Padauk is a durable, hard, vividly colored hardwood—but “padauk” is a trade name, not one universally defined species. In North American lumber markets, the name usually refers to African padauk, commonly identified as Pterocarpus soyauxii. Asian timbers sold as Burma padauk, India padauk, or narra come from different Pterocarpus species and should not automatically be treated as interchangeable.

African padauk is best suited to projects that benefit from strong color, wear resistance, and good dimensional stability: furniture, cabinetry, flooring, architectural joinery, turned objects, handles, carvings, veneer, and musical instruments. Its principal drawbacks are color change, coarse open grain, occasional tear-out, dust concerns, and the need to verify species and legal provenance when buying imported raw stock.

What is padauk?

Padauk is the commercial or vernacular name used for several timber species in the pantropical legume genus Pterocarpus. The common name therefore does not identify a single tree in the way that a botanical name does.

For most North American woodworking and construction discussions, African padauk means the reddish hardwood commonly sold as Pterocarpus soyauxii. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory describes this tree as native to Central and tropical West Africa, where it can reach approximately 100 to 130 feet in height with trunk diameters of roughly 2 to 4 feet.

Other names refer to different regional materials. Burma padauk is associated with Pterocarpus macrocarpus, while India padauk or narra is associated with Pterocarpus indicus. Trade names can overlap, and wood anatomy may not always distinguish individual Pterocarpus species reliably. If species, origin, or regulatory status matters to a project, ask the supplier for the scientific name and harvest region rather than relying on “padauk” alone.

How to identify African padauk

Color and figure

Freshly cut African padauk heartwood is usually vivid red, orange-red, or reddish orange. With exposure to light and air, it commonly darkens toward a deeper red, purple-brown, or brown-red. A newly milled board and a finished piece may therefore look noticeably different over time.

The sapwood is much lighter—often whitish, yellow-brown, or brown-yellow—and can be several inches wide. A strong contrast between pale sapwood and bright heartwood is common. Depending on the board, the grain may be straight or interlocked. The texture is generally coarse, and freshly worked wood may have a faint aromatic odor.

Color is useful for recognizing a likely padauk board, but it is not a reliable species test. Several Pterocarpus species have similar anatomical characteristics, and other woods may be marketed under regional or informal names. For higher-value installations or imported raw material, documentation is more dependable than appearance alone.

Padauk properties and performance

Padauk’s appeal comes from a combination of properties rather than from its color alone. It is relatively dense, hard, strong, durable, and stable in service.

Property Typical reference information for African padauk What it means in practice
Air-dry density Approximately 42–51 lb/ft³ Expect substantial weight compared with many common softwoods and lighter hardwoods.
Basic specific gravity Approximately 0.55–0.67 Density varies between boards, trees, and materials sold under the padauk name.
Janka hardness Approximately 1,710 lbf is commonly reported It resists dents and wear, but cutting tools must be sharp and adequately supported.
Volumetric shrinkage, green to oven-dry Approximately 7.6% Properly dried material is comparatively stable, but normal wood movement still has to be allowed for.

The USDA reports radial shrinkage of approximately 3.3% and tangential shrinkage of approximately 5.2%, with very small movement in service. These figures are reference values, not a guarantee for every board. Actual behavior depends on species, density, grain orientation, moisture content, drying history, and the design of the finished work.

Durability and exterior use

African padauk heartwood is rated as very durable and highly resistant to termite attack in the USDA reference material, with excellent weathering properties. That makes it attractive for demanding joinery, exterior details, doors, trim, and other applications where wear and weather exposure are concerns.

  • Ergonomic Grip for Precision Control: Designed for creators and DIYers, this ergonomic hand sander gives you comfort and precise control on every detail job.

Durability does not make padauk maintenance-free or suitable for every exterior condition. Design still controls performance: avoid water traps, provide drainage and ventilation, use sound, properly dried stock, and detail joints so seasonal movement does not split or distort the work. Sapwood should not automatically be treated as having the same decay resistance as the heartwood.

Common uses for padauk

Padauk is used for both architectural work and smaller specialty projects. Common applications include:

  • Fine furniture and cabinetmaking
  • Paneling, veneer, flooring, and architectural joinery
  • Interior and exterior trim where its durability and color are desirable
  • Carvings, decorative objects, and turned bowls
  • Tool handles, knife handles, and other high-wear handles
  • Musical instruments
  • Cutting and serving accessories, where the finish and intended use are appropriate
  • Pen blanks, bottle stoppers, handles, and other small turned objects

For a large built-in or furniture project, boards offer the most flexibility for grain matching and layout. For a small project, blanks or matched thin stock can reduce waste and shipping volume. Turning blanks are particularly practical for pens, bottle stoppers, small bowls, and similar work. If you are comparing formats, inspect padauk wood turning blanks by dimensions, moisture condition, grain orientation, and stated species—not by color alone.

