If a towel rack pulled drywall out with it, repair the wall before reinstalling the bracket. Remove loose material, patch small damage and let it dry fully; then mount the rack into a stud where possible, or use an anchor made for sound drywall. An anchor installed in a torn, enlarged hole will not restore the wall’s grip.
First, check what came out of the wall
Carefully remove the bar and any loose bracket hardware. Look at the mounting point and identify the wall surface. If drywall came away with the fastener, check how large the damaged area is and whether the drywall around it is firm. A loose fastener in otherwise sound wallboard is different from an anchor surrounded by torn or crumbling board.
The repair steps below apply to drywall. If the rack pulled from tile, do not use drywall patching or drilling steps without confirming a tile-appropriate repair and mounting method; tile can crack. Consult the fixture instructions or a qualified professional if the surface, damage, or backing is uncertain.
Repair the drywall before remounting
Small, localized damage
- Remove loose drywall and debris without enlarging the damaged area unnecessarily.
- Apply spackling compound according to its label and allow it to dry as directed.
- Sand the repair smooth and touch up the paint.
Lowe’s recommends repairing drywall damaged by a dislodged towel fixture before reinstalling it. If the torn area is extensive, use an appropriate larger drywall repair rather than relying on filler or an anchor in damaged board (Lowe’s towel-ring repair guidance; Lowe’s drywall repair guidance).

Choose a sound mounting point and fastening method
Before drilling, measure the rack’s bracket spacing and mark the holes with a level. Follow the fixture’s instructions for the model-specific spacing and hardware. One Lowe’s installation manual, for example, specifies brackets 18 or 24 inches on center depending on the bar model; those measurements are not universal (installation manual).

The Home Depot advises locating studs and using anchors when a stud is not available at the desired position (towel-bar installation guide). Anchor choice depends on the wall condition, thickness, fixture bracket, and the product directions. Lowe’s describes toggle bolts for its towel-ring bracket; a self-drilling anchor is another possible option when its requirements match the installation.

Understand anchor product claims
For example, The Home Depot lists E-Z Ancor Twist-N-Lock model 25310 for towel racks and specifies use in 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch drywall. Its listing gives a “75 lb. working load in 1/2 in. drywall” and warns against overtightening (product listing). That is a product specification, not a guarantee for a damaged wall or a site-specific rating for any towel rack. Check that an anchor fits your wall and bracket, and follow its instructions.

- With the repair dry and the mounting points marked, install the chosen fasteners according to the rack and anchor instructions.
- Attach the mounting plates and rack as the fixture maker directs.
- Check gently for movement before hanging towels. Do not use a towel bar as a grab bar.
The Home Depot gives about 48 inches as a standard towel-bar mounting height, but household needs, accessibility, and the location can call for a different height. Height is a placement choice, not a requirement for repairing the wall.
