Fungineering’s DIY cooking robot can automate the preparation of a dhal-like, one-pot meal from raw ingredients. It dispenses spices and larger ingredients at programmed times, then uses a Raspberry Pi-controlled robot arm to stir, scrape, and push the food.
It is not a general-purpose robot chef. The demonstration still needed a small amount of human assistance, and the system was designed around one constrained cooking process rather than arbitrary recipes.

How the cooking sequence works
- Load the ingredients. Spices and larger ingredients are portioned into dedicated containers.
- Set up the cooking area. The pot is placed on a hot plate, with the ingredient containers positioned around it.
- Start the programmed sequence. The system releases ingredients at predetermined times.
- Dispense spices. A rotating spice dispenser uses servo-operated openings to release measured portions.
- Add larger ingredients. Stainless-steel containers are flipped by larger servo motors so ingredients such as rice or other substantial components fall into the pot.
- Stir and manipulate the food. A small robot arm stirs, scrapes, and pushes the contents as the dish cooks.
- Finish the dhal. The programmed sequence produces the demonstrated one-pot dish.
The linked creator video is titled “Automatic home cooking robot DIY – PART 1”. The available documentation does not establish the exact cooking time, temperature, serving size, ingredient quantities, or success rate.
The hardware behind it
Ingredient dispensers
The robot separates dispensing into two mechanical problems. Spices use a rotating dispenser with servo-controlled openings. Larger ingredients sit in stainless-steel containers that can be tipped into the pot.
This is simpler than asking a dexterous robot hand to identify, measure, grasp, and pour every ingredient. Dedicated containers can be built around a known recipe and triggered at known points in the cooking process.
However, the maker encountered a significant practical problem: spices sometimes stuck inside their containers. Powders can compact, cling to surfaces, or fail to flow consistently. A dispenser may therefore open at the correct time without delivering the expected amount.
The published coverage does not say whether the system can detect a partial dispense, a jam, or an empty container. It also does not establish the containers’ maximum capacity, food-contact rating, heat isolation, or method for keeping ingredients fresh before cooking.

The stirring arm
A small robot arm handles the repetitive manipulation that would otherwise require a person to stand at the stove. It can stir the contents and, when necessary, scrape or shove food around the pot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe arm is controlled by a Raspberry Pi. Instead of requiring sophisticated motion planning, the maker can physically move the arm through a desired path once. The robot then repeats that learned movement. This is commonly described as demonstration-based or kinesthetic programming.
That approach is practical for a fixed pot and recipe. It is much less flexible if the pot moves, the food volume changes, the mixture becomes thicker, or the cooking tool encounters an obstruction. The source identifies the controller as a Raspberry Pi but does not specify the board model, robot-arm model, programming language, servo manufacturer, or robotics framework.
Heat and timing
The documented system places a conventional pot on a hot plate and coordinates ingredient additions and stirring by schedule. The available coverage does not establish that it uses temperature feedback, liquid-level sensing, food-temperature measurement, boil-over detection, smoke detection, automatic heat adjustment, or a verified emergency shutdown.
It is therefore more accurate to describe the design as timed mechanical automation than as an AI cooking system. Nothing in the available documentation demonstrates independent recipe selection, visual food inspection, or adaptive cooking decisions.
Why a narrow recipe makes the robot possible
A general kitchen robot would need to handle different ingredients, textures, utensils, cooking methods, temperatures, pot shapes, and failure conditions. Fungineering’s machine avoids much of that complexity by designing the automation around a constrained workflow.

