Automatic jar openers can help if gripping and twisting a sealed lid is difficult: a battery-powered device sits on the jar and loosens the lid when activated. It still needs to be positioned, and no one type of opener works best for everyone; compare how much grip and twisting remain, how steady the jar needs to be, and whether the user can operate and store the tool comfortably.
How automatic jar openers work
A battery-powered hands-free opener is placed over a jar and activated with a button. It takes over some of the motion needed to loosen the lid, reducing the need for direct twisting. The user still needs to position the jar and device, and may need to handle the loosened lid afterward.
Sealed jars can be difficult to open because a lid may need substantial initial torque to break its vacuum seal. Grip span and friction matter, too: a wide or slippery container can be hard to hold securely. The Arthritis Foundation’s Optimum Jar Design Guidelines describes these challenges and recommends considering grip and opening torque.
Compare jar-opening options
There is no universal winner. Think about the hand movement each option still requires, whether the jar stays stable, and whether the intended user can set up and use the tool comfortably.

- ELECTRIC JAR OPENER FOR WEAK HANDS, SENIORS & ARTHRITIS โ The Robotwist Deluxe is a fully automatic, hands-free electric jar opener designed for anyone who struggles to twist off tight lids. Just set it on the jar, press one button, and it grips and opens the lid for you โ no strength, no straining, no twisting.
- HIGHER TORQUE OPENS THE TIGHTEST, TOUGHEST LIDS โ This Deluxe 7321 model delivers upgraded torque over the original Robo Twist, powering off vacuum-sealed and stubborn lids that manual grippers and rubber pads can't budge. If a lid won't move by hand, Robotwist does the work instead of you.
- UNIVERSAL ADJUSTABLE FIT FOR SMALL & LARGE JARS โ Two self-adjusting no-slip vice grips automatically clamp to lids from 1.2 to 3.5 inches in diameter, so one device handles everything from small spice jars to big pickle and sauce jars. No settings to change and no attachments to swap โ it sizes itself to each jar.
- TRUE HANDS-FREE AUTOMATIC OPERATION โ Unlike squeeze grippers that still need hand strength, Robotwist does the gripping and turning for you. Place it, press the button, and it holds the jar steady and spins the lid off on its own โ ideal for one-handed use or anyone recovering from surgery or injury.
- CORDLESS & BATTERY OPERATED โ USE IT ANYWHERE โ Runs on 2 AA batteries (not included), so there are no cords and no outlet needed. Keep it on the counter, in a drawer, or take it anywhere in the kitchen.
| Option | What it does | Questions to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Battery-powered automatic opener | Sits on the jar and loosens the lid when activated with a button. | Can the user place and remove it? Are the controls clear? Check the current product’s claimed jar compatibility, cleaning instructions, and storage needs. |
| Rubber grip or non-slip mat | Adds traction to the lid or helps keep the jar from moving. | Can the user still twist with the added grip? Is it easy to grasp and wash? |
| Jar key | Helps break the vacuum seal so the lid may take less effort to twist. | Can the user position and operate the lever? Is some twisting still manageable? |
| Fixed or mounted opener | Uses a stationary opener against which the jar or lid is held. | Can the user bring the jar to the fixed location and operate it safely? Is installation acceptable? |
Arthritis Society Canada describes battery-powered hands-free openers, jar keys, and non-slip mats as different ways to approach the task. The Arthritis Foundation also recommends considering fixed or rubber jar openers. Choose based on the user’s abilities and routine, not on an assumption that one tool suits every jar or household.
What to look for when choosing
Accessibility guidance from the Arthritis Foundation emphasizes practical qualities such as simple operation, comfortable grip, low maintenance, and light weight. Use those principles to assess both the tool and the task of using it.

What the evidence saysโand does not say
The Arthritis Foundation’s 2024 Ease of Use Study, reported on April 22, 2025, found that 70% of surveyed consumers with arthritis struggled with products requiring twisting or gripping. The study included 850 consumers and reported results at a 95% confidence level. This finding concerns product and packaging difficulty broadly; it is not a measure of automatic jar opener performance.
A 2010 longitudinal case study by Sajay Arthanat, Vathsala I. Stone, and Douglas J. Usiak evaluated one commercially available automatic jar opener with consumers who had limited hand function. The authors reported high usability and quality ratings, with consistently high reported value during the study. That case study offers promising context, but does not show that every person, device, or jar will have the same result.

Ways to make jar opening easier
- Identify the difficult part. Notice whether the main problem is gripping the lid, holding the jar steady, breaking the seal, positioning a device, or twisting afterward.
- Compare tools against that need. Consider an automatic opener, a rubber grip or non-slip mat, a jar key, or a fixed opener. Each leaves different movements for the user.
- Check the setup. Make sure the user can reach a stable work surface and position the jar and tool safely.
- Check instructions and fit. Review the current product’s compatibility, controls, cleaning guidance, and storage needs; research in this guide did not verify specific model claims.
- Choose what feels manageable. If possible, let the intended user assess the controls and remaining effort before relying on a tool for everyday use.
FAQ
What is the easiest jar opener for arthritic hands?
There is no single easiest option for everyone. A button-operated automatic opener can reduce direct twisting, while a rubber grip, jar key, or fixed opener may work better for someone else. Consider the user’s grip, comfort with positioning the tool, and ability to manage any remaining effort.

They may be worth considering if twisting sealed lids is difficult and the user can position and operate the device. Evidence includes a promising case study of one opener, but it does not establish universal results or a current best model.
What can I use if I can’t open a jar lid?
Options include a battery-powered automatic opener, a rubber grip or non-slip mat, a jar key to help break the vacuum seal, or a fixed opener. Compare how much gripping, twisting, and setup each still requires.

How do I know whether an automatic opener will fit my jars?
Check the current model’s stated compatibility and compare it with the jars you use. This research did not verify specifications or size ranges for particular models, so do not assume a device fits every jar.
Do automatic jar openers remove all the effort?
No. The user still needs to position the jar and device, and may need to remove the loosened lid. Consider whether those steps are manageable and whether the jar can be kept stable.
