Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteOur short answer: The Teakhaus Professional/Traditional 20-by-15-inch teak board is the best low-maintenance and value-oriented choice for most home cooks. The John Boos Maple R-Board is the better fit if you want a classic Northern hard rock maple board, U.S. manufacturing, and a long-term durability track record. For a premium upgrade, choose the Boardsmith Maple End-Grain cutting board.
There is no single uncontested winner. Prudent Reviews named Teakhaus its overall winner after testing nine boards, while Forbes Vetted named John Boos its best overall wooden board after testing nine wooden boards and using its pick for two years. The difference comes down to what you value most: measured knife wear and low maintenance, or long-term home use and traditional maple construction.
A wooden cutting board should give you enough room to work, stay stable while you chop, and protect your knife better than a hard, unforgiving surface. It should also be realistic to clean and maintain. Those requirements point to three strong choices, but they do not point to exactly the same winner.

1. Teakhaus Professional/Traditional: best for most shoppers
Choose it if: You want one large, stable board with a forgiving work surface, relatively manageable maintenance, and strong value.

The Teakhaus Professional/Traditional Cutting Board M 106 measures 20 by 15 by 1.5 inches and weighs about 12 pounds. It is an edge-grain, reversible teak board with hand grips. Teakhaus says this model is made from FSC-certified teak, pre-oiled, hand-wash only, and not dishwasher-safe. The manufacturer recommends food-grade mineral oil two or three times per month. Those specifications apply to the cited model; do not assume that every Teakhaus board has the same certification, dimensions, or finish.
Prudent Reviews named Teakhaus its overall winner in a comparison of nine boards updated November 5, 2025. In that testing, it ranked second for knife dulling and second for chopping noise. The tester recorded a 36-point sharpness-score loss, from 315 to 351, and found no beet or chipotle staining. The board did retain a slight garlic odor after one wash. It also delivered a large work surface at a comparatively low price per square inch.
That combination makes the Teakhaus Professional cutting board the easiest recommendation for a large everyday prep board. The board is spacious enough to keep chopped ingredients in separate piles, thick enough to resist sliding, and less demanding than many untreated or highly absorbent wooden boards. It is not maintenance-free: hand washing, thorough drying, and recurring oiling remain essential.
Important trade-off: Forbes Vetted selected the Teakhaus Professional with Juice Canal as its low-maintenance pick but cautioned that teak may be relatively hard on knife edges. In other words, Teakhaus is the best fit when maintenance, surface area, noise, and value carry more weight than maximizing knife-edge preservation.
2. John Boos Maple R-Board: best classic maple alternative
Choose it if: You prefer domestic Northern hard rock maple, traditional construction, and a board with a strong long-term home-use record.
The John Boos Maple R-Board is an edge-grain, reversible maple board with hand grips. The 20-by-15-by-1.5-inch version is the size commonly discussed in testing, but the R-Board series is sold in multiple dimensions. John Boos describes its relevant products as using NSF-certified Northern Hard Rock Maple and says its boards are manufactured in the United States with domestic and imported materials.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsForbes Vetted named the John Boos Maple R-Board its best overall wooden cutting board after testing nine wooden boards made from several species, including maple, walnut, acacia, teak, beech, hinoki, and ash. Its recommendation emphasized the board’s stability, 1.5-inch thickness, durability, and relatively knife-friendly surface. Forbes also reported two years of regular home use without warping or cracking, which is meaningful evidence that a well-maintained board can last.
However, John Boos is not the low-maintenance choice. Forbes reported lingering beet staining after the first wash and says the board needs regular care. John Boos recommends its Boos Block Mystery Oil and Board Cream; Forbes describes approximately monthly conditioning as part of the maintenance routine.
Prudent Reviews reached a sharply different result for the particular John Boos R-Board it tested. That board ranked last in its knife-dulling test, with a 174-point sharpness-score loss, and retained visible beet and chipotle stains plus garlic odor after washing. This does not prove that every maple board, or every John Boos board, is hard on knives or prone to staining. It does show why the choice depends on test method, model details, and your priorities.

