Samsung appliances are South Korean in corporate origin and technological heritage, but they are not all made in South Korea. Samsung Electronics develops and produces appliances through a global network spanning Asia, North and Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The factory—and sometimes the country of manufacture—can vary by appliance category, model, destination market and production year.
That distinction matters when you are comparing a refrigerator, washer, dryer, range, dishwasher or connected-home product. “Samsung” identifies the brand; it does not, by itself, identify where the finished appliance was assembled.

There are several different origins to consider:
- Brand origin: Samsung Electronics was founded in South Korea in 1969. Samsung’s corporate history describes its development into one of South Korea’s leading manufacturers (Samsung company information).
- Design and engineering origin: Product strategy and core technology are strongly associated with Samsung’s Korean corporate base, but development can also involve research, engineering and product teams in other countries. A particular appliance should not be assumed to have been designed exclusively in Korea without model-specific documentation.
- Component origin: Motors, compressors, circuit boards, displays and other parts may come from several countries.
- Manufacturing origin: This generally means the country where the finished appliance was assembled or substantially produced.
- Market destination: The country where an appliance is sold may differ from both its design origin and manufacturing origin.
So “made by Samsung” and “made in South Korea” are not interchangeable statements.
Samsung’s South Korean appliance roots
Samsung Electronics began in 1969 as part of South Korea’s expanding electronics industry. Its appliance history is therefore part of a broader transformation—from a Korean electronics manufacturer into a multinational consumer-technology company—not a story of a company that began by making only refrigerators or washing machines.

Gwangju is the key Korean location in Samsung’s appliance history. Samsung business reports identify Gwangju as a location associated with its Home Appliance business, while current Samsung operations materials list Gwangju, Suwon and Gumi among its Korean Device eXperience (DX) sites. Samsung’s certification documentation also identifies Gwangju as a DX manufacturing location (Samsung Sustainable Operations; Samsung site certifications).
Gwangju is best described as a major Korean appliance base, not as the place where every Samsung appliance sold worldwide is made. Suwon and Gumi are important Samsung DX locations too, but the available site lists do not establish that every activity at those facilities is appliance production.

From Korean manufacturer to global production network
Samsung expanded its manufacturing footprint as its products reached more markets. Large appliances are costly and logistically complex to transport, so regional production can improve availability, shorten supply routes and help a company meet local requirements.
| Period | Development |
|---|---|
| 1969 | Samsung Electronics is founded in South Korea. |
| Historical Korean operations | Gwangju becomes an important location associated with Samsung’s home-appliance business. |
| 2015–2016 | Samsung business reports document appliance manufacturing activity in Gwangju and identify Samsung Electronics Poland Manufacturing (SEPM) as a home-appliance operation. |
| 2017 | Samsung announces a $380 million investment in a home-appliance plant in Newberry County, South Carolina, with 954 jobs projected by 2020. |
| January 2018 | Commercial production begins at Newberry, initially with washing machines. |
| 2025–2026 reporting | Samsung’s current sustainability disclosures show a broad DX manufacturing network across multiple regions, based on operating information reported for the end of 2025. |
The older business reports are useful for establishing historical roles, but they should not be treated as a complete current factory map. Samsung’s newer sustainability and operations materials are more relevant for its present site network.
Where are Samsung appliances made today?
Samsung’s 2026 sustainability reporting and sustainable-operations materials list DX manufacturing sites in numerous countries. Those documents establish Samsung’s manufacturing footprint, but they do not mean that every listed facility produces every type of appliance.
| Region | Countries and examples | What can be stated safely |
|---|---|---|
| South Korea | Gwangju, Suwon and Gumi | Gwangju has a documented appliance role; the current Korean site network includes broader DX activity. |
| North America | Newberry County, South Carolina; Mexico, including Tijuana and Querétaro-related operations | Newberry appliance production is confirmed; Mexico is part of Samsung’s current DX manufacturing network. |
| Europe | Poland, Hungary and Slovakia | Poland’s SEPM operation has a documented home-appliance manufacturing role. The category assignment of every other European site requires model-specific care. |
| Asia | China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia | These countries appear in Samsung’s current DX manufacturing materials, but the retrieved documents do not provide a complete model-by-model appliance allocation. |
| Latin America | Brazil, including Campinas and Manaus | Brazil is a current regional DX manufacturing location; not every appliance sold in Latin America should be assigned there. |
| Middle East and Africa | Egypt and Türkiye | Both are listed as regional DX manufacturing locations, with exact appliance assignments varying by product and market. |
Samsung’s current operations information is available through its global sustainable-operations page and 2026 Sustainability Report.