Knife makers and tool-handle builders may prefer African padauk knife scales rather than general lumber. Scales are already supplied in a format suitable for laminating and shaping, but the buyer should still check thickness, matching, flatness, defects, and whether the listing identifies the wood as African padauk.

Is padauk easy to work?

Generally, yes. African padauk saws and machines well when cutters are sharp and feed rates are appropriate. It also turns well, glues readily under suitable preparation, and accepts a good finish.

Sawing, planing, and routing

The main machining issue is the possibility of tear-out from interlocked grain. Use sharp blades and router bits, take lighter passes, and pay attention to the grain direction. On a wide board, the best planing direction may change across the surface. A climb-cutting or heavy final pass can remove material aggressively but may increase the risk of losing control; use conventional, controlled cuts and follow safe machine procedures.

Because padauk is hard and dense, dull tooling will produce heat, burning, poor cuts, and unnecessary effort. Support narrow workpieces carefully, avoid forcing stock through a machine, and plan for more frequent sharpening than you might need with a softer species.

Turning

Padauk is a strong choice for turning blanks. Its vivid color and ability to take a smooth finish make it effective in small objects, while its hardness helps finished edges and profiles resist everyday wear. Secure the blank properly, use sharp turning tools, and take controlled cuts—especially where grain direction changes.

Gluing

Padauk generally glues readily, but a clean, freshly prepared surface and a suitable adhesive system remain important. Do not assume that a successful glue-up with one board proves that every piece marketed as padauk will behave identically. Remove machining dust, follow the adhesive manufacturer’s preparation and clamping instructions, and test unusual combinations or oily-looking surfaces on scrap.

Sanding and surface preparation

The coarse texture and relatively large pores can remain visible after sanding. A clear film finish can produce a smooth surface while still leaving the open-pore character apparent. If the project calls for a glassier, more uniform appearance, use a compatible pore-filling process before the final finish.

Sand progressively and inspect the surface under the lighting in which it will be used. Dust lodged in open pores can affect the appearance of clear finishes. Always test the complete finishing schedule on an offcut, including sanding, pore filling if applicable, stain or oil if used, and topcoat.

Padauk color change and finishing

Padauk’s fresh orange-red color is one of its defining attractions, but it is not permanently color-stable. Exposure commonly shifts the wood toward a darker red, purple-brown, or brown-red. The rate and extent of change depend on light exposure, finish, surface preparation, and the individual board.

Set expectations before installation or delivery: a sample made from freshly cut stock may not remain a perfect color match months or years later. When color consistency matters, buy enough material from the same batch, arrange boards before cutting, and keep replacement or adjacent pieces from the same source where possible.

No finish should be presented as a guaranteed way to stop padauk from changing color. Instead:

  1. Make a sample from the actual stock.
  2. Apply the entire proposed finish schedule, not just the first coat.
  3. Compare the sample after exposure to the lighting and conditions expected in service.
  4. Confirm that the finish is compatible with the intended interior or exterior use.

Clear finishes often intensify padauk’s color and figure. The final choice should balance appearance, pore visibility, repairability, UV exposure, moisture exposure, and the maintenance requirements of the installation.

Padauk dust: safety precautions

Padauk should be machined with serious dust control. The USDA specifically warns that African padauk sawdust may cause respiratory problems, and clinical literature documents padauk among exotic woods associated with allergic contact dermatitis in occupationally exposed woodworkers. That does not mean every person will react or that the material should be described as uniformly toxic; it means exposure can irritate or sensitize some people.

Use source capture at saws, routers, planers, and sanders whenever possible. Keep airborne dust out of the breathing zone, clean with a suitable vacuum rather than dry sweeping, and use respiratory, eye, and skin protection appropriate to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and the work environment. A product category such as woodworking dust protection may include useful equipment, but no single mask or rating should be assumed to suit every operation, fit, user, or workplace.

Wear eye protection during cutting and sanding, avoid carrying contaminated dust into living areas, and wash exposed skin after work. If you develop persistent coughing, breathing difficulty, eye irritation, rash, or other symptoms, stop exposure and seek qualified medical advice. Workplace requirements may be more demanding than hobby-shop precautions.

Is padauk sustainable and legal to buy?

Padauk is not automatically illegal or unsustainable simply because it is an imported exotic hardwood. However, African Pterocarpus timber requires more careful sourcing than an anonymous, undocumented purchase suggests.