3. Boardsmith Maple End-Grain: best premium upgrade
Choose it if: You want premium end-grain construction and are prepared to pay more and maintain a heavier board carefully.
Forbes Vetted selected the Boardsmith Maple End-Grain cutting board as its upgrade pick. End-grain construction places the wood fibers more vertically relative to the cutting surface. It is commonly chosen for its premium feel and potential knife-friendliness, but the available evidence here does not establish a specific amount of knife-life improvement over edge grain.
The upgrade is therefore about construction, craftsmanship, and the experience of owning a substantial board—not a guaranteed performance victory. End-grain boards are generally thicker, heavier, more expensive, and more maintenance-intensive than edge-grain boards. They can also be less convenient to move, wash, and store.
Buy the Boardsmith Maple End-Grain cutting board if those trade-offs are acceptable and you want a high-end board for serious, stationary prep. Confirm current program and retail availability before publication or purchase; availability should not be assumed from the brand name alone.
Why recent testing disagrees
The two leading reviews did not evaluate the boards with an identical definition of “best.”

- Prudent Reviews updated a nine-board comparison on November 5, 2025. Its protocol included knife dulling, chopping and rocking-cut noise, staining, odor retention, and slipping or stability. Teakhaus performed consistently well across those categories and won on the combination of performance, size, and value.
- Forbes Vetted tested nine wooden boards and incorporated extended home use. It favored the John Boos Maple R-Board for durability, stability, thickness, and a relatively knife-friendly surface, while naming Teakhaus the low-maintenance pick.
Neither result should be converted into a universal rule. The Prudent Reviews result for one John Boos model should not be used to condemn all maple. The Forbes assessment of end grain should not be expanded into a promise that every end-grain board preserves knives better than every edge-grain board. The practical conclusion is more useful: Teakhaus is the stronger all-around value and care recommendation, while John Boos is the stronger traditional maple and long-term-use alternative.
Edge grain versus end grain
Edge grain
Edge-grain boards are made with the long edges of the wood strips forming the cutting surface. They generally offer a good balance of price, strength, weight, and ease of manufacture. The Teakhaus and John Boos recommendations above are edge-grain boards.
For most home cooks, edge grain is the sensible default. It provides a broad, stable work surface without the cost and weight of a thick end-grain block. The trade-off is that it may be somewhat harder on knife edges than a well-made end-grain board.
End grain
End-grain boards use the ends of wood fibers at the cutting surface. They are often thicker and more expensive, and many buyers choose them because the construction is marketed as more forgiving to knives.
Do not take “self-healing” literally. The available research supports a construction and maintenance distinction, but it does not prove that every end-grain board automatically closes cuts, avoids grooves, or outperforms every edge-grain board. End grain also needs careful drying and conditioning, and its extra weight can make ordinary cleaning inconvenient.
Teak, maple, and bamboo: which material makes sense?
Teak
Teak contains natural oils that manufacturers and reviewers associate with water resistance and easier maintenance. That is the main reason Teakhaus is the low-maintenance pick. The oil content does not make teak dishwasher-safe or eliminate the need to dry and condition the board.

Maple
Maple is a classic close-grained hardwood for cutting boards. John Boos uses Northern Hard Rock Maple in the relevant product line, and the FDA Food Code permits hard maple or an equivalently hard, close-grained wood for cutting boards and cutting blocks. That regulatory allowance is not a product ranking, nor does it mean all wooden boards are automatically safe or antibacterial.

Bamboo
Bamboo should not be treated as interchangeable with a conventional hardwood board. USDA describes bamboo as harder and less porous than hardwoods and recommends mineral oil to help retain moisture. Forbes’ testing guide states that bamboo can wear knife edges faster than wood. Bamboo can be a practical material, but it is not the obvious choice if knife feel is your top priority.
What size and thickness should you buy?
A 20-by-15-inch board is a useful main-board size for many kitchens. It gives you enough room to chop while keeping ingredients in separate piles, but it is not suitable for every counter or cabinet.
At 1.5 inches thick, the Teakhaus and tested John Boos boards are substantially more stable than thin prep boards. Greater thickness also reduces the risk of warping, but it adds weight and takes up storage space. Forbes says well-crafted wooden boards are typically between 1.25 and 2 inches thick.
- Choose 20 by 15 inches or larger if you have counter space and regularly prep multiple ingredients at once.
- Choose a smaller board if you have a compact kitchen, shallow counters, limited storage, or difficulty lifting 10- to 12-pound boards.
- Choose a thicker board for stability and long-term durability, provided you can comfortably wash and store it.
- Choose a thinner board when portability and storage matter more than maximum stability.
Do you need a juice groove?
A juice groove or canal catches liquid from a roast, watermelon, or other juicy food. It is useful when carving is a regular part of your cooking.
The cost is usable surface area. A groove reduces the flat space available for chopping and can make it harder to scrape ingredients cleanly into a bowl. Choose a grooved John Boos or Teakhaus model for frequent carving; choose a flat, reversible board for maximum prep space and a simpler everyday surface.