The United States: Newberry, South Carolina
Newberry County provides the clearest example of Samsung’s regional-production strategy. Samsung announced the facility in 2017, describing a planned $380 million investment and an expected 954 local jobs by 2020. Commercial production began in January 2018 with washing machines.
Samsung said the location offered a capable workforce, infrastructure, port access, government support and proximity to the U.S. market. The facility supports U.S. production of selected appliances, but it does not mean that every Samsung appliance sold in the United States is made in South Carolina. Imports and production at other facilities remain part of a global supply model. Samsung’s own announcements provide further context in its 2017 investment announcement, commercial-production announcement and facility FAQ.
Poland and the European market
Samsung Electronics Poland Manufacturing, or SEPM, is identified in Samsung business reports as a home-appliance manufacturing operation. Poland illustrates how a South Korean-origin brand can use a European production base to supply regional markets.
That does not justify saying that Poland makes all Samsung appliances sold in Europe. Samsung’s European network also includes sites in Hungary and Slovakia, and the product allocation of a plant can change. A finished appliance’s label is more reliable than a general regional factory list.
India, Vietnam, Mexico, Brazil and Southeast Asia
Samsung’s current materials list manufacturing operations in India, Vietnam, Mexico, Brazil, China, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, among others. India’s listed sites include Chennai and Noida; Vietnam’s operations materials refer to Hanoi- and Ho Chi Minh City-related locations; Brazil includes Campinas and Manaus; and Mexico includes operations associated with Tijuana and Querétaro.
These locations reflect substantial regional manufacturing capabilities and supply-chain infrastructure. However, the available sources do not establish a universal allocation such as “all Samsung washers are made in Vietnam” or “all refrigerators for a particular continent come from Mexico.” The exact answer depends on the model and market.

Why Samsung manufactures appliances around the world
Global production is not simply a matter of moving assembly to the cheapest possible location. It combines several practical and strategic considerations:
- Proximity to customers: Producing closer to major markets can reduce delivery times and transportation exposure.
- Logistics: Refrigerators, washers and ranges are bulky, heavy products. Regional factories can reduce the distance finished units travel.
- Supplier ecosystems: Local concentrations of metalworking, plastics, motors, electronics, packaging and logistics providers can support efficient production.
- Trade and tariffs: Regional manufacturing can reduce exposure to tariffs, border delays and changing trade rules.
- Market-specific standards: Appliances must accommodate local voltage, frequency, energy rules, water connections, safety requirements and certification systems.
- Local preferences: Cooking formats, refrigerator sizes, laundry habits, climate and housing design vary by market.
- Workforce and infrastructure: Samsung’s South Carolina explanation specifically cited workforce quality, infrastructure, ports and local support.
- Resilience: Multiple regional sites can help reduce dependence on one country or transport route when disruptions occur.
This model can improve availability and speed while making the supply chain more complex to trace.

Samsung’s appliance innovation has a Korean corporate and technology heritage, but modern appliance development is distributed across several layers.
Central teams may define platform strategy, core electronics, connected-home systems and major product technologies. Regional teams can adapt products to local cooking habits, home sizes, climate, water conditions, language and energy regulations. Factory engineers can refine production processes, testing and quality-control systems at the manufacturing site itself.
Consequently, “designed in Korea” and “made in Korea” are different claims. Neither should be assumed for every model without documentation.
How to find the actual country of manufacture
If the country of origin matters to you, verify the finished appliance rather than relying on the Samsung name or a retailer’s generic description.

- Oem Part # Bp07-00031A
- Brand Name: Samsung
- Inspect the rating plate. Depending on the product, it may be inside the refrigerator compartment, around a washer or dryer door frame, on a rear or side panel, inside an oven door frame or behind a storage drawer.
- Check the original carton. Look for wording such as “Made in,” “Manufactured in” or “Assembled in.”
- Record the complete model and serial numbers. Small variations in a model family can correspond to different markets or factories.
- Check the regional Samsung website. Search the exact model number using the Samsung site for the country where you intend to use the appliance.
- Contact Samsung support if the label is unclear. Provide the full model and serial numbers and ask specifically about the finished product’s manufacturing origin.
Do not infer the factory from the brand, a retailer listing, a nearby model number or the country printed on a component’s packaging. A product may be assembled in one country from parts made in several others, and production can move during a model’s lifetime.
Does the manufacturing country affect quality?
Country of manufacture alone is not a reliable quality ranking. Product specifications, factory process controls, supplier quality, testing, certification, transportation, installation, local electrical and water conditions, and after-sales service all matter.
Samsung reports environmental and occupational-management certifications across multiple DX locations. Those certifications are evidence of management systems at covered sites, but they do not prove identical results for every factory, product or production run. There is no sound basis for assuming that a Korean-made Samsung appliance is automatically better—or that an appliance made in Mexico, Poland, Vietnam or another country is automatically worse.
What to check before buying
Manufacturing origin is only one part of a practical appliance decision. Check:
- the exact model number;
- the finished unit’s country-of-origin label;
- warranty coverage in the purchase country;
- local service technicians and replacement parts;
- voltage, frequency, plug, water and ventilation requirements;
- regional energy certification;
- installation, delivery and haul-away terms;
- SmartThings and other connected-home compatibility in your region;
- whether an imported model is intended for your market.
Samsung’s official U.S. appliance categories and support resources are available at Samsung Home Appliances and Samsung Support. Product availability, pricing and warranty terms vary by country and should be confirmed for the specific model at the time of purchase.
How sustainability fits into the manufacturing map
Where an appliance is made also affects energy sourcing, water use, waste management and transportation. Samsung’s 2026 sustainability reporting describes renewable-energy and site-validation progress across its DX operations. Samsung reported a 94.8% renewable-energy transition for DX energy consumption by the end of 2025; that is a company-reported sustainability metric, not an independent audit established by the sources cited here.
The broader point is that a global factory network creates both opportunities and responsibilities. Regional production can reduce shipping distances, while the environmental impact of manufacturing still depends on the electricity mix, materials, water management and waste practices at each site.
