Most 50-inch TVs are about 44 inches (112 cm) wide and 25–26 inches (64–66 cm) high without the stand. With the stand attached, many are roughly 27–31 inches high and 8–14 inches deep. The exact size depends on the model, bezel, stand design, and screen technology.
The “50 inches” refers to the screen’s diagonal measurement—not its width.

What does “50-inch TV” mean?
TV size is measured diagonally from one corner of the display to the opposite corner. It does not mean the television is 50 inches wide or 50 inches tall, and it does not include the stand.

A modern TV normally uses a 16:9 aspect ratio. A 50-inch diagonal 16:9 screen has an active image area of approximately:

- 24.5 inches high (62.2 cm)
- 1,069 square inches of screen area
The outer frame is slightly larger than the active image. As Samsung explains, manufacturers also use “class size” labels. For example, a current 50-inch-class Samsung model lists a 49.5-inch actual screen diagonal; this is normal rather than an indication that the TV is mislabeled.
Typical 50-inch TV dimensions
| Measurement | Typical size |
|---|---|
| Screen diagonal | 50 inches nominal; often about 49.5 inches actual |
| Active 16:9 screen width | About 43.6 inches |
| Active 16:9 screen height | About 24.5 inches |
| TV body width without stand | About 44 inches |
| TV body height without stand | About 25–26 inches |
| Height with stand | Often around 27–31 inches |
| Depth without stand | Often around 2–4 inches |
| Depth with stand | Commonly around 8–14 inches |
These are planning estimates, not universal specifications. LG’s size guide gives approximately 44 by 25.5 inches for a typical 50-inch TV, while individual models can differ considerably.
50-inch TV dimensions in centimeters
| Measurement | Approximate metric equivalent |
|---|---|
| 50-inch diagonal | 127 cm |
| 43.6-inch screen width | 110.7 cm |

Why exact dimensions vary
Two televisions with the same 50-inch diagonal can have different overall measurements because of:

A manufacturer specification sheet is therefore more reliable than a generic size chart. An older Samsung specification example measured 44.28 × 25.60 × 2.37 inches without its stand, but 44.28 × 28.97 × 13.24 inches with the stand. That illustrates how much the base can change the required height and depth; it is not a universal current measurement.

How much space does a 50-inch TV need?
For basic space planning, allow at least:
- 45 inches of horizontal space for the TV body
- 27–30 inches of vertical space when using a stand
- 12–15 inches of depth for many tabletop arrangements, including the stand and cable clearance
Leave additional room for a soundbar, power cable, HDMI plugs, ventilation, and access to rear connections. A TV that is 44 inches wide may not fit comfortably in a 44-inch opening; narrow openings need tolerance for the frame and installation.
Will a 50-inch TV fit on my TV stand?
Do not measure only the cabinet’s total width. Check these three dimensions:
- Measure the usable cabinet surface: Check its narrowest width and depth, not just the advertised size.
- Check the feet separation: The feet may sit wider apart than expected and can overhang the edges even when the TV body fits.
- Confirm clearance: Allow space for cables, ventilation, and any soundbar. Make sure the stand will support the TV’s weight.
A center pedestal may suit a narrow cabinet better than wide-set feet. Some TVs also offer alternate foot positions, but this must be confirmed in the model’s instructions.
How much wall space does a 50-inch TV need?
A wall-mounted 50-inch TV generally occupies about 44–45 inches of width and 26 inches of height. The bracket, cables, wall outlet, and ventilation may require extra clearance.

Do not choose a wall mount based only on screen size. Check the exact TV’s:
- VESA mounting pattern
- Weight without the stand
- Required screw size and screw depth
- Wall type and stud or anchor requirements
- Desired fixed, tilting, or full-motion clearance
- Port locations and cable bend space
VESA patterns are model-specific. Manufacturer specification pages from Sony, Samsung, and TCL list this information separately for each model.
How high should a 50-inch TV be mounted?
For most living rooms, position the center of the screen close to seated eye level or slightly below it. The correct height depends on the sofa, viewer height, and viewing posture. A reclining bedroom viewer may prefer a higher mount with a downward tilt.

A TV above a fireplace can be physically possible but uncomfortable if it places the screen too high or exposes it to excessive heat. Check the TV manufacturer’s installation guidance and consider the viewing angle before choosing that location.

How far away should you sit from a 50-inch TV?
There is no single correct distance. Resolution, eyesight, content, field of view, and personal preference all matter. As a practical starting point:
- About 4–6 feet: Immersive for 4K gaming or movies, but potentially large for casual viewing.
- About 6–8 feet: A comfortable range for many living-room setups.
- Beyond 8–9 feet: A 55- or 65-inch TV may make subtitles, sports, and fine detail easier to see.
LG provides different manufacturer formulas for Full HD and 4K screens, including guidance around seven feet for a 50-inch Full HD display and around 3.5 feet for a 50-inch 4K display. Treat those figures as guidance rather than rules.
50-inch TV versus nearby sizes
| TV size | Approximate width | Approximate height |
|---|---|---|
| 43 inches | 38 inches | 22 inches |
| 48 inches | 42.5 inches | 25 inches |
| 49 inches | 43 inches | 25 inches |
| 50 inches | 44 inches | 25.5 inches |
| 55 inches | 48.5 inches | 28 inches |
| 65 inches | 57 inches | 32.5 inches |
These are approximate planning dimensions based on LG’s size guide, not guaranteed outer dimensions. A 50-inch TV is only about four inches narrower than a typical 55-inch model, but the 55-inch set is also noticeably taller and may need a different cabinet or wall layout.
Special fitting situations
Inside furniture
Measure the opening at its narrowest points and leave room for the frame, ventilation, cables, plugs, and manufacturing tolerances. Confirm that the rear enclosure does not contact the furniture.

Transporting the television
Use the packaged dimensions, not the TV dimensions. The carton may be several inches larger in every direction and could affect whether it fits in a car, stairway, doorway, or elevator.
Using a soundbar
A soundbar can block the lower edge of the picture, require extra depth, interfere with an infrared sensor, or force a wall-mounted TV higher. A low-profile or wall-mounted soundbar may work better in a tight installation.
Final 50-inch TV measurement checklist
- Width without stand
- Height without stand
- Height with stand
- Depth with stand
- Distance between feet
- TV weight and cabinet load rating
- VESA pattern and mount compatibility
- Power, HDMI, and ventilation clearance
- Soundbar space
- Package dimensions and delivery access
- Viewing distance and mounting height
Before buying, open the exact model’s specification page and look for separate “with stand” and “without stand” measurements. That is the safest way to confirm whether it will fit your wall, cabinet, room, or transport route.
