It costs substantially less, creates attractive moving ambience with fewer setup demands, and works well as a bedroom or decorative light. The Galaxy Light Projector 2 Pro is the specialist option: its film-disc system can produce sharper, more recognizable space imagery, but it costs about twice as much and needs a dark room, careful focus, and suitable placement to justify the premium.
What is the difference?
These are separate products, not two modes of the same projector. Govee places both in its broader Star Projector Light Series, alongside the standard Star Light Projector and Star Light Projector with Nebula Effect.

The Ocean Wave is a textured-light projector designed to create flowing, water-inspired patterns. The Galaxy Light Projector 2 Pro is an optical-disc projector designed to display more recognizable astronomical scenes. Calling both products “galaxy lights” hides the most important buying distinction: one prioritizes soft ambient motion, while the other prioritizes detailed projected imagery.

Projection technology and image quality
Ocean Wave: ambient motion over photographic detail
The Ocean Wave uses a dual-layer textured lens to create moving patterns intended to resemble water. Its more than 40 scenes, as listed by Govee, give it variety without requiring physical discs or precise optical alignment.
Its strength is atmosphere. The effect can look fluid, soft and decorative across a wall or ceiling, especially when the goal is relaxation or background color rather than recognizable planets and nebulae. It is not designed to reproduce photographic astronomical images, and its softer appearance should not be mistaken for a focusing problem.
Galaxy Light Projector 2 Pro: sharper disc-based scenes
The Pro 2 uses a 4MP glass lens and eight included themed film discs. When focused correctly in a dark room, it can produce more recognizable and detailed space imagery than an abstract textured-light projector.

Actual sharpness depends on focus, throw distance, the projection surface, the angle, and the amount of competing light.
Its claimed “3,200-plus scene combinations” should be understood as combinations of discs, colors, scenes and effects—not 3,200 entirely different film images. The Pro 2 offers more visual control, but the underlying physical disc library remains limited to the content you have.
Brightness and room conditions
Govee claims 230 lux for the Pro 2, but that figure is a manufacturer specification rather than a controlled independent comparison with the Ocean Wave. More importantly, a projector’s headline brightness does not guarantee good visibility in daylight or a room with the lights on.
Independent coverage found that the Pro 2 looks best in a dark room. Daylight, lamps, pale competing light sources and textured or dark surfaces reduce contrast and can make scenes look washed out. The Ocean Wave’s diffuse ambience is more forgiving because it is not trying to render sharply focused film imagery, although neither device should be treated as a bright general-purpose lamp.

Setup and placement
The Pro 2 requires more care than the Ocean Wave. For the best result:
- Place the projector where furniture, shelves and ceiling fans will not interrupt the image.
- Try both ceiling and wall projection before choosing a permanent position.
- Use a smooth, light-colored surface whenever possible.
- Keep the room as dark as practical.
- Allow enough distance for the image to spread across the intended area.
- Adjust the focus ring slowly and carefully.
Ceiling height and projection angle matter. A textured or popcorn ceiling can make a high-resolution image appear soft even when the lens is correctly focused. The Pro 2’s optical detail is therefore conditional: it can look impressive, but the room has to cooperate.
The Ocean Wave is the easier everyday product. Its design is intended for broad moving ambience rather than a sharply focused film image, so positioning is generally less demanding. That makes it a safer choice for a child’s room, casual bedroom use or anyone who wants to turn it on without optimizing the installation.
App and smart-home controls
Both products are intended to work with Govee’s app-based lighting ecosystem. Depending on the model and current software, relevant controls can include scene selection, brightness, color, movement, timers and sleep-oriented settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Pro 2’s official listing describes preset nature, universe, mood and sleep themes, two starlight motion modes, and more than 20 white-noise options. Those features make it useful as a relaxation accessory, but its white noise should not be treated as a replacement for a dedicated speaker or purpose-built sleep device.
Govee advertises smart-home integration, but exact platform support and available controls can change with firmware, app version, region and the user’s Matter controller. Check the current product listing and Govee Home app before purchase if compatibility with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa or Matter is essential.
Bedrooms, nurseries and sleep
For a bedroom, the Ocean Wave is usually the more practical pick. It supplies a gentle decorative effect, costs less and does not make the buyer depend on a limited collection of physical discs.

The Pro 2 is a better fit when the projected image itself is the attraction. Its sleep themes and white-noise options may be useful, but buyers should check whether the available brightness, movement and timer controls suit their sleeping habits. A detailed moving projection can be calming for one person and distracting for another.
For a nursery or children’s room, the Ocean Wave is the simpler recommendation because it is a soft ambient effect rather than a premium optical centerpiece. Do not rely on either product for child-safety assurances without reviewing the current manual and applicable safety information.
Gaming rooms, home theaters and parties
The Pro 2 can make a dark gaming room or social space more visually dramatic, particularly when its space imagery is projected across a clear ceiling or wall. It is best understood as decorative set dressing, not as a video projector.
It is also not a substitute for a home-theater projector. Neither device is intended to deliver movies, calibrated color, a conventional rectangular image or reliable visibility under normal room lighting.
The Ocean Wave works better as background ambience around other lighting. It is a good choice when the projector should complement a room rather than become its centerpiece.
Disc variety and long-term ownership
The Pro 2 includes eight themed film discs, and the hardware allows those discs to be swapped. That is different from having a large, actively supported expansion ecosystem.
Available independent coverage reported that the discs were proprietary and that additional replacement or expansion discs were not available for purchase at the time of testing. Do not assume third-party discs will work, and do not buy the Pro 2 expecting an endless stream of official content unless Govee currently lists that content.

