The ESP32 handles Wi-Fi, Tuya communication and application logic, while a transistor-driven infrared LED reproduces the DVD player’s remote-control signals. Tuya Link SDK delivers commands; it does not automatically generate every DVD brand’s infrared waveform.
The reliable design is an ESP32-based Tuya-to-IR bridge: a Tuya app or cloud command reaches the ESP32, firmware maps it to an operation such as PLAY or STOP, and the IR hardware transmits the matching learned or model-specific code.

What this project actually builds
This project applies to a standalone DVD player or DVD recorder controlled by an infrared remote—not a computer’s internal DVD drive. DVD players commonly use modulated infrared signals, often in the 38-kHz class, but the protocol, device address, command bytes, repeats and timings vary between manufacturers and models.

What Tuya Link SDK does—and does not do
TuyaOS Link SDK is a C-based connectivity layer that provides capabilities including device activation, bidirectional cloud communication and OTA-related functions. Tuya describes it as platform- and operating-system-independent for devices with a TCP/IP stack (TuyaOS Link SDK overview).
That does not mean that installing the SDK makes an ESP32 a universal DVD remote. Your firmware still needs to:
- Receive a Tuya data point or device command.
- Map that command to a logical DVD function.
- Generate the correct carrier-modulated mark-and-space waveform.
- Drive the IR LED at an appropriate current.
- Handle repeats, timing, storage and error reporting.
Tuya’s documented IR SDK is a separate capability aimed at supported Tuya platforms and modules. Its cited driver structure lists platforms such as BK7231 and RTL87xx, not an ESP32-specific implementation (Tuya IR SDK documentation). Therefore, on an ESP32, plan to implement the IR transmitter and optional learning receiver with ESP32 hardware and firmware unless your selected Tuya solution explicitly supplies compatible IR support.
Choose an ESP32 and Tuya development route
TuyaOpen: the most direct starting point for a new project
TuyaOpen explicitly lists ESP32, ESP32-C3 and ESP32-S3 among its supported targets (TuyaOpen repository). Its Arduino integration also lists ESP32 support and recommends Arduino IDE 2 for setup (Arduino TuyaOpen integration).
This is a sensible first route for a prototype if the available examples and services fit your project. The dedicated TuyaOpen ESP32 repository is a sub-repository and is not intended to be compiled independently; use it through the main TuyaOpen project.
Generic TuyaOS or IoT Core Link SDK
Use the generic route when you already have an ESP-IDF firmware architecture or need tighter control. It requires adapting platform interfaces for networking, TLS, time, tasks, synchronization, persistent storage, random-number generation and cryptographic dependencies. Tuya’s migration guidance explains these adaptation requirements (Link SDK migration instructions).

Tuya module plus ESP32
A Tuya Wi-Fi module can manage Tuya connectivity while an ESP32 manages the DVD infrared subsystem. This can be useful when a product must follow a particular Tuya integration method, but it adds a hardware link, serial protocol and authorization considerations. Tuya documents several integration methods, including SoC, AT-module/MCU, AT-module and OpenCPU approaches (Tuya integration methods).
Do not assume that a device connected to Tuya Cloud will automatically appear in Smart Life. Consumer-app compatibility depends on the product category, account configuration, authorization and integration method. A Tuya community issue illustrates this distinction (Tuya IoT Core SDK discussion).
Hardware required
- ESP32 development board supported by your selected framework.
- 940-nm IR LED, or another emitter suited to the DVD player’s receiver.
- NPN transistor or logic-level MOSFET.
- Base or gate resistor and an LED current-limiting resistor.
- Suitable 3.3-V or 5-V supply, with a common ground.
- Optional status LED and learning button.
- Optional demodulating IR receiver module for learning the original remote.
Use a transistor driver
Do not connect a high-power IR LED directly to an ESP32 GPIO and expect normal remote range. The GPIO should control a transistor or MOSFET:
ESP32 GPIO -- base/gate resistor --> transistor
5 V ------ current resistor --> IR LED --> transistor
ESP32 GND ------------------------------- common ground
Calculate the resistor and peak current from the LED’s forward voltage, supply voltage, transistor or MOSFET characteristics, duty cycle and the LED manufacturer’s continuous and pulse-current limits. Exact values depend on the selected parts; a generic circuit value is not automatically safe.
The transmitter needs a clear path to the DVD player’s IR receiver. Enclosure material, LED alignment, supply quality and optical output all affect range. Tuya gives a recommended IR control distance of within 16 metres, but that is a vendor guideline—not a guaranteed range for a DIY ESP32 transmitter (Tuya IR troubleshooting).

Optional IR receiver
A demodulating receiver simplifies learning by producing a digital pulse stream from the original remote. Connect its output to an ESP32 input capable of accurate edge timing. Tuya’s IR documentation treats transmission and reception as separate hardware functions and discusses IR learning and virtual remote features (Tuya IR capability documentation).
Obtain the DVD commands
Use a known code profile
For a specific DVD model, store a code profile containing fields such as:
brand
model
protocol
address or device ID
function
carrier frequency
repeat behaviour
raw timing or decoded frame
There is no universal “DVD” code. Even two models from one manufacturer may differ. Tuya states that its IR capability includes DVD appliances, but this does not guarantee that its library contains your exact model.

