stable network connection for optimal performance.
- Auto Lock & Geofence Auto Unlock: Automatically lock your door when it closes, after a preset timer, or with the ULTRALOQ button. Unlock automatically when you arrive with your smartphone using geofence technology. Receive door left open alerts and monitor door status with the included sensor.
Apple Home is also not a complete replacement for the Xthings Home app. ULTRALOQ’s current documentation uses the name Xthings Home, while older setup material may refer to U Home. Initial setup, fingerprint enrollment, access-code management, firmware updates, activity history, and some remote settings may still require the manufacturer’s app.
Apple Home Key is the decisive limitation
For many iPhone owners, “HomeKit support” really means “Can I tap my phone or watch on the lock?” On the Bolt Fingerprint HomeKit edition, the answer is no. It can work with Apple Home and Siri, but it does not create an Apple Wallet Home Key.
The Bolt NFC HomeKey version is the ULTRALOQ model to choose if tap-to-unlock is essential. ULTRALOQ says it supports Apple Home Key through Apple Wallet and Express Mode, allowing unlocking without opening an app or authenticating first. It also supports Android NFC credentials, ULTRALOQ NFC/RFID credentials, PINs, app control, and a physical key.
The Matter Fingerprint model does not solve this limitation. Matter improves cross-platform compatibility; it does not automatically add Apple Home Key.

Installation and door compatibility
ULTRALOQ markets the Bolt as a DIY replacement for most standard U.S. residential deadbolts. Installation uses existing door preparation and does not require wiring or drilling in a compatible opening. In practice, the mechanical condition and alignment of the door matter more than the advertised installation time.
Check these measurements first
- Door thickness: 1⅜ to 1¾ inches; a Thick Door Kit supports approximately 1¾ to 2¼ inches.
- Backset: adjustable to 2⅜ or 2¾ inches.
- Door preparation: 2⅛-inch face bore and 1-inch latch bore.
- Door type: designed for standard deadbolt installations, not glass doors, sliding doors, mortise locks, or multipoint locks.
These specifications come from ULTRALOQ’s current Bolt specifications. Confirm the exact listing and included hardware for the version you are ordering.
Alignment is the installation variable that matters
Test the existing deadbolt before installing the motorized lock. It should extend and retract smoothly with the door both open and closed. A latch that rubs against the strike plate can cause failed locking, motor noise, intermittent operation, and accelerated battery drain.

Suitable for homeowners, Airbnb hosts, rental properties, and busy households seeking secure, flexible, and keyless access management
Also check the interior clearance. The Bolt’s interior assembly is relatively large, so nearby trim, windows, storm-door hardware, or a narrow door stile may interfere with installation or operation.

Fingerprint and keypad access
Fingerprint entry is the Bolt Fingerprint’s main advantage over many Apple Home-focused locks. It is quick and convenient for people who use the door every day, while keypad codes are better for temporary or shared access.
Fingerprint recognition can be affected by wet, dirty, cold, damaged, or poorly enrolled fingers. Register alternative fingers and maintain at least one working PIN and the physical key. Independent coverage from WIRED reported a testing incident in which fingerprint recognition failed and temporarily affected other unlocking methods. That is a test observation, not proof that every unit has the same problem, but it is a reason not to treat biometrics as the only fallback.
Reported experiences with battery drain and keypad behavior after extended use also vary. They should be treated as individual testing or owner reports rather than a universal defect. The sensible approach is to set up more than one access method before relying on the lock.
Battery life and Wi-Fi trade-offs
The Wi-Fi Bolt uses eight AA alkaline batteries. ULTRALOQ rates the Bolt series for up to approximately one year of everyday use, with low-battery alerts from the lock and Xthings Home app. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee.

