A construction laborer helps prepare and maintain a jobsite, move materials, use tools, and support skilled trades. It is a broad, physically demanding entry-level role—not one fixed set of duties. A formal degree is usually not required, but training, safe work practices, and the ability to handle the conditions on a particular site matter. Here is what the job involves, how people get started, what national pay data show, and where the work can lead.

What does a construction laborer do?

Laborers perform hands-on work that keeps construction projects moving. Their duties change with the employer, project, crew, and phase of work. Some focus on site preparation and cleanup; others work alongside a particular trade or operate equipment.

  • Clear debris and prepare work areas.
  • Load, unload, carry, and organize materials.
  • Dig trenches, backfill holes, and compact earth.
  • Build or dismantle bracing, scaffolding, and other temporary structures.
  • Use hand and power tools and assist tradesworkers such as electricians, plumbers, masons, and carpenters.

Road and infrastructure crews may develop skills in traffic control or use equipment such as pavement breakers, jackhammers, earth tampers, and surveying equipment. Specialized work—for example, handling explosives or operating hydraulic boring equipment—requires additional training. A helper assigned to assist one specific craft may be classified separately from a general construction laborer, so statistics that combine laborers and helpers do not describe only one type of job. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes the occupation and its typical duties.

How to become a construction laborer

Most people enter through an employer and learn on the job, often by working under the guidance of experienced crew members. A high school diploma or equivalent is not typically the minimum entry requirement, though some employers prefer one. Math and career-and-technical classes can help with measuring and other construction tasks.

The BLS 2025 Occupational Requirements Survey found that 82.0% of construction laborers had no minimum education requirement, 11.4% required prior experience, and 84.2% required on-the-job training. These national survey figures describe reported job requirements, not a promise that a specific employer will hire without credentials. See the BLS occupational requirements figures.

Common ways to start

  • Apply to an employer. Ask about the actual duties, schedule, training, required credentials, and whether work is steady or project-based.
  • Look into an apprenticeship. Some union- or trade-association-sponsored programs combine paid work with technical instruction. Availability and entry requirements vary by location and program.
  • Check task-specific credentials. Depending on the work, rigging or scaffolding credentials may support progression. Employers may require safety training or a driver’s license; verify what applies to the position rather than assuming one credential is universal.

Skills and physical demands

Teamwork, clear communication, basic math, mechanical ability, stamina, and strength are useful. The work can involve lifting and moving heavy materials, standing for long periods, and reaching, crouching, kneeling, or working in low postures. In the BLS 2025 survey, construction laborers spent an estimated 89.2% of the workday standing. That is a national estimate, not a prediction for every assignment.

What are the working conditions and risks?

Laborers may work full time, outdoors in changing weather, at heights, or in confined spaces. Schedules depend on the project: highway or bridge work may require night shifts, and weather can make some work seasonal in certain regions. BLS reports that laborers have one of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses among occupations; common injury scenarios include slips, falls, and contact with objects or equipment.

OSHA characterizes construction as high hazard. Potential risks include falls, unguarded machinery, being struck by heavy equipment, electrocution, silica dust, and asbestos. Fall hazards can include unprotected sides and openings, improperly built scaffolds, protruding rebar, and ladder misuse. OSHA’s construction safety resources and fall-protection guidance describe these risks.

Excavation and trench work

OSHA identifies cave-ins as the primary trenching and excavation hazard. Protection depends on soil and site conditions; safe access and exit, underground utilities, water accumulation, hazardous atmospheres, nearby equipment, falling loads, and traffic also matter. Excavations must be inspected by a competent person as required. Workers should follow site direction and report changed conditions; a simple depth rule is not permission to enter an excavation. Read OSHA’s Construction: Trenching and Excavation eTool.

PPE is part of a safety program

Personal protective equipment (PPE) should match the hazards and fit the worker; it does not replace controls that eliminate or reduce hazards. OSHA’s construction PPE rule requiring properly fitting equipment took effect January 13, 2025. Workers who must use PPE need training on when it is required, what type is needed, how to wear and adjust it, its limitations, and how to care for it. The employer and site determine the specific equipment—do not rely on a generic gear list. See OSHA’s construction PPE rule and OSHA’s PPE overview.

Heat safety requires planning beyond protective gear. OSHA recommends reducing exposure through work practices or engineering controls, such as scheduling strenuous work during cooler periods, reducing unnecessary exertion, providing water, using buddy systems, and planning for emergencies. OSHA’s heat-exposure guidance offers further information.

How much does a construction laborer make?

BLS reported a national median annual wage of $47,120 for construction laborers in May 2025. The median for the broader combined category of construction laborers and helpers was $46,680 in May 2025. In that combined group, the lowest 10% earned less than $34,820 and the highest 10% earned more than $76,400. These are national figures, not entry-level starting pay or a local wage quote.

Pay varies by occupation subtype and industry. For the combined laborers-and-helpers group, BLS listed a May 2025 median of $35,740 for workers in temporary help services and $47,540 in construction of buildings. What is the job outlook?

BLS projects employment for construction laborers and helpers to grow 6% from 2025 to 2035, compared with 3% projected growth for all occupations. It projects about 137,000 openings per year on average for the combined group over that period. Many openings are expected because workers transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force, including through retirement; the annual openings figure is not the same as the number of new jobs created. BLS links continued demand for laborers to construction activity and infrastructure repair or replacement.

Where can the job lead?

With experience, a laborer may move toward site oversight, supervision, or self-employment. A helper may pursue a skilled trade after gaining experience and completing the training or credentials required for that path. For example, BLS describes an electrician’s helper progressing to an electrician apprenticeship.

If you are comparing construction entry paths, look beyond national median pay. Compare the day-to-day tasks and opportunities to specialize, required credentials and training, physical demands and hazards, local wages, schedule and seasonality, and likely advancement routes. Local conditions and the specific specialty can matter more than a national occupation-wide figure.
