Top-Quality PVC Polyester Fabric: What You Need to Know

PVC-coated polyester fabric has no single "top-quality" grade. Here is how to compare construction, weight, width and tested properties to match a fabric to your job.

PVC-coated polyester fabric is a woven polyester textile with a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating, used for covers, tarps, curtains and other protective applications. There is no single recognized “top-quality” grade. A fabric is good for a job when its construction, coating, weight, finish and tested properties match the conditions it will face, and the product’s own technical sheet is the only reliable place to confirm them.

What PVC-coated polyester fabric is

The fabric has two parts: a polyester base cloth that supplies strength and dimensional stability, and a PVC layer that adds a barrier against water and some other elements. Suppliers do not use the coating process in the same way. Germes describes its Cover-PVC as a tear-resistant polyester weave with a closed PVC coating. ComPlast lists both coated and laminated polyester fabrics, and the two construction methods are not interchangeable. If a specification says “coated” in one place and “laminated” in another, check which construction the supplier actually sells before comparing prices or performance.

“Top-quality” is a marketing word rather than a standard. Nothing in the supplier material reviewed for this article establishes a universal grade with that name, or a universal durability period. Two products that both carry the PVC-coated polyester label can differ in weight, coating thickness, finish and test results, and they can be built for very different jobs.

Where it is used

Suppliers list a consistent set of uses: truck and lumber tarps, container and storage covers, marine and boat covers, winter swimming pool covers, industrial curtains and other protective coverings. ComPlast also lists pond and spa covers, gym mats and sports bags for its coated and laminated range. These are the applications the manufacturers report, not independent certifications that a given grade will perform in each of them.

The same base material can serve very different roles. Germes states that its Cover-PVC is a protective cover fabric and is not meant as upholstery or awning fabric. Saint Clair Textiles describes its Coverlac product as designed to cover pools in the winter season. Buying a cover fabric for a seating or awning project on the strength of the general category is the most common way to end up with the wrong grade.

How to judge a grade

Work through the specification in this order. Each item changes what the fabric can do, and most supplier pages list them in different places.

  1. Confirm the construction. Ask whether the fabric is coated or laminated, and whether the PVC is a closed coating. Coating and lamination give different surface behavior and different seam and edge performance.
  2. Record the weight. Weight is usually given in grams per square metre (g/m²) for European and metric listings, and in ounces per square yard for North American coated fabrics, where ComPlast lists 10, 14, 18.5, 22 and 40 oz. Heavier does not automatically mean better. A heavier fabric is stiffer, harder to fold and fabricate, and more expensive per metre, and it may be more than the job needs.
  3. Check the width. Roll width determines how many seams you will need. Listed widths in the material reviewed range from 150 cm to 3.00 m, so the choice affects both cutting waste and the number of joins.
  4. Look for measured water resistance. Water-resistance figures should name the test method. For example, Germes gives 4,000 mm water column measured to ISO 811, which is a hydrostatic head test. A higher figure means the fabric resists a higher column of water before leaking under that test. It does not guarantee performance under rain driven by wind, on a seam, or on a fabric that has been stretched.
  5. Check abrasion and tear data. Germes lists 60,000 Martindale abrasion cycles for its Cover-PVC. Any abrasion figure only applies to the test conditions behind it. Covers that rub against edges, frames or gravel need that check more than a covering that stays still.
  6. Look at lightfastness for outdoor exposure. Germes gives a lightfastness rating of 7–8 on a scale of 8 for the same product. This tells you about colour fading under the test conditions stated, not about the fabric’s service life in a particular climate.
  7. Confirm the finish and any treatment. Finishes and treatments are often options rather than standard features. Saint Clair Textiles says its Coverlac carries a Cleangard topcoat lacquer that eases cleaning and maintenance. A different product from the same maker may not have it.
  8. Verify any regulated requirement separately. If the job needs a fire rating or another compliance standard, get the exact standard and the documentation for that specific product. A generic phrase such as “fire rated” on a listing does not prove compliance.

Named specifications, side by side

The figures below come from individual supplier product pages. They show what published specifications look like. They are not benchmarks for the category, and none of the product pages reviewed carried a publication date.

