Yes, the Schlage Sense Pro is a genuine UWB-enabled smart deadbolt with hands-free unlocking. It became available in the U.S. on June 29, 2026, at a launch price of $399. However, it is more accurate to call it one of the first commercially available UWB smart locks than the first: Aqara’s U400 is a direct competitor with the same core technology.
For Apple Home households, Sense Pro is most appealing when you want to approach the door with an iPhone in your pocket or an Apple Watch on your wrist. It is less compelling if you want a physical-key backup, fingerprint access, or the lowest-cost Apple Home Key lock.

What makes Sense Pro different?
Schlage Sense Pro uses the company’s Schlage Converge technology, combining an Apple Wallet home key with ultra-wideband, or UWB. Rather than simply detecting that an authorized phone is nearby, Schlage says the system analyzes the device’s speed, trajectory, and movement toward the door.
The intended result is hands-free entry: approach the door with a compatible device, and the lock can recognize that you are moving toward it to enter. This is different from several other forms of smart-lock convenience:

- Geofencing uses a broad location boundary. It can tell that you are near home, but not reliably that you are standing at the door.
- Bluetooth proximity unlocking detects a nearby phone but may not distinguish an intentional approach from simply passing close to the lock.
- NFC Home Key requires you to tap an iPhone or Apple Watch against the lock.
- UWB hands-free Home Key uses short-range spatial and motion information to identify an approach toward the door.
Schlage’s claim that the lock unlocks when you are ready to enter is a design goal, not independently published proof that accidental or missed unlocks never occur. Automatic unlocking also has a different risk profile from tapping, entering a code, or turning a physical key.
Is it really the first UWB smart lock?
Not conclusively. Schlage unveiled Sense Pro at CES 2025 as its first smart lock using Schlage Converge. The company announced U.S. and Canadian retail availability on June 16, 2026, with U.S. purchases beginning June 29.
Aqara unveiled the U400 at CES 2026 and also described it as one of the first home locks to bring UWB to consumers. That makes “one of the first” or “among the first commercially available” defensible. The broader claim that Sense Pro was the first is not established by the available evidence.
Compatibility: check this before buying
Schlage’s published Apple requirements for hands-free unlocking are specific:

These requirements are version-specific and may change with future hardware or software releases. “iPhone 11 or later” does not mean every later iPhone is supported, because Schlage lists explicit exclusions.
Schlage also says compatible UWB-enabled Samsung and Google devices can use hands-free unlocking, while NFC-enabled devices can use tap-to-unlock. The company’s published Apple documentation is more precise than its Android information, so Android buyers should confirm their exact model with Schlage’s current compatibility support page rather than assuming that any UWB phone will work.
Does Sense Pro require an Apple Home hub?
For Apple Home pairing, Schlage says Sense Pro requires a Thread-enabled home hub or compatible Thread border router. Listed Apple options include:
- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
- Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, Wi-Fi + Ethernet)
- HomePod (2nd generation)
- HomePod mini
- A compatible third-party Thread border router
The hub must be running current software. This is separate from the lock’s built-in Wi-Fi, which supports remote management through the Schlage Home app. Matter-over-Thread provides smart-home connectivity, while Wi-Fi provides another route for Schlage Home functions; having Wi-Fi does not remove the Thread hub requirement for Apple Home operation.

Schlage documents pairing Sense Pro with Apple Home alone or with both Apple Home and Schlage Home. Pairing with both is the documented route to the complete feature set, including hands-free entrance-mode selection. See the current pairing instructions for changing app screens and setup details.
Three hands-free modes
The Schlage Home app provides three entrance modes:
- Intuitive: unlocks as you reach the door.
- Touch: UWB tracks your approach, but you must touch the lock to unlock it.
- Delay: unlocks hands-free after a short delay when you reach the door.
Touch mode is worth considering for doors near sidewalks, driveways, or shared areas, where fully automatic unlocking may be undesirable. Delay mode provides another compromise between convenience and control.

