The Best Smart Light Bulbs: What a 2024 Test Found—and What to Check Before Buying in 2026

The five winners in BGR’s September 2024 comparison are useful starting points, not a verified list of the best bulbs to buy today. The guide said it tested 52 bulbs and chose Kasa for best overall, Sengled S1 for white light, OREiN for Matter, MOES for Edison style, and Govee for BR30 floodlights. But older Kasa models KL125 and KL130 appear on TP-Link’s end-of-life list, and current availability and support for the other exact models are not established here. Use the picks as category leads, then verify the model number, platform support, and fixture rating before buying.

BGR’s 2024 comparison describes its selections and reviewer impressions; TP-Link’s end-of-life list is a reason to treat legacy Kasa recommendations cautiously.

What the 52-bulb comparison selected

BGR reported testing 52 smart bulbs and named these category winners in its September 23, 2024 guide. These are the publication’s findings at that time, not an independent 2026 retest or confirmation that each model is still sold and supported.

BGR category Selected product What BGR highlighted Important qualification
Best overall Kasa Smart Light Bulbs Low cost, no dedicated hub, color options, Alexa and Google compatibility, and easy setup The guide does not establish a current replacement model. KL125 and KL130 appear on TP-Link’s end-of-life list.
Best white bulbs Sengled S1 Smart Light Bulbs Low cost, brightness, dimming from 5% to 100%, and Alexa auto-pairing BGR described the reviewed model as Alexa-only; current availability and support are not confirmed.
Best Matter bulbs OREiN Matter Smart Bulbs Multicolor operation and claimed compatibility with Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and SmartThings Matter does not ensure identical features across platforms. The guide’s 16-million-color and 25,000-hour figures are product claims, not independent measurements.
Best Edison bulbs MOES ST64 Smart Edison Light Bulbs Decorative spiral-filament look, color options, and Alexa and Google compatibility BGR noted a higher price than ordinary bulbs and that the filament appearance may not suit everyone. Current price and output are not established.
Best BR30 bulbs Govee BR30 Smart Light Bulbs Color effects, brightness, and Alexa and Google compatibility Current lumens, beam angle, outdoor rating, and enclosed-fixture suitability are not established here.

BGR’s accessible guide offers limited detail about test duration, sample counts per model, measurement equipment, network conditions, outage recovery, or platform-by-platform testing. Its ease-of-setup and reliability comments should be read as reviewer judgments, not standardized measurements. It also reviewed user feedback for OREiN; that is not the same as controlled reliability testing.

Choose the bulb shape and light type first

A19/E26 for ordinary lamps and fixtures

A19 is the familiar household bulb shape, usually with an E26 screw base in the United States. Confirm both the base and the fixture’s clearance before ordering; “smart bulb” does not mean every product fits every socket or shade.

BR30 for recessed cans and wider floodlighting

BR30 describes a reflector-style shape often used in recessed ceiling fixtures. It is not simply a brighter A19. Check the exact bulb’s diameter, base, beam angle, output, and fixture restrictions against the can and trim.

ST64/Edison for exposed decorative fixtures

An ST64 Edison-style bulb is usually chosen for its visible decorative form. The look may be more important than maximum room illumination, so check measured or specified lumens before relying on one as a room’s primary light source.

Works Exclusively with Alexa. Not compatible with Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Smart Things.
  • SIMPLE TO SET UP WITH ALEXA: Screw in the light bulb, open the Alexa app, and get started in minutes as you get notified “ First light bulb found”. Otherwise, you can add the smart bulb directly from Alexa app. No hubs or 3rd party apps or skills required. Note: Amazon Basics smart light bulbs work exclusively with Alexa to be set up with 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.
  • TRANSFORM YOUR SPACE WITH BRILLIANT COLORS: Create your perfect mood by choosing from 16 preset color selections and brightness levels from 5% to 100%. Have best moments during holiday festivities or gaming with friends or movie nights with family with different colors. Just say “Alexa, set the hall lights to purple”. Note: bulbs are dimmable via Alexa app or voice control only (not compatible with a physical dimmer.)
  • CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: Control your smart lights with Alexa app even when you are not at home e.g. from your car, office, gym. Feel secure by making your house look occupied even when you are away by creating an Alexa routine to schedule lights to turn on and off automatically.
  • GROUP CONTROL: Create groups in the Alexa app to combine lights together, allowing you to control lights by each room, or all of your home lights with a single voice command or via app. When it's time to sleep, just say “Alexa, turn off the bedroom” OR use the Alexa app to turn off the bedroom lights at once.

