The best carpet cleaner for most homes is the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam Pet Carpet Cleaner. It is a full-size extractor that combines water-and-formula spraying, brush agitation, and dirty-water extraction, and Good Housekeeping’s Cleaning Lab found it particularly effective on set-in mustard and wine stains while leaving carpets touch-dry in under 30 minutes in its quick-dry mode.
But it is not automatically the right machine for every home. A portable cleaner is more practical for occasional spills, pet accidents, upholstery, stairs, and car interiors. For several carpeted rooms, an upright extractor is the better category. And a wet-dry vacuum such as the Bissell CrossWave is useful for routine debris, wet spills, bare floors, and low-pile rugs—but should not be confused with a true deep carpet extractor.
Our editors organized the recommendations below by cleaning job, home size, and trade-off rather than treating every carpet cleaner as interchangeable.

| Most homes | Bissell Revolution HydroSteam Pet Carpet Cleaner | Excellent set-in stain performance, three cleaning modes, and a quick-dry setting | About 31 pounds and relatively demanding to store |
| Value and easy operation | Hoover SmartWash Pet Automatic Carpet Cleaner | Automatically mixes solution and dispenses or extracts based on direction of travel | Its 22-foot cord is shorter than some full-size competitors |
| Portable cleaning | Bissell Little Green Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner | Light enough for furniture, stairs, pet beds, area rugs, and car interiors | Formula requires dilution and the machine is inefficient for whole-room cleaning |
| Large homes and frequent deep cleaning | Bissell Big Green Professional Carpet Cleaner | Large tanks, long cord, long hose, and strong professional-style extraction | About 42 pounds and bulky to store |
| Area rugs and hard floors | Bissell CrossWave OmniForce | Vacuuming and wet cleaning in one cordless machine, with up to 30 minutes of runtime | Refreshes low-pile rugs but does not deep-clean carpet like an extractor |

| Small apartments and limited storage | Bissell Little Green Mini Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner | About 7 pounds, compact, and effective on small spills and overnight wine stains | Small tanks limit it to short jobs |

Best carpet cleaner overall: Bissell Revolution HydroSteam Pet
The Bissell Revolution HydroSteam Pet Carpet Cleaner is the strongest all-purpose choice when you need to deep-clean multiple rooms and want better-than-average help with stubborn stains. Good Housekeeping selected it as its top overall carpet cleaner after testing its stain removal, drying behavior, controls, maneuverability, and accessories.
#1 Best Overall
- EVERY PURCHASE SAVES PETS. Every purchase makes it possible for BISSELL to continue our support of BISSELL Pet Foundation and its mission of saving pets in need.
- OUTCLEANS THE COMPETITIVE LIGHTWEIGHT CARPET CLEANER*. This machine tackles tough everyday & pet messes made on carpet & area rugs in small spaces.
- 4-ROW DEEPREACH POWERBRUSH. Combined with powerful suction, this brush removes ground-in dirt & stains in high traffic areas that vacuums leave behind.
- COMPACT & LIGHTWEIGHT. Designed for simple storage & to easily maneuver within tight spaces.
- PRO MAX CLEAN + PROTECT. Pair with our most powerful formula with StainProtect Technology to defend against future stains.
In the Cleaning Lab’s testing, it performed strongly on set-in mustard and wine stains. Its Quick Dry mode left tested carpets touch-dry in under 30 minutes, which can be a meaningful advantage when rooms need to be used the same day. The controls are straightforward, with three cleaning modes for different levels of cleaning.
The model identified by BISSELL is 3432. Its listed equipment includes HydroSteam technology, Steam Pretreat, SteamWash Max Clean, Quick Dry, dual DirtLifter PowerBrushes, a 25-foot cord, an 8-foot hose, and a 1-gallon dirty-water tank. BISSELL also lists pet-upholstery and tough-stain tools. Those technology and performance descriptions are manufacturer specifications; the stain and dry-time findings above are Good Housekeeping test results.
Choose it if: you have several carpeted rooms, recurring pet messes, or stains that a basic portable machine cannot handle efficiently.
Keep in mind: at approximately 31 pounds, it is not a casual carry from floor to floor. Good Housekeeping also observed some suds remaining on the backstroke. Follow the recommended formula quantity and extraction passes rather than assuming more solution will clean better.
For readers comparing current listings, Bissell Revolution HydroSteam Pet Carpet Cleaner is the most appropriate starting point for a full-size deep-cleaning purchase.
Best value: Hoover SmartWash Pet Automatic
The Hoover SmartWash Pet Automatic Carpet Cleaner removes much of the measuring and technique guesswork that makes carpet extraction intimidating for first-time owners. Its automatic solution mixing means you do not have to calculate the water-to-formula ratio manually, and the machine responds to the direction in which you push it: forward motion dispenses cleaning solution, while backward motion extracts water and begins the drying process.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Good Housekeeping named it the best value because the system is unusually approachable for a full-size machine. It also has a dry-only mode, which is useful when a carpet needs additional extraction without another application of cleaning solution. Included accessories include a pre-treater wand, stair tool, antimicrobial rubber-nub tool, and an 8-foot hose.
Choose it if: you want an upright machine for periodic whole-room cleaning but would prefer automatic solution handling and simple forward/backward operation.
Keep in mind: its 22-foot cord is shorter than the 25-foot cord on the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam and Big Green. Measure outlet locations and plan your route before starting, particularly in a large room.
The Hoover SmartWash Pet Automatic Carpet Cleaner is the better fit than a small spot cleaner when value means covering multiple rooms with less manual setup.

