Glowforge hits restart: What the restructuring and founders’ asset purchase mean

Glowforge’s 2025 restructuring was an asset-based reboot, not simply a shutdown or confirmed federal bankruptcy. Here is what the founders acquired, what customers should verify, and how the current lineup compares.

Glowforge did not simply shut down. The laser-engraver company went through an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors in 2025, a state-level restructuring process distinct from federal bankruptcy. Co-founders Dan Shapiro and Mark Gosselin subsequently acquired key assets—including the Glowforge brand, hardware platform, software, and rights to manufacture machines in Seattle—after an independent sale process reportedly attracted no outside bidders.

The Glowforge brand and official product sales remain active. But an asset-backed restart is not the same as a purchase of the entire former company, so existing owners and prospective buyers should verify warranties, repairs, cloud-software access, parts availability, and other obligations before relying on the new operation.

The short version

  • Glowforge underwent an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors after layoffs, a failed funding round, and the closure of its Seattle manufacturing facility.
  • Dan Shapiro and Mark Gosselin bought selected key assets rather than necessarily assuming every obligation of the former business.
  • The official Glowforge website and shop continue to list machines, filters, materials, and certified-rebuilt products.
  • The restart preserves the recognizable hardware and software platform, but it does not by itself prove that all historical warranties, subscriptions, customer claims, contracts, or liabilities transferred.

The developments were reported by GeekWire on November 6, 2025. Statements about the restart’s staffing, funding, and profitability should be understood as founder statements, not audited financial findings.

How Glowforge reached the restructuring

Glowforge built its reputation around relatively accessible laser cutting and engraving: a camera-guided workflow, web-based software, and a catalog of ready-made designs. Its early crowdfunding campaign generated substantial interest, followed by retail expansion and significant venture funding. GeekWire reported that the company had raised $183 million.

Glowforge Aura 6W Laser Engraver & Cutter with HD Camera & 12-in Workspace
  • Bring Your Ideas To Life - Glowforge Aura is a compact 6W, 450nm diode beginner friendly laser engraver and cutter designed to help makers, educators, hobbyists, and small businesses to easily cut, engrave, and score wood, leather, paper, cardstock, fabric, and dark acrylic to create personalized gifts, signs, décor, jewelry, and more. Please note: Aura is not compatible with MDF, vinyl made with PVC, or white, blue, or clear acrylic.
  • Big Projects, Small Footprint - More than a wood laser engraver, Aura's spacious 12 x 12 inch workspace and built-in passthrough slot allow materials longer than the machine itself to move through the bed, making it easy to create larger signs, wall décor, and extended projects while saving valuable workspace. Routine cleaning and maintenance help ensure optimal cutting performance and long-term reliability.
  • See It Before You Make It - The proprietary Glowforge App and built-in laser engraver camera provide an HD live preview, so you can see your actual material on screen and place designs exactly where you want them before cutting or engraving. Compatible Proofgrade materials are automatically recognized and optimized for easier setup and beautiful results with less guesswork.
  • The Glowforge Ecosystem Advantage - Glowforge Aura combines an easy-to-use web-based app with Proofgrade materials, tutorials, automatic material settings, live design previews, and an active community. This complete ecosystem makes laser engraving and creating with a laser machine more approachable for first-time users with thousands of design options, all in one place.
  • Safe, Simple & Ready To Grow - The Glowforge laser engraver is a Class 1 laser product containing an embedded Class 4 laser with an engineered protective enclosure that helps block harmful laser light. Like all laser cutters, ventilation is required during operation, and the Glowforge Craft Laser Filter (sold separately) is recommended for convenient indoor use.

That growth model later came under pressure. Shapiro attributed the downturn partly to a collapse in the crafting market and cited the 2024 bankruptcy of strategic retail partner JOANN. The company also experienced multiple rounds of layoffs, a failed funding round, and the closure of its Seattle production facility.

Those factors form the reported context, but they should not be reduced to a single independently established cause. Shapiro’s explanation is a founder account rather than a formal postmortem supported by published financial statements, creditor records, or an independent investigation.

What is an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors?

An Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors, often abbreviated ABC, is a state-level process used to transfer or liquidate assets for creditors. It is not the same legal procedure as a Chapter 7 or Chapter 11 filing in federal bankruptcy court.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, an ABC can allow a distressed business’s assets to be sold or assigned while the original enterprise is wound down, reorganized, or otherwise dealt with under applicable state law. The existence of an ABC does not establish that a company “declared bankruptcy.” In Glowforge’s case, the available report describes an ABC, not a confirmed federal bankruptcy filing.

