Yes—you can make a working projector at home with a shoebox, a smartphone, and a convex magnifying lens. The result is a genuine optical projection: the phone supplies the image and light, while the lens enlarges it onto a wall. It works best as a science experiment, craft project, or occasional novelty setup in a very dark room—not as a replacement for a commercial home-theater projector.
What you will make
This project uses a cardboard enclosure, a convex magnifying lens, and a movable phone holder. The lens is mounted in one short end of the box. The phone sits inside the box, upside down, with its screen facing the lens. Sliding the phone forward or backward changes the focus.

A simple layout looks like this:
Phone screen → movable holder → convex lens → wall or screen
The box blocks stray light, the lens forms the image, and the wall acts as the projection surface.

Materials and tools
Essential materials
- Rigid shoebox or similarly sturdy cardboard box
- Smartphone
- Large, clear convex magnifying glass
- Cardboard scraps for a phone cradle or sliding platform
- Pencil or marker
- Ruler
- Scissors or craft knife
- Masking tape, duct tape, or strong parcel tape
- Removable mounting putty such as Blu Tack, or glue for final fixing
Optional materials
- Matte black paper or water-based black paint
- Extra cardboard for reinforcing the box
- Rubber band or a carefully sealed cable opening for charging
- Soft lens cloth
The lens must be convex: it should be thicker in the middle than at the edge. A large lens with a clear central area is generally easier to use than a tiny reading lens. Avoid cracked, heavily scratched, warped, or strongly tinted lenses. The printed magnification rating—such as 3× or 5×—does not by itself tell you whether the lens will be suitable, because focal length, aperture, and optical quality also matter.

Safety first
- Put a cutting mat or thick scrap cardboard beneath the box.
- Cut away from your hands and body.
- Children should have adult supervision when using craft knives, hacksaws, or hot glue.
- If removing a magnifying-glass handle, secure the lens before cutting it.
- Do not put a high-power LED, lamp, or other hot light source inside a cardboard box without proper thermal control.
- Do not look directly into a bright lamp, LED, or concentrated optical beam.
- Let paint and glue dry completely before placing the phone inside.
- Keep the phone’s ventilation openings clear and do not trap a charging cable in a way that strains the connector.
The phone-and-lens design does not need a powerful lamp. Its main limitation is the small amount of light produced by the phone screen, not a missing light source.
How the homemade projector works
The phone screen emits light carrying the picture. A convex lens bends that light and forms a real image on the wall. Because of the way a convex lens forms a real image, the projected picture is inverted. That is why the phone normally needs to be placed upside down.
Focus depends mainly on the distance between the phone screen and the lens. The box-to-wall distance changes the image size, while moving the phone inside the box provides the fine-focus adjustment.
For readers who want the optical explanation, the thin-lens relationship is:
1/f = 1/do + 1/di
- f is the lens focal length.
- do is the distance from the lens to the phone screen.
- di is the distance from the lens to the wall.
Household magnifying glasses rarely provide precise optical specifications, so this equation is best used to understand why adjustment is necessary—not to promise an exact box dimension. A box approximately 25–35 cm long can be a useful starting range, but the correct length depends on the particular lens.
Making the image larger also makes it dimmer. The phone produces roughly the same available light, but that light is spread across a larger projected area. A matte black interior reduces reflections and can improve perceived contrast; it does not make the phone screen itself brighter.

Step-by-step: build the shoebox projector
1. Prepare the box
Choose a rigid shoebox with enough depth for the phone holder to slide. Remove loose inserts and reinforce weak corners or flexible panels with tape. Do not assume that one box size works for every lens. You need enough room to move the phone while focusing.

Place the magnifying lens against the centre of one short end of the box and trace around it. Draw the actual cutting line slightly inside the traced edge if the lens is meant to fit snugly. Check that the lid can still open and close.
A close-fitting opening is preferable to a large gap, because gaps allow stray light into the box and reduce contrast.
3. Cut the opening
Cut the circle carefully with a craft knife or scissors. It is safer to start slightly undersized and enlarge the opening gradually than to cut away too much cardboard. If the cardboard begins to tear, reinforce the area with tape and continue slowly.
4. Mount the lens
Seat the lens flat in the opening. Hold it temporarily with tape or removable putty, then check that it is centred and perpendicular to the box. Add tape around the perimeter to block light.
A cardboard retaining ring can make the lens more secure. Avoid permanently gluing it until you have tested the alignment and focus.

5. Darken the interior
Paint the inside matte black or line it with matte black paper. Allow paint to dry completely before continuing. The dark interior absorbs stray reflections from the cardboard and helps the projected image look less washed out.
6. Build a sliding phone holder
Make a platform from cardboard, or place a smaller cardboard box inside the shoebox as a movable cradle. The holder should:
- Keep the phone screen facing the lens.
- Keep the phone centred with the lens.
- Keep the screen approximately parallel to the lens.
- Slide forward and backward for focus.
- Prevent the phone from falling against the lens.
Side rails, folded cardboard tabs, or removable putty can stop the phone from shifting. A rigid holder is important: a flexible or tilted phone can cause blur and distortion.
Recommended Free Tools
7. Configure the phone
- Set the screen brightness to maximum for testing.
- Disable automatic brightness if the phone keeps dimming the display.
- Lock the screen orientation.
- Turn the phone upside down so the projected image appears upright.
- Remove a thick case if it prevents the phone from sitting securely or centred.
- Keep the display awake while you focus.
Maximum brightness improves visibility but uses more battery and may create heat. If you need to charge the phone, route the cable through a small opening and seal around it without covering ventilation areas.
8. Seal light leaks
Close the box and inspect the lens edge, lid seam, and cable opening. Cover unnecessary gaps with opaque tape. Do not seal the phone inside an airtight, heat-trapping enclosure.
9. Set up the wall or screen
Use a pale, matte wall or sheet. A glossy surface creates reflections, while a coloured wall changes the image colour. Darken the room as much as possible.

