The University of Nebraska State Museum says the Regents approved a $15.9 million renovation on April 24, 2026. The work is planned for Elephant Hall and its two side galleries in Morrill Hall. The museum’s goals include extending the life of important fossils, conserving historic Elizabeth Dolan murals, and updating the space for scientific learning and natural-history education. Exhibits, fossils and conservation
The museum plans to update interpretation with newer research on mammoths and mammals of the Great Plains. The side galleries are envisioned as a walk through time, from the origins of mammals in North America and grasslands to Nebraska today. Archie the mammoth is expected to be temporarily taken down, conserved and digitized, then returned as the centerpiece; additional fossils from the museum’s research collection may also be displayed.
Nearly one-third of the project budget is planned for fossil conservation and digitization, according to the museum. Many of the fossils currently on display have been exhibited since Morrill Hall opened in 1927. The project also includes work to replace or redesign fossil armatures—the frameworks that support specimens—and conservation of the historic murals.

Freight elevator
A south-side freight elevator is part of the plan. The museum says it is intended to address safety and logistical challenges involved in moving large fossils and exhibits.
What are the budget and fundraising figures?
The museum reports a $15.9 million total project budget. It also says the project is largely donor-funded. Its project page reported that 90% had been fundraised and $2 million remained to raise as of October 9, 2026; those figures describe the campaign’s status at that time, not a final funding result. The museum also reported a $1 million award from the Lancaster County Visitors Improvement Fund.

When will construction start, and will Morrill Hall close?
The museum’s published plan calls for construction to begin in summer 2027 and finish by January 2029. These are planned dates, not a guarantee. The museum has not determined whether or when Morrill Hall will close. It says that decision will depend in part on final design and selection of a construction partner.
