In Bob Vila’s hands-on comparison of nine electric snow shovels, it stood out for its combination of throwing power, approximately 45 minutes of tested runtime, and a reported throwing distance of up to 20 feet. The lighter Snow Joe 24V-SS13 is the better value, while the EGO POWER+ MSS1203 is the more capable platform choice for existing EGO owners.
This is a source-based buying guide, not a claim that we personally tested all five products. The rankings below distinguish Bob Vila’s hands-on observations from manufacturer specifications and claims. Prices, stock, exact kit contents, and seasonal availability can change, so verify the current listing before ordering.
Best electric snow shovels at a glance
| Pick | Best for | Key specifications | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greenworks 80V 12-inch | Best overall power and runtime | 12-inch clearing width; up to 6-inch snow depth; approximately 45 minutes of tested runtime; up to 20-foot throw | Heavier at approximately 19.2 pounds and still intended for compact areas |
| Snow Joe 24V-SS13 | Best value and complete kit | 13-inch clearing width; 6-inch rated cut depth; 4.0-Ah battery and charger kit; up to 20-foot throw; approximately 13.4 pounds | Less suitable for repeated heavy, wet, packed, or icy snow |
| EGO POWER+ MSS1203 | Existing EGO owners and heavier-duty cordless work | 12-inch clearing surface; 56V 4.0-Ah battery; two speeds; variable-speed trigger; directional control; overload protection | More expensive and easy to confuse with the SNS1201 or attachment-only configurations |
| Snow Joe 24V-SS11 | Lightweight work on steps, patios, and walkways | 11-inch clearing width; 7-inch listed clearing depth; 400W motor; up to 20-foot throw; approximately 11.7 pounds | Approximately 20 minutes of runtime in Bob Vila’s testing and less ability in heavy or icy snow |
| Earthwise 16-inch 12-amp corded snow thrower | Continuous operation where outdoor power is available | 16-inch clearing width and 12-amp corded motor according to the reviewed designation | Requires extension-cord management; exact current model, specifications, and kit details need verification |
For most homeowners, the choice comes down to three questions: how much snow must be cleared at once, whether a battery platform is already in the garage, and whether avoiding an extension cord is worth accepting limited battery runtime.

Our five picks
1. Greenworks 80V 12-inch Cordless Battery Snow Shovel: Best overall
The Greenworks 80V snow shovel earned the top position in Bob Vila’s nine-product hands-on test because it combined strong throwing performance with unusually long runtime. The review reports approximately 45 minutes of runtime, a 12-inch clearing width, a maximum snow depth of 6 inches, and throwing distance of up to 20 feet.
That combination makes it the strongest all-around choice here for sidewalks, decks, patios, steps, and small driveways that need more than a quick dusting. The 80V platform also gives it a better argument for buyers who regularly deal with heavier accumulation than a small 24V model can comfortably manage.
The trade-off is weight. Bob Vila measured the installed tool at approximately 19.2 pounds, which is noticeably heavier than compact alternatives. That may be worthwhile for power, but it matters when the tool must be carried up steps, lifted onto a deck, or used by someone who prioritizes low fatigue.