White-only or color-changing

White-only bulbs are often the practical choice for routine lighting. Color-changing bulbs add colored scenes and effects, but RGB features do not guarantee strong white-light quality or brightness. If you mostly need comfortable light, compare the bulb’s white range and output rather than paying for color modes you will rarely use.

Match the bulb to your platform and network

  • Alexa or Google Home: Confirm support for the exact model. Voice-assistant compatibility may provide basic on/off and dimming without exposing every manufacturer-app scene or automation.
  • Apple Home or SmartThings: Do not assume Alexa or Google support means native support here. Look for explicit platform support or a compatible Matter implementation.
  • Matter: Matter can make cross-platform setup easier, but a compatible Matter controller is still required. Thread-based products also need an appropriate Thread border router. Platform features, scenes, and schedules can differ.
  • Manufacturer app: Check whether setup, firmware updates, advanced scenes, or remote control depend on an account or cloud service. A label such as “no hub” does not mean “no router, app, or account.”

For example, TP-Link says Apple Home control of its Matter devices requires a compatible Matter hub; check the requirements for the exact device and platform in TP-Link’s Matter FAQ and its Matter guidance.

Decide whether Wi-Fi or a hub-based setup suits the home

Connection type Typical setup implication What to consider
Wi-Fi Often connects directly to the router without a dedicated lighting hub Many bulbs require 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi. A large collection can add network load, and remote or advanced functions may depend on an app or cloud service.
Bluetooth Can provide nearby phone control Remote access or broader automation may require a bridge or another supported connection.
Zigbee Typically joins a hub-based smart-home system A hub adds setup and cost but can suit a larger lighting installation.
Thread/Matter May require a Matter controller; Thread devices need a Thread border router Check controller, border-router, and platform feature requirements before purchase.

TP-Link says supported Kasa products generally use 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi and work with Alexa and Google Home; its support material says they do not support Zigbee, Z-Wave, IPv6, or Ethernet. Requirements vary by product, so use the exact model’s documentation rather than generalizing across a brand. See TP-Link’s Kasa compatibility FAQ.

Lightinginside Smart Light Bulbs Work with Alexa/Google Home/SmartLife 6PCS
  • Voice Control: After being paired with the free SmartLife app via Wi-Fi, these smart bulbs work with Alexa and Google Assistant for hands-free voice control.
  • 3× Faster Setup: With an upgraded 2nd-generation BLE + Wi-Fi dual-channel chip, setup is up to 3 times faster and more reliable.
  • Flexible Configuration: Connect locally via BLE or Wi-Fi, and enjoy remote control via Wi-Fi when you're away. After setup, the bulb intelligently switches between BLE and Wi-Fi as needed. (Note: Wi-Fi setup requires both 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and BLE for initial pairing. BLE-only setup requires just BLE.)
  • Always Connected: Still control your lights locally even if Wi-Fi goes down— with BLE backup when Wi-Fi is off.
  • Automated Lighting: Automate your smart bulb using a schedule, timer, plan, and biorhythm functions in the SmartLife app. Control these E26 bulbs separately or in a group for a customized experience that works for you and your family. Turn the lights on/off, change colors, or dim the lights using the SmartLife app anytime and anywhere.

Compare brightness, white quality, and color

  • Lumens measure light output: Around 800 lumens is a common replacement target for a 60-watt incandescent. For stronger general illumination, look around 1,000 lumens or more, while considering the room, fixture, and beam direction.
  • Kelvins describe white tone: Lower color-temperature values look warmer; higher values look cooler or more daylight-like. A tunable-white range is useful if you want different tones for relaxing and working.
  • CRI describes color rendering: A higher CRI can matter in kitchens, work areas, dressing spaces, or near artwork, where natural-looking colors are useful.
  • RGB describes colored light, not white-light quality: A bulb advertised with millions of colors may be fun for effects, but that claim alone says nothing about its lumen output, CRI, or quality of ordinary white light.

