There is no single best electric fireplace for every room. Our segmented picks are the Touchstone Sideline Elite 50 Smart for a smart recessed or wall-mounted focal point, the PuraFlame Klaus for an existing fireplace opening, the Duraflame 3D Infrared for a freestanding stove, the TURBRO Suburbs TS17/TS17Q for compact value, and the TURBRO Eternal Flame EF23 for an electric log-set installation. R.W.FLAME is a worthwhile value-oriented alternative when you want to compare several sizes and formats.
These appliances are best understood as supplemental heaters with adjustable flame effects—not replacements for a home’s HVAC system. Measure the opening or wall before buying, verify the exact model’s electrical requirements, and follow the manufacturer’s clearance and installation instructions.
Quick verdict: the best electric fireplace for each use
| Best for | Our pick | Why it stands out | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart recessed or wall-mounted fireplace | Touchstone Sideline Elite 50 Smart, model 80036 | Large 49 3/4-inch display, app and voice controls, six flame colors, ten media-bed colors, adjustable speed and intensity | Requires careful installation and a suitable 120-volt/15-amp electrical connection |
| Traditional fireplace insert | PuraFlame Klaus | Resin logs, glass door, mesh screen, remote control, crackling sound effects, and supplemental heat | Klaus listings can differ in size; verify the exact opening dimensions before ordering |
| Freestanding infrared stove | Duraflame 3D Infrared Electric Fireplace Stove | Furniture-like stove design, adjustable 3D flame effect, remote, automatic heat shutoff, and a manufacturer/editorial coverage claim of up to 1,000 square feet | Coverage is not a guarantee of uniform heating and the exact model number should be confirmed |
| Compact value stove | TURBRO Suburbs TS17/TS17Q | Small freestanding format, traditional appearance, fixed flame effect, automatic shutoff, and an approximately 400-square-foot coverage claim | Do not confuse TS17, TS17Q, and TS20 listings; specifications can vary |
| Existing fireplace or hearth opening | TURBRO Eternal Flame EF23-PB or EF23-LG | Log-set appearance with adjustable flame brightness, remote control, thermostat, and timer | Measure the opening and plug directly into a suitable wall receptacle—never a power strip or extension cord |

