For a garden with an old-fashioned, abundant feel, combine traditional flowers with roses and useful plants in loose, layered beds. Hollyhocks and delphiniums add height; lavender brings fragrance and silver-gray foliage; roses anchor the planting. The effect comes from a varied mix suited to your site—not from a strict historical plant list.

The guidance below draws on Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) material and English garden examples, so adapt plant choices and growing times to your local climate, soil and conditions.

What makes a garden feel timeless?

Think informal rather than rigidly matched. The RHS describes traditional English cottage gardens as mixing flowers with fruit and vegetables. At Farringford Estate, a restored 19th-century walled garden drew on family journals and historic watercolors to bring together old-fashioned roses, salvias, hollyhocks, delphiniums and sweet peas with useful crops. That is a source of inspiration, not a prescription for recreating a particular period.

Build a border with different heights and flower shapes: let upright spires rise among rounded clumps, and use smaller flowers as a softer haze beside larger blooms. Foxgloves, verbascums, hollyhocks and delphiniums can provide vertical accents; asters, phlox and geraniums offer contrasting rounded forms. The RHS community newsletter also suggests plants such as lupins, rosemary, pinks, primroses and columbines. Choose among them according to what grows well where you live, rather than limiting the palette in the name of authenticity.

Choose plants for the conditions you have

Before buying, assess sun, wind exposure, drainage and summer moisture. Then decide how much ongoing care you are willing to give: tall stems may need support, lavender needs pruning to stay tidy, and some plants face specific disease risks. For a quicker sense of structure, buy established young plants; if you have more patience, raising plants from seed can help create a generous, informal effect.

Hollyhocks for height and easy seed-grown color

Hollyhocks (Alcea) are cottage-garden stalwarts, with tall stems and large, crinkle-petalled flowers in shades including white, pink, cream, apricot and dusky red. The RHS says they are easy to grow from seed and may self-seed. They tolerate a range of soils but need full sun. In exposed or windy spots, their height can make staking necessary.

Plan for the possibility of hollyhock rust, especially on older plants. It can cause spotted leaves and poor growth, so these flowers are not a guaranteed disease-free choice. See the RHS guide to hollyhocks for further growing guidance.

Delphiniums for early-summer spires

Perennial delphiniums bring commanding flower spikes, often in blue, mauve, lavender or purple. Give them a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil; shade and strong wind are poor fits, and tall spikes may need support. Annual larkspur (Consolida) is a smaller, less permanent alternative that can flower through summer.

Lavender for fragrance and pollinator interest

Lavender adds fragrant foliage, silver-gray color and summer flowers; the RHS describes it as drought tolerant and popular with bees and butterflies. It suits a sunny place with free-draining soil, not shade, wet ground or heavy soil. Hardy English lavender types generally live longer than some less-hardy French lavenders. Annual pruning helps prevent plants from becoming woody and untidy; the exact pruning approach depends on the type.

Roses for a lasting anchor

Old-fashioned roses fit naturally into this palette and can anchor a border for years. Choose by flower form, scent, color, eventual size and planting position—not by the “old-fashioned” label alone. Roses generally prefer sun and rich, moist but well-drained soil, though some tolerate light shade.

Put the planting together

  1. Map the site. Note sunny and shaded areas, windy corners, soil drainage and places that dry out in summer.
  2. Set the structure. Place tall plants such as hollyhocks or delphiniums where their height will suit the border and where shelter or staking is practical.
  3. Add contrasting forms. Mix upright flower spikes with rounded clumps and smaller blooms, rather than planting one kind in a single block.
  4. Choose anchors and accents. Use a suitable rose as a lasting feature, then add lavender or other flowers only where the site matches their needs.
  5. Decide how to establish plants. Sow seed for a slower, potentially self-seeding display, or buy young plants when you want established structure sooner. Follow locally appropriate sowing times and plant care.

These are UK-oriented growing recommendations from the RHS. Climate, hardiness, sowing dates and maintenance needs differ by location; local growing guidance can help refine the palette.

Plan for maintenance, not just the first summer

  • Support tall stems where needed: wind can topple delphinium spikes and hollyhock stems.
  • Keep lavender from becoming woody: prune it annually, following advice for the type you grow.
  • Expect possible hollyhock rust: older plants are particularly prone to it.
  • Reassess roses as they grow: their care and mature size depend on the type and site.

A timeless border is not maintenance-free. Choosing plants that fit the conditions—and making room for their mature height and care—helps the planting look intentional as it fills out.
