There is no single Google Nest reset procedure. The correct steps depend on whether you have a speaker, display, camera, doorbell, thermostat or Wi-Fi device. Restart the device first whenever possible; use a factory reset only when you need to erase its configuration, transfer ownership or recover from a persistent fault.

Choose the right type of reset

Problem Best first action What happens
Device is frozen or responding incorrectly Restart Power-cycles the device without normally deleting settings
Wi-Fi password or network changed Forget Wi-Fi and reconnect Removes the saved network where supported
You are selling, giving away or inheriting the device Remove it from the app and factory-reset it Clears local configuration and prepares setup for another account
Persistent setup or software failure Factory reset Erases settings and requires setup again

A factory reset is destructive. For Nest cameras and doorbells, save any important clips, snapshots and timelapses first: Google says a factory reset deletes video history and snapshots, and deleted footage cannot be recovered. See Google’s camera and doorbell reset instructions.

Before you reset

  • Confirm the exact model and physical location. Do not press a reset button just to identify a device.
  • Try a restart before a factory reset.
  • Record schedules, routines, HVAC settings, custom Wi-Fi settings and other information you will need to recreate.
  • Make sure you can access the Google account used for setup.
  • Have the intended Wi-Fi name and password ready.
  • For cameras and doorbells, export footage you want to keep.
  • If transferring ownership, remove the device from Google Home or Nest as well as resetting the hardware.

Restart a Google Nest speaker or display

A restart is usually the safest first step. Unplug the device, leave it disconnected for one minute, plug it back in and wait for startup to finish.

You can also restart many speakers and displays in Google Home:

  1. Open Google Home.
  2. Tap Home, then All devices.
  3. Touch and hold the device tile.
  4. Tap Settings, then More.
  5. Tap Reboot.

This is different from a factory reset. Google’s distinction is explained in its reboot guidance.

Factory-reset Google Nest speakers and displays

Google uses different controls for different products. The approximate timings below are model-specific; wait for the confirmation sound, message or light sequence before releasing the control.

Google Home speaker

  1. Switch the microphone off using the physical microphone switch. The lights should turn orange.
  2. Press and hold the top center of the speaker.
  3. After about five seconds, the reset begins. Continue holding for about 10 more seconds until the device confirms the reset.

Google Home display

  1. Find the physical microphone mute button on the back.
  2. Press and hold it for about 15 seconds until the display confirms the reset.

Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max

  1. Press and hold both physical volume buttons at the same time.
  2. Continue for about 10 seconds.
  3. Release when the device confirms it is resetting.

If Sleep Sensing is enabled, review any sleep data and deletion settings before resetting. For the complete model-specific list, use Google’s speaker and display reset guide.

Reconnect a speaker or display after resetting

  1. Open Google Home.
  2. Tap Add, then Device.
  3. Follow the setup prompts.
  4. Choose the correct home and room and connect the device to Wi-Fi.
  5. Reconfigure Voice Match, routines, alarms, media services and preferred music providers.

Change Wi-Fi without factory-resetting a speaker or display

If the device is still visible and responsive in Google Home, a full reset may not be necessary:

  1. Touch and hold the device tile in Google Home.
  2. Tap Settings, then Device information.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi, then Forget This network.
  4. Return to the Google Home home screen and run setup again on the new network.

Nest speakers and displays generally remember one Wi-Fi network at a time. If a replacement router uses the same network name and password, some devices may reconnect automatically; test them before resetting. See Google’s Wi-Fi guidance.

Reset Nest cameras

Newer Nest Cam wired and battery models

For supported newer cameras, remove the camera from Google Home first, then reset the powered hardware:

  2. Select the camera, tap More, then Settings.
  3. Tap Remove device and confirm.
  4. With the camera powered, locate and hold its physical reset button.
  5. At about 10 seconds, the status light may blink yellow four times and play a countdown tone.
  6. At about 12 seconds, the light should become solid yellow and the camera should confirm the reset. Release the button.

The camera may continue to appear Offline in the app until it is removed. That does not necessarily mean the hardware reset failed.

Older Nest Cam Indoor and Outdoor

Some older models have no factory-reset button. In the Nest app, select the camera, open Settings, tap Remove device and confirm. Do not assume every Nest Cam can be reset with a pinhole.

Nest Cam IQ

  1. Make sure the camera is plugged in.
  2. For Nest Cam IQ Outdoor, find the reset button on the front below the Nest logo. For IQ Indoor, find it beneath the camera stand.
  3. Press and hold the button with a paperclip or thumbtack.
  4. Release when the light ring begins spinning blue.
  5. Wait for the confirmation chime and slowly pulsing blue light.
  6. Remove the camera from the Nest app if it still appears offline.

Google’s camera reset documentation lists the controls for each generation.

Reset a Nest Doorbell

Nest Doorbell battery, wired 2nd generation and wired 3rd generation

  1. Find the reset pinhole on the back. On the battery model it is below the USB port; newer wired models place it near the QR code.
  2. Insert a paperclip, thumbtack or appropriate release tool and hold the button.
  3. At about 10 seconds, the light should blink yellow four times and a countdown tone may sound.
  4. At about 12 seconds, the light should become solid yellow and the doorbell should confirm the reset.
  5. Release the button.
  6. Remove the doorbell from Google Home through Home → Cameras → device → More → Settings → Remove device.