- One vessel: the food remains in a single pot.
- One cooking style: the dish tolerates sequential additions and repeated stirring.
- Fixed timing: ingredients arrive according to a programmed schedule.
- Dedicated mechanisms: containers dump ingredients instead of a humanoid arm handling everything.
- Repeatable motion: the arm follows a taught stirring path.
This pattern is common in useful automation: the machine becomes more reliable when the environment and task are designed to be predictable. The meal is, in effect, engineered to suit the robot.
How autonomous is it?
The robot automates meaningful physical actions, but it should not be described as a household appliance that operates independently from preparation through cleanup. The Hackster report notes that a small amount of human assistance was still required.
| Capability | Documented status |
|---|---|
| Add ingredients at programmed times | Demonstrated |
| Stir automatically | Demonstrated |
| Scrape or push food | Demonstrated |
| Cook a specified one-pot dish | Demonstrated with dhal |
| Choose recipes independently | Not established |
| Recover from dispensing errors | Not established |
| Cook arbitrary meals | No evidence |
| Plate and serve food | No evidence |
| Clean the equipment | No evidence |
| Run safely without supervision | Not established |
A person still needs to prepare and portion ingredients, load the dispensers, position the pot and hardware, start the system, respond to problems, and clean the equipment. The robot cooks the dish; it does not replace the complete kitchen workflow.

Dispensing problems
- Spices stick to the inside of a container.
- Powder bridges over an opening or compacts into a lump.
- A container empties only partially.
- A servo lacks sufficient torque to flip a loaded bin.
- Ingredients fall in the wrong place and cause splashing.
- An ingredient is released too early or too late.
Stirring problems
- The arm cannot reach the full cooking area.
- Thick food overloads the actuator.
- The tool scrapes the pot incorrectly or damages its surface.
- Food burns at the bottom or edges despite the programmed motion.
- The arm collides with the pot or surrounding dispensers.
- A taught path becomes unsafe if the pot is repositioned.
Heat, hygiene, and safety problems
A hot plate, moving mechanisms, liquid food, steam, and electronics create hazards that deserve more attention than a typical hobby robot. Possible risks include burns, hot splashes, pinch points, electrical exposure, boil-over, contamination, and damage from steam or grease.
The available documentation does not establish that the machine is certified, fail-safe, food-safe, or suitable for unattended operation. It also does not verify whether food-contact components are designed for repeated washing or whether electronics are adequately isolated from heat and moisture. Raw meat, if used in a particular recipe, would introduce additional temperature and cross-contamination concerns; the successful demonstration described in the source was dhal.

The concept is understandable, but the Hackster article does not provide enough information to treat the project as a complete construction plan. It does not establish a full bill of materials, exact dimensions, detailed code repository, torque calculations, safety design, or verified food-contact materials.

A prototype builder would likely need a Raspberry Pi, servo motors, a suitable multi-channel servo-control system, a small robot arm, mechanical brackets, containers, wiring, power supplies, switches, and potentially sensors. Suitable components are available from vendors such as Raspberry Pi, Pololu, Adafruit, Hiwonder, and RobotShop.
Those products are building blocks, not a ready-made cooking solution. Servo torque must be matched to the loaded container and lever arm. Food-contact parts must be appropriate for the ingredients and cleanable. A prototype should also include a controlled shutdown strategy and should not be assumed safe to leave operating unattended.
Would it replace cooking for you?
For most households, no. A programmable multicooker is a better fit for unattended convenience because it integrates cooking controls and is designed for kitchen use. An automatic stirring device is simpler if stirring is the main inconvenience. Meal kits and prepared meals address shopping, chopping, and planning more directly.
This robot makes sense primarily as a robotics experiment. Its setup, ingredient loading, supervision, and cleanup may consume much of the time saved for a single meal. Its value is the demonstration of a design strategy: automate a narrow, repeatable process instead of attempting to reproduce every action a human cook can perform.
Verdict
Fungineering’s machine genuinely demonstrates automated cooking of a dhal-like one-pot meal from raw ingredients. It dispenses ingredients, repeats taught stirring motions, and reduces the need for hands-on cooking.

But “an entire meal” should not be confused with “any meal,” and automation should not be confused with full autonomy. This is a clever, specialized DIY prototype—not a general-purpose robot chef, a commercial appliance, or evidence that a kitchen can yet run safely without human preparation and oversight.