- Choose a logical function such as

- Capture the pulse durations and, where possible, the carrier frequency.
- Validate the signal length and repeat structure.
- Store the capture in nonvolatile memory.
- Replay it through the IR LED and test the DVD player.
- Repeat for the required transport, navigation and numeric keys.
A demodulated receiver may not preserve every detail of an unusual remote protocol. Toggle bits, special repeat frames, nonstandard carriers and long timing sequences may require protocol-specific handling. A successful capture does not guarantee successful replay.
Design the Tuya data points around DVD actions
Expose logical actions rather than sending opaque raw IR data through the cloud. A useful command set might include:
| Category | Example actions |
|---|---|
| Transport | POWER, PLAY, PAUSE, STOP, NEXT, PREVIOUS, EJECT |
| Navigation | MENU, UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, OK, BACK |
| Playback options | SUBTITLE, AUDIO, VOLUME_UP, VOLUME_DOWN |
| Numeric input | A separate numeric value or keys 0 through 9 |
Useful reported states include last_command, last_command_result, learning_mode, learned_key, ir_transmission_busy and selected_remote.

Label power carefully. An IR-only bridge can report that a command was transmitted, but it cannot normally confirm whether the DVD player was on, received the signal or changed state. Use values such as power_state = unknown unless you add feedback through an optical sensor, electrical measurement, HDMI-CEC or another mechanism.

Tuya’s IR material identifies system data points including ir_send (DPID 201) and ir_study_code (DPID 202), but whether these are appropriate depends on the selected Tuya product definition and firmware. Tuya notes that IR functionality must be added in Product Function Definition and supported by the firmware (IR data points and troubleshooting).

on_tuya_command(command):

Keep the cloud, application and IR layers separate. The Tuya callback should select a logical action; an IR driver should handle carrier generation, pulse timing and hardware access. Use a lock or queue so simultaneous commands cannot corrupt a waveform. Store learned codes and selected profiles in nonvolatile storage so they survive reboot.
Use the supported timing peripheral and APIs for the selected ESP32 framework and version. Avoid copying obsolete ESP-IDF examples without checking compatibility. Wi-Fi activity can introduce timing pressure in poorly designed software, so hardware-assisted waveform generation is preferable where the chosen framework supports it.
Test from the bottom up
- Verify emission: Use a camera or photodiode as a basic indication that the IR LED is flashing. This does not prove correct modulation.
- Test one hard-coded command locally: Confirm that
PLAYworks before adding Tuya. - Test the complete code profile: Check repeats, toggle behavior and numeric keys.
- Test learning and replay: Compare several captures and reject truncated signals.
- Test Tuya connectivity separately: Log receipt of the data point without transmitting IR.
- Test cloud-to-IR operation: Confirm each stage in sequence.
- Reboot-test persistence: Ensure Wi-Fi credentials, authorization data and learned codes remain available.
- Stress-test: Try poor Wi-Fi, repeated commands, overlapping requests and power cycling.
Troubleshooting
The Tuya command arrives, but the DVD player does nothing
First determine whether the fault is cloud, firmware or hardware. Check the callback log, command mapping, LED polarity, transistor wiring, common ground, supply voltage, current resistor, carrier frequency, mark-and-space timings, repeat frame and line of sight. Test the IR layer with a local button to remove Tuya from the diagnosis.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLearning succeeds but replay fails
The receiver may have captured demodulated timings inaccurately, failed to preserve the carrier, truncated the frame or missed a toggle bit. The original remote may also use a special repeat frame. Capture several times, preserve the complete frame and test the transmitter with the DVD player close to the LED.

- ESP32 is a safe, reliable, and scalable to a variety of applications
Operation works only at short range
Likely causes include direct GPIO drive, excessive series resistance, weak power, poor alignment, an unsuitable carrier duty cycle or an insufficient repeat count. Replace the weak output stage with a properly sized transistor or MOSFET driver and position the LED toward the DVD receiver.
The app shows a command but the device does not react
Trace five separate events: cloud delivery, Tuya callback, application mapping, IR waveform generation and DVD reception. Logging each event prevents an app problem being confused with an electrical one.
Product changes do not appear
After changing a product’s data points during debugging, Tuya documentation notes that the device may need to be removed from the mobile app and paired again (Tuya basic features).
Authorization fails on a third-party ESP32 design
Generic third-party-chip development may require interface adaptation, separate device licensing and independently flashed credentials. Review Tuya’s SDK-acquisition requirements before committing to the hardware architecture (Tuya third-party-chip SDK guidance).
Cloud, local and commercial choices
Tuya control is useful when you need app access, scenes, automation or possible voice-assistant integration. It also introduces Internet dependence, account configuration, authorization and product-definition complexity.
For a local-only remote, an ESP32 can provide a local web interface or another local protocol without Tuya. This reduces latency and avoids cloud credentials, but it does not provide native Tuya-app control.
For a commercial product, confirm the exact ESP32 target, Tuya integration method, production authorization, OTA requirements and intended consumer-app compatibility before finalizing the PCB. Public availability of TuyaOpen or an SDK does not establish that cloud services, credentials, app services or commercial deployment are free.
