Google is extending early access to more users, countries and devices while separately improving response times for tasks such as controlling lights, setting timers and managing lists. The basic Gemini for Home assistant is available on eligible hardware without a subscription, while Gemini Live and several advanced features require Google Home Premium.
Google says selected smart-home controls can respond up to 1.5 seconds faster. That is a maximum improvement for certain commands, not a guaranteed response time for every device, network or request.

What is actually speeding up?
“Faster rollout” describes two different changes:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Broader availability: Google is gradually inviting more homes, countries and devices into Gemini for Home early access.
- Faster performance: Google has optimized processing for some device controls, alarms, timers, lists and media requests.
Google’s June 23, 2026 release notes mention faster responses for selected light and plug commands, with improvements of up to 1.5 seconds. The same update included faster alarms, timers and lists, selected Spotify and YouTube playback improvements, better filtering of accidental activations, more reliable Continued Conversation and improved handling of background speech.

Latest Gemini for Home updates

|---|---|
| June 23, 2026 | Faster alarms, timers, lists and selected media requests; improved conversational reliability; and up to 1.5 seconds faster responses for some smart-home controls. |
| July 8, 2026 | Refreshed weather and general-knowledge cards on smart displays, more reliable sports answers, improved back-to-back conversations and early-access expansion in additional countries where Google Home Premium is available. |
| July 23, 2026 | Gemini Live expanded to first-generation Google Home Mini and first-generation Nest Hub devices for Google Home Premium subscribers. Google also listed a 15-minute conversational memory window across the Gemini for Home experience. |
As of the current rollout, Google still describes Gemini for Home as an early-access, staged release rather than a completed global launch.
Which Google Home devices support Gemini?
Google’s detailed compatibility guidance separates devices with complete Gemini for Home voice-assistant support from older or third-party products that receive most features but not Gemini Live.

| Google Nest Wifi point, Google Home Max, original Google Home and third-party speakers | Most Gemini for Home features may be available | Not supported according to Google’s compatibility guidance |
Google’s consumer overview refers broadly to Google Home and Nest speakers and displays released since 2016. The detailed compatibility page is more useful because it identifies where Gemini Live is unavailable. “Supports Gemini” does not necessarily mean “supports every Gemini feature.”
Firmware requirements
Google lists these minimum firmware versions for first-party devices:
- Speakers: Cast firmware version 3.76 or higher.
- Displays: Fuchsia firmware version 28 or higher.
Check a speaker’s firmware
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Home, then All devices.
- Touch and hold the device tile.
- Tap Settings, then Device information.
- Check the Cast firmware version.
Check a Nest display’s firmware
- Swipe up from the bottom of the display.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Technical Information.
- Check the Fuchsia version.
Having the required firmware does not guarantee immediate access. Google stages both firmware and account-level availability.

- Wait for a notification that says “Introducing Gemini for Home.”

What happens after you upgrade?
The upgrade applies to the home, not just one speaker. When a home is upgraded:
- Gemini for Home becomes available on eligible devices in that home.
- Compatible devices added later are expected to switch automatically.
- Everyone in the home can use the upgraded assistant.
- Google says the home cannot switch back to Google Assistant after the upgrade.
What is free and what requires Google Home Premium?
The basic assistant upgrade is not the same as the full Premium experience.

| Media discovery and playback | Advanced camera features, including AI event descriptions, daily Home Brief summaries and video-history search |
| Supported household-organization features | Additional video-history capabilities |
Google says core controls, timers and questions remain available without a subscription, but feature availability varies by country, language, device and plan. A Premium subscription also cannot add Gemini Live to devices that Google classifies as limited-support or incompatible.

What Gemini Live does
Gemini Live is the more conversational mode rather than the ordinary voice assistant used for a single command. Start it by saying:
“Hey Google, let’s chat.”
During an active session, you can ask follow-up questions and interrupt Gemini more naturally. Google’s July 23 release notes describe a 15-minute conversational memory window; that should not be interpreted as a promise that Gemini remembers everything for 15 minutes or retains information indefinitely.
Gemini Live requires Google Home Premium on the documented speaker and display experience. The July expansion is particularly relevant to owners of the original Google Home Mini and first-generation Nest Hub, because those devices can now use Live when the Premium and rollout requirements are met.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhy the invitation may not appear
A missing invitation does not automatically mean the device is unsupported. Check the following:
- Confirm that the device appears on Google’s compatibility list.
- Verify the Cast or Fuchsia firmware version.
- Update the Google Home app.
- Check the account’s country and language eligibility.
- Open Google Home → Profile picture or initial → Home settings → Early Access.
- Check the app inbox for a setup message.
Also confirm that the eligible account and device belong to the same Google Home. Because the rollout is staged, an eligible device may still wait for account-level access.
If a compatible device still uses Google Assistant
- Make sure the invitation was completed for the correct home.
- Check whether another household member manages the home or received the invitation.
- Allow time for staged rollout after updating the app and firmware.
- Do not factory-reset the device solely to force Gemini; Google’s documented process is invitation- and setup-based.
If Gemini responds slowly
- Check Wi-Fi and internet reliability.
- Confirm that the device is not updating.
- Unplug the device for one minute, reconnect it and allow it to restart.
- Compare a simple control command with a more demanding generative question.
Google says a normal smart-speaker update can take up to 10 minutes. Its 1.5-second improvement is a maximum reported gain for selected controls, not a universal latency guarantee.

If Gemini Live is missing
The most likely explanations are:
- The device is a limited-support model, such as an original Google Home, Google Home Max, Nest Wifi point or third-party speaker.
- The account does not have Google Home Premium.
- The feature has not reached the country, language or account.
- The device has not reached the required firmware.
- The user is trying to start Live on a device that supports core Gemini features but not Live.
Should you buy the new Google Home Speaker?
Existing owners should check the rollout before buying new hardware. A compatible Nest speaker or display may receive the core Gemini assistant without replacement, making it the economical choice for smart-home controls, timers and questions.
The Google Home Speaker (2026) is more compelling if you want Google’s newest speaker hardware, want the clearest path to the full Gemini experience, or value its advertised Premium trial. It is a poor fit if you only need basic controls, do not want a subscription, or live in a market where the relevant features are unavailable.
Should you subscribe to Google Home Premium?
Premium makes the most sense when you specifically want Gemini Live, natural-language automation creation, advanced camera intelligence or other plan-dependent Home features. It is harder to justify if you only want conversational answers, timers and ordinary smart-home controls, which Google says are part of the core experience.
Before subscribing, verify the exact device, country, language and camera compatibility. Premium does not provide full feature parity on every older or third-party speaker.
Sources and current limitations
Google’s compatibility and availability guidance, feature guide and setup instructions, Gemini for Home overview and release notes provide the current requirements. Google notes that features may take time to reach everyone even after the app is updated. Its release notes are generated with Gemini and may require corrections, so feature availability should be checked in the Google Home app and on Google’s support pages.