- Tri-Zone Independent Lighting: Switch between upper ambient ripples, middle RGBIC light, 1000lm focused task lighting, and mixed zones for movie nights, work, or parties. The app version must be 7.0.1 or above to support the firmware updates needed to activate the upper and lower sections illumination combo.
- DIY Dynamic Ripple Lighting: The floor lamp's 330° rotating lamp head casts customizable RGBWW water ripple effects onto ceilings. Cover around 215ft² walls with 80+ scenes, ideal for tall living rooms and master bedrooms.
- Circadian Rhythm & Health-Centric Lighting: Mimic natural light with a color temperature ranging from 2,700K (Warm) to 6,500K (Cool) with "Auto Run". Program this floor lamp to boost productivity with cool tones or unwind with warm sunset hues.
- Smart Home Ready: Compatible with SmartThings, Alexa, Matter, Google Assistant, and Govee Home App. Create DIY light shows, music-reactive beats, or immersive DreamView scenes for parties (Ensure that your Wi-Fi router is 2.4GHz capable)
- Sleek Design for Any Space: This modern floor lamp features an inner tapered design with transparent black shade accents to blend with any décor. Built with rust-proof aluminum and whisper-quiet motors (<25dB) for years of stylish, quiet performance.
This is the Pro 2’s most important long-term limitation. Its scenes and effects create variety, but buyers may eventually tire of the included imagery. The Ocean Wave has less photographic detail, yet its abstract motion is not tied to a small physical disc library.
Common problems and fixes
The projection looks washed out
- Darken the room and reduce competing lamps.
- Move the projector or adjust the throw distance.
- Use a smooth white wall or ceiling.
- Refocus the lens.
- Try a different disc or scene; some images naturally have better contrast.
The Pro 2 image looks soft
Check the focus ring first, then examine the projection distance and surface texture. A popcorn ceiling, excessive distance or an angled surface can soften the image. The 4MP lens does not guarantee photographic sharpness in every installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The content does not feel as varied as advertised
Remember that the 3,200-plus figure is a combination count, not a count of unique films. The Pro 2 offers many ways to alter scenes, but only eight included physical disc themes.
Smart-home setup fails
Possible causes include an incorrect Wi-Fi setup, an app or firmware mismatch, a failed Matter commissioning attempt, platform-specific restrictions, or a device still associated with another account or controller. Use the current Govee support documentation rather than relying on an old app menu path.
Which Govee projector should you buy?
Choose the Ocean Wave if:
- You want relaxing water-like ambience rather than realistic space imagery.
- Your budget is closer to $50–$90 than $150–$180.
- The projector is for a bedroom, child’s room or casual decorative use.
- You want the easier, lower-risk purchase.
- Your room is not always completely dark.
- You prefer app scenes over physical discs.
Choose the Galaxy Light Projector 2 Pro if:
- Sharp astronomical imagery is the main reason you are buying.
- You have a dark room and a suitable wall or ceiling.
- You are comfortable adjusting focus and changing discs.
- White noise and sleep scenes are useful to you.
- You accept paying roughly twice the Ocean Wave’s normal price.
- You want a visual centerpiece rather than a basic night-light.
Choose neither if:
- You need strong visibility in daylight.
- You expect movie or video projection.
- You require a large, actively supported library of replaceable content.
- You need calibrated brightness or professional color accuracy.
- You require guaranteed compatibility with a specific smart-home platform but have not confirmed current support.
- You need a completely silent device and have no model-specific noise measurement to consult.
Other Govee options
Govee’s lineup also includes the standard Star Light Projector and the Star Light Projector with Nebula Effect. The Nebula model is positioned around independently controlled nebula zones and a low-noise claim, but that specification should not be transferred to the Ocean Wave or Pro 2. The standard model has its own scene library and visual character.
Compare the actual effect you prefer rather than assuming one model is a direct hardware replacement for another. Govee’s series page is the best starting point for distinguishing them.

The Govee Star Light Projector (Ocean Wave) is the best-value and best all-around recommendation. It is more affordable, easier to live with and better suited to everyday ambient lighting.
The Galaxy Light Projector 2 Pro is the better specialist projector. Buy it when detailed space imagery matters more than convenience, you can provide a dark and suitable room, and you find the price at a substantial discount. Its optical quality is real enough to make it visually impressive, but it does not automatically provide better everyday value, broader content or better performance in a bright room.
