“The Floating Bed” can mean two very different designs: a US bed suspended from an overhead structure so it can rock gently, or a Dutch concept designed to levitate using magnets. Neither is the same as a conventional platform bed with concealed legs. If you are considering the suspended version, the key construction question is whether a suitable structure can safely accept its attachment loads—not simply whether a ceiling looks sturdy.
What does “The Floating Bed” mean?
The name refers to two distinct designs. Floating Bed Co. describes a suspended bed that moves in what it calls “omni-pendulum motion.” Universe Architecture describes a magnetic-levitation design developed with Bakker Magnetics. The first hangs from above and rocks; the second is designed to hover through magnetic forces. They should not be treated as versions of the same product.
There is also a broader furniture style sometimes called a floating bed: a conventional bed frame whose supports are set back or hidden from view. That visual effect does not mean the bed is suspended or magnetically levitated.
How the suspended US bed works—and what installation involves
Suspension and support
Floating Bed Co. says its system uses a stainless-steel frame, nautical rope, and an adjustable under-support net. The net’s tension can be changed to adjust firmness, according to the maker. Its standard package is described as an indoor Queen bed with memory foam; the company says other sizes and accessories can be discussed with it. Structure and installation
A suspended bed needs an appropriate attachment point and a structure capable of carrying the relevant loads. A ceiling finish, drywall, or an apparently solid joist is not by itself proof that an attachment is suitable. The manufacturer recommends professional installation and says a carpenter typically takes 8–16 hours, with its published estimate of $400–$1,000 for the work. That is the company’s guidance, not a local quote; actual labor, structural conditions, and building requirements vary.
Before committing, have a qualified construction professional assess the framing, load path, attachment details, and any required reinforcement for the specific installation. Ask the manufacturer for its installation requirements and have the installer reconcile them with the building’s actual structure. The company says indoor and outdoor stands are available, which may be relevant where overhead attachment is unsuitable; confirm the configuration and site requirements directly with the maker.

Capacity and motion
Floating Bed Co.’s undated FAQ states a rated capacity of 1,000 lb. Its support page says each bed is subjected to 3,000 lb of tension for two days before shipping and describes a 3:1 safety margin. Those are manufacturer statements; the cited product pages do not provide independent verification, and the figures should not be treated as a structural assessment of a particular home or installation.
How the Dutch magnetic bed is different
Universe Architecture’s design uses permanent magnets beneath the bed; four thin cables tethered to the floor are intended to make the bed appear as though it is hanging upside down. The design page names architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars as inventor and Bakker Magnetics as a technical development collaborator. Its approximate published specifications are below. The designer’s separate “One and only” page describes a planned single realization for €1.2 million, dependent on location, intended use, and a future client, with an approximate production time of 30 weeks. In a November 12, 2024 article, Floating Bed Co. associates gentle rocking with faster sleep onset, increased deep sleep, more sleep spindles, enhanced lymphatic circulation, and relaxed EEG patterns. The article does not identify or link the studies behind those statements. The available product pages do not independently establish clinical benefits specific to this bed, so treat those outcomes as claims made by the company rather than proven results for every user or for the product itself. Which kind of floating bed are you looking for?
- For gentle movement: The US suspended design is the relevant one. Check the attachment and installation requirements before assessing mattress options or accessories.
- For magnetic levitation: The Dutch design is the relevant reference, but its published account describes a single planned realization rather than ordinary retail availability.
- For the floating look: A conventional platform bed with concealed or recessed supports is a separate furniture category. Its load is carried by its frame and floor supports, not by overhead suspension or magnetic levitation.
