“Smart Soil” Made Plants Grow 138% Longer in Lab Tests—Not 138% Bigger Crops

A University of Texas hydrogel absorbed atmospheric moisture and released it to plants in lab tests. The 138% result measured stem length, not crop yield.

The research is real, but “138% bigger crops” overstates what it showed. University of Texas at Austin researchers developed a hydrogel that absorbs moisture from humid air and releases it to plants. In controlled experiments, plants in soil amended with the material had stems 138% longer than control plants, and the system saved about 40% of the water used under the study’s test conditions. Those findings do not establish bigger harvests or prove the material is ready for farms or gardens.

What the researchers actually made

“Smart soil” is a media-friendly label, not the formal name of a commercial soil category. The researchers’ material is a self-irrigation and slow-release fertilizer hydrogel, or SISRH, mixed into soil. It is a synthetic polymer network designed to take up atmospheric moisture and release water and nutrients over time. The paper was published in ACS Materials Letters on July 3, 2024; it appeared in the journal’s August 5, 2024 issue, volume 6, issue 8, pages 3471–3477. Read the paper.

The hydrogel combines moisture-attracting polymer chains with a temperature-responsive network. It also contains calcium chloride, which helps the material absorb moisture and provides a source of calcium as the material releases nutrients. The result is better described as hydrogel-amended soil than as ordinary soil permanently transformed into a new kind of soil.

How the day-night water cycle works

  1. At night: Cooler conditions and higher relative humidity allow the material to absorb water vapor from the surrounding air.
  2. During the day: Warming changes the temperature-responsive network’s behavior, allowing stored moisture to be released toward plant roots.
  3. Over time: The material is designed to release nutrients gradually as well as water.

The hydrogel does not create water. It is intended to capture moisture already present in the air, so its usefulness depends on conditions such as nighttime humidity, temperature changes, airflow, soil, crop water demand, and the amount of material used. In very dry air there may be too little atmospheric moisture to capture meaningfully; supplemental irrigation may still be needed.

What “138% bigger” means—and what it does not

The reported 138% increase was in stem length compared with the control—not in harvest size. The University of Texas at Austin describes the result as an increase in plant stem length. See the university announcement.

Claim or measurement What the evidence supports
Plant growth Stems were reported to be 138% longer than those in the control treatment in the experiment.
Harvest or yield A 138% increase in edible crop, fruit, grain, root, or total yield was not established.
Water use About 40% water savings were reported under the study’s experimental conditions; this is not a universal field guarantee.

Stem length is one growth measure. A taller plant does not necessarily produce more edible material, and for some crops extra vegetative growth may not mean a better harvest. Coverage of the study identifies radishes among the plants tested; the university announcement uses the broader term “plants.” Agriculture Dive’s report names radishes.

What the water-saving figure tells you

The approximately 40% saving refers to irrigation water in the researchers’ experimental comparison, not a reduction guaranteed for every field or garden. The result depends on the control treatment and the experiment’s humidity, temperature, soil, and irrigation conditions. The supporting-information listing describes tests using different irrigation intervals and humidity levels, including 3 mL and 6 mL irrigation treatments. The ACS page links to supporting information on the methods and tests.

Secondary reporting describes small soil-and-gel quantities and simulated day-night cycles, with night conditions around 25°C and 60% or 90% relative humidity, and day conditions around 35°C and 30% relative humidity. Those conditions help explain why the result should not be treated as a field-wide promise. Refractor’s account reports these experimental details.

Calcium delivery is not complete fertilization

Calcium chloride serves a dual role in the material: it is hygroscopic, helping attract moisture, and supplies calcium that can be released gradually. That does not make the hydrogel a complete fertilizer. Crops need a balance of nutrients—including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, and micronutrients—that calcium chloride alone does not provide. The university describes the work as focused on calcium-based fertilizer and identifies other fertilizer types as future work. The university announcement explains that scope.

Why this remains a laboratory proof of concept

The reported results come from controlled experiments, not multi-season farm trials. The university identifies longer field tests as a next step. Before growers could judge whether this material is practical, research would need to establish performance across crops, soil types, climates, and real irrigation and rainfall patterns—and measure harvestable yield, not just stem length.

Other unresolved questions matter in the field:

  • Humidity and weather: Low nighttime humidity, little day-night temperature change, heat, or wind could limit water capture or increase crop demand.
  • Soil and crop fit: Drainage, soil texture, root-zone contact, and the crop’s water needs may affect performance. Holding too much water in poorly drained soil could also impair root aeration.
  • Salts and nutrient balance: Calcium chloride adds calcium and chloride. Its longer-term effects on salinity and crop nutrition need assessment, especially in soils already prone to salt accumulation.
  • Material fate: The cited paper and university announcement do not establish how long the synthetic polymer persists in soil or what its breakdown products do.
  • Economics and scale: The reported water saving does not establish manufacturing cost, cost per acre, commercial-scale supply, or profitability.

How it compares with established water-saving methods

The hydrogel offers a distinct approach—capturing water vapor and releasing stored moisture—but the study does not show that it outperforms established farm or garden practices. Options with more familiar roles include:

  • Drip irrigation delivers water near roots and can be predictable where atmospheric humidity is low, but requires equipment, filtration, maintenance, and suitable pressure management.
  • Mulch reduces evaporation at the soil surface and is often accessible, but does not harvest water from the air.
  • Organic-matter and soil-structure management can improve water retention and bring other soil benefits, although changes may take time and vary by soil and climate.
  • Soil-moisture monitoring and irrigation scheduling can help avoid watering when it is not needed, but require monitoring and appropriate calibration.

Conventional water-retaining polymer products should not be assumed to use the SISRH formulation or its atmospheric moisture capture and temperature-responsive release mechanism. Formulations and performance vary.

Can you buy this “smart soil” now?

The cited paper and university announcement describe a research material and do not identify a retail product, supplier, or price. Do not assume that generic hydrogel crystals or soil conditioners are the same formulation. For growers seeking practical water savings now, established methods such as drip irrigation, mulch, moisture monitoring, and soil improvement can be evaluated for the site and crop; the SISRH study does not establish a commercial substitute.