Best portable carpet cleaner: Bissell Little Green
The standard Bissell Little Green Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner is designed for targeted work, not wall-to-wall extraction. It is a strong choice for spills, pet accidents, furniture, stairs, pet beds, area rugs, and vehicle interiors.
Good Housekeeping reports a machine weighing about 9.65 pounds, with 48-ounce tanks, a 4-foot hose, and a 15-foot cord. Its hose-and-cord storage is relatively tidy, and the included HydroRinse tool helps flush the hose after use. The main inconvenience is that the cleaning formula must be diluted rather than mixed automatically.
BISSELL identifies the standard model as 1400B. The manufacturer lists it for upholstery, area rugs, carpet, stairs, and auto interiors, and includes a 3-inch tough-stain tool, spraying crevice tool, HydroRinse self-cleaning hose tool, and trial-size formula.
Choose it if: your cleaning problems are concentrated in specific places and you want a machine that can be carried to the mess rather than rolled across every room.
Do not choose it if: you expect to clean several rooms of wall-to-wall carpet regularly. The smaller footprint saves storage space, but the hand tool and limited working width make whole-room cleaning slow and tiring.
For a portable machine that can move from a sofa to a staircase to a car floor, compare the Bissell Little Green Portable Carpet Cleaner with the smaller Little Green Mini below.
Best professional-style option: Bissell Big Green Professional
The Bissell Big Green Professional Carpet Cleaner is the choice for large homes, frequent deep cleaning, or owners who value tank capacity and extraction over easy lifting. Good Housekeeping’s testing found carpets felt soft without becoming overly damp after cleaning.
Its practical specifications explain the recommendation: approximately 42 pounds, a 25-foot cord, a 1.75-gallon tank, a fold-flat handle, a 9-foot hose, and a tough-stain tool. The larger tank can reduce interruptions in a multi-room job, while the long cord and hose give you more reach.
Choose it if: you have substantial carpeted floor area, clean frequently, or want an extractor with a more commercial-style design.
Keep in mind: the same large components that make it useful for extended cleaning make it awkward in a small apartment, difficult to carry on stairs, and more demanding to store. BISSELL’s category page has listed the Big Green Machine Professional Carpet Cleaner at $429.99, but prices and availability are volatile; check the current listing before publication or purchase. BISSELL separately lists a Big Green PET PRO Carpet Cleaner, so confirm the exact model and included tools.
The Bissell Big Green Professional Carpet Cleaner is best viewed as a deliberate equipment purchase, not an impulse solution for one occasional spill.