The surfaced reporting does not establish the precise legal entity involved, the creditor hierarchy, which contracts were assigned, or which liabilities were retained or discharged. Those details should not be inferred from the fact that the brand and products remain on sale.

What the founders acquired

Reported as acquired Not established by the available reporting
Glowforge’s brand and trademark Every liability of the former company
The hardware platform Every historical warranty obligation
Glowforge software Every customer, vendor, or subscription contract
Rights to manufacture additional machines in Seattle All investor claims, patents, employees, or facilities

GeekWire reported that the company’s board ran an independent sale process and that no other bidders emerged. Shapiro and Gosselin then submitted a bid funded from their personal savings, according to Shapiro.

That makes the transaction best understood as an acquisition of key operating assets and a restart of the product business—not proof that the founders bought every part of the old corporate enterprise. The report said the smaller operation could initially support approximately 20 former employees.

Who is leading the restart?

Dan Shapiro, Glowforge’s co-founder and former CEO, has been the main public spokesperson for the restart. Mark Gosselin, co-founder and former CTO, joined him in acquiring the assets. Tony Wright was also a co-founder, but GeekWire reported that he had left Glowforge in 2017; the available reporting does not indicate that he participated in the restart.

The M2 adapts to every project you imagine, from delicate engravings and high-speed batch cutting to full-color printing.

Shapiro described the new approach as a return to basics: a smaller team focused on supporting existing products, improving the hardware and software, and building a more sustainable business rather than pursuing growth at all costs. That is the stated strategy, not yet an independently verified turnaround result.

What happened to manufacturing?

Glowforge reportedly moved assembly of its highest-end machines from Mexico back to Seattle in early 2025, opened a production facility at its SoDo headquarters, and employed 15 people there. After further layoffs, that facility closed in September 2025.

The restart reportedly retained rights to manufacture additional machines in Seattle. That does not mean the former facility reopened at its previous scale, or that every current machine is made there. Glowforge’s current marketing says the Performance Series is designed, made, and serviced in the United States as of 2025, but marketing language should not be treated as independently verified information about every model, component, or production run.

What changed for customers?

The restart was presented as preserving the existing hardware and software products while concentrating on customer service and product improvements. GeekWire also reported features including:

  • Box Builder: a generative-AI feature intended to create custom box designs from plain-language descriptions.
  • Snapmarks: a feature for aligning printed items, such as stickers or iron-ons, for cutting.

Several customer-critical questions remain specific to the machine and purchase involved:

  • Does the current operating business honor a particular warranty?
  • Are accounts, old designs, catalog purchases, and subscriptions continuing under the same terms?
  • Are replacement parts and repairs available for discontinued models?
  • What happens if cloud authentication or the web-based software is interrupted?
  • Can the machine be used with a complete local software fallback?

The available reporting does not answer these questions definitively. Buyers should obtain current answers from Glowforge support and read the applicable warranty and service terms before purchasing or sending in a machine.

What existing owners should do

  1. Preserve your files. Export and locally store original design files where the software permits it. Do not rely on an online account as the only copy.
  2. Save proof of purchase. Keep receipts, serial numbers, warranty documents, and previous support correspondence together.
  3. Confirm warranty coverage in writing. Ask how the current business treats your specific model, purchase date, and seller.
  4. Check repair and parts availability. Confirm that components exist for your exact model before committing to a major repair or production schedule.
  5. Review cloud dependence. Determine what functions require an internet connection and plan for service interruptions.
  6. Do not assume automatic continuity. The existence of a live storefront does not prove that every obligation of the former company transferred unchanged.

These are sensible continuity precautions, not evidence that Glowforge support has stopped.

Craft lasers: Spark and Aura

Glowforge Spark is listed at an observed price of $899 and uses a 6-watt blue diode laser. It is aimed at compact, craft-oriented work with materials such as wood, leather, paper, and some acrylics. Its official product information lists exclusions including glass, clear acrylic, and PVC vinyl.

Glowforge Aura showed an observed sale price of $999, compared with a displayed former price of $1,199. It also uses a 6-watt blue diode laser, accepts material up to 12 by 12 inches, cuts material up to one-quarter inch thick, and engraves objects up to three-quarters of an inch high.

The Aura’s official page lists important exclusions, including glass, clear acrylic, white acrylic, blue acrylic, vinyl, and Draftboard. Lower-power diode craft lasers are therefore a poor fit for buyers whose work depends on those materials or on high-volume production.