Best smart wall-mounted or recessed fireplace: Touchstone Sideline Elite 50 Smart
Why it stands out: The Touchstone Sideline Elite 50, model 80036, is a strong choice when the fireplace is intended to be a modern focal wall rather than a portable heater. It is 49 3/4 inches wide and can be recessed or wall-mounted. Its 1,500-watt heater is rated at 5,000 BTUs, with a claimed coverage area of 400 square feet.
The display is unusually configurable. It provides six flame colors, ten media-bed colors, five intensity levels, three flame speeds, two heat settings, thermostat control from 68 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit, and an eight-hour timer. Smartphone compatibility and Alexa and Google Home voice control add convenience when the fireplace is installed in a room where reaching the touch panel is difficult.
#1 Best Overall
- Attractive and Practical Design: 3.86"D x 60"W x 18.11"H,The thickness of the new style is only 3.86 inches while the old one is 6 inches. And it operates the same as the old one. Also we redesign the location of main power and power cable, which makes the new fireplace more attractive and practical.
- Multi Operation Modes: Touch screen and remote control;12 flame & LED flame bed color modes;5 flame speed modes;5 flame brightness levels; Specially automatic flame design(the flame color and brightness changed
- Energy Saving: 750W & 1500W modes can be adjusted accordingly for both warm and energy saving purpose. The supplemental zone heating is for up to 400 square feet.
- Safety and Comfort: ETL Certificate Approved. It also has auto-heat kill safety to avoid the superheating. The heat is good for maintaining the natural humidity within the air without making the room too dry.
- Let R.W.FLAME electric fireplace warm your home and life.
The trade-off is installation. A recessed unit needs an appropriately framed opening, accurate rough-opening dimensions, adequate clearances, and code-compliant wiring and grounding. Touchstone’s manual specifies a 120-volt, 15-amp circuit for the Sideline Elite series. A 1,500-watt appliance draws approximately 12.5 amps at 120 volts under idealized conditions, so do not assume that any circuit with a nearby outlet is appropriate. Have a qualified electrician review the circuit when the installation is hardwired, the circuit is shared, or the home’s wiring is uncertain.
Best traditional insert: PuraFlame Klaus
Why it stands out: The PuraFlame Klaus insert is designed for readers who want the appearance of a traditional firebox in an existing fireplace opening. Its feature set includes resin logs, a glass door, a mesh screen, a remote control, crackling sound effects, and five flame-brightness levels. It provides 750- and 1,500-watt heat settings and is marketed as supplemental heat for spaces of approximately 400 square feet.
An insert is easier than building a complete masonry fireplace, but it is not a product to order by appearance alone. Measure the opening’s width at several points, height, depth, hearth, trim, and outlet location. Confirm the exact Klaus variant and compare its exterior dimensions—not only the visible firebox—with those measurements. Different listings can present different dimensional versions under the Klaus name.
An existing chimney generally is not used as a flue for an electric insert because the appliance produces no combustion gases. The opening still needs to meet the product’s clearance, support, ventilation, and electrical requirements. Remove or secure components that could obstruct the heater intake or outlet, and follow the exact manual rather than assuming that an old wood-burning fireplace’s clearances automatically apply.
Best freestanding infrared stove: Duraflame 3D Infrared Electric Fireplace Stove
Why it stands out: The Duraflame infrared fireplace stove is the best fit for someone who wants a freestanding, furniture-like appliance instead of a built-in wall installation. The 3D flame effect, remote control, automatic heat shutoff, and infrared heating are the key attractions. This Old House identifies a 24-inch Duraflame 3D infrared model as its best electric stove, while Good Housekeeping names a Duraflame infrared fireplace its best overall.
Both editorial guides cite coverage of up to 1,000 square feet. Treat that number as a manufacturer or editorial estimate, not a promise that the stove will heat a 1,000-square-foot home evenly. Insulation, ceiling height, room layout, outdoor temperature, thermostat settings, and the home’s existing HVAC system can substantially change the result. The Duraflame is best used to add comfort in an occupied room or reduce reliance on central heat in a limited area—not to replace a furnace or heat pump.

Before purchasing, verify the exact Duraflame model number, dimensions, wattage, control features, and current listing. The accessible editorial descriptions identify the product family more consistently than a single stable model number, and marketplace availability can change.
Best compact value stove: TURBRO Suburbs TS17/TS17Q
Why it stands out: For a low-cost compact stove, the TURBRO Suburbs TS17/TS17Q offers a traditional freestanding appearance, fixed flame effects, automatic heat shutoff, and an approximately 400-square-foot coverage claim. TURBRO’s catalog describes the TS17 and TS17Q as compact electric fireplace stoves and includes CSA certification and overheating-protection claims in the product descriptions.
Listings and editorial copy do not always use the model names consistently: Good Housekeeping’s text refers to TS17 in some places and TS20 in another, while TURBRO lists TS17 and TS17Q as related products. Do not merge their dimensions, wattage, controls, or safety features. Check the exact model number on the listing, the manual, and the product label before comparing prices or ordering replacement parts.
The compact format makes this a better choice for a bedroom, office, den, or small living area than for an open-plan space. It is plug-in furniture, not a recessed construction project, but it still needs an unobstructed heater outlet, a stable location, and a correctly rated wall receptacle.

Why it stands out: The TURBRO Eternal Flame EF23 electric log set is intended for an existing fireplace opening or hearth-like space, not as a freestanding stove. The EF23-PB is described as a 23-inch electric log set with adjustable flame brightness, remote control, thermostat, timer, and a 1,400-watt rating. TURBRO’s related EF23-LG is listed as a 1,500-watt infrared model.
The EF23-PB and EF23-LG are related products, not interchangeable names. Confirm the exact SKU, color, dimensions, heat output, and availability at the time of purchase. Measure the fireplace opening and check that the wall receptacle can be reached without routing a cord through a door, under a rug, or behind a combustible obstruction.

