A construction-related truck caught fire on the SR 46 bridge over the Whitewater River near Barber Road in West Harrison, Indiana, at about 7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2026. No injuries were reported. Responding agencies said the fire posed no threat to the public, river, or wildlife; the bridge’s owner, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), is checking whether the structure was damaged before its planned November reopening.
What happened on the SR 46 bridge?
Local reports describe the vehicle as a box truck, with another report identifying it as a paint supply truck. Its precise cargo and owner were not confirmed, so it is best described as a construction-related truck associated with the project. New Trenton Volunteer Fire Department Chief Don Maucher told FOX19 that flames rose as high as 10 feet above the truck.
Four fire departments responded: New Trenton, Harrison, Crosby Township, and Whitewater Township. Dearborn County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), and Greater Cincinnati Haz-Mat also assisted. No injuries were reported.
Did chemicals reach the Whitewater River?
EMA was called because fuel might have reached the river. Haz-mat responders monitored the water south of the bridge. EMA, IDEM, and haz-mat officials reported no threat to the public, the river, or wildlife, and said chemicals burned in the fire rather than spilling into the river. These are the agencies’ reported findings; the available reports do not describe a separate water-testing result.

Was the bridge open to traffic?
No. The bridge was already closed to traffic for repairs. During the fire response, State Road 46 was also closed between Whites Hill Road and the bridge. The official detour for the bridge closure is US 52 to I-74 to SR 1.
Could the fire delay the bridge reopening?
The bridge has been closed since April 2024 for repairs and was targeted to reopen in November 2026. INDOT engineers are inspecting the structure to determine whether the fire caused damage and whether the planned opening needs to be delayed. The reports available on October 7, 2026, did not provide an inspection finding or a revised opening date, so the November target should not be treated as confirmed after the fire.

INDOT’s mid-2025 project update said crews had removed the aged deck from two of the bridge’s five truss spans. Remaining work included steel rehabilitation, sandblasting, painting, installation of a new deck surface, and joint replacement. The inspection will establish whether fire-related repairs must be added to that work.

The cause was under investigation in the local reports published October 6, 2026. No official cause, confirmed truck owner, or confirmed contractor was identified in those reports.
