The Fascinating Sound of Fans: What Is It Called and Why Does It Matter?

A fan’s repeating tonal sound is called the blade-pass tone. Learn how its frequency is calculated and why airflow, fan type and installation also shape what you hear.

The repeating tone linked to a fan’s rotating blades is called the blade-pass tone; its frequency is the blade passage frequency (BPF). But a fan’s sound is not just that tone: airflow, fan design and installation can add hiss, broadband noise or a low rumble. Knowing the difference helps explain what you hear and why a fan’s sound rating may not predict how it sounds once installed.

What is the repeating sound from a fan called?

ISO 13347-1 defines blade passage frequency as the “frequency of fan impeller blades passing a single fixed object.” The audible repeating tonal component associated with that frequency is commonly called the blade-pass tone. The everyday terms “hum” and “whir” may describe what a listener hears, but they do not identify one specific acoustic component. ISO 13347-1

How is blade passage frequency calculated?

The frequency depends on how fast the fan rotates and how many blades pass a fixed point in each rotation:

BPF (Hz) = fan speed (rpm) × impeller blade count ÷ 60

For a fan with a fixed blade count, increasing rotational speed raises BPF; at the same speed, a higher blade count also raises it. This describes the tone’s frequency, not its loudness or how annoying it will seem. ASHRAE also notes that blade-pass tones can have harmonics—tonal components at related higher frequencies. ASHRAE Handbook, 2023, Chapter 49

Why does a fan make more than one kind of sound?

Tonal sound from rotating blades

The blade-pass tone and its harmonics are the more clearly pitched parts of fan noise. Their prominence varies with the fan and its operating conditions.

Broadband airflow noise

Air moving through a fan, duct or nearby obstruction can produce broadband noise, heard more like a rush or hiss than a single steady pitch. The sound reaching a room depends partly on the airflow path and installation, not only on the fan itself. ASHRAE Handbook, 2023, Chapter 49

Low-frequency rumble

Some fan types and operating conditions can produce low-frequency sound. ASHRAE’s 2015 chapter describes a characteristic rumble for forward-curved housed centrifugal fans in the 16, 31.5 and 63 Hz octave bands; those bands are an example for that fan type, not a range that applies to every fan. Why does the sound matter in a building?

Sound characteristics matter when engineers select and compare fans, anticipate how equipment may sound in an application, and assess whether it meets a sound-emission limit. For a given design, ASHRAE says fan sound is generally lowest near its maximum-efficiency operating point. Inlet obstructions, poor airflow and operation away from a suitable point can increase noise. These are HVAC engineering principles, not a universal diagnosis for every household fan.

Installation also changes the result. Ducts, rooms and the way air enters or leaves the fan affect the sound a person hears. ISO’s fan sound-power method uses specified test and installation conditions and notes that acoustic system effects can be considerable when inlet or outlet airflow is not fully developed. ASHRAE likewise cautions that installed performance can differ from a fan tested alone. ISO 13347-1 · ASHRAE Handbook, 2023, Chapter 49

How should you interpret a fan’s noise rating?

A decibel figure is not a complete comparison by itself. Before comparing ratings, check that the evidence describes:

IEC 60704-2-7:2020 is a household-fan acoustic test code covering conventional fans including table, pedestal, ceiling, bladeless and tower fans. Its scope lists exclusions, including fans that are part of ventilation systems and fans designed exclusively for industrial purposes. A test-code result is useful only when the product and test conditions are relevant to the comparison. IEC 60704-2-7:2020

For construction or HVAC selection, use manufacturer acoustic data for the intended operating point and installation rather than inferring performance from blade count or a generic product description. ASHRAE identifies manufacturers as an appropriate source of product acoustic performance information. The fan must still provide the airflow the application needs.

Does a fan’s sound indicate a health or sleep effect?

The acoustic sources cited here explain sound components, testing and operating conditions; they do not establish that ordinary fan sound causes a specific health or sleep outcome. A sound’s frequency or rating alone should not be treated as evidence of such an effect.
