Resideo’s T6 Pro Hydronic is documented for steam up to one heat stage; its CT87K is a heat-only option described for heating systems including steam. Those are manufacturer-documented candidates, not a tested ranking. Before buying, check the thermostat’s installation guide and your boiler controls.
What makes a thermostat suitable for steam heat?
A thermostat does more than report room temperature: it signals the heating equipment when to run. A model designed for a furnace or hot-water system is not automatically appropriate for steam. Look for an explicit steam application in the manufacturer’s product information or installation instructions, then verify that the thermostat supports the control wiring and voltage used by your boiler.
- Steam compatibility: Confirm that the exact model—not just the product family—is specified for steam.
- Heat stages: Check how many heating stages it supports. Resideo documents the T6 Pro Hydronic, model TH6100AF2004/U, for steam up to one heat stage.
- Control wiring and voltage: These depend on the boiler and installation. Do not assume a thermostat will work based only on its being labeled for steam.
- Cycle-rate setup: Steam systems may require a different cycle-rate setting from forced-air systems. Follow the exact thermostat’s installer instructions.
- Features: Decide whether you need scheduling, additional sensing, or a simple heat-only control. Extra features do not establish compatibility.
Documented thermostat options
These two Resideo models have published steam-related compatibility information. They are examples to evaluate against your equipment, not a comprehensive market survey or an independent comparison.
| Model | Documented steam fit | Features noted by manufacturer | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resideo T6 Pro Hydronic, TH6100AF2004/U | Hot-water heat and steam up to one heat stage, according to the product page. | Programmable; floor sensor included, with optional remote indoor-air sensing described on the product page. | Confirm your boiler’s control circuit, wiring, voltage, and stage count, and follow the product’s installation requirements. |
| Resideo CT87K heat-only thermostat | Resideo describes the Round heat-only thermostat as compatible with heating-only systems including steam; see the product page. | Heat-only control. | Confirm the exact model and that its control circuit and available features suit your system. |
A heat-only thermostat can be a reasonable category for a single heating-zone control if its specifications match the equipment. Its steam compatibility does not provide cooling control or other functions that are not part of the model.

What cycle rate should you set for steam heat?
Use the setting specified in the installation instructions for your exact thermostat. The setting is model-specific; do not transfer a value from one product’s manual to another.
- FocusPRO TH6000 Series: Resideo’s installation guide lists one cycle per hour for steam or gravity systems in its installer setup table. The same table assigns other settings to hot-water and furnace systems.
- RTH2510/RTH2410: Resideo’s advanced installation guide maps its steam or gravity option to a 30-minute cycle.
These are instructions for the named Resideo thermostat series, not a universal steam-heat rule. Consult the installer setup section for the model you are installing.
Rank #2
- · High Compatibility: Forced air (gas, oil or electric), Electric furnace, Hot water steam or gravity radiant heat, Heat only systems, Heat pump w/o auxiliary or emergency heat, Millivolt, Gas fireplaces (24V), Floor or wall furnaces, Cool only systems.(TIP: Before purchasing, check to see if this thermostat is compatible with your system.)
- · Easy to Install and Use: Large terminal blocks with universal sub-base, can be installed within 30 minutes, clear, easy-to-read backlight LCD display and easy controls make for a user-friendly experience.
- · Simple but Powerful Control: Easy-access front-load battery compartment, adjustable temperature differential (swing) for energy optimization and maximum system life, Support temperature display calibration, Convert °C/°F units, compressor delay protection (selectable on or off).
- · Not Compatible: Heat pump with auxiliary or emergency heat, Dual fuel/hybrid heating, Electric baseboard heat (110-240 volts), Line voltage, Convectors, Radiant-ceiling heat, Mini split systems and 12V RV systems.
- · Dual Power Supply: Can be powered by 24VAC power or 2 AAA batteries, No common wire (C-wire) required on most systems (only required on heat only and cool only systems).
How to choose and install one safely
- Identify the boiler and controls. Find the boiler model and determine how the existing thermostat connects to its controls. If you cannot identify the circuit or voltage safely, have a qualified heating professional do it.
- Confirm explicit steam support. Check the exact thermostat model’s manufacturer documentation for steam compatibility.
- Match stages and wiring. Verify that the thermostat supports the number of heat stages and the control circuit and voltage your installation uses.
- Check setup options. Confirm that its installer settings include the cycle-rate option appropriate to steam, and use the setting in that model’s instructions.
- Choose only features you need. Compare programming, sensing, and interface options after compatibility is established. Do not infer smart-home or power compatibility from a general steam-compatibility listing.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer compatibility information can help narrow the choices, but it is not evidence that one thermostat provides better comfort or energy savings than another. The product examples above are not an all-brand shortlist, and no independent performance testing or model-specific compatibility assessment for your boiler is established here. Retail availability and pricing can change; check current product information and retailer listings before purchasing.
