What counts as large-format tile?
There is no single definition that applies across every market or standard. The Tile Shop’s 2019 installation guide uses a practical threshold: a tile with at least one side greater than 15 inches. That is a useful working definition, not a universal rule. A familiar size such as 12 × 24 inches is large in everyday design conversation, but it does not meet that guide’s greater-than-15-inch threshold on its short side; its 24-inch side does.

Size alone does not determine suitability. Check the exact product’s instructions and intended application, whether it is porcelain or ceramic, and whether it is approved for the surface and room conditions where you plan to install it.

Flatness becomes more important
A large tile spans more of the floor or wall, so it is more likely to bridge a high or low spot instead of following small surface variations. The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) has explained that unevenness is magnified with larger tiles, making lippage and misalignment harder to avoid. Fewer pieces also mean fewer opportunities to make gradual adjustments as the installation proceeds.

Flatness is not the same as level. A surface can slope and still be flat; whether it must be level depends on the project, particularly where drainage or slope is required. Ask the installer to assess the plane of the substrate and identify the applicable tolerance for your tile, substrate, and current installation method.
A 2019 retailer training guide gives 1/8 inch in 10 feet and 1/16 inch in 24 inches as substrate-variation guidance. The guide itself says it does not supersede ANSI A108.5 or the TCNA Installation Handbook, so these figures should not be treated as a universal specification for a current project. Confirm the current, application-specific requirement rather than relying on a general figure.

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Preparation and mortar need to suit the tile
Depending on what a site inspection finds, preparation may involve grinding high spots, filling low spots, or using an appropriate underlayment. These are possible approaches, not a prescription for every floor. Ask what preparation is needed and how the installer will verify the surface before setting tile.
Large-format tile mortar is a category, not a one-size-fits-all product recommendation. Tile weight and dimensions, substrate, and setting method all matter. Older guidance discusses medium-bed mortars and larger-notched trowels in its historical context; use the current instructions for the selected tile and mortar, along with the applicable installation method. Ask how mortar contact will be checked during installation. A lippage-control or leveling system can help manage adjacent tile edges, but it cannot compensate for an inadequately prepared substrate.

Handling, cuts, and room geometry take planning
Large pieces can be harder to handle and cut, and doors, corners, alcoves, drains, and other transitions affect the layout. Fewer pieces do not necessarily mean less work: a room may require more careful planning or more difficult cuts. Ask the installer to review the proposed layout and explain where full tiles, cuts, and joints will land before work begins.
Grout joints, patterns, and lippage
Joint width should account for the actual dimensional variation of the tiles supplied. A narrow joint leaves less room to accommodate differences between pieces or make layout adjustments. A TCNA article from January/February 2009 quotes ANSI A108.02 as saying, “The actual grout joint size shall be at least 3 times the actual variation of facial dimensions of the tile supplied.” That quotation is not confirmation of the current standard’s wording; ask your installer to verify today’s applicable requirement for the selected product.

Lippage is the elevation difference between the edges of adjacent tiles. Its visibility is affected not only by installation, but also by tile thickness variation and warpage, joint spacing, lighting angle, reflectivity, and the plane of the substrate. Some patterns can make differences between edges more noticeable. Discuss the tile’s dimensional consistency, planned joint width, pattern, and lighting conditions with the installer rather than assuming a leveling device will make every surface look perfectly flush.

Will large tile make a small room look bigger?
Large tiles create fewer grout lines and can make a floor or wall read as more continuous. Whether that look suits a particular room is a design choice, not a guaranteed way to make the room feel larger. Layout, cuts, lighting, grout color, and the dimensions of the space all affect the result. Consider a layout drawing or samples in the room before committing, especially if the tile’s size will create narrow cuts at walls or around fixtures.
Fewer grout lines also do not establish that large tile is cheaper, easier to clean, safer, or better for small spaces. Those outcomes depend on the product, installation, room, and maintenance conditions; the cited guidance does not demonstrate a general advantage on those points.
What to confirm before choosing it
- Application: Is this exact tile suitable for the intended floor or wall and the room’s conditions?
- Substrate: What does the surface need, and which current flatness requirement applies to this tile and installation?
- Layout: Where will full tiles, cuts, joints, transitions, and any pattern offsets fall?
- Joints: What joint width is appropriate for the actual tile dimensions and current guidance?
- Setting method: Which mortar and installation method do the product instructions call for, and how will mortar contact be checked?
- Installer capability: Has the installer handled tile of this size and planned for its transport, cutting, and placement?
- Room conditions: If the area is wet, how will waterproofing, drainage or slope, and floor traction be addressed for this specific assembly?
Special care for wet areas
No tile size is automatically appropriate for a shower, bathroom floor, or other wet location. The exact location and product matter, as do the waterproofing system, drainage or required slope, and traction underfoot. Have a qualified installer confirm the complete assembly against current product directions and applicable guidance before selecting a tile. TCNA’s 2026 handbook includes wet-area guidance, but the right specification depends on the project.

Standards and product directions can change, so older installation articles are best treated as technical context rather than a current job specification. TCNA’s 2026 TCNA Handbook covers product selection, wet areas, mortar and grout, substrate flatness, joint sizes, and workmanship. Ask the installer to apply the current guidance and the selected manufacturers’ instructions to the actual tile, substrate, and room.