Focus range from 1.5m to infinity, with a 8°‑52° field of view. Comes with a cleaning cloth and travel pouch.
How to focus and set the image size
- Place the box close to the wall and point the lens squarely at it.
- Set the phone to maximum brightness and display a high-contrast image.
- Move the phone slowly forward and backward inside the box until the image becomes sharp.
- Move the entire box away from the wall to enlarge the picture.
- If the enlarged image becomes too dim, move the box closer again.
- Recheck that the phone and lens are centred, parallel, and secure.
Do not use the box-to-wall distance as the main focus control. Moving the box changes both the image size and the lens-to-wall distance; moving the phone provides the more useful fine adjustment.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Image is upside down | Normal convex-lens inversion | Turn the phone 180 degrees, lock its orientation, or rotate the content in an app or video editor. |
| Image is blurry everywhere | Incorrect phone distance, tilted lens, poor alignment, dirty lens, or flexible box | Move the phone in small increments, centre it, seat the lens flat, clean the lens with a soft cloth, and reinforce the box. |
| Centre is sharp but edges are blurry | Lens aberration, tilt, off-centre alignment, or an image that is too large | Reduce the image size, improve alignment, stiffen the holder, or try another lens. An inexpensive single lens may never be sharp edge to edge. |
| Image is too dim | Large image, ambient light, weak phone display, or inefficient lens | Darken the room, move closer to the wall, reduce image size, maximise brightness, seal light leaks, and try a larger clear-aperture lens. |
| Image looks grey or washed out | Reflective interior, light leaks, bright room, or unsuitable wall | Use matte black lining, seal gaps, darken the room, and project onto a pale matte surface. |
| Image is trapezoidal | Projector or phone is tilted relative to the wall | Place the lens plane parallel to the wall and keep the phone holder perpendicular to the box base. |
| Phone rotates the wrong way | Automatic screen rotation | Lock orientation before inserting the phone, or rotate the media itself. |
| Phone becomes hot or dims | Maximum brightness, long operation, charging, a restrictive case, or poor ventilation | Use shorter sessions, remove the case, leave safe ventilation, avoid unnecessary charging, and stop if the phone becomes unusually hot. |
| Lens wobbles | Opening is too large or mounting is weak | Add a cardboard retaining ring, tape the perimeter, and test alignment before permanent gluing. |
What to realistically expect
The build can project recognisable photographs, cartoons, slides, and simple video demonstrations. It is most usable in near-darkness and at a modest image size. Small text, detailed presentations, gaming, daytime viewing, and large audiences are poor matches for this design.
It will not provide the brightness, contrast, resolution, speakers, focus convenience, or reliability of a commercial projector. “Projects an image” is an accurate promise; “creates a cinema-quality home theatre” is not.
| Homemade phone projector | Commercial projector |
|---|---|
| Very low material cost if you already have a phone and lens | Higher purchase cost |
| Educational and fun to build | Designed for repeated use |
| Needs a very dark room | Usually more usable in moderate light |
| Manual focus and alignment | Built-in focus and adjustment systems |
| Dim phone-screen source and variable edge sharpness | Purpose-built light engine and more consistent optics |
| Phone content only | Inputs and features vary by model, including HDMI, wireless, USB, or built-in apps |
Is this projector worth making?
Yes, if you want a low-cost physics demonstration, a construction activity, a craft project, or a temporary novelty setup.
No, if you want dependable movie nights, daytime viewing, gaming, readable presentations, outdoor use, or a large bright picture.

When a commercial projector is the better construction choice
A used or refurbished commercial projector is usually a better low-cost solution when the purpose is actual viewing rather than experimentation. It provides a designed light source, stable optics, focus controls, and input connections. A new portable projector can also be worthwhile when convenience matters more than the lowest price.
As of the price signals supplied for August 18, 2026, examples included:
- Epson EpiqVision Flex CO-W01: listed by Epson at a $399.99 regular price and a $329.99 promotional price during the cited check; WXGA resolution and 3,000-lumen colour/white brightness were listed. Prices and availability change.
- Epson EpiqVision Flex CO-FH02: a Full HD 1080p portable model shown at $499.99 on Epson’s buying page during the cited check, with retailer prices varying.
- XGIMI Halo+ (New): listed at $499 with 1080p resolution, 700 ISO lumens, a built-in battery, and approximately 2.5 hours of playtime.
- XGIMI portable models: the cited page showed the MoGo 4 at $399 and MoGo 4 Laser at $599.
- Certified-refurbished XGIMI models: the cited page showed a MoGo 2 at $159 and MoGo 2 Pro at $254.99, subject to inventory, condition, warranty, and price changes.
These are price signals, not permanent offers or a universal “best projector” ranking. Brightness specifications also need careful comparison: ISO lumens and manufacturer-reported colour or white brightness are not automatically interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy not simply add a brighter lamp?
A brighter LED-based projector is not a simple upgrade to the shoebox design. It needs a suitable LED, heat sink, diffuser or condenser optics, image-forming display, projection lens, alignment, enclosure ventilation, and electrical safety measures. A high-power lamp inside cardboard can create a fire and heat hazard.
For a beginner, the phone-and-lens build is the sensible boundary. Build it to understand convex lenses and image formation; choose a commercial projector when you need useful brightness and repeatable results.