How to clean and maintain a wooden cutting board
- Wash after every use. Use hot, soapy water, then rinse thoroughly. This is the USDA FSIS recommendation for cutting boards.
- Dry promptly. Towel-dry the board and allow it to finish air-drying upright or on its edge so air can reach both faces.
- Never use the dishwasher unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. Teakhaus specifically says the cited board is not dishwasher-safe. Heat and prolonged water exposure can warp, split, or damage a wooden board.
- Oil when the surface looks or feels dry. Teakhaus recommends food-grade mineral oil two or three times monthly. John Boos recommends Boos Block Mystery Oil and Board Cream approximately monthly. Follow the instructions for your specific model rather than applying a random household oil.
- Sanitize when appropriate. USDA FSIS says wooden and plastic boards may be sanitized with one tablespoon of unscented liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water, followed by rinsing and drying. Use the correct dilution and do not mix bleach with other cleaners.
- Replace heavily worn boards. Retire a board when deep grooves, cracks, or damage make it difficult to clean thoroughly.
For regular maintenance, look for food-grade mineral oil for cutting boards and a compatible cutting board cream or beeswax conditioner. These are useful accessories for Teakhaus, John Boos, and other wooden boards, but they do not replace washing and drying.
Food safety: wood is not a substitute for separation and cleaning
USDA FSIS says consumers may use either wood or nonporous cutting boards. It recommends separate boards for fresh produce and bread versus raw meat, poultry, and seafood to reduce cross-contamination. A second small board is especially sensible if you routinely prepare raw proteins and ready-to-eat foods in the same kitchen.
Use a separate small cutting board for raw meat or reserve one board for produce and bread. A second board is a risk-reduction measure, not a requirement that every household must buy a particular material or model. Wash both boards after use, and do not assume that wood is inherently antibacterial or eliminates food-safety risk.

Choose plastic or another nonporous option instead if you require dishwasher cleaning, do not want to oil a board periodically, lack a dry storage location, or need a lightweight surface that can be replaced easily. Wooden boards reward routine care, but they are not the right tool for every kitchen.
How to choose
- Buy Teakhaus if you want the best balance of size, stability, noise, value, and manageable maintenance.
- Buy John Boos if classic maple, U.S. manufacturing, and a documented two-year home-use record matter most.
- Buy Boardsmith if you specifically want premium end-grain construction and accept the added cost and care.
- Add a smaller second board if you regularly prepare raw meat, poultry, or seafood alongside ready-to-eat food.
- Choose a juice groove only when you need it. Otherwise, a flat reversible board gives you more usable prep space.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is teak or maple better for a cutting board?
Teak is the better choice when you prioritize lower maintenance and moisture resistance. Maple is the better choice when you prefer a traditional close-grained hardwood, classic appearance, and long-term durability. Independent testing disagreed about which was best overall, so the right choice depends on your priorities.
Are wooden cutting boards dishwasher-safe?
Usually not. Heat and prolonged water exposure can warp or split wood. The Teakhaus model covered here is specifically labeled not dishwasher-safe, and wooden boards should be hand-washed unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.
How often should I oil a wooden cutting board?
Teakhaus recommends food-grade mineral oil two or three times per month for its 20-by-15-inch teak board. John Boos and Forbes recommend approximately monthly conditioning for the Maple R-Board. Follow the instructions for your exact model and oil when the surface begins to look dry.
Recommended Free Tools
Is end grain always better than edge grain?
No. End grain is often thicker, more expensive, and potentially more forgiving to knives, but the available evidence does not prove that every end-grain board outperforms every edge-grain board. Edge grain is usually lighter, less expensive, and easier to maintain.
Should I use separate cutting boards for meat and vegetables?
USDA FSIS recommends separate boards for fresh produce and bread versus raw meat, poultry, and seafood to reduce cross-contamination. Wash each board with hot, soapy water after use and replace boards with deep grooves or cracks that are difficult to clean.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the Teakhaus Professional/Traditional 20-by-15-inch teak board for the strongest combination of space, stability, value, and manageable care. Choose the John Boos Maple R-Board if classic maple and long-term home use are more important to you than stain resistance and low maintenance. Choose Boardsmith’s Maple End-Grain board only if you specifically want a premium, heavier construction and are willing to maintain it.