CITES materials identify relevant African Pterocarpus species as subject to Appendix II controls following the 2022 listing process. The cited timber guidance explains that the relevant controls cover materials such as logs, sawn wood, veneer sheets, plywood, and transformed wood, while finished furniture is treated differently under that specific CITES framework. National import, export, and due-diligence rules may still apply, and the exact obligations depend on the species, product form, countries involved, and transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Species identification can itself be difficult because several Pterocarpus species have similar anatomy. For imported raw lumber, ask the seller for:

  • The scientific name, preferably Pterocarpus soyauxii when African padauk is intended
  • The country or region of harvest
  • Documentation required for the shipment and destination
  • Evidence of legal supply-chain compliance
  • The form of the material—logs, sawn boards, veneer, blanks, or finished goods

A 2026 ATIBT report describes African padauk as economically important in the Central African Republic and emphasizes the need for national conservation plans and non-detriment findings for CITES-listed timber trade. The practical conclusion for a buyer is simple: provenance matters. A reputable supplier should be able to explain what the material is and where it came from, rather than offering only the broad label “padauk.”

How to buy padauk

Use this checklist before ordering or accepting delivery:

  1. Identify the type. Confirm whether the listing means African padauk, Burma padauk, India padauk or narra, or another Pterocarpus.
  2. Request the botanical name. This is especially important for commercial installations, imported raw stock, and projects requiring a predictable color or performance profile.
  3. Check moisture and condition. Look for end checks, twist, splits, excessive sapwood, machine tear-out, sticker stain, and inconsistent moisture condition.
  4. Choose the right format. Use boards for furniture and joinery, turning blanks for small turned objects, scales for knife and tool handles, and veneer or thin stock for decorative surfaces.
  5. Confirm documentation. For imported raw material, ask about applicable CITES and national requirements before purchase or shipment.
  6. Buy extra for matching. Natural variation in color, grain, sapwood content, and density can make exact matching difficult.

Small blanks are often more practical than long boards for hobbyists because they reduce shipping volume and are already sized for turning, carving, pen making, handles, or other small projects. For larger work, inspect boards in person when possible or request clear photographs of both faces, edges, ends, and any defects.

Padauk compared with ordinary project woods

Padauk is a specialist choice, not a universal replacement for domestic hardwoods. Its advantages are distinctive color, good wear resistance, durability, and relatively small movement in service. Its trade-offs include greater weight, a higher likelihood of interlocked-grain tear-out, open pores, dust precautions, color change, and the need for better provenance information.

Choose padauk when those characteristics solve a design problem or create the intended visual effect. Choose another species when a pale, color-stable surface, low-cost large-volume construction, easy local availability, or minimal dust concern is more important. In construction and architectural work, the right decision should also account for fire, code, slip, moisture, finish, maintenance, and engineering requirements that are not determined by the wood species alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is padauk the same as African padauk?

Not necessarily. “Padauk” is a broad trade name for multiple Pterocarpus species. In North American markets, African padauk commonly refers to Pterocarpus soyauxii, while Burma padauk and India padauk or narra refer to different Asian species.

Does padauk stay bright orange-red?

Usually not. Fresh African padauk is often vivid orange-red, but exposure commonly darkens it toward deeper red, purple-brown, or brown-red. Test the complete finish on an offcut and plan for natural color change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is padauk suitable for outdoor use?

African padauk heartwood is reported as very durable, termite-resistant, and good at weathering. Outdoor performance still depends on sound dry stock, drainage, ventilation, joint design, finish, and maintenance. Do not assume sapwood has the same durability as heartwood.

Is padauk safe to work with?

Padauk dust can cause respiratory problems in some people, and occupational exposure has been associated with allergic contact dermatitis. Use effective dust extraction, suitable respiratory and eye protection, and skin protection. Stop exposure and seek medical advice for persistent symptoms.

Why does padauk tear out when planed?

Interlocked grain can cause tear-out, especially with dull cutters, aggressive cuts, or an unfavorable feed direction. Use sharp tooling, lighter passes, and careful attention to grain direction.

What should I ask a padauk supplier?

Ask for the scientific name, harvest country or region, material format, moisture condition, defect information, and any CITES or national documentation relevant to the shipment. Do not rely only on the label “padauk.”

The Bottom Line

Padauk is an excellent choice when you want a hard, durable, stable hardwood with an unmistakable red-orange appearance. Treat the name as a category rather than a precise species identification, expect the color to deepen, machine interlocked grain carefully, control dust at the source, and buy imported raw material from a supplier that can document its identity and legal provenance.
