In 2023, the Oral-B iO Series 7 was the best smart electric toothbrush for most people. It combined useful pressure feedback, accurate app-guided coverage tracking, a built-in display and five brushing modes without reaching the price of the iO Series 9 or Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige.
Smart toothbrushes do not clean teeth by themselves. The motor and brush head do the cleaning; Bluetooth, sensors and apps help you brush for long enough, use appropriate pressure and cover neglected areas. If you already brush twice daily for two minutes with good technique, a basic electric toothbrush may be the better value.

For this guide, a smart toothbrush is an app-connected brush with Bluetooth or another connection to a smartphone. Typical smart functions include:
#1 Best Overall
- VISUALIZED ZONE TRACKING - KNOW EXACTLY WHERE YOU MISSED: G5S's smart display maps your mouth into 6 zones and turns red the moment you skip one - no more guessing, just clear real-time guidance for kids and adults alike. Brush until your screen shows 100% and achieve the thorough clean your dentist actually wants
- DENTIST-RECOMMENDED CLEAN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY: G5S's high-speed sonic motor delivers a deep, effective clean from day one - the kind of thorough clean dentists actually recommend. Soft W-Diamond bristles protect sensitive gums while removing plaque, making it a smart electric toothbrush for adults refining their self-care routine and kids building healthy brushing habits they'll carry for life
- 5 PERSONALIZED MODES + 3-MINUTE SMART TIMER: Choose from WHITENING, FAST, MASSAGE, GENTLE, or BEGINNER mode - whether you're an adult upgrading your self-care routine or a kid learning the right technique. A built-in 3-minute timer meets the dentist-recommended brushing time, while a 30-second pulse guides you zone by zone through all 6 areas of your mouth
- 150-DAY BATTERY LIFE & TRAVEL-READY DESIGN: One charge powers 150 days of brushing - no outlet hunting on business trips, family vacations, or kids' weekend camps. The included travel case keeps your brush protected and hygienic on the go. A waterproof electric toothbrush with long battery life, built for adults and kids to keep up with every schedule, without compromise
- COMPLETE SMART BRUSHING KIT + 2-YEAR SUPPORT: Every G5S ships with 2 Soft W-Diamond Brush Heads, 2 Caps, Travel Case, USB Charging Cable, and full Warranty Guide. Backed by a 1-year warranty with VIP members enjoying an extra year free. A complete electric toothbrush gift set for adults and kids - built to last and backed for the long run
- Tracking brushing duration and frequency
- Saving session history and progress reports
- Detecting excessive pressure
- Estimating which areas of the mouth you have covered
- Providing coaching through the handle, charger or phone
- Offering multiple modes or intensity settings
- Adding reminders, goals, rewards or family accounts
The useful distinction is between feedback that changes behavior and features that merely make a brush look advanced. A two-minute timer, pressure warning and reminder to reach missed areas can be valuable. Badges and artificial-intelligence branding may be less important once the novelty fades.
How to judge a smart toothbrush
Compare more than the number of modes or the manufacturer’s plaque-removal claims. The practical questions are:
- Cleaning mechanism: Oral-B uses a small oscillating-rotating round head, while Sonicare uses a rectangular sonic head.
- Pressure feedback: Does the brush simply warn you when you press too hard, or does it show a useful pressure range?
- Coverage tracking: Does it only record that a session occurred, or does it estimate mouth position and missed zones?
- Phone dependence: Can you brush normally without a phone nearby, and which features require live app guidance?
- On-handle controls: Look for a timer, mode selection, display and pressure indication.
- Ownership cost: Include replacement heads, subscriptions, charging accessories and proprietary refills.
- Comfort: Noise, vibration, head shape and sensitivity matter more than a long specification list.
- Household use: Families need reliable profile support; many advanced brushes are effectively designed for one user.
Best overall: Oral-B iO Series 7
The Oral-B iO Series 7 was the strongest all-round smart toothbrush in the 2023 comparison. At approximately $200, it offered most of the coaching that made the iO range interesting without the iO Series 9’s roughly $100 premium.
What it does
- An internal gyroscope and accelerometer help detect mouth position.
- The app displays three-dimensional coverage guidance so you can see which areas need attention.
- Five modes include Daily Clean, Sensitive and Gum Health.
- A built-in display provides status information and helps reduce dependence on the phone.
- Haptic quadrant prompts help pace your brushing.
- The pressure ring indicates when pressure is excessive or appropriate.
- After synchronization, the app can record unguided sessions, so you do not need to keep the phone beside you every time.
The iO 7’s advantage was balance. It gave users meaningful feedback about time, pressure and coverage while retaining a relatively straightforward daily routine. It was especially well suited to adults who stopped brushing early, pressed too hard or repeatedly missed the same areas.
What the iO 7 cannot do
Coverage tracking is an estimate based on sensor data, not a clinical inspection of every tooth surface. A green pressure indicator also does not prove that your technique is complete. The app is most useful as a prompt and training aid, not as a diagnosis.
The round head can feel precise around individual teeth, but people who prefer a traditional rectangular brush head may find the Sonicare approach more familiar. Replacement heads are also an ongoing cost, and Oral-B iO handles accept iO replacement heads rather than standard Oral-B heads.
Who should buy it?
Choose the iO 7 if you want the most complete smart experience among the 2023 recommendations, value on-handle feedback and are willing to use an app occasionally. Skip it if you already brush consistently and correctly, dislike app tracking or want inexpensive, widely interchangeable replacement heads.