Performance machines: Plus, Plus HD, Pro, and Pro HD

The Performance range includes 40-watt-class Plus models and 45-watt-class Pro models. They are positioned for faster cutting, thicker materials, larger workloads, schools, makerspaces, and small businesses. Relevant Pro models include Pro Passthrough for long-format workpieces.

Official pages showed new Performance-series price signals of approximately $4,999 to $7,999, depending on model and page. These machines offer broader material capability, including support for glass and clear acrylic on the Performance platform, but they require a substantially larger investment and more careful planning for workspace, ventilation, maintenance, and laser safety.

Certified-rebuilt machines

The official shop has listed observed prices of:

  • Certified-rebuilt Pro: $2,999.
  • Certified-rebuilt Plus: $2,249.
  • Certified-rebuilt Pro HD: $3,999.
  • Certified-rebuilt Plus HD: $3,499.

Lower pricing can make a rebuilt machine attractive, but it may involve greater age, availability, or support risk. The certified-rebuilt Pro page showed a three-month manufacturer’s guarantee, while new craft products displayed a 12-month warranty. Compare the written terms rather than assuming “certified-rebuilt” carries the same coverage as a new machine.

Filters, ventilation, and material safety

A filter can materially change the ownership cost. Observed official price signals included approximately $399 for a craft filter, $1,295 for a Performance filter, and $129 for a replacement craft cartridge.

A filter is not a universal safety solution. Buyers must follow the machine’s ventilation requirements, local rules, and model-specific material guidance. Never assume that a craft laser can process any plastic or sheet material: Glowforge’s product pages list prohibited or unsuitable materials, including PVC and vinyl in relevant cases. Incorrect materials can release hazardous fumes or damage the machine.

Should you buy a Glowforge after the restart?

For home hobbyists

A Spark or Aura may make sense for smaller wood, leather, paper, and craft projects when simple setup and guided software matter more than maximum power. Confirm the material list first, especially if you expect to use glass, clear acrylic, vinyl, or larger stock.

For small businesses

A Plus, Pro, or HD model may be more appropriate when speed, repeated production, thicker materials, or long workpieces are central to the business. The relevant question is not only machine capability but operational continuity: obtain clear warranty, repair, parts, software, and service information before making the machine part of a revenue-critical workflow.

For schools and makerspaces

Performance machines may offer the capacity and workflow these environments need, but institutions should plan for training, ventilation, maintenance, replacement parts, and downtime. A cloud-dependent platform also deserves an explicit contingency plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For existing owners considering an upgrade

Upgrade only after confirming that the new model solves a real limitation—material compatibility, work area, speed, or long-format work—and after checking the current warranty and service terms. A live product catalog alone is not enough evidence of long-term corporate stability.

For used-machine buyers

Before paying, verify the serial number, account-transfer process, machine history, included accessories, warranty status, and compatibility with the current cloud application. A low purchase price is not useful if the machine cannot be registered, serviced, or supplied with replacement parts.

The central risk: product continuity versus business continuity

Glowforge’s products and sales channels have survived the restructuring. That answers the first practical question: the brand and platform are still operating.

It does not answer the second: whether the smaller restarted business will provide the same level of support, investment, manufacturing capacity, or cloud-service continuity over the long term. The asset purchase creates a continuity risk that matters most to commercial users, schools, and anyone who cannot easily replace a machine or migrate a workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alternative categories may appeal to different buyers. Other diode-laser brands can offer lower hardware prices or require more setup and third-party software. CO2-laser systems are often better suited to clear acrylic and heavier production work but generally demand more space, ventilation, maintenance, and technical involvement. Craft cutters are cheaper and simpler for paper and vinyl, but they are not substitutes for laser engraving on wood, leather, or rigid materials.

Current prices, inventory, shipping, returns, financing, subscriptions, and warranty terms should be checked directly on the official Glowforge product collection and relevant product pages.

What remains unresolved

The available reporting does not establish:

  • the exact legal entity operating the restarted business;
  • which customer warranties, subscriptions, and contracts were assumed;
  • how customer-creditor claims were treated;
  • the restart’s audited financial performance;
  • its current workforce and production scale;
  • long-term cloud-service commitments; or
  • whether the business has secured new outside capital or partners.

Until those points are documented or confirmed, the most accurate description is that Glowforge has undergone an asset-based reboot. The product platform remains available, but buyers should evaluate both the machine and the durability of the company behind it.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