Older wired Nest Doorbell

  1. Insert the release tool into the hole at the bottom and remove the doorbell from its base.
  2. Do not pull, disconnect or unscrew the attached wires.
  3. Hold the reset pin on the back and the large doorbell button on the front together for about 10 seconds.
  4. Release when the chime and light sequence confirm the reset.
  5. Remove it from the Google Home or Nest app.

Save footage before resetting. A factory reset can permanently delete the doorbell’s video history and snapshots.

Set up a camera or doorbell again

Add the device in the app used by that model, scan its QR code or enter the setup code, connect Wi-Fi, then recreate names, notifications, activity zones, familiar-face settings and recording preferences. Test live view and notifications.

Reset a Nest thermostat

Thermostat controls and setup apps vary by generation. A reset does not repair incorrect wiring, blown HVAC fuses, incompatible systems, power problems or a disconnected Heat Link.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Nest Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat 4th generation

These models use Google Home. On the thermostat, open the menu and choose Settings → Reset. Select the full factory-reset or all-settings option—not only Wi-Fi, schedule or account reset—and confirm. The precise control method and wording differ between the touchbar Nest Thermostat and dial-operated 4th-generation Learning Thermostat, so verify the model before proceeding. Add the thermostat again in Google Home.

Nest Thermostat E and Learning Thermostat 3rd generation or earlier

These models use the Nest app after reset. Open the thermostat’s Quick View menu and choose Settings → Reset. Select the factory-default or all-settings option and confirm. Do not confuse this with resetting only the network, schedule, Home/Away settings or account connection.

Record schedules and temperature preferences first. After setup, enter the HVAC configuration carefully and confirm heating and cooling operation before leaving the system unattended. European installations using a Heat Link may require a separate restart, reset or re-pairing procedure; consult Google’s Heat Link instructions.

Factory-reset Google Wifi, Nest Wifi and Nest Wifi Pro

A Wi-Fi factory reset interrupts internet access, erases network settings and requires the network to be configured again. Before starting, record the network name and password, custom DNS settings, port-forwarding rules, reserved IP addresses and other custom settings.

Nest Wifi Pro

  1. Find the reset button on the bottom.
  2. Hold it for about 12 seconds.
  3. Release when the light becomes solid yellow after flashing yellow.
  4. Wait up to five minutes. Do not unplug the device.
  5. A flashing white followed by blue light indicates readiness for setup.

Nest Wifi router

  1. Find the reset button on the bottom.
  2. Hold it for about 10 seconds.
  3. Release when the light becomes solid yellow.
  4. Wait up to 10 minutes and do not remove power.
  5. A pulsing white light indicates readiness for setup.

Google Wifi models have generation-specific procedures. Use Google’s Google Wifi and Nest Wifi reset guide rather than applying a Nest Wifi button sequence to every unit. Afterward, recreate the network, re-add points, restore custom settings and test internet access from several rooms.

A hardware reset clears local settings, but it does not necessarily delete every item Google may already have collected or analyzed for cloud services.

Resetting for a move, sale or new owner

  1. Save camera and doorbell footage.
  2. Remove the device from the previous owner’s Google Home or Nest account when possible.
  3. Factory-reset the hardware using the model-specific instructions above.
  4. Set it up under the new owner’s Google account, home and Wi-Fi network.
  5. Test the device and recreate permissions, routines, notifications and schedules.

If you inherited a device from a previous resident, ask the former owner to remove it first. If that is impossible, factory-reset it and try setup again. Google’s moving and previous-owner guidance covers this situation.

When a reset does not work

The reset button appears ineffective

Check that the device is powered, the model is correct and the button is being held for the required approximate time. You may be pressing a release or pairing control instead of reset, or releasing before the confirmation signal. Identify the device by its app name, physical location, serial number or QR code and follow the matching Google instructions.

The device remains offline

Wait for the physical reset to finish, remove the device from Google Home or Nest, close and reopen the app, then add it again. Cameras and doorbells can remain listed as Offline until app removal.

Google Home cannot find the device

  • Confirm the phone uses the intended Wi-Fi network.
  • Enable Bluetooth and local-network permissions for the Google Home app.
  • Restart the phone, router and Nest device.
  • Keep the device near the router during setup.
  • Check the Wi-Fi password, QR code and setup code.
  • Check whether the device remains attached to another account.
  • Look for router isolation, incompatible security settings or a captive portal.

The thermostat is stuck after reset

Check that its display is seated correctly on the base and follow the model-specific restart guidance. A factory reset will not correct an HVAC wiring or power fault. See Google’s thermostat startup troubleshooting.

Quick reference

Device Typical physical control Approximate timing Setup afterward
Google Home speaker Top center, with microphone switched off About 5 seconds, then about 10 more Google Home
Nest Hub or Hub Max Both volume buttons About 10 seconds Google Home
Newer Nest Cam Physical reset button About 10–12 seconds Google Home

Nest Wifi Bottom reset button About 10 seconds; completion may take up to 10 minutes Google Home

The Bottom Line

Restart first, identify the exact model, and factory-reset only when necessary. The most important exceptions are cameras and doorbells—save footage before resetting—and thermostats and Wi-Fi equipment, which require careful reconfiguration afterward.