Built-in Wi-Fi is convenient because it avoids a separate bridge, but it can demand more power than a Bluetooth- or Thread-first design.
The Bolt Fingerprint Matter edition uses Matter over Thread and Bluetooth. ULTRALOQ claims up to approximately 1.5 years for that version, compared with up to one year for the Wi-Fi model. It requires a compatible Thread border router or hub for network connectivity. Choose it when you already have a suitable Thread setup and want Matter’s broader ecosystem support—not for Home Key.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What still works when something fails?
| Problem | Likely impact | Practical fallback |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi outage | Remote control, notifications, and cloud features may stop working. | Use the keypad, fingerprint reader, Bluetooth, or physical key, depending on the model. |
| Apple Home hub offline | Remote Apple Home access and some automations may be unavailable. | Use local lock controls or the ULTRALOQ app if its connection remains available. |
| Phone battery dead | App and Siri access are unavailable. | Use a fingerprint, PIN, NFC credential where supported, or physical key. |
| Fingerprint rejected | Biometric entry fails. | Use a PIN or physical key; re-enroll clean fingerprints later. |
| Low or dead batteries | Electronic access may stop. | Replace all batteries as specified and use the mechanical key if necessary. |
| Stiff or misaligned door | Locking may fail and the motor may consume power rapidly. | Correct the latch, strike, hinges, or door fit before troubleshooting software. |
Security, privacy, and everyday management
The Bolt adds convenience; it does not make the entire door burglar-proof. The strength of the door, frame, hinges, strike plate, deadbolt installation, and surrounding glass still matter. Biometric access is not automatically more secure than a carefully managed PIN or physical key.
Use unique access codes, remove credentials when guests or contractors no longer need them, and review activity records when available. Remote status and notifications are useful, but they depend on batteries, the lock’s network connection, the vendor’s services, and—when using Apple Home remotely—the Apple Home hub.
Apple Home may expose a different set of controls from Xthings Home. Users should not expect every user, code, activity log, automation, or configuration option to appear identically in both apps.
Bolt Fingerprint HomeKit vs. Bolt Matter vs. Bolt NFC
Choose the Bolt Fingerprint Apple Home edition if:
- You want fingerprint access above all else.
- You want Apple Home scenes, Siri control, and built-in Wi-Fi.
- You need both household biometrics and guest PINs.
- You are comfortable maintaining the lock through the ULTRALOQ app as well as Apple Home.
Choose the Bolt Fingerprint Matter edition if:
- You already have a compatible Thread border router.
- Your household spans Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings.
- You prefer Matter and Thread’s ecosystem flexibility.
- You do not require Apple Home Key.
Choose the Bolt NFC HomeKey edition if:
- Tap-to-unlock with an iPhone or Apple Watch is the main reason you are buying an Apple-compatible lock.
- You want Apple Wallet and Express Mode support.
- You prefer NFC credentials over fingerprint biometrics.
How it compares with the main alternatives
| Lock | Best fit | Main difference from the Bolt Fingerprint HomeKit edition |
|---|---|---|
| Schlage Encode Plus | Apple users prioritizing a straightforward Home Key experience | Home Key is a central feature, while the Bolt Fingerprint offers more biometric-style access but lacks Home Key. |
| Aqara U100 | Apple Home users wanting Home Key, fingerprint access, and a keypad | More Home Key-oriented, with Aqara-specific setup and hub considerations for some functions. |
| Aqara U400 | Apple users interested in newer UWB-enabled hands-free features and Matter-over-Thread | More advanced and potentially more expensive; less suitable if you want a simpler fingerprint/keypad lock. |
| ULTRALOQ Bolt NFC | Buyers wanting ULTRALOQ’s ecosystem plus Apple Home Key | Adds NFC/Home Key but is not the fingerprint-focused model. |
| ULTRALOQ Bolt Matter | Cross-platform Matter households with Thread | Uses Thread rather than built-in Wi-Fi and still does not provide Home Key. |
For more comparative context on Apple Home Key and the Schlage option, see PCWorld’s Schlage Encode Plus coverage. The right choice depends less on the number of features than on the access method you will actually use and the fallbacks you are prepared to maintain.
Price and current specifications
On August 16, 2026, ULTRALOQ’s product pages displayed a $199.99 list price and a $176 promotional price for relevant Bolt listings. Promotions and availability change, so treat those figures as a dated price signal rather than a permanent price.
For the Bolt NFC, ULTRALOQ lists eight AA alkaline batteries, up to one year of battery life, 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, an exterior IP65 rating, approximately 3.5 pounds of weight, and an 18-month electronic warranty plus lifetime mechanical warranty. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results.
Final buying advice
Buy the ULTRALOQ Bolt Fingerprint Apple Home edition if you want a flexible, feature-rich deadbolt centered on fingerprint access, PINs, built-in Wi-Fi, and Apple Home control. It is especially practical for households with regular users and occasional guests.
Do not buy that edition expecting Apple Home Key. If tapping an iPhone or Apple Watch is non-negotiable, select the Bolt NFC HomeKey model or a competing Home Key lock such as the Schlage Encode Plus or Aqara U100. If you already own a Thread-capable hub and want broad Matter compatibility, the Bolt Fingerprint Matter edition is the more logical ULTRALOQ variant—but it still does not add Home Key.
