An old satellite dish has four practical destinations: reuse it as a garden or construction project, convert it for an advanced antenna experiment, give it away locally, or remove and recycle it safely. Before choosing a project, identify the dish, check whether it is still mounted, and assess its weight, condition, and access. A small TV dish and a large C-band dish require very different handling.
First, identify the dish
Small DBS dish: Usually an 18- to 24-inch television dish. These are generally easiest to repurpose as garden art, planters, birdbaths, signs, or parts donors.

Large C-band or commercial dish: Several feet across, heavier, and subject to much greater wind loading. Its mount, foundation, and adjustment hardware may interest amateur-radio operators, but removal and reuse can require professional help.

Remember that the reflector is only one part of a satellite system. The original LNB, feed, receiver, cable, polarization, frequency range, aiming, and service authorization all affect whether it can receive anything. An unused reflector is usually more valuable as a curved metal structure, adjustable mount, or experimental reflector than as a ready-to-use TV antenna.
Choose an option before you remove it
- Keep it if it is structurally sound, you have a specific project, and you have safe storage and a suitable location.
- Give it away if it is large, unusual, or has a good mount but you do not need it.
- Recycle it if it is badly corroded, bent, incomplete, or has no realistic use.
- Hire help if it is roof-mounted, near electrical lines, difficult to reach, or large enough to require specialized lifting.
Do not store a dish indefinitely because it might someday become a solar cooker or radio telescope. Keep it when you have a realistic project and a safe place to install it.
The easiest old satellite dish projects
1. Garden art or outdoor sculpture
Difficulty: Easy. A damaged but structurally sound dish can become a painted moon, UFO, flower, abstract sculpture, sign, or space-themed garden feature. You can reuse the original pole and brackets or mount two dishes back-to-back.

2. Ornamental birdbath
Difficulty: Easy to moderate. The shallow curve can hold water, but treat the result as a decorative outdoor basin—not automatically as a food-safe or potable-water surface.

Clean the dish, remove the LNB and wiring, check for flaking coatings, protect sharp edges, and place it on a stable pedestal or anchored pole. Keep the water shallow and change it regularly. A low-voltage fountain pump is possible, but the pump, transformer, outdoor connections, cable routing, and ground-fault protection must be suitable for exterior use.
3. Planter or succulent bowl
Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Drill drainage holes at the low point, protect the metal against corrosion, and support the dish so it cannot tip. Use ornamental plants unless the surface has been properly assessed for contact with edible crops.

Wet soil is heavy. A dish used as a raised bed may impose much greater loads than expected, especially on a balcony, deck, wall, fence, or elevated frame. Calculate the load and provide a wide, rigid base.
4. Fountain or water feature
Difficulty: Moderate. A dish can act as a decorative spillway above a separate reservoir. Use a rigid, level support, a weatherproof low-voltage pump, a planned spill path, and anchoring against wind. Do not assume the old reflector is watertight: feed-arm openings, holes, seams, and rust may leak.
5. Trellis, sign, or garden frame
Difficulty: Easy to moderate. The pole and adjustable brackets may be more useful than the dish itself. Attach mesh or wire for climbing plants, use the reflector as a circular sign, or build an adjustable display. Remove protruding hardware and exposed coax that could catch clothing or injure children.

6. Outdoor table or umbrella base
Difficulty: Moderate to advanced. A dish is not automatically a stable table or umbrella stand. Its curved surface can catch wind, the center of gravity may be high, and the original mount may not support lateral loads. Use a wide, weighted base and rigid bracing. Avoid exposed, high-wind locations, and do not use a glass tabletop unless the support is engineered to prevent flexing and breakage.
Advanced technical reuses
Directional Wi-Fi or radio reflector
Difficulty: Advanced. A dish may serve as a directional reflector when paired with a feed designed for the target frequency. The old TV LNB is not automatically suitable for Wi-Fi, amateur radio, cellular signals, or other bands.
The feed must be positioned at the correct focal point, and frequency, polarization, impedance, cable loss, aiming, and dish condition all matter. A dish designed for one frequency range may perform poorly at another. Do not promise a particular range increase. Test with receiving equipment and measurements, and follow applicable rules before transmitting.
Amateur radio or satellite tracking
Difficulty: Advanced. An intact dish may provide a directional mount, replacement-feed platform, rotator donor, or satellite-tracking reflector. Large installations also require attention to foundation strength, wind loading, corrosion, rotator torque, lightning protection, cable routing, and local restrictions on tall structures. Consult an amateur-radio club or experienced operator before transmitting.
Radio astronomy
Difficulty: Very advanced. Possible projects may require a suitable feedhorn, low-noise amplifier, filters, receiver or software-defined radio, stable mounting, and signal-processing software. A TV LNB may not suit the intended target. Hobbyist discussions of hydrogen-line work, for example, indicate that a different feed and filtering may be needed; this is not a universal setup.

