There is no single pizza cutter style that suits every pie or kitchen. A handled wheel rolls through familiar, compact cuts; a rocker blade presses down across a wider section; and pizza scissors shear slices while helping protect a pan. The right choice depends on crust thickness, toppings, cutting surface, grip, cleanup and safe storage—not a universal “best” label.

How to choose a pizza cutter
Start with the way you prefer to cut. Wheels roll, rockers press down, and scissors shear. Then consider whether the tool suits your usual crust and toppings, whether you can see and control the blade, what surface you cut on, and how the cutter stores and cleans.
- Crust and toppings: A thin, lightly topped pizza may need less force than a thick or heavily loaded pie. America’s Test Kitchen compared cutters across thin-crust pizza, one-inch Sicilian crust, two-inch Chicago deep-dish, heavy wet toppings and pepperoni, and reported different strengths and weaknesses across conditions.
- Grip and visibility: A handle and visible wheel can make it easier to guide a rolling cut. In America’s Test Kitchen’s report, ergonomics and hand strength were part of the discussion: Jack Dennerlein, professor of ergonomics and safety at Northeastern and Harvard Universities, explained that “The muscles that flex fingers to hold a handle are bigger, hence stronger,” adding, “So the traditional handled cutter is much stronger.” His comments were made in the context of testers finding a palm-held enclosed wheel weaker to use than a handled cutter.
- Cutting surface: If you cut directly in a non-stick pan, look for a design intended to protect the surface. Dreamfarm says Scizza’s nylon shoe slides under pizza and protects non-stick pans; that is a manufacturer claim.
- Cleaning and storage: Check the exact model’s care instructions and how its blade is covered or stored. Dishwasher-safe claims vary by product, and an exposed sharp edge may need more deliberate storage.

America’s Test Kitchen: Mercer Culinary Millennia, 2023
In its report dated August 31, 2023, America’s Test Kitchen says it began with more than a dozen cutters, selected six finalists and tested those finalists on thin-crust pizza, one-inch Sicilian crust, two-inch Chicago deep-dish, heavy wet toppings and pepperoni. It named the Mercer Culinary Millennia Pizza Cutter 4-inch its winner, citing its sharp wheel, tall visibility, textured grip, versatility and easy handwashing. Parade: OXO Good Grips 4-inch Pizza Wheel, 2026
In a review published April 11, 2026, Theresa Greco says she tested 12 popular cutters during family pizza nights, assessing one-pass cutting, comfort and cleanup. Parade names the OXO Good Grips 4-inch Pizza Wheel its overall pick and identifies the Williams Sonoma Olivewood Pizza Chopper as a rocker. BBC Good Food: UK models and buying factors, 2026
BBC Good Food’s June 1, 2026 roundup considers compact size, blade safety, comfortable shape, cleaning and price, and describes the Gozney rocker and Joseph Joseph Disc among its reviewed models. Its OXO description is for a 10 cm wheel with a plastic blade; do not combine those details with Parade’s four-inch stainless-wheel description without confirming the precise market SKU. Care, storage and safe handling
“Dishwasher-safe” is model-specific, not a property of a cutter style. America’s Test Kitchen says its Mercer winner is not dishwasher-safe, while Dreamfarm and Weber describe their cited models as dishwasher-safe. BBC Good Food says the Joseph Joseph Disc can be hand-washed or put in a dishwasher. Check the product instructions for the exact version you own.
Plan where the blade will go between uses. BBC Good Food notes that the reviewed Gozney rocker has no protective cover, whereas the Joseph Joseph Disc has a silicone strip to cover its blade for drawer storage. Dreamfarm advises careful handling of Scizza’s sharp blades and keeping it away from children.