The TURBRO manual instructs users to plug the fireplace directly into a wall outlet or receptacle. Do not use a power strip or extension cord. If the opening has no suitable outlet, address the electrical installation before buying the log set rather than treating an extension cord as a permanent solution.
Best value-oriented range: R.W.FLAME
Why it stands out: R.W.FLAME is useful for shoppers who want to compare several installation styles and widths under one brand. Its catalog includes 36-, 39-, 42-, 50-, 60-inch, and larger recessed or wall-mounted models, along with mantel, insert, and log-set formats. A 36/39-inch insert listing describes adjustable flame colors and brightness, an eight-hour timer, and 750- and 1,500-watt heat settings.
This is a product family rather than one unambiguous recommendation. The exact width, rough opening, wattage, mounting method, thermostat behavior, remote, timer, and included media can differ by listing. Use R.W.FLAME as a value comparison category, but do not buy—or link to—a generic brand page without identifying the exact model that fits the room.
How electric fireplaces work—and what they can really heat
Electric fireplaces combine an electric heating element with a visual flame effect. The flame is an illuminated display, not a burning fire. That means the appliance avoids combustion gases, ash, and chimney cleaning, but the heater remains an electrical appliance with hot surfaces, airflow requirements, and circuit demands.
Infrared versus forced-fan heat
Infrared models use infrared energy to warm surrounding objects, which can make the heat feel direct and comfortable in the area near the appliance. Forced-fan models draw room air into the unit, heat it with a coil, and push the warmed air back into the room. Forced-fan systems can be louder because of the fan. The product’s stated coverage area does not tell you by itself which heating method will feel better in your room.
Electric fireplace guides commonly describe outputs from approximately 1,000 to 7,000 BTUs. Most products in this category are supplemental heaters. Even a model with an ambitious coverage claim will not replace a properly sized HVAC system or reproduce the heat of an open wood or gas fire.

Heat mode, flame-only mode, and smart controls
- Heat on: The heating element operates, so wattage and electrical load matter.
- Flame only: The flame display operates without room heating, making the fireplace usable outside the heating season. Exact electricity use depends on the model and selected display settings.
- Smart or no-heat ambiance: Some models add app, voice, timer, color, brightness, or speed controls. Do not assume that every product in a brand family includes the same smart features.
Estimating operating cost
There is no universal cost-per-hour figure. Use this calculation instead:
Cost per hour = wattage ÷ 1,000 × your electricity rate per kilowatt-hour
For example, a 1,500-watt heater running at an electricity rate of $0.20 per kilowatt-hour would cost about $0.30 per hour while the heater is operating. A flame-only setting should use less electricity than heat mode, but the exact amount depends on the appliance. Some published guides use an approximate 18-cents-per-hour figure; that estimate assumes a particular wattage and electricity rate and should not be treated as a national average.

