Before your old TV leaves your home, test it, remove every account, complete a manufacturer reset, gather its accessories, and describe its condition honestly. The privacy step comes first: signing out of one streaming app or deleting an app is not enough.
- Identify and test the television.
- Sign out, unlink accounts, and factory-reset it.
- Clean it and gather the complete set of accessories.
- Price and list it accurately.
- Plan a safe sale, handoff, shipment, or recycling route.
1. Identify and test the TV completely
Do not list it only as a “Samsung 55-inch smart TV” or “LG flat-screen.” Find the exact model number on the rear label or in the television’s settings. Different models with the same screen size can have different panel technology, resolutions, ports, gaming features, software support, and resale values.

Record the screen size, approximate purchase date, smart-TV platform, verified resolution and panel type, included accessories, and whether the original stand is included. Keep the full serial number private; it is useful for your records but does not need to appear in a public listing.

Run the tests that apply to your model:
- Power-on, standby, and physical-button operation.
- Full-screen white, black, red, green, and blue images to reveal dead pixels, lines, dark spots, discoloration, clouding, or burn-in.
- Brightness uniformity and signs of backlight trouble.
- Built-in speakers and, where fitted, headphone or optical audio output.
- Every HDMI input, USB port, antenna or cable input, and any advertised audio connection.
- Wi-Fi, Ethernet, the smart-TV home screen, and streaming apps.
- Remote buttons, batteries, voice controls, and Bluetooth pairing where supported.
- Stand stability and the rear mounting points.
Do not claim that a feature works if the TV does not support it. A set that powers on but has no picture is not a normal working TV; describe it as defective or for parts unless the fault has been properly diagnosed.

2. Sign out, unlink, and factory-reset it
A factory reset is the manufacturer-provided process intended to remove local settings, apps, and account information, but it should not be treated as the entire privacy checklist. The FTC recommends removing administrative access and personal information from connected devices before transfer.
- Record any settings you want to reproduce on another TV.
- Sign out of Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, Disney+, and every other streaming app.
- Remove the TV from manufacturer account-management pages where that option exists.
- Disconnect voice assistants, casting relationships, smart-home integrations, and connected services.
- Remove USB drives, external storage, cable cards, streaming sticks, consoles, and other personal devices.
- Run the TV’s documented factory reset.
- Wait until the initial setup screen appears, then stop. Do not sign back in for the buyer.
For a Roku TV, Roku documents this path: Home → Settings → System → Advanced system settings → Factory reset → Factory reset everything. Roku says the process removes personal preferences, unlinks the Roku account, removes apps and account information, and returns the TV to initial setup. Some models have a physical reset button, but the button arrangement varies; follow the instructions for the exact series rather than holding buttons at random. See Roku’s reset guidance.
On older LG webOS sets, LG documents Settings → All Settings → General → Reset to Initial Settings. Newer LG models may place the option under Settings → All Settings → Support or elsewhere, so search LG Support using the exact model number. LG says a reset removes installed apps, personal settings, and saved data.

For Google TV, Android TV, Samsung, Vizio, and other brands, look under Settings, System, Device Preferences, Support, General, or Reset. Google also provides remote account sign-out and device-management guidance.
After resetting, check the associated online account from a phone or computer. If the TV still appears in the device list, remove it there. If a broken screen prevents you from verifying the reset, try the manufacturer’s documented physical-reset method or remote account controls. Do not guess at hidden service-menu commands. If you cannot verify that active accounts were removed, recycling is safer than selling the set as privacy-cleared.
3. Clean it and assemble the complete package
Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Usually, that means turning the TV off, letting it cool, and using a clean, soft microfiber cloth without spraying liquid directly onto the screen. Wipe the frame, remote, stand, and power cable separately. Avoid abrasive cleaners and excessive pressure.

Gather:
- Original stand and all screws.
- Remote and fresh or included batteries.
- Power cable and any original adapters.
- Manuals, mounting hardware, and the original box if available.
Do not promise accessories you cannot find. A TV without its stand may still be useful to a wall-mount buyer, but the listing must say that the stand or screws are missing. If it is wall-mounted, state whether the TV is being sold with a compatible mount or with no mounting hardware.

Resale value depends on more than size. Consider the brand and exact model, OLED/QLED/LED-LCD/plasma/projection/CRT technology, resolution, age, operating-system support, HDMI features, panel condition, included stand and remote, local demand, and pickup convenience.
Compare similar completed sales where available, not just optimistic asking prices. A television with slow or discontinued built-in apps may still be valuable as a display for a streaming box, game console, cable box, or computer. Describe it as a display with limited smart features rather than implying that current apps will work indefinitely.

Disclose defects prominently, including:
- Dead pixels, burn-in, temporary image retention, dark spots, vertical lines, clouding, discoloration, or cracks.
- Intermittent shutdowns, damaged HDMI ports, weak speakers, or Wi-Fi failure.
- Missing remote, stand, screws, cables, or manuals.
- Slow software or discontinued streaming support.
Use precise condition labels. “Working” means the relevant tested functions work. “Display only” means the picture and relevant inputs work but smart features may not. “For parts” means a material fault exists. “Untested” means you did not verify operation; it should not be used to disguise a known problem.
Take photographs of the powered-on screen, model label, inputs, remote, stand, rear mounting area, and every flaw. Photographing a neutral test screen can help demonstrate panel condition. Do not publish the full serial number.
5. Choose pickup, shipping, or recycling
Local pickup is usually best for large TVs
Local pickup avoids oversize shipping costs and reduces the risk of screen damage. Keep the TV reset and unplugged until the buyer arrives. Meet in a public place when practical. If pickup is from your home, have another adult present, keep personal account information private, and accept payment only through a method you understand and can verify.

Ship only with proper protection
Shipping is most practical for smaller sets or televisions with the original carton and molded foam inserts. A moving blanket alone is not adequate protection for a large screen. Use packaging designed for the TV’s size, document its condition before packing, and choose shipping coverage appropriate to its value. Oversize fees can eliminate the proceeds from the sale.
Recycle when selling no longer makes sense
Recycling or donation may be better when the panel is cracked, the TV repeatedly shuts down, repair costs exceed likely resale value, smart functions are unusable, shipping is uneconomical, or accounts cannot be removed safely. A very old or non-working set may be worth more as a free local giveaway or recycling item than as a paid listing.
Recycling rules, accepted screen types, fees, and retailer programs vary by location. Check your municipality, an electronics-recycling center, or the manufacturer’s take-back program. In the U.S., Best Buy’s service page currently lists paid TV haul-away options, including different prices depending on whether a replacement is delivered; eligibility and pricing should be verified locally at Best Buy’s official recycling page.
