Most construction-site security cameras detect motion, record video, and send an alert. PaintCam Eve is designed to go further: it can warn a suspected intruder and, according to the manufacturer’s advertised design, potentially fire paintball-style projectiles to mark or deter them.
That makes Eve an unusual active-deterrence system rather than an ordinary CCTV camera. It may interest contractors managing isolated sites, equipment yards, and rural projects—but its automated response also raises significant questions about safety, legality, reliability, cybersecurity, and availability.

What is PaintCam Eve?
PaintCam Eve is a networked security camera with computer-vision features intended to identify people and animals, including in low-light conditions. The product family has been presented in several versions:
- Eve: the base active-deterrence model.
- Eve+: described as adding animal detection.
- Eve Pro: described as adding facial-recognition capabilities.
PaintCam has also introduced Eve Simba, a wildlife-focused system intended for farms, livestock, crops, and rural property rather than human targeting.

The company’s original coverage described PaintCam as Slovenian, while its current privacy policy identifies PaintCam Industries Pte. Ltd. as registered in Singapore. It is therefore more accurate to describe the product as coming from PaintCam and to avoid relying on a simple nationality label.
How the camera is supposed to work
PaintCam’s advertised operating logic has four stages:

- Warning: an unknown person is announced and told to leave.
- Decision: configured zones, trusted identities, and user settings determine whether escalation is allowed.
- Deterrence: the system may fire paintball-style projectiles to mark the person.
Early descriptions said an unknown person would have approximately five seconds to leave before the system could act. If an unknown person is standing with a recognized resident, the camera was described as potentially asking the owner whether to proceed. These are manufacturer-described features, not independently verified field results.
For a construction site, that distinction matters. A camera can identify visual patterns, but it cannot reliably establish that someone is committing a crime. A worker arriving outside normal hours, a delivery driver, a subcontractor, or a neighbor may look like an intruder to an automated system.

Paint marking is not the same as tear gas
Early media coverage described both paintballs and a possible tear-gas option. Current official product material reviewed for PaintCam emphasizes paintball and animal-deterrence projectiles instead. Readers should not assume that every current Eve unit includes tear-gas ammunition.
PaintCam describes its current green projectiles as .68-caliber, biodegradable, water-soluble, and non-irritant. Those are manufacturer claims, not a substitute for independent impact-safety testing. A projectile can still injure someone—particularly if it strikes the eyes, face, or a child—and a visible paint mark could trigger a confrontation.
PaintCam also warns against third-party projectiles because they may jam the mechanism, perform inconsistently, or affect the warranty. Its current projectile page should be checked for current compatibility and instructions.

Darkness, rain, fog, dust, backlighting, masks, helmets, high-visibility clothing, and unusual camera angles can all complicate classification. PaintCam’s own material acknowledges that environmental conditions can affect detection range and species-identification accuracy.
False negatives
A person may also avoid detection by approaching from a blind spot, standing outside the configured zone, hiding behind equipment or vegetation, obscuring their face, or disabling the camera’s power or network connection.

Escalation errors
An incorrect notification is inconvenient. An incorrect physical response can cause injury, property damage, conflict with a worker or member of the public, and potential civil or criminal liability. Safe mounting height, firing angle, public access routes, neighboring properties, and emergency access all need to be considered before installation.
Cybersecurity and tampering
Eve is an internet-connected device that can physically affect its surroundings. Its attack surface may include the firmware, mobile app, cloud account, Wi-Fi or cellular connection, remote controls, and identity database.

PaintCam’s privacy policy says device data may include video, images, device status, firmware, diagnostics, settings, and Wi-Fi information. A site manager should ask whether two-factor authentication, role-based access, audit logs, secure firmware updates, and a hardwired physical disable control are available.
Current availability and pricing
PaintCam’s current product material says its devices are being offered to distributors, with public availability expected later. That means Eve should not be treated as a widely available, ordinary retail security camera.
An Indiegogo listing showed campaign pricing of approximately €1,290 for Eve, €1,499 for Eve+, and €1,940 for Eve Pro. These are campaign figures rather than guaranteed standard retail prices; they may not include shipping, taxes, import costs, installation, replacement parts, or local support. Anyone considering a purchase should verify country eligibility, fulfillment status, warranty terms, and the exact current specification.

There is no universal yes-or-no answer. Legality may depend on the country, state, municipality, property layout, projectile type, chemical contents, automatic-firing settings, and whether the device can affect a public sidewalk or neighboring property.

Rules governing surveillance, recording, traps, weapons, chemical irritants, and wildlife control can all be relevant. “Non-lethal” or “non-irritant” does not automatically mean lawful or harmless. PaintCam says users are responsible for complying with applicable surveillance and recording laws and recommends checking local requirements for wildlife deployments.
Before installing an automated projectile device on a construction site, obtain jurisdiction-specific legal advice and confirm the requirements with the relevant authorities, insurer, security professional, or property owner.

- Availability: Is the unit actually shipping to your country, or is it limited to distributors or campaign backers?
- Response control: Can firing be disabled while recording remains active? Is firing automatic, owner-approved, or configurable?
- Safety controls: Is there a physical safety switch, fail-safe mode, manual override, and secure way to unload the device?
- Detection performance: Is there independent testing in darkness, rain, fog, dust, backlighting, and with helmets or face coverings?
- Physical safety: What are the projectile velocity, impact energy, effective range, safe mounting height, and safe firing angle?
- Privacy: Is processing performed on the device or in the cloud? How long are recordings and facial templates retained?
- Reliability: What happens after a power failure, network outage, firmware fault, jam, tampering attempt, or depleted cartridge?
- Total cost: Include projectiles, cartridges, installation, connectivity, replacement parts, shipping, duties, and distributor markup.
Safer options for most construction sites
Most projects will be better served by layered security that does not automatically launch a projectile:
- AI cameras that identify people, vehicles, pets, or packages and send alerts
- Bright motion-activated lighting and audible sirens
- Video doorbells or two-way intercoms at site entrances
- Professionally monitored alarms
- Temporary fencing, gates, locks, signage, and equipment tracking
- Owner-confirmed deterrence, where a person verifies the event before action is taken
Products from Ring, eufy Security, Reolink, Arlo, and TP-Link Tapo represent conventional notification-and-deterrence approaches. They are not direct equivalents to Eve: they generally record, illuminate, alert, or enable communication rather than physically marking a person.
The bottom line for contractors
PaintCam Eve is notable because it is designed to turn AI detection into physical intervention. That may be attractive for isolated sites where deterrence is important, but it also makes errors, hacking, poor installation, and legal uncertainty far more consequential than with an ordinary camera.
For now, treat Eve as a specialized, manufacturer-described active-deterrence system with limited or distributor-oriented availability—not as a proven, universally deployable replacement for site security. Demand clear safety documentation, independent testing, local compliance information, secure controls, and confirmed support before considering it for a construction project.