- AUTOMATIC CLEANING TECHNOLOGY: Featuring a motion sensing design with auto-mix and auto-dry technology, the Hoover SmartWash+ Carpet Cleaning Machine takes the guesswork out of a clean home.
- EASY TO USE: Simply push this upright carpet cleaner forward to clean and pull back to dry - no triggers or buttons required. Powerful extraction removes water and dirt while HeatForce Technology helps dry floors faster.
- TOUGH ON GRIME, GENTLE ON FLOORS: With FlexForce PowerBrushes, SmartWash+ Carpet Cleaners gently remove deep embedded dirt and pet messes.
- AUTO MIX: This Hoover carpet cleaner machine has an Auto Mix feature that precisely mixes and dispenses solution for optimal carpet washing. Package includes 2-in-1 Pet Tool, Stair Tool, 8 ft. hose, accessory storage bag and sample cleaning solution.
- PAIR WITH HOOVER CLEANING SOLUTION: For a bright, refreshed home, use the SmartWash+ with a Hoover carpet shampoo solution. Tackle pet messes with our Pet formula or clean everyday stains with our Everyday solutions.
Best for area rugs: Bissell CrossWave OmniForce
The Bissell CrossWave OmniForce, described in the researched guide’s product link as a CrossWave Wet Dry Vacuum, is useful when your home has a mix of hard flooring, low-pile area rugs, dry debris, pet hair, and wet spills.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →It can vacuum dry debris and pet hair, wash bare floors, handle wet spills, and refresh low-pile rugs. Its cordless design and reported runtime of up to 30 minutes make it convenient for quick maintenance. It is particularly sensible when you want one machine for routine floor care rather than a dedicated extractor that comes out only for periodic deep cleaning.
Important limitation: it is not a replacement for a carpet extractor. It is less effective on deep-pile carpet, has a small dry dust cup, and does not deliver the same deep injection-and-extraction process as an upright carpet cleaner. Choose it for maintenance and mixed flooring; choose an extractor for embedded soil, recurring pet messes, or a full carpeted home.
Best for pets: Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner
The Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner is the most targeted recommendation for pet owners who repeatedly deal with accidents, stains, and odor. Good Housekeeping found it effective on both fresh and set-in stains as well as ammonia odors.
Its 64-ounce tanks are larger than those on many portable competitors, reducing the need to stop and refill during a series of spot-cleaning jobs. A retractable handle and wheels make it easier to move when full, while the 4-foot hose and rubberized-bristle pet tool are useful for picking up hair and working on upholstery or carpeted steps.
Choose it if: pet accidents are your main reason for buying a cleaner and you want more tank capacity than a compact handheld-style unit provides.
Keep in mind: it is louder and heavier when full than many portable alternatives. If storage and carrying weight matter more than tank capacity, the Little Green Mini is easier to live with.
The Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner is the more purpose-built portable option when odor and pet messes—not just occasional food spills—drive the purchase.
Best for small spaces: Bissell Little Green Mini
The Bissell Little Green Mini Portable Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner is the best match for an apartment, dorm-style room, small office, or home with very limited storage. Good Housekeeping reports a 7-pound machine with a 12-foot cord, a stationary brush, and a HydroRinse tool; its testing found good performance on overnight wine stains.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
BISSELL identifies the current Mini as model 4095 and lists a 16-ounce clean tank, 13.5-ounce dirty-water tank, 4-inch tough-stain tool, and included 8-ounce formula. The exact tank descriptions matter: the Mini is compact because it carries far less water than the standard Little Green.

- DEEP CLEAN PET MESSES IN MINUTES: Get more cleaning power with the Hoover Powerdash Pet, designed to eliminate stubborn pet stains, odors, and everyday spills from carpets and upholstery - perfect for pet owners and busy families.
- VERSATILE WHOLE-HOME CLEANING: Transform dirty carpets, high-traffic areas, tight spaces and area rugs. Antimicrobial PowerSpin Pet Brush Roll keeps the machine free from pet odors.
- LIGHTWEIGHT AND COMPACT: Featuring a lightweight and compact design, this portable carpet cleaner provides efficient cleaning power and easy storage. Ideal for apartments, condos, and RVs.
- HEATFORCE TECHNOLOGY: Built with HeatForce technology for faster drying times, helping you enjoy clean, dry carpets in no time.
- PAIR WITH HOOVER CLEANING SOLUTION: For a bright, refreshed home, use the PowerDash with a Hoover carpet shampoo solution. Tackle pet messes with our Pet formula or clean everyday stains with our Everyday solutions. Sample Solution Included.
Choose it if: you need a machine for isolated spills, stairs, furniture, pet beds, or car interiors and want the smallest practical storage footprint.
Keep in mind: the small tanks require more frequent emptying and refilling. It is convenient for spot treatment but inefficient for cleaning a whole room, especially if stains are spread across a large area.
For the smallest practical footprint, the Bissell Little Green Mini is the logical step down from the standard Little Green.

