Google details Nest Cam improvements in the Home app [Gallery]

Google’s Nest Cam improvements make the Home app better for browsing camera history, but support, AI tools, subscriptions and 24/7 recording vary by model and rollout.

Google is turning the Home app into a more capable control center for Nest cameras. The latest updates combine a redesigned camera-history interface with faster loading, smoother scrubbing, zoomed-in alert previews, improved support for some older cameras, and Gemini-powered descriptions and search. However, what you see depends on your camera model, Google Home app version, country, subscription tier, and whether the feature is still in Public Preview.

What the redesigned Nest Cam experience looks like

The “gallery” is not a conventional photo gallery. It is Google’s camera-history browsing experience: the place where you review recorded events, move along a timeline, and open individual clips.

In the updated interface, you can switch between a timeline and an event-list view. The video player can be expanded or collapsed while the event list remains available, so you can move from one recording to another without repeatedly closing and reopening the player. Google has also added smoother scrubbing and more precise playback controls.

That matters most when you are trying to find a specific moment—such as a person arriving, a package being delivered, an animal crossing the frame, or an activity around a construction site—rather than simply watching the live feed.

Google Nest Cam Indoor (Wired, 3rd Gen) - Security Camera - 2025 - Snow
  • Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Indoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
  • With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Kids are playing soccer in the living room”[3]; and get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
  • Google Nest Cam Indoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification,
and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a
green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
  • Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; and with a wider, taller field of view, you can see even more of a long hallway or large room[1]
  • Search your video history with help from Gemini[3]; try something like “What happened to the vase in the living room?” to see a summary and relevant clips (subscription required)

Gallery walkthrough

The exact appearance can differ by operating system, account, camera, and rollout status. A dated screenshot gallery should identify whether each image was captured on Android or iOS and whether Public Preview was enabled.

  • Camera screen: Open a Nest Cam in Google Home to reach live view and recorded activity.
  • Timeline view: Scrub through the camera’s history using a continuous time-based control.
  • Event-list view: Browse detected events as individual entries rather than searching the entire recording manually.
  • Persistent player: Keep the video open while scrolling through related events.
  • Alert preview: Notifications can show a closer crop of the relevant subject or activity.
  • AI details: Supported cameras and plans may show a description of what Google’s systems believe happened in a clip.
  • History search: Eligible users can ask natural-language questions to find relevant camera activity.

A timeline of Google’s camera-app changes

These improvements arrived in stages rather than as one single gallery redesign.

Date What Google announced
October 1, 2025 A rebuilt Google Home app with faster camera loading, a new event-history experience, better support for older Nest cameras, smarter notifications, AI-generated event descriptions, and camera-history search through Gemini. Google’s announcement describes the broader redesign.
May 5, 2026 A more modern camera interface with zoomed-in alert previews, smoother scrubbing, more precise controls, and an event list that remains accessible while the player is open. See Google’s Home update announcement.
2026, app version 4.20 Google’s release notes describe further rollout work, including broader Nest-device transfer, feedback controls for AI descriptions and familiar-face identification, and performance improvements for some original Nest cameras and Nest Hello Doorbells in Public Preview. Details are in the Google Home release notes.

Performance improvements: useful, but measured by Google

Google says the rebuilt app improved several performance metrics compared with its earlier software. Its reported figures include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Live views loading 30% faster.
  • A 40% reduction in playback failures.
  • Camera-history scrolling with a frame rate more than six times higher.
  • Camera tile previews loading instantly.
  • Nearly 80% fewer app crashes than several months earlier.
  • More than 70% faster app loading on some Android devices.

These are Google’s internal measurements, not independent tests. Actual results can vary with the phone, camera generation, Wi-Fi connection, internet service, account, app version, and region. The practical benefit should be most obvious when loading a live feed, scanning older event history, or recovering from failed playback—but Google’s percentages should not be treated as a guaranteed improvement for every installation.

What Gemini adds to Nest camera history

Google is also adding AI-assisted ways to understand and search camera activity. Depending on the camera, country, account, plan, and rollout, Google Home may provide:

  • Detailed event descriptions: Text that summarizes what the system detects in a recorded event.
  • Descriptive notifications: More context than a basic motion or person alert.
  • Camera-history search: Natural-language questions intended to locate relevant clips.
  • Daily summaries: A condensed overview of recorded activity.
  • Ask Home: A conversational way to locate camera activity or control compatible smart-home devices.

