Construction Enquirer reported a Barbour ABI valuation of £280 million for the job, but said the official contract sum was not disclosed. The valuation should not be read as a confirmed signed price.
What put TSL at the top?
Construction Enquirer reported on 8 October 2026 that TSL led its September contracts league after replacing Sir Robert McAlpine on the Agratas battery-cell plant in Somerset. The outlet described TSL as a specialist shed and data-centre builder and attributed the project’s £280 million valuation to Barbour ABI. The report did not disclose the official contract sum. The ranking is a monthly league table of reported work secured; it does not establish that TSL is the UK’s largest contractor, nor that £280 million represents all remaining project costs. The evidence for the reported change and valuation is the contemporaneous trade-press account. Agratas’s earlier project update identifies McAlpine’s prior role but predates the reported TSL appointment.

How did the September rankings compare?
Construction Enquirer’s September table placed Winvic second, following warehouse awards for Tritax Big Box at Symmetry Park and SEGRO’s Northampton Gateway. Willmott Dixon ranked third, with £183 million of September work across a group of projects. It also moved to the top of the rolling 12-month league, ahead of Kier. These figures refer to different measures: TSL’s reported Agratas valuation is for one job, while Willmott Dixon’s £183 million is a total for multiple September projects. The league report does not reproduce the complete ranking tables in its article text, so it does not support a full contractor-by-contractor comparison here.
Monthly activity across the top 50
Construction Enquirer reported that the top 50 contractors secured £3.14 billion across 110 projects in September, compared with £3.12 billion across 126 projects in August. Its account said larger awards lifted September’s total despite the smaller project count. These are figures reported by the publication, rather than a separately verified measure of the whole UK construction market. Construction Enquirer’s ranking report

What is the Agratas battery plant?
Agratas is developing a lithium-ion battery-cell manufacturing facility at the Gravity Enterprise Zone near Bridgwater, Somerset. The company says the facility is intended to supply automotive and energy-storage applications. Somerset Council describes production as phased and says the site is expected to become fully operational in the early 2030s; that is a planned timeline, not a guarantee. Agratas’s 10 February 2026 update said construction began in 2024 and named Sir Robert McAlpine as construction delivery partner for the Building One steel-frame milestone. The company gave the completed frame’s dimensions as 525 metres long, 167 metres wide and 34 metres high. Those measurements describe the Building One frame, not the entire site. - Reported in October 2026: Construction Enquirer said TSL replaced Sir Robert McAlpine on the Agratas project and led the September league. It attributed the £280 million valuation to Barbour ABI. Construction Enquirer’s report
- Not disclosed in the reviewed coverage: the official TSL contract sum. The £280 million figure is a reported valuation, not a confirmed contract price.
- Documented earlier by Agratas: McAlpine’s role in delivering the Building One steel-frame milestone, as described in the company’s February 2026 update. That update does not confirm the later TSL appointment. Agratas project update
- Not established by the reports: why the contractor changed or whether the reported valuation covers all remaining project costs.
Agratas’s February update included a statement from Craig Allen, then Sector Managing Director, Industrial, at Sir Robert McAlpine: “We are proud to be playing a central role in delivering a facility that will support the UK’s clean-energy ambitions, create thousands of skilled jobs, and help position the country at the forefront of next-generation battery manufacturing.” It was a comment on the project at that earlier stage, not on TSL’s reported appointment.