Other ways to enter
Sense Pro is not limited to UWB. Schlage lists:
- Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock
- Keypad access codes
- Schlage Home app control
- Remote locking and unlocking
- One-touch locking
- Scheduled auto-locking
- Up to 250 unique access codes
The reviewed Schlage product material indicates that Sense Pro has no keyway. That means there is no conventional physical-key fallback. Before installation, plan how household members, guests, contractors, and emergency access will work if a phone is lost, a watch is unavailable, or the batteries are depleted. Use Schlage’s current installation and support documentation for the precise emergency-power, battery-replacement, reset, and recovery procedures rather than relying on generic smart-lock instructions.

What Matter over Thread adds
Sense Pro is Schlage’s first smart lock to support Matter over Thread, according to the company. Matter can help connect supported devices across compatible smart-home ecosystems, while Thread is the low-power mesh network used by the lock.
That does not mean every feature appears identically in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant, and other platforms. UWB hands-free unlocking depends on the compatible digital home key, device hardware, software version, Schlage Home configuration, and the relevant ecosystem. Matter also still requires an appropriate Thread border router or hub.
The product has some connection to the emerging Aliro digital-access standard, and Sense Pro appears in the Connectivity Standards Alliance product listing. Schlage’s consumer documentation, however, centers on Apple Home Key, Schlage Converge, Matter, and Thread. Buyers should not assume that future Aliro wallet or cross-platform features are available unless Schlage documents them for the specific product and region.

Setup checklist
- Confirm the door’s deadbolt dimensions, thickness, backset, alignment, latch movement, and clearance for the interior hardware.
- Install the lock and batteries using Schlage’s current installation guide.
- Install or update the Schlage Home app if you want Schlage-specific management or hands-free-mode controls.
- Pair the lock with Apple Home using a compatible Thread-enabled hub.
- Add the home key to Apple Wallet.
- Confirm the iPhone or Apple Watch meets Schlage’s hardware and software requirements.
- Select Intuitive, Touch, or Delay in Schlage Home.
- Test direct approaches, passing near the door, a phone in a pocket or bag, an Apple Watch on the wrist, and an approach with hands full.
- Keep keypad access available for guests and household members without compatible UWB devices.
Door alignment matters as much as wireless setup. A stiff latch or a door that does not close cleanly can make a smart lock appear unreliable even when the network and UWB functions are working correctly.

The Aqara U400 is the most important alternative because it offers UWB, Matter over Thread, and Apple Home Key at a materially lower listed price, while adding fingerprint and physical-key entry. Verify door compatibility, regional support, and which functions require Aqara’s ecosystem before choosing it.
Other alternatives
Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus is a better fit if you want Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock without paying for UWB hands-free entry. Yale lists it at $219.99 and offers Apple Watch compatibility, app control, and product-family options with or without a physical key. Its auto-unlock feature should not be treated as equivalent to UWB approach-based Home Key.
Schlage Encode Plus is the simpler Schlage choice for buyers who want Apple Home Key, keypad access, and familiar Schlage hardware without requiring UWB. Buyers who prioritize fingerprint access, a physical key, lower cost, Z-Wave, or a particular alarm platform may also prefer a non-UWB lock.
Who should buy Sense Pro?
Sense Pro makes the most sense if you already use Apple Home, own compatible UWB hardware, specifically want phone-in-pocket or watch-on-wrist entry, and accept the $399 premium and no-keyway design. Its 250-code capacity is useful for households, service providers, and other situations requiring many individual credentials.
Choose Aqara U400 instead if price, fingerprint access, rechargeable power, or a physical-key fallback matters more. Choose Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus or another conventional Home Key lock if tapping your phone or watch is sufficient. Sense Pro should not be the default choice for buyers without a compatible UWB device, a suitable Thread setup, or a clear plan for emergency and guest access.
