For a busy kitchen, quartz and granite are strong choices to compare: Consumer Reports found strong performance from both in tests involving stains, abrasion, cutting and heat. Quartz avoids sealing for stain protection; granite offers natural slab variation, but its sealing needs depend on the particular stone. Laminate costs less and is easy to clean, while butcher block is repairable and welcoming but needs more care. The right counter depends on what you cook, how you maintain surfaces, your design priorities and local installed quotes.

How to choose a countertop for your kitchen

Compare materials across the jobs your counter actually has to do: resist stains, abrasion, cutting, heat and impacts; tolerate the amount of upkeep you will do; and fit your preferred appearance and budget. A surface can perform well in one category and still be vulnerable at an edge, seam or wet area.

Consumer Reports’ 2025 guide tested 14 countertop materials across those five performance dimensions. Its findings describe the tested materials and conditions, not every product, finish or installation on the market. Inspect the actual slab or sample you may buy, and ask the fabricator which care instructions apply to that product.

Quartz and granite: strong all-around options with different tradeoffs

Quartz (engineered stone)

Quartz is made from stone chips or minerals combined with resin and pigments. It is low maintenance and does not need sealing for stain protection. Consumer Reports describes it as waterproof enough to pair with an undermount sink, and its tests found strong performance. Patterns can look more uniform than natural stone, and edges or corners can chip; repair may require a professional.

Granite

Granite is natural stone, so each slab has its own color and pattern. Consumer Reports reported strong test performance against spills, hot pots and knives. Edges and corners can chip, and stain protection may require sealing. Sealing needs are stone-specific: Consumer Reports’ care guidance, citing the Natural Stone Institute, says most granite counters do not need sealing, though a sealer can increase moisture resistance. Ask your fabricator whether your slab needs one and follow the product’s care instructions rather than assuming a universal schedule.

Consumer Reports found both quartz and granite scored Excellent in its cutting, abrasion and heat tests. In its 2018 comparison, quartz scored 2.3 points higher out of 100 for certain stains, including beet juice and food coloring. That is a result for that test, not a guarantee for every brand, finish or spill. Both materials can chip if an edge takes a hard impact. As Chris Regan, project leader on Consumer Reports’ countertop testing, puts it: “They’re made of rock, so if you’re not careful—say you hit the edge too hard by dropping heavy weight on it—either material can chip.” Consumer Reports’ quartz-versus-granite comparison.

Laminate

Laminate layers of paper or fabric are bonded to composite wood and covered with resin. It is inexpensive relative to other options and easy to clean; Consumer Reports found strong resistance to stains, impact and heat in its tests. Its vulnerabilities are scratches and nicks, which are difficult to repair, plus seams and edges that can show. Water that gets into a seam or the backsplash joint can weaken the substrate. Use a cutting board instead of cutting directly on the surface.

Butcher block and other wood counters

Wood brings warmth and makes a useful food-preparation surface. Butcher block is relatively easy to install and repair, but requires regular care such as mineral oil or beeswax. Cuts, scrapes, heat and impacts can damage it, and humidity changes make areas around a sink or over a dishwasher poor locations.

The finish changes how wood performs. Varnish improves stain resistance but does not protect against other damage; it can scratch or melt under heat. Oil finish performed better against heat in Consumer Reports’ test, but stains spread and were difficult to remove. Oil-finished wood also needs regular oiling to reduce the risk of warping or cracking.

Other materials to consider

Marble, soapstone, limestone, concrete, recycled glass and solid surface offer different looks and material properties, but their suitability depends on the specific product and finish. Consumer Reports’ guide discusses these alternatives and notes tradeoffs; its busy-kitchen comparison highlights soapstone’s heat resistance alongside scratch and maintenance considerations. Review the particular product’s care requirements and performance details before choosing, rather than assuming a category-wide level of durability. Compare installed quotes, not just material names

There is no reliable current installed-price figure that compares all these materials across markets. Ask local fabricators for itemized quotes that cover the material, fabrication, edge profile, sink cutout, delivery and installation. This makes it easier to compare like with like and see whether a lower material price is offset by other project costs.

A practical selection checklist

  • Prioritize low upkeep: Compare quartz with granite, and confirm the care instructions for the exact product or slab.
  • Value natural variation: View the actual granite slab, since its pattern and color vary.
  • Need a lower-cost, easy-care surface: Consider laminate if you can avoid direct cutting and keep water out of seams.
  • Want a prep-friendly wood surface: Choose butcher block with a finish whose tradeoffs suit you, and avoid wet zones.
  • Considering a distinctive alternative: Check the product-specific performance and maintenance details for marble, soapstone, limestone, concrete, recycled glass or solid surface.
  • Before committing: Review fabricator and manufacturer care guidance, inspect a sample or slab, and compare itemized local installed quotes.
