Choose ideas that fit your yard, the weather, and the children’s comfort; snow depth, space, and safe footing matter more than having special equipment.
Before you head outside: make the play area safe
Dress children in layers, insulated footwear, mittens or gloves, and a hat. Take regular warm-up breaks, and change out of wet clothes promptly. Keep an eye on how children feel; cold, damp clothing and changing conditions can make a short outing the right choice.

The American Academy of Pediatrics says, “In general, playing outside in temperatures or wind chills below -15° Fahrenheit should be avoided.” This is the AAP’s general guidance, not a universal threshold for every child or location. Read its winter outdoor-play safety guidance and use your judgment about conditions and individual needs.
For winter recreation, Health Canada also advises supervising young children, checking equipment, using helmets appropriate to the activity, protecting exposed skin from UV, and staying hydrated. Follow local rules and use approved places for activities involving ice.

Snow-day activities
These ideas need snow, though the amount and texture determine what is practical. Keep snow play in a clear area away from roads, windows, and other hazards.
1. Build a snowman
Make a small snow person or a whole family of them. Use safe natural finds for features and accessories; avoid sharp or hazardous objects.
2. Make snow angels
Find a clean, clear patch of snow, lie back, and sweep arms and legs. Check for hidden sticks, stones, or other objects first.
3. Try a snowball target challenge
Set up a target in an open part of the yard and take turns aiming. Keep snowballs away from people, animals, and windows.

4. Build a snow fort
Keep the structure simple and supervise continuously. Leave an exit opening, and do not let children use sharp tools. Snow structures can collapse and create a suffocation risk; avoid enclosed tunnels.
5. Go backyard sledding—only if the slope is suitable
A home slope is not automatically safe for sledding. Use only a clear, gentle, snow-covered slope with a flat stopping area, well away from roads and obstacles. Children should sit up or kneel, never ride headfirst, and have close adult supervision. A steerable sled offers more control than a snow disk or inner tube, but it cannot make an unsuitable slope safe. Follow local guidance; Health Canada recommends designated sledding areas.

6. Make a snow maze
Pack shallow paths through open space and let children find their way around. Keep the paths low and open rather than building roofed tunnels.
7. Paint the snow
Mix water with food dye and put it in a spray bottle to make patterns on snow, an idea suggested by Utah’s recreation agency. Start with a small amount and keep the activity in a spot where colored water will not create a slippery walkway.
8. Sculpt snow
Shape snow into simple animals, towers, or other forms. Natural materials can add details without needing special supplies.
9. Blow bubbles and watch what happens
Utah’s winter activity guide suggests trying bubbles on cold days around 14°F or lower. Treat that as a source-specific suggestion, not a guarantee that bubbles will freeze; results depend on conditions.
Activities for snow-light days
When there is little or no snow, focus on what the yard already offers: plants, trees, birds, and open space. Keep children on safe footing and observe wildlife without disturbing it.
10. Make a simple bird feeder
Utah’s guide suggests rolling pine cones in peanut butter and birdseed, then watching for visiting birds. Hang or place the feeder where children can observe without approaching wildlife too closely.

11. Look for animal tracks
Scan the ground for prints and try to notice their shape and direction. Observe from a safe distance and leave wildlife undisturbed.
12. Go on a winter nature scavenger hunt
Look for evergreens, seedpods, berries, bark patterns, or other locally safe-to-observe details. Make the goal noticing rather than collecting, especially where plants or habitats should be left alone.
13. Take winter photographs
Use a phone or camera to look closely at frost, snow patterns, winter color, and low-angle light. Invite children to find details they might otherwise pass by.
14. Go stargazing
Choose a clear night, dress for the conditions, and keep the outing short and supervised. From the yard, look for bright stars or familiar constellations.

Use stable household items or natural features for a simple route to walk around, step over, or weave through. Skip icy surfaces and unstable climbing, and leave enough room to move without collisions.
16. Take a winter or sensory walk
Walk around the yard and notice seasonal sounds, textures, and changes. Avoid icy patches and keep the route within a comfortable distance of a warm-up spot.

17. Have a winter picnic
Put a waterproof mat on a dry, sheltered spot and bring warm food or drinks. Keep an indoor warm-up option nearby so the picnic can end when children are cold.
18. Make hot cocoa part of the break
A warm drink can be a welcome pause during outdoor play. Set it on a stable surface and supervise young children around hot liquids.

19. Take a flashlight walk after dark
Keep the outing brief, stay within the yard, and supervise children. Utah’s guide suggests looking for plants, tracks, and constellations on a winter night.
20. Keep a winter nature journal
After a short observation session, draw or note the birds, tracks, weather, or changing plants you noticed. A few words or sketches are enough to build a record of what changes through the season.

21. Visit a maintained outdoor rink, if one is available
An outdoor rink maintained through winter can extend the day’s activities beyond home. Use an approved rink and follow local guidance. Do not assume a backyard pond or other natural ice is safe: ice thickness can change quickly. Health Canada identifies several factors that affect ice conditions, advises checking conditions, and says to stay off storm-water management ponds.
Keep the plan flexible
Not every activity fits every yard or winter day. Snow play needs suitable snow; sledding needs a safe slope and stopping area; a small yard may be better for observation, a short walk, or snow painting than for running games. Optional supplies such as a steerable sled, birdseed and a simple feeder, a spray bottle, or a magnifying glass can be useful, but none is needed for most of these ideas.
