Yes—many Samsung soundbars can connect to Alexa, but not all of them. For full voice control, the soundbar generally needs Wi-Fi and SmartThings compatibility. The usual setup is to add the soundbar to Samsung SmartThings, link the Samsung account to Alexa through the Samsung Wireless Audio skill, and then discover the device in the Alexa app.
Bluetooth is different: it may send audio from an Echo to the soundbar, but it does not automatically provide smart-home controls such as input switching, network power, or reliable voice volume control.

Find the complete model number on the soundbar, packaging, manual, or Samsung support page. A designation such as HW-Q800T/ZA is more useful than simply knowing that you own a Q-series soundbar.
Check the exact model and country for these specifications:

- Wi-Fi
- SmartThings compatibility
- Works with Alexa or support for the Samsung Wireless Audio skill
- Alexa Built-in, if you want Alexa functionality integrated into the soundbar
Support varies by model, software, and region. Samsung specifically warns that Alexa availability depends on the country and model. Do not assume that every Samsung soundbar—or every version of the same series—supports Alexa. Check the model’s Samsung product listing, support page, and manual.
Alexa Built-in versus Works with Alexa
Alexa Built-in means Alexa functionality is integrated into the soundbar itself on supported products. You may not need a separate Echo for voice interaction.
A soundbar that works with Alexa may instead rely on an Echo, Echo Show, or another Alexa-enabled device to receive commands. Older Samsung models such as the HW-Q800T and HW-S60T list Wi-Fi, SmartThings compatibility, and Alexa Built-in in their specifications, but those examples do not make every Samsung model compatible.
What you need
- A Samsung soundbar that supports SmartThings and Alexa
- An Alexa-enabled device, unless Alexa is built into the soundbar
- The SmartThings app on a phone or tablet
- The Alexa app
- A Samsung account and an Amazon account
- A working home Wi-Fi network
- Updated SmartThings and Alexa apps, where possible
For network-based SmartThings features, Samsung says a Samsung account is required. The soundbar must be added to the same SmartThings account and location that you use when linking Alexa.
How to connect a compatible Samsung soundbar to Alexa
1. Add the soundbar to SmartThings
- Open the SmartThings app.
- Tap the + icon.
- Choose Device or Add device.
- Select AV or Samsung devices, depending on your app version and region.
- Choose Soundbar.
- Follow the on-screen pairing and Wi-Fi instructions.
- Assign the soundbar to the correct SmartThings location and room.
Menu names can differ by region and app version. The important result is that the soundbar appears as a device card and responds to controls in SmartThings. Samsung’s general setup guidance is available in its soundbar connection instructions.

2. Give it a simple name
Rename the device something Alexa can recognize, such as Living Room Soundbar or Bedroom Soundbar. Avoid special characters, duplicate names, and vague names such as “TV” or “Audio.” A unique room-based name reduces misunderstandings when you have several smart devices.

3. Link the soundbar to Alexa
In the Alexa app:
- Open More or Menu.
- Tap Skills & Games.
- Search for Samsung Wireless Audio.
- Enable the skill.
- Sign in with the Samsung account connected to SmartThings, if prompted.
- Approve the requested permissions.
- Choose Discover Devices, or say “Alexa, discover devices.”
Samsung identifies Samsung Wireless Audio as the Alexa skill for supported soundbars. Its U.S. instructions are available at Samsung Support.
Alternative: Alexa Settings inside SmartThings
Some supported models expose a different setup path directly in SmartThings:
- Open the soundbar’s device card in SmartThings.
- Tap More options, usually shown as three dots.
- Choose Alexa Settings.
- Select Amazon Alexa, then tap Sign In.
- Choose GET STARTED and CONTINUE SETUP.
- Sign in to Amazon and approve the permissions.
- Complete the language and setup prompts.
If Alexa Settings appears on your soundbar’s SmartThings card, use that route. If it does not, use the Samsung Wireless Audio skill in Alexa. Samsung documents this alternative for selected products and regions in its regional Alexa setup guide.
Useful Alexa commands
Use the exact device name you assigned. These are examples; available commands vary by model, source, region, and integration.