Best budget and family option: Quip Smart Electric Toothbrush
The Quip Smart Electric Toothbrush took a different approach. Its 2023 price was approximately $50 with a brush-head subscription or $55 without one. It was not the most technically sophisticated brush, but it made brushing more engaging through progress tracking, awards, rewards and family support.
Why it stood out
- A two-minute timer and 30-second quadrant prompts support basic brushing habits.
- The app records progress and brushing history.
- Gamified awards and real-world rewards can motivate reluctant users.
- Multiple brushes can be paired with one account, making it useful for families.
Quip was best for motivation rather than maximum sensor precision. Its vibration was less intense than premium Oral-B and Philips models, and its position sensing was less advanced. That can be an advantage for users who dislike aggressive vibration, but a disadvantage for shoppers specifically seeking detailed coverage coaching.
Subscription trade-off
The lower entry price should not obscure the recurring cost. A subscription may make replacement heads convenient, but it also creates an ongoing commitment. Compare the total cost over a year, including refills, rather than comparing only the handle price.
Best premium option: Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9900 Prestige
The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9900 Prestige was the premium alternative, priced at approximately $380 in the 2023 coverage. It suited buyers who preferred a polished design, a rectangular sonic head and detailed app feedback.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStrengths
- Premium construction and travel accessories
- A slim-neck brush head that many users may find comfortable
- Pressure tracking and coverage feedback
- Five modes and three intensity levels, creating 15 combinations
- Brushing data that can synchronize automatically even when the app is not open during brushing
- A replacement-head reminder
- Approximately two weeks of claimed battery life
Philips currently lists up to 62,000 brush movements per minute for the 9900 Prestige and describes real-time coaching, personalized guidance and a 14-day battery claim on its official product page. Those are manufacturer specifications and claims, not a guarantee that every user will get a better result.
Limitations
The 9900 Prestige was expensive compared with a basic electric toothbrush, and its vibration could feel intense at higher settings. Changing modes may require the smartphone app, which is inconvenient if you want the handle to function as a completely self-contained device.
Independent specialist testing also found that Philips’ coverage system tracked approximately 12 areas compared with about 16 for the Oral-B system tested. These are app-tracked zones, not clinically examined individual teeth. The brush is designed around one user, so sharing a handle can make the data unreliable.