What to check before buying
1. Choose the right format
- Freestanding stoves are the simplest to place and can usually move with the furniture, subject to the manual’s clearance requirements.
- Inserts are designed for an existing fireplace opening and require accurate measurements.
- Wall-mounted fireplaces are comparatively straightforward when the wall can support the unit and an appropriate outlet is available.
- Recessed fireplaces create the cleanest built-in appearance but may require framing, finishing, electrical work, and higher installation cost.
- Mantel and TV-console models combine the firebox with furniture. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for television placement, load limits, heat direction, and clearances.
- Log sets sit inside an existing fireplace or hearth-like opening and are not the same as freestanding stoves or inserts.
2. Measure more than the advertised width
Record the opening width at the top, middle, and bottom; the opening height; available depth; hearth dimensions; trim thickness; and the distance to the nearest outlet. Compare those measurements with the product’s exterior dimensions, firebox dimensions, trim, rough-opening dimensions, and required clearances.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For recessed products, the rough opening is especially important. A fireplace advertised as 50 inches wide may have a different firebox width, exterior trim width, and framing requirement. Touchstone publishes separate fireplace, firebox, and rough-opening dimensions for the Sideline Elite 50; use that kind of dimensional drawing rather than estimating from a product photograph.
3. Check wattage, voltage, and the circuit
A 1,500-watt appliance on a 120-volt supply draws approximately 12.5 amps. That is close enough to a typical 15-amp circuit’s practical limit that other loads on the circuit can matter. Follow the exact manual, local electrical code, and an electrician’s advice. Do not assume a circuit is suitable because a receptacle accepts the plug.
For a hardwired or recessed unit, confirm whether the product permits that installation and whether the work must be completed by a licensed electrician. The Touchstone manual requires wiring and grounding according to local code and the applicable National Electrical Code. Plug-in products still need a suitable wall receptacle and should not be connected through an extension cord or power strip.
4. Prioritize the flame controls you will actually use
Flame brightness, speed, color, ember-bed color, sound, and flame-only operation often affect satisfaction more than a maximum BTU claim. Touchstone’s multiple flame and media-bed settings appeal to readers who want a customizable focal wall. PuraFlame’s logs, glass, screen, and crackling sound target a more traditional appearance. A simpler stove may be preferable if you want to unpack it, plug it in, and use one fixed display.

Look for the exact combination of remote, touch controls, thermostat, timer, smartphone app, and voice-assistant compatibility. Features may differ between sizes and closely named models. An eight-hour timer, for example, does not necessarily mean the same thing as a thermostat or automatic safety shutoff. Read the manual and product listing for the exact SKU.
Installation planning for a construction or remodeling project
- Decide whether the fireplace is decorative, supplemental heat, or both. This determines whether you need a heater, a flame-only display, or smart scheduling.
- Choose the location and format. Decide between freestanding, insert, wall-mounted, recessed, mantel, and log-set installation before rough framing.
- Measure the finished opening. Account for drywall, tile, stone, trim, hearth depth, and any framing that will reduce the available space.
- Plan the electrical route. Confirm voltage, circuit capacity, grounding, receptacle location, cord routing, and whether the manual permits hardwiring. Complete electrical work to local code.
- Review clearances. Keep the heater intake and outlet clear. Follow the manual for combustible materials, mantel placement, wall construction, furniture, curtains, flooring, and television placement.
- Install and test both modes. Check flame-only operation, heat output, thermostat, timer, remote, app, and voice controls separately. Verify that airflow is not blocked and that the cord and receptacle remain accessible as required.
For a remodeling project, framing the opening before confirming the final model is a common avoidable mistake. Product families can contain several widths and installation types, and the visible firebox dimensions may not match the rough opening. Keep the exact manual and dimensional drawing with the project documents.

Electric does not mean risk-free. These fireplaces avoid combustion-related hazards, but they still combine electricity, heat, airflow, and nearby finishes.
- Follow the exact manufacturer’s installation and operating instructions.
- Plug a plug-in unit directly into a properly rated wall receptacle. Do not use an extension cord or power strip unless the exact manual explicitly permits a specific arrangement.
- Keep heater intakes and outlets clear of furniture, curtains, bedding, rugs, dust, and other obstructions.
- Keep children and pets away from hot surfaces and supervise use around combustible materials.
- Keep the appliance dry and indoors unless the exact product is specifically rated for outdoor use.
- Stop using the unit if the cord, plug, receptacle, housing, or controls are damaged, overheating, or behaving abnormally.
- Look for the electrical ratings and recognized testing-laboratory markings described in the product documentation.
- Do not treat automatic heat shutoff as permission to leave the fireplace unattended. It cannot correct a blocked vent, damaged cord, overloaded circuit, or improper installation.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that damaged, defective, or undersized extension cords can create shock and fire hazards and advises consumers not to overload cords. That warning is particularly relevant to electric fireplaces because their heaters can draw substantial current for extended periods.