Product (supplier) Stated weight Stated width Other stated figures Described use
Cover-PVC (Germes) 280 g/m² 150 cm 4,000 mm water column (ISO 811); 60,000 Martindale abrasion cycles; lightfastness 7–8 out of 8 Protective cover fabric; not upholstery or awning fabric
Coverlac (Saint Clair Textiles) 700 g/m² 3.00 m Cleangard topcoat lacquer; other test values not stated in the reviewed listing Winter swimming pool covers
Product 6894 (Giovanardi) 650 g/m² 250 cm Thickness 0.52 mm; 100% polyester composition Industrial applications
Coated range (ComPlast) 10, 14, 18.5, 22 and 40 oz Not stated Listed weights only; no performance ranking given Truck and lumber tarps, storage covers, marine covers, pond and spa covers, gym mats, sports bags
Laminated range (ComPlast) 10, 13.5 and 18.5 oz Not stated Listed weights only; no performance ranking given Same listed range as the coated products

Two things stand out. The Germes and Coverlac weights are close, yet they are built for different jobs, so weight alone does not identify a suitable product. The ComPlast figures are weight options, not test results, so they tell you what sizes exist, not how well each one performs.

Xtreme Sight Line ~ 1680 Denier PVC Backed Ballistic Nylon ~ Industrial Grade PVC Coating Application ~ Abrasion Resistant ~ Water Proof ~ 59" Width by 36" ~ 1 Yard ~ Black
  • Black - 1680 Denier Ballistic PVC Backed fabric cut to 1 linear yard (36 inches) from a 60" wide roll
  • A robust 1680 denier ballistic fabric base constructed using a 2x2 basket weave then backed with layer of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that is resistant to UV, acids, alkalis, oils and many corrosive inorganic chemicals
  • While being impermeable to most liquids, this backing also acts as a light flame retardant and is self extinguishing
  • The ballistic PVC pairing makes for a high impact strength fabric that withstands abrasion yet is flexible and easy to cut and sew

Matching the fabric to the job

  • Outdoor covers exposed to rain: Check the water-resistance test and method, and ask how seams and hems are finished, since a seam can be the weak point even when the fabric itself is rated well.
  • Long-term sun exposure: Ask for the lightfastness rating and the conditions it was measured under. A rating from one test method does not translate directly to another climate.
  • Fabric that flexes, rolls or rubs: Look at abrasion, tear and, where relevant, cold-flex or low-temperature data. Winter covers and tarps that are folded and unfolded often need this information more than a single water rating.
  • Sewing or welding: Confirm the supplier’s recommended joining method for that specific construction before cutting material. The supplier material reviewed does not give a general fabrication procedure, so the product’s own instructions are the authority.
  • Regulated or safety-critical work: Treat the product’s documentation as the requirement, not the category name.

Ordering samples and confirming the specification

  1. Request the current technical data sheet for the exact product and note its name, width and weight.
  2. Ask for a sample if colour or finish matters. Germes offers samples and notes that colours can look different on screen than on the fabric, so judge colour from a physical swatch.
  3. Compare the sample against your conditions: check its flexibility, handling and weight in your own use case.
  4. Confirm the treatments, such as a topcoat or lacquer, and whether they are standard or optional for the product you are ordering.
  5. Only then order the roll length, making sure the width covers your cut with the least number of joins.

Care and limits of the evidence

Cleaning and maintenance depend on the finish and the product. The Cleangard lacquer on Coverlac is described by its maker as easing cleaning, but that claim applies to that product and not to PVC-coated polyester in general. Follow the care instructions for your fabric.

The material reviewed for this article does not establish how PVC-coated polyester compares on recyclability, lifecycle or environmental impact, and no broad environmental claim is made here. The published figures come from manufacturers and are reported as they appear on their product pages, which are undated. Check any figure against the current sheet before relying on it for a project.

The most useful next step is to write down the job’s conditions, such as exposure, load, abrasion, temperature, required width and any compliance rule, and then match those conditions to the product’s stated data rather than to the name on the label.