|---|---|---|
| 2023 positioning | Best overall | Feature-rich upgrade |
| Modes | Five | Seven |
| Display | Built-in display | Full-color display |
| Tracking | App-guided coverage tracking | More elaborate app-guided visualization |
| Travel charging | Less premium travel arrangement | Charging travel case |
| Price difference | About $200 | About $100 more |
The iO 9 added a full-color display, two additional modes, more elaborate visualization and a charging travel case. Current official product information also lists seven modes, interactive display, AI/3D tracking, pressure sensing and magnetic charging. Those current specifications should not be confused with the historical 2023 price comparison.
For most users, the iO 9 did not deliver a fundamentally different cleaning or coaching experience. Buy it if the extra modes, color display and charging case matter to you. Otherwise, the iO 7 provided the better value.
Round Oral-B or rectangular Sonicare?
Neither shape is universally best. Oral-B’s small round head can feel precise around individual teeth and along the gumline. Sonicare’s rectangular head may feel more familiar to someone moving from a manual toothbrush and can seem gentler in ordinary use, although its highest vibration setting can still surprise new users.
Choose based on comfort, gum sensitivity, tooth shape, braces, dexterity and technique. Start at a lower intensity if vibration causes discomfort. People with orthodontic appliances, implants, gum disease or recent dental treatment should follow their dental professional’s advice rather than choosing solely by app features.

Do you need your phone beside you?
Smart brushes have three different levels of phone dependence:
- Basic brushing: Timers and pressure warnings are generally available directly from the handle.
- Post-session history: Many brushes can save data and synchronize it later.
- Live coverage coaching: Detailed position guidance commonly requires the app nearby, unless the handle or charger provides that feedback.
This distinction matters because app-guided brushing can become an extra chore. The 2023 coverage found that the novelty of the app could wear off, while the timer and immediate pressure feedback remained useful.

- #1 Dentist recommended oral b io: This Oral-B Braun electric toothbrush removes up to 100 %* more plaque in just 1 week; these bristles are clinically proven to remove up to 2.5x more along your sensitive gumline vs manual brush
- Intelligent gum protection: Achieve healthier gums in just 1 week; the smart iO sensor alerts you if you press too hard, ensuring optimal pressure to protect sensitive gums and enamel; compatible with oral b io replacement round brush heads
- Real-time Brushing Guidance: Utilize the Oral-B app's AI-powered tracking to map your brushing habits in real-time; ensures you never miss a spot; achieve a deep clean across teeth, tongue and cheeks with our premium electric toothbrushes
- Smart Timer and Effortless Maintenance: The iO Light Ring Timer keeps the dentist recommended two-minutes brushing time; refill change alert indicates when to replace your brush head every 3 months**; switch carefree with a 30-day guarantee
- Personalized Smart Brushing: Elevate your oral care with five dynamic cleaning modes, from sensitive to intense whitening, and a smart visual pressure sensor that protects your gums; promotes thorough cleaning, unlike one-speed standard brushes
A later product illustrates the difference: the current Oral-B iO Series 10 uses an iO Sense smart charger to provide real-time coverage, time and pressure guidance without opening the app. That is a later/current distinction, not a feature to attribute to the 2023 iO 7 or iO 9.
Who should buy a smart toothbrush?
Smart features are most likely to justify their cost if you:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Frequently brush for less than two minutes
- Press too hard or need pressure feedback
- Miss particular areas of your mouth
- Need reminders or measurable progress
- Respond well to rewards and goals
- Want a parent-friendly way to encourage a child’s routine
A simpler electric toothbrush is probably better if you already brush twice daily for two minutes, use appropriate pressure, cover all areas and do not want phone tracking, subscriptions or expensive proprietary heads.
Ownership and maintenance
The handle is only the first cost. Before buying, check:
- Replacement-head price and availability
- Whether heads are proprietary
- Subscription terms and cancellation options
- Included charging stand or travel case
- Warranty and retailer return policy in your country
- Battery claims under the brushing schedule you actually use
Oral-B advises replacing iO heads every three months and states that iO handles are compatible only with iO heads. Philips likewise describes approximately three months as the normal replacement interval and uses usage and pressure data for its replacement reminder.
For daily care, brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled head. Replace the head about every three months or sooner when the bristles are worn. Rinse the head, keep the handle clean around the connection point and reduce intensity if the vibration is uncomfortable.
The 2023 verdict
Most readers should choose the Oral-B iO Series 7. It offered the best balance of useful coaching, coverage tracking, pressure feedback and price in the 2023 comparison.
Choose the Quip Smart for lower-cost motivation and family tracking. Choose the Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige for a premium sonic design and detailed app experience. Choose the Oral-B iO Series 9 only if its color display, extra modes and charging travel case justify the premium for you.
Everyone else should consider a simpler electric toothbrush. Smart technology is valuable when it changes brushing behavior—not simply because it adds another app.
