Rats eat a varied diet and may prefer what is already abundant and easy to reach. Choose a suitable food they recognize, place the trap along an active route, and address the food and entry points that are drawing rats inside.
Which bait should you try first?
Start with a small amount of peanut butter on a snap trap. It is a commonly recommended option, not a guarantee of success. Other suitable choices include bacon, hot dog, pepperoni, nuts or nutmeat, chocolate candy, and dried fruit. Norway rats eat many kinds of food, including grains, meat, fish, and nuts, so a food they already encounter at the site may be more appealing than a new one.
If one bait is ignored or removed without a capture, try another food rather than assuming rats will respond to a universal favorite. Secure bait to the trigger when possible; a firmly attached piece of food is harder to steal without setting the trap.
How to choose among bait options
- What rats can already find: Consider food or pet food they have been eating. Abundant, familiar food may compete with trap bait.
- How well it stays on the trigger: Use a small amount and secure solid foods so they cannot be easily carried away.
- Whether the trap suits the rat: Use a trap intended for rats, with a trigger that is likely to activate when a rat reaches for the bait. The Internet Center for Wildlife Damage Management reports fewer bait losses and almost twice the capture rate with expanded-trigger traps than narrow-trigger versions; its displayed passage does not identify the underlying study, so this is not a universal performance guarantee. Source: Internet Center for Wildlife Damage Management.
- Where the trap can be placed safely: A good bait will not compensate for a trap placed away from rat activity or where children and pets can reach it.
Where to put a Norway rat trap
Place traps where you see droppings or other signs of activity, and along likely runways: close to walls, behind objects, and in dark corners. Norway rats often use lower parts of buildings and may burrow near foundations, but the signs at your property should guide placement.
#1 Best Overall
- GET RID OF RATS & MICE: Eliminate roof rats, Norway rats, and house mice with fast-acting rat poison bait blocks created with a high-quality rodenticide formula that controls more rodents with less bait for superior pest control results
- READY-TO-USE: Each 4 lb package contains 86 mouse bait blocks designed for immediate deployment, providing a comprehensive rat and mouse poisoning solution for indoor and outdoor use
- ATTRACT MORE RATS: The palatable mouse bait and rat bait attracts rodents out of their hiding spots and encourages continuous them to eat until a lethal dose is consumed, providing you with consistent rodent killer performance
- VERSATILE APPLICATION: This mouse poison can be used with any Victor Refillable Bait Station when baiting outdoors or within reach of people and non-target wildlife
- USE INDOORS OR OUTDOORS: Control more rodents with less bait, as these blocks are suitable to be used as rat poisoning for outdoor use and mouse poisoning for indoor use, making it an ideal rodent bait no matter the location
Set the trap so a rat following the wall crosses the trigger. UC IPM and other guidance recommend placing a snap trap perpendicular to the wall with its trigger toward the wall. Keep it inaccessible to children, pets, and other non-target animals.
What to do if rats avoid the trap
Rats may be wary of unfamiliar objects. Try prebaiting: put bait on the trap but leave it unset until a rat takes the bait, then set it. This gives rats an opportunity to approach without being startled by a snap. Guidance varies on how long to leave a trap unset, so use whether the bait is being taken—not a fixed number of days—as your cue.

Reduce the chance rats return
Trapping removes individual rats; it does not remove the conditions that attract them. Store food, pet food, and birdseed securely, remove accessible waste and other food sources, reduce clutter and shelter, address available water, and seal likely entry points. The Illinois Department of Public Health warns that trapping is ineffective when steps to prevent reinfestation are neglected. Illinois Department of Public Health: Norway Rats.
Use rodenticides cautiously
For household control, the cited guidance emphasizes trapping and exclusion. If you use a rodenticide, follow the exact product label and local rules, choose a product labeled for the intended setting, and prevent children and non-target animals from reaching the bait. Do not improvise poison mixtures or use a product contrary to its label.