These features are not universal Nest Cam capabilities. Google distinguishes between its Standard and Advanced Google Home Premium plans, and availability can also vary by device and market. AI descriptions and familiar-face recognition are probabilistic: they can be wrong, incomplete, or misleading. Treat them as a way to find and review footage, not as definitive identification or security evidence.

Google Nest Cam Outdoor (Wired, 2nd Gen) - Security Camera - Snow - 2 Pack
  • Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Outdoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
  • Stay in the know with always-on power: Nest Cam Outdoor keeps you plugged into home, day and night, with no need to recharge or replace batteries
  • Google Nest Cam Outdoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification,
and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a
green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
  • With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Rabbits eating garden plants”[3]; get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
  • Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; a wider, taller field of view means almost nothing’s out of frame[1] – even in a long driveway or big yard

Which Nest cameras benefit?

The answer depends on both the camera generation and the specific feature.

Camera category What to expect
Newer Nest Cam models designed for Google Home Generally positioned around the Home app, with the newest interface and Google’s current camera features.
Battery-powered Nest Cams Can use the Home app and event history, but should not be treated as equivalent to wired cameras for continuous recording.
Wired Nest Cams Best candidates for features that depend on continuous power, including eligible 24/7 history.
Original Nest Cam and Nest Cam Outdoor Google says performance and transfer improvements are rolling out, with some legacy improvements identified as Public Preview.
Nest Hello Doorbell Google’s release notes include performance improvements in Public Preview for this legacy product.
Nest Cam IQ models and other legacy devices Support and feature parity may differ. Confirm the exact model and available controls in your Google Home account.

Google says previous-generation cameras and doorbells can work more smoothly in Google Home after changes to video encoding and processing. But “supported in Google Home” does not mean that every Nest-app feature has moved over. A camera may appear in Home while still lacking a familiar setting, history option, or sharing behavior.

Is the Nest app still required?

For newer products, Google increasingly treats Google Home as the primary—and sometimes only—app. For example, Google’s current Nest Cam Indoor wired, 3rd generation product page says the camera requires Google Home and is not compatible with the Nest app or home.nest.com.

Older cameras have a less uniform transition path. Some may transfer automatically, while others may require a Public Preview or may continue to expose different controls in the Nest app and Home app.

Do not delete the Nest app immediately after a camera appears in Google Home. First confirm that live view, recorded history, notifications, camera settings, audio, sharing, and downloading work as you need them. Keeping the older app installed during migration is especially sensible for households with several legacy cameras.

What Public Preview means

Public Preview features are early releases, not guarantees of final support. Google may change their names, design, behavior, or eligibility. Rollouts can also vary by account, device, operating system, and geography.

Google Nest Cam Outdoor or Indoor, Battery - Wireless Security Camera
  • Nest Cam has built-in intelligence and can tell the difference between a person, animal, and vehicle and send alerts directly through the Google Home app[1], no subscription required.Controller Type:Google Assistant.Connectivity protocol:Bluetooth;Wi-Fi.Power source type:Battery Powered.Operating Temperature : –4°F to 104°F (–20°C to 40°C).
  • Easily check in from anywhere 24/7 with 1080p HDR video[1] with night vision, and see what you missed with 3 hours of free event video history[2]; add a Nest Aware subscription (sold separately) for up to 60 days of video history[3]
  • If your Wi-Fi goes down or there’s a power outage, Nest Cam will store up to an hour of recorded events so you can see what you missed[4]. Nest Cam Outdoor comes with a wall plate that can be mounted on your brick wall.
  • Put Nest Cam anywhere, outside or in; it’s battery powered, so you don’t need to set it up near an outlet, and the magnetic mount makes installation effortless
  • For continuous power and 24/7 video recording with Nest Aware Plus, add a weatherproof power cable or indoor stand with power cable (both sold separately)

You may therefore see screenshots or controls that do not appear on your phone. Preview users can encounter missing settings, bugs, or behavior that differs from the stable experience. Google’s release notes specifically identify some legacy-camera improvements and automatic Nest-device transfer as Public Preview.

Subscription breakdown

Google now describes its newer Nest subscription as Google Home Premium. The following US prices and benefits reflect the Google Store listing checked on August 18, 2026; prices, taxes, promotions, billing arrangements, and availability can differ by market.