Prices, availability, and model-name traps
Prices and stock status are volatile, so they should be refreshed immediately before publication or purchase. In the research snapshot, Touchstone listed the Sideline Elite 50 at about $999, several compact or log-set TURBRO products appeared near $89.99 to $119.99, and an R.W.FLAME 36-inch mantel model was listed at about $339.99. Those figures are reference points, not current price guarantees.
Model names deserve equal attention. Klaus listings can show different dimensions. Duraflame’s editorial coverage identifies an infrared fireplace family more reliably than one stable model number. TURBRO’s TS17, TS17Q, and TS20 names should not be treated as interchangeable. TURBRO’s EF23-PB and EF23-LG are related log-set variants with different stated wattages. Confirm the exact SKU, dimensions, controls, heat output, included accessories, warranty terms, and current availability before ordering.
How much independent testing is available?
Consumer Reports says it lab-tested ten electric fireplace inserts for heating performance and ease of operation. The full results were not accessible during this research pass, so this guide does not assign Consumer Reports scores, rankings, or performance claims. That is why the recommendations above are organized by format and use case rather than presented as a laboratory ranking.
Which electric fireplace should you buy?
- Choose the Touchstone Sideline Elite 50 Smart if you want a customizable, app-enabled modern focal wall and are prepared to plan the installation carefully.
- Choose the PuraFlame Klaus if you are filling an existing fireplace opening with a traditional log-and-screen appearance.
- Choose the Duraflame 3D Infrared if you want a freestanding stove with infrared supplemental heat and a larger stated coverage area.
- Choose the TURBRO Suburbs TS17/TS17Q if compact size and lower upfront cost matter most.
- Choose the TURBRO Eternal Flame EF23 if the appliance needs to function as an electric log set inside an existing opening.
- Compare the exact R.W.FLAME model if you want a value-oriented choice across recessed, wall-mounted, insert, mantel, and log-set formats.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an electric fireplace heat an entire house?
Generally, no. Electric fireplaces are supplemental heaters. A model’s stated coverage area is an estimate affected by insulation, ceiling height, room layout, outdoor temperature, thermostat settings, and the home’s HVAC system. Use the fireplace for localized comfort unless a qualified professional has designed a larger heating system around it.
Can I plug a 1,500-watt electric fireplace into a standard outlet?
A 1,500-watt appliance on a 120-volt supply draws approximately 12.5 amps, but suitability depends on the exact manual, circuit capacity, grounding, and other loads sharing the circuit. Plug it directly into an appropriate wall receptacle; never assume that an extension cord or power strip is acceptable.
Will an electric insert fit any existing fireplace?
No. Measure the opening width at multiple points, height, depth, hearth, trim, and outlet location, then compare those measurements with the exact insert’s exterior dimensions, firebox, rough opening, and clearance requirements. PuraFlame Klaus listings, for example, may represent different dimensional variants.
Is infrared better than a forced-fan electric fireplace?
Neither is universally better. Infrared models warm surrounding objects, while forced-fan models heat air and circulate it through the room. Forced-fan systems can be louder because of the fan. Choose based on the room, noise tolerance, controls, installation format, and the exact model’s specifications rather than the label alone.
Is it safe to leave an electric fireplace running unattended?
Do not assume it is. Automatic shutoff is helpful, but it does not eliminate hazards from blocked vents, damaged cords, overloaded circuits, combustible materials, or improper installation. Follow the exact manual and turn the unit off when the manufacturer’s instructions or your circumstances require it.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy for the room and installation—not for a generic best-of label. Touchstone is the strongest smart wall or recessed choice, PuraFlame Klaus is the traditional insert pick, Duraflame is the freestanding infrared-stove choice, and TURBRO covers compact value and existing-fireplace log-set use. Measure first, treat coverage claims as supplemental-heating estimates, and verify the exact electrical and clearance requirements before installation.