A carpet cleaner is not simply a vacuum with a water tank. A true extractor generally performs three jobs:
- Spraying: it applies a measured mixture of water and carpet-cleaning formula to the fibers.
- Agitating: rotating or powered brushes work the solution into the carpet and loosen embedded soil.
- Extracting: suction pulls the dirty liquid into a separate recovery tank.
That process is why an upright extractor is the appropriate category for periodic deep cleaning across multiple rooms, while a portable machine is better for a localized mess. A wet-dry vacuum/mop may clean the surface of a low-pile rug, but its convenience should not be mistaken for equivalent deep extraction.
“Steam cleaner” is often an inaccurate label
Many ordinary carpet extractors are marketed or casually described as steam cleaners even though they primarily spray solution and extract dirty water. Good Housekeeping cautions against using the terms interchangeably. The Bissell HydroSteam is the exception among the tested machines discussed here because it actually generates steam. For any other model, check the manufacturer’s technical description rather than assuming “steam” means steam treatment.
How to choose the right type
Choose an upright extractor when:
- You have several carpeted rooms.
- You want periodic whole-home deep cleaning.
- Pet traffic and recurring soil are spread across broad areas.
- You can accommodate the machine’s weight, cord, hose, and storage footprint.
Choose a portable spot cleaner when:
- Spills and accidents are isolated.
- You regularly clean upholstery, stairs, pet beds, area rugs, or car interiors.
- You need to respond quickly to a fresh mess.
- You prefer a lightweight machine over maximum coverage.
Choose a wet-dry vacuum/mop when:
- Your home has mostly hard floors and a few low-pile rugs.
- You want routine vacuuming and wet-spill cleanup in one cordless appliance.
- You accept that it will not deep-clean thick carpet like an extractor.
The specifications that matter in real use
Marketing claims and attachment counts are less important than the specifications that determine whether you will actually finish a job.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Filled-tank weight: a machine that is manageable empty may be difficult to carry upstairs full. Compare weight alongside tank capacity.
- Clean and dirty tank size: larger tanks are useful for multiple rooms; smaller tanks make portable machines lighter but require more interruptions.
- Cord length: a 25-foot cord can reduce outlet changes compared with a 22-foot cord, but neither replaces planning your cleaning route.
- Hose length: a longer hose helps with stairs, upholstery, and vehicle interiors without moving the main unit as often.
- Brush access: hair and debris eventually collect around brush rolls. Accessible brushes are easier to inspect and clean.
- Hose-rinse or self-cleaning tools: flushing the hose after use helps reduce the residue that can create odors.
- Storage footprint: upright machines need a stable storage location; portable machines are easier to keep ready for an emergency.
- Drying controls: a dry-only or quick-dry mode can help, but drying still depends on extraction technique, ventilation, humidity, carpet construction, and how much solution was applied.
Formula, carpet safety, and maintenance
Before using any machine, check both the carpet manufacturer’s care instructions and the carpet cleaner’s formula guidance. Good Housekeeping warns that using a non-recommended cleaning solution can affect a machine warranty, and BISSELL specifies compatible formulas for its machines.
Do not assume that extra detergent produces a cleaner result. Excess solution can leave residue, create more foam, slow drying, or complicate extraction. The correct dilution varies by model, which is one reason the Hoover SmartWash’s automatic mixing is useful and why the standard Little Green requires careful measuring.
A practical post-cleaning routine is:
- Unplug the machine before cleaning components.
- Empty and rinse the dirty-water tank promptly.
- Rinse the clean-water tank if the manufacturer instructs you to do so.
- Flush the hose using the supplied hose-rinse or HydroRinse tool where applicable.
- Remove hair and debris from the brush area.
- Allow tanks, tools, hose ends, and removable covers to dry before reassembly.
- Store the machine where the hose and tanks can ventilate rather than trapping damp residue.
For replacement supplies, use a model-compatible BISSELL carpet cleaner formula and verify compatibility before buying a hose, brush roll, tank, or other replacement component. The correct accessory depends on the exact model number, not merely the product family name.
How often should you deep-clean carpet?
Carpet manufacturers and the Carpet and Rug Institute generally recommend professional deep cleaning every 12 to 18 months. That is a maintenance guideline, not a universal deadline. Carpet type, household traffic, pets, children, allergies, visible soil, and warranty terms all matter.