For one historical model-specific example, TP-Link’s KL125 v4 datasheet lists 800 lumens, tunable white from 2,500 to 6,500 K, CRI of at least 90, and app/cloud-only dimming. Those figures apply to that model revision, not to every Kasa bulb. The KL125 datasheet also illustrates why specifications and restrictions should be checked model by model.

Check fixture safety and physical-switch behavior

  • Base and shape: Match the socket and ensure the bulb physically fits the shade, trim, and fixture.
  • Enclosed fixtures and dimmers: Follow the exact bulb’s instructions. Some smart bulbs are not approved for enclosed fixtures or use with a conventional wall dimmer.
  • Sensors and timers: Photosensors, motion sensors, timers, and emergency-lighting circuits may conflict with a smart bulb. The KL125 datasheet lists such restrictions for that model; do not assume they apply identically to all bulbs.
  • Outdoor or damp locations: Use only a model explicitly rated for the location. An indoor bulb should not be used outdoors just because it fits. TP-Link’s support guidance likewise says to use only products rated for outdoor use outside.
  • Wall switch: A smart bulb must remain powered to receive app or voice commands. If someone turns off its physical switch, remote control and schedules stop until power returns.

If a household routinely uses the wall switch, a smart switch may be a better fit. Otherwise, reserve smart bulbs for fixtures whose switches stay on, or make the always-on arrangement clear to everyone using the room.

How to assess a bulb’s reliability claims

“Easy setup” and “reliable connection” are not useful without conditions. Before buying, look for specifics on account requirements, 2.4-GHz pairing, local versus cloud control, behavior after an internet or power interruption, group-control performance, and recovery after a router change. For a large installation, check the router’s device capacity and whether schedules continue without internet access.

When setup fails, confirm the phone and bulb meet the manufacturer’s Wi-Fi requirements, then follow that model’s reset and pairing instructions. After a router or Wi-Fi credential change, the bulb may need new credentials or a reset and re-pairing. Do not rely on a universal power-cycle sequence: reset methods vary by model.

How to use the 2024 winners in a 2026 buying decision

Kasa: consider only after checking the exact model

BGR’s overall winner was Kasa, in part for hub-free setup and value. But the KL125 and KL130 appear on TP-Link’s end-of-life list, and TP-Link’s LB200 page also marks that model end of life. Treat remaining stock as legacy rather than assuming a current support path. TP-Link identifies the Matter-enabled Tapo L535E in its Matter device documentation, but that reference alone does not establish its current price or make it a direct replacement for a discontinued Kasa model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sengled S1: a narrow Alexa-centered option

BGR’s white-bulb pick was the Sengled S1, which it described as inexpensive, easy to set up, and limited to Alexa. That makes it a poor default for a home centered on Apple Home, Google Home, or another platform unless current documentation for the exact package says otherwise. BGR’s reported $19.99 six-pack price dates to its September 2024 article and should not be treated as current.

OREiN: Matter is a starting point, not a feature guarantee

BGR selected OREiN as its Matter pick and reported compatibility claims spanning Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and SmartThings. Confirm the current product’s Matter version, Wi-Fi or Thread transport, controller requirements, and which features work in each platform. Its reported 16 million colors and 25,000-hour life are claims attributed to the product in BGR’s guide, not independently verified performance figures here.

MOES ST64 and Govee BR30: buy for the right fixture

BGR selected the MOES ST64 for decorative Edison-style use and Govee BR30 for floodlight fixtures. For either, confirm the precise model’s current support, output, compatibility, and fixture rating. In particular, do not infer that a BR30 is outdoor-safe or suitable for an enclosed can from its shape or brand alone.

Final checks before ordering

  1. Identify the socket, bulb shape, fixture clearance, and whether the fixture is enclosed or in a damp/outdoor location.
  2. Choose white-only or color-changing light, then compare lumens, color-temperature range, and CRI against the room’s needs.
  3. Confirm explicit support for the household’s platform and check whether the feature set is native, Matter-based, or limited to voice control.
  4. Check the connection requirements: 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth bridge, Zigbee hub, Matter controller, or Thread border router.
  5. Look up the exact model number in current support and end-of-life information; do not rely on a brand-level recommendation or a historical price.
  6. Make sure the physical switch will stay powered and that any existing dimmer, sensor, timer, or fixture restriction is compatible.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