Option History and features US price signal
No subscription Supported cameras may provide limited event-video previews. The current third-generation wired indoor Nest Cam page lists six hours of event-video previews without a subscription. No Google Home Premium fee
Google Home Premium Standard 30 days of event-based video history, intelligent alerts, and Gemini for Home features where supported. It is the more practical tier for users who mainly want longer event history and smarter alerts. $10 per month or $100 per year in the US listing
Google Home Premium Advanced 60 days of event-based history, 10 days of 24/7 history for eligible wired cameras and doorbells, descriptive notifications, video-history search, detailed event descriptions, and daily summaries where supported. $20 per month or $200 per year in the US listing

The newer subscription structure is intended to cover supported Google Nest devices across a home rather than charging separately for each camera. Existing first-generation Nest Aware customers may have different legacy billing or feature arrangements, so the plan shown in your account is more reliable than assuming every household has the same entitlement.

Continuous recording has a strict limitation: 24/7 history is for eligible wired cameras and doorbells. Battery cameras cannot be presented as equivalent continuous-recording devices. Google’s compatibility guidance is available in its Google Home Premium help page.

How to move an older camera gradually

  1. Update Google Home through your phone’s app store.
  2. Open the relevant home and select the Nest Cam.
  3. Open its history or event view.
  4. Test both the event list and timeline, if both are available.
  5. Open several events and verify playback, scrubbing, audio, sharing, and downloading.
  6. Check notifications and camera settings rather than assuming they transferred correctly.
  7. If offered, review Public Preview or Gemini for Home settings before enabling them.
  8. Check the subscription panel before assuming that AI descriptions, search, extended history, or 24/7 recording are included.
  9. Keep the Nest app installed until the Home app provides every control you rely on.

Common problems and what they mean

The camera appears, but history is missing

Confirm that it is associated with the correct Google Home structure and Google account. Then check whether the required subscription is active and whether the camera’s history feature is supported in your region and app version.

An older camera still loads slowly

Look for the relevant Public Preview improvement, but do not assume that joining the preview guarantees a fix. Network conditions, legacy hardware, staged rollout status, and Google’s backend can all affect performance.

Google Nest Cam Outdoor or Indoor, Battery - 2nd Generation - 2 Count (Pack of 1)
  • Nest Cam has built-in intelligence and can tell the difference between a person, animal, and vehicle and send alerts directly through the Google Home app[1], no subscription required.Operating Temperature : –4°F to 104°F (–20°C to 40°C)
  • Easily check in from anywhere 24/7 with 1080p HDR video[1] with night vision, and see what you missed with 3 hours of free event video history[2]; add a Nest Aware subscription (sold separately) for up to 60 days of video history[3]

AI descriptions do not appear

Check the camera model, country, Google Home Premium tier, account eligibility, and rollout status. The absence of an AI description does not necessarily mean the camera is incorrectly installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

24/7 history is unavailable

Verify that the camera is wired and an eligible model. A battery-powered camera’s event history is not the same thing as continuous recording.

The Nest and Home apps show different options

That is possible during the transition. Use Google Home as the strategic destination for newer products, but retain the Nest app until your legacy-camera workflow has been verified.

Familiar-face recognition is wrong

Review the clip yourself and use Google’s available feedback controls where offered. A face label is an AI estimate, not proof of identity.

Should existing owners switch—or buy a new camera?

For most owners, switching gradually is more sensible than replacing working hardware solely to obtain the redesigned interface. An older supported camera may receive the improved Home-app experience, while buying a new camera does not automatically solve subscription, cloud-history, or feature-availability limitations.

A new Nest Cam makes more sense when your current model lacks a feature you actually need, has become unreliable, cannot use the relevant Home experience, or you specifically want newer Google Home-only hardware. The third-generation wired indoor model is a particularly clear example of Google’s direction: it requires Google Home rather than the Nest app.

Google Home Premium Standard is the more economical choice for ordinary event history and intelligent alerts. Advanced is easier to justify when you will use longer history, supported AI search and descriptions, daily summaries, or eligible 24/7 recording. If you only need occasional clips, paying for Advanced may add little value.

Readers who require local storage, no recurring cloud fee, broad third-party compatibility, or a non-cloud workflow should also recognize that these updates do not change Google’s underlying ecosystem trade-off.

Bottom line

Google’s Nest Cam update is more than a cosmetic gallery refresh. The Home app now offers a more practical way to browse events, keep the player open while navigating history, scrub through recordings, and respond to detailed alerts. Google also reports substantial performance gains, although those figures are internal measurements rather than independent benchmarks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The update makes Google Home a more credible central camera app, especially for newer cameras and households already using Google’s smart-home products. It is not yet a blanket replacement guarantee for every legacy Nest setup. Camera generation, wired versus battery power, Google Home Premium tier, Public Preview status, geography, and staged rollout all determine what you actually receive.

Test the Home app before abandoning the Nest app, and do not buy new hardware solely for the interface unless your existing camera lacks a feature you need.