Volume and mute
- “Alexa, turn up the volume on the living room soundbar.”
- “Alexa, turn down the volume on the soundbar.”
- “Alexa, set the living room soundbar volume to 40.”
- “Alexa, mute the soundbar.”
- “Alexa, unmute the soundbar.”
Power
- “Alexa, turn on the living room soundbar.”
- “Alexa, turn off the living room soundbar.”
Power-on commands are not universal. They may fail if the soundbar is offline, network standby is disabled, or the model does not support network wake-up. Consult the manual for model-specific behavior.
Inputs and sources
- “Alexa, switch to Bluetooth on my soundbar.”
- “Alexa, switch to HDMI on my soundbar.”
- “Alexa, change the input to HDMI 1.”
Input names exposed to Alexa depend on the soundbar and integration. Some models may not recognize every label shown on the physical remote.
Music and playback
- “Alexa, play [artist, station, playlist, or song] on the soundbar.”
- “Alexa, pause the soundbar.”
- “Alexa, resume.”
- “Alexa, next song on the soundbar.”
Playback depends on your Alexa account, supported music services, location, and whether the soundbar is available as an Alexa playback target.
Bluetooth is not the same as Alexa integration
Bluetooth can be useful if your goal is simply to play Echo audio through the Samsung soundbar. The general process is to put the soundbar into Bluetooth pairing mode, open the Alexa app, select Devices, choose the Echo, open its Bluetooth settings, and pair the soundbar. Exact labels vary, so use the soundbar manual for pairing mode.

Bluetooth pairing has important limits:
- It may turn the soundbar into an audio output rather than an Alexa smart-home device.
- Alexa may not be able to change inputs or power states.
- The Echo can disconnect or revert to its own speaker.
- Only one Bluetooth source may be active at a time.
- Bluetooth latency can be distracting when watching television.
Use SmartThings and Wi-Fi when you want voice control of a supported soundbar. Use Bluetooth when you only need occasional audio playback and your soundbar lacks SmartThings support.

TV audio and Alexa are separate connections
Connecting a soundbar to a Samsung TV does not automatically connect it to Alexa. The two relationships are separate:
TV-to-soundbar audio connection ≠ soundbar-to-Alexa smart-home connection.
- HDMI ARC/eARC: Usually the strongest option for TV audio, audio-format support, and compatible control features.
- Optical: A reliable digital connection, generally with fewer capabilities than ARC/eARC.
- Bluetooth: Convenient but more susceptible to latency and narrower audio support.
- Wi-Fi: Used for supported SmartThings and network features.
HDMI ARC/eARC is not required for Alexa integration. Conversely, Alexa integration does not replace the cable or wireless connection carrying TV audio. Samsung explains these connection differences in its soundbar setup guidance.

Alexa cannot find the soundbar
- Verify that the exact model supports Wi-Fi, SmartThings, and Alexa.
- Confirm that the soundbar appears and responds in SmartThings.
- Check that SmartThings and Alexa are linked to the intended Samsung and Amazon accounts.
- Enable the correct skill: Samsung Wireless Audio.
- Run Discover Devices again.
- Use a short, unique device name without special characters.
- Confirm that the soundbar is online.
- Restart the soundbar, router, phone, and Echo.
- Update both apps.
- If necessary, disable and re-enable the skill, then rediscover devices.
It appears in SmartThings but not Alexa
This usually indicates an account, authorization, discovery, or regional-support issue. Disable and re-enable Samsung Wireless Audio, sign in with the Samsung account used by SmartThings, approve permissions again, and run discovery. Check that Alexa is using the same SmartThings location. If the problem continues, remove and re-add the soundbar in SmartThings before repeating the Alexa link.
Alexa responds but does not control it
Start with a short command such as “Alexa, set the volume of Living Room Soundbar to 30.” Then check the device name Alexa heard, the soundbar’s online status, the current source, Alexa device groups, and whether another device has a similar name. Advanced equalizer settings, surround modes, channel levels, firmware updates, and calibration may still require the remote or SmartThings app.

The soundbar disappears or turns off
Check whether the Wi-Fi password, router settings, firmware, SmartThings location, or soundbar account state changed. A factory reset can also remove network registration. Reconnect the soundbar to Wi-Fi in SmartThings and run Alexa discovery again. If network standby or remote wake is not supported, Alexa may not be able to turn the bar on while it is fully offline.
The skill is unavailable
Do not substitute an unofficial third-party skill. Check the Amazon account country, Samsung account region, exact model variant, and local Samsung support documentation. Samsung states that Alexa support varies by country and model, so a feature available in one market may not appear in another.
Which connection should you use?
| Goal | Best approach |
|---|---|
| Voice volume, mute, source, and supported power control | Wi-Fi, SmartThings, and the official Alexa integration |
| Play Echo audio through the soundbar | Bluetooth, if the soundbar supports it |
| Reliable TV sound and broad compatible audio formats | HDMI ARC/eARC |
| Connect a non-networked soundbar to Alexa controls | Usually not possible without replacing the soundbar; Bluetooth remains an audio-only workaround |
Do you need to replace the soundbar?
Usually not. First check whether the existing model can be added to SmartThings. You may only need to enable the correct Alexa skill—or use an Alexa device you already own.
Replacement makes sense when the soundbar is Bluetooth-only, cannot join SmartThings, lacks Alexa support in your country, or has unreliable or discontinued network services. Choose a replacement based on the exact product specification, not only the Samsung series name. A new HDMI cable can improve or enable the TV-to-soundbar ARC/eARC connection, but it cannot make an incompatible soundbar Alexa-compatible.