Solar concentrator
Difficulty: Advanced and safety-sensitive. The parabolic shape can concentrate sunlight, but the focal point can cause severe burns, eye injury, ignition, and property damage. Never leave it unattended or point reflected light toward windows, traffic, dry vegetation, combustible structures, children, or pets. Do not look at the focal point.
Secure the dish against wind, use a noncombustible target holder, and provide controlled temperature monitoring and fire protection. Do not assume reflective paint, foil, or mirror tiles will produce predictable results. Treat this as an experimental project, not a guaranteed low-cost oven.
Can you sell or donate it?
A standard small DBS dish often has little resale value, and shipping is usually impractical. Local pickup is the sensible option. A large dish may interest an amateur-radio operator, maker space, school, STEM program, theater group, satellite hobbyist, or scrap-metal buyer.
List the exact diameter, material if known, brand and model, mount type, motor or tracking hardware, included electronics, condition, and whether it has already been removed. Do not give away a dish with unstable hardware, severe corrosion, dangerous edges, unknown electrical damage, or a roof mount that the recipient would need to remove unsafely.

Use a professional when access is difficult
If removal requires climbing onto a roof, working near an electrical service or overhead line, handling a large dish, or repairing roof penetrations, use a qualified and appropriately insured professional. San José’s recycling guidance specifically recommends professional removal when access is unsafe. Burbank provides similar separation and disposal guidance in its satellite-dish recycling guide.
Best Value
- TV Anywhere – Enjoy live satellite television at campsites, tailgates, and on the road.
- Receiver Included – Arrives ready to connect and start watching fast.
- Travel Friendly – Compact, lightweight dome packs easily and sets up in minutes.
- Clear HD Picture – Portable satellite TV without the complicated install.
- Certified Refurbished Value – Tested for reliable performance at a lower price.
A low-risk DIY removal may be reasonable only when the dish is reachable without roof climbing, clear of electrical lines, accessible at the bolts, not under dangerous tension, and handled in calm weather with suitable tools and protective equipment.
For an accessible, low-risk installation
- Disconnect the receiver and coaxial cable indoors.
- Photograph the mount and cable routing.
- Remove the LNB or feed assembly.
- Support the dish before loosening the final bolts.
- Remove the reflector and mount as manageable pieces.
- Cap or safely secure exposed cable.
- Patch and weatherproof holes in the mounting surface.
- Sort the reflector, mount, cable, electronics, and receiver for reuse or recycling.
Never cut a pole or loosen final roof hardware while standing beneath the dish. A falling reflector can injure someone and damage property.
How to recycle the dish and electronics
Separate the assembly before looking for a drop-off location. The reflector may be aluminum, steel, or mixed metal; poles and brackets may be scrap metal; coax may have a separate electrical-recycling route; and the LNB, receiver, circuit boards, and other electronics generally require an e-waste channel.
Acceptance varies by city and county. San José advises against placing satellite dishes in ordinary garbage and provides local disposal guidance. The East Bay RE:Source guide likewise recommends separating metal, plastic, and electronic components.
Do not assume a national retailer accepts the physical reflector. Best Buy’s current recycling page lists some satellite receivers and set-top boxes but explicitly lists satellite dishes and cable rooftop dishes as not accepted.
Check the original provider for equipment-specific instructions. DIRECTV’s support page distinguishes equipment types, while DISH describes refurbishing receivers, broadband hardware, and accessories without establishing that every residential reflector can be returned.
For electronic components, the EPA identifies R2 and e-Stewards as accredited electronics-recycling standards. Use the EPA’s guidance on electronics collection options to find a local program, then confirm that it accepts your exact components, quantity, and location.