Owning an extractor or portable cleaner changes the response time: you can address a spill or accident promptly instead of waiting for a scheduled service. It does not eliminate the need to follow the carpet warranty or manufacturer’s cleaning requirements. If the warranty specifies a particular cleaning method or documentation, follow those conditions.
Buy a machine, rent one, or hire a professional?
Buying makes sense when you expect recurring spills, have pets, clean several rooms more than occasionally, or want immediate access to a portable machine. A rental can be more economical for a one-time move-out or occasional large cleaning, but you still need to transport the machine, use the right formula, and return it on time. Hiring a professional carpet cleaning service may be the better option for a one-time deep clean, delicate materials, extensive staining, or anyone who does not want to store and maintain an extractor. Availability, pricing, and equipment quality vary by location, so compare a local service or carpet cleaner rental on the basis of the carpet manufacturer’s requirements and the actual scope of work.
How the recommendations were evaluated
Good Housekeeping’s Cleaning Lab says it has tested more than 20 full-size and portable carpet cleaners. Its process uses identical passes over soiled, industry-standard carpet panels, before-and-after color measurements, panel weighing to assess remaining moisture, and timed dry-down. Portable machines are also tested on fresh and set-in red-wine and chocolate stains. The Lab evaluates odor removal, weight, accessories, battery runtime when relevant, noise, assembly, maneuverability, storage, and upholstery attachments.
Those findings inform the primary recommendations here, but they should not be merged with other publications’ rankings as if every product went through one test program. Popular Mechanics’ August 6, 2026 guide also selected the Revolution HydroSteam as its best overall, while naming the Little Green Mini best value, Hoover SmartWash+ easiest to use, Tineco Carpet ONE Cruiser best for drying, and Hoover PowerDash Pet best lightweight. Its methodology combined product research, verified customer reviews, brand reliability and warranty considerations, and in-person testing of the Tineco model.

Vacuum Wars’ April 2026 snapshot used a separate standardized database protocol covering nearly 30 models, including colorimeter-based stain reduction, suction, and water-extraction measurements. It selected the Shark CarpetXpert EX151 overall, the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro Plus for value, and the Hoover PowerScrub Deluxe as a budget choice. Those are useful alternative viewpoints, not additional results from Good Housekeeping’s testing.
SharkNinja announced the Shark CarpetForce Upright Carpet Cleaner and CarpetForce HairPro Upright Carpet Cleaner on June 8, 2026, with stated launch prices of $199.99 and $229.99 and Deep Clean and Express Clean modes. The company positions the HairPro model for pet hair and describes both as lightweight and compact. Because this is manufacturer evidence rather than independent testing, these models are not ranked above the independently evaluated picks here. Availability and pricing should be verified at publication.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a portable carpet cleaner replace an upright carpet cleaner?
Usually not. Portable machines are excellent for isolated stains, upholstery, stairs, pet beds, area rugs, and car interiors, but their narrow tools and smaller tanks make whole-room carpet extraction slow and inefficient. Choose an upright when you need to deep-clean several rooms.
Is the Bissell CrossWave a deep carpet cleaner?
No. The CrossWave OmniForce can vacuum debris, handle wet spills, wash hard floors, and refresh low-pile rugs. It is not a substitute for a spray-agitate-extract carpet cleaner on deep-pile or heavily soiled carpet.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How long should carpet take to dry after cleaning?
Drying time varies with the machine, carpet construction, ventilation, humidity, solution quantity, and extraction passes. Good Housekeeping found the Revolution HydroSteam’s Quick Dry mode left tested carpets touch-dry in under 30 minutes, but that result should not be treated as a universal drying time for every room or machine.
Can I use any carpet-cleaning solution in these machines?
No. Check the machine manufacturer’s formula guidance and the carpet warranty. Non-recommended solutions can create excess foam or residue and may affect a machine warranty. Follow the exact dilution instructions for your model.
Should I buy the Little Green or Little Green Mini?
Choose the standard Little Green for larger spot-cleaning jobs because it has 48-ounce tanks, a 4-foot hose, and a 15-foot cord. Choose the Little Green Mini when storage and carrying weight matter most; it weighs about 7 pounds but has much smaller tanks, making it better for short jobs.
The Bottom Line
For most homes that need genuine deep cleaning, start with the Bissell Revolution HydroSteam Pet. Pick the Hoover SmartWash Pet Automatic if automatic solution handling matters more than cord length; the Bissell Little Green or Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner for targeted messes; the Little Green Mini for very limited storage; and the Big Green Professional for large, frequently cleaned homes. Use the CrossWave OmniForce for mixed-floor maintenance, not as a replacement for an extractor.