Choose it if: you want the strongest blend of power and runtime for small-area snow removal and can accept a heavier tool.
Do not choose it if: you need a lightweight device for occasional steps and porch cleanup, or you routinely clear large driveways and plow piles. This remains a compact snow shovel, not a replacement for a full-size single-stage or two-stage snow blower.
Availability note: Greenworks confirms the 80V 12-inch cordless snow-shovel line, but the previously indexed kit page was unavailable during the research review. Confirm the exact SKU, battery inclusion, charger inclusion, and current availability before buying. Do not assume that a listing for a Greenworks 40V 12-inch model is the same product.
2. Snow Joe 24V-SS13 IONMAX 13-inch Cordless Snow Shovel: Best value
The Snow Joe 24V-SS13 is the best value for buyers who want a wider clearing path and a complete cordless kit without moving to a higher-voltage system. Snow Joe lists a 13-inch clearing width, a 6-inch rated cut depth, a 4.0-Ah battery-and-charger kit, up to 20 feet of throwing distance, and a claimed capacity of up to 300 pounds of snow per minute.
Bob Vila selected this model as its bang-for-the-buck pick, describing it as compact, easy to handle, and well suited to walkways, patios, decks, and other small areas. The 13-inch path is wider than the SS11’s, so it can reduce the number of passes across a walkway while remaining considerably lighter than the Greenworks 80V model.
Recommended Free Tools
The 300-pounds-per-minute figure is a manufacturer-rated capacity, not a guarantee for every storm. Snow density, moisture, temperature, depth, and how frequently the area is cleared can change real-world performance. As with most compact electric shovels, the SS13 is a better match for snow removed promptly than for deep, wet, frozen, or heavily packed accumulation.
Choose it if: you want the best value for small-area cleanup, need a complete battery-and-charger kit, and prefer a 13-inch clearing path.
Do not choose it if: you regularly clear heavy wet snow, infrequently cleared areas, or a large driveway where a full-size snow blower would be more efficient.
3. EGO POWER+ Multi-Head Snow Shovel Kit MSS1203: Best heavy-duty cordless option
The EGO MSS1203 is the most system-oriented pick in this group. The kit includes a 12-inch Multi-Head snow-shovel attachment, a 4.0-Ah 56V ARC Lithium battery, and a 320W charger. EGO lists two-speed control, a variable-speed trigger, directional throwing control, and overload protection.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

EGO claims that the kit can clear up to a four-car driveway with 6 inches of snow and throw snow up to 25 feet. Those are manufacturer claims rather than independent performance results, so treat them as rated capabilities, not guaranteed outcomes. They nonetheless show why the MSS1203 is attractive to owners who already use EGO’s higher-voltage outdoor-tool platform.
The Multi-Head design is important. When purchased as an attachment rather than the complete MSS1203 kit, the snow shovel requires a compatible EGO power head. EGO identifies the PH1400 and PH1420 power heads as compatible. An attachment-only purchase is not a complete working tool for someone who does not already own the required power head, battery, and charger.
Also check the product name carefully. The SNS1201 standalone snow shovel and the MSS1203 Multi-Head kit are different configurations. The SSA1200 is an attachment designation as well. A retailer listing that uses one of these names should be checked against the included power head, battery, charger, and attachment before purchase.
Consumer Reports includes the EGO MSS1203 in its power-snow-shovel testing program. Its published evaluation categories include removal speed, plow-pile removal, throwing distance, surface cleaning, handling, noise, controls, and width. The available research does not expose a complete public score, so there is no responsible numerical Consumer Reports rating to assign here.
Rank #2
- Cordless Power for Quick Snow Cleanup: The 40V brushless motor delivers consistent clearing power without gas, fumes or extension cords—ideal for everyday cleanup around entrances, walkways and other frequently used areas.
- 12-Inch by 8-Inch Clearing Capacity: Clears a 12-inch-wide path and fresh snow up to 8 inches deep, making it well suited for steps, porches, sidewalks, decks, patios and narrow driveway sections.
- Throws Snow Up to 20 Feet: The powered auger moves snow in a fixed forward direction up to 20 feet, helping clear straight paths and open areas; throw distance varies with snow depth, density and moisture.
- Made for Small-Area Winter Maintenance: The compact cordless design is easier to maneuver in tight spaces where a full-size snow blower may be inconvenient, including stairs, entryways, short walkways and around parked vehicles.
- 40V Battery Kit and Warranty Included: Includes one 40V 4.0Ah battery and fast charger for grab-and-go winter cleanup, backed by a 3-year limited residential tool warranty and responsive customer support.
Choose it if: you already own EGO POWER+ equipment, want directional discharge control and two-speed operation, or prefer a higher-voltage cordless system.
Do not choose it if: you are looking for the least expensive or lightest option, or if you would need to buy every part of the Multi-Head system from scratch.
Availability note: EGO availability was volatile in the reviewed product material, with some official pages showing configurations as coming soon. Check the live manufacturer or retailer listing and confirm whether it is the MSS1203 kit or an attachment-only product.
4. Snow Joe 24V-SS11 IONMAX 11-inch Cordless Snow Shovel: Best lightweight option
The Snow Joe 24V-SS11 is the best lightweight electric snow shovel for users who mainly clear steps, porches, patios, and short walkways. Snow Joe lists an 11-inch clearing path, a 7-inch clearing depth, a 400W motor, up to 20 feet of throwing distance, and a net weight of approximately 11.7 pounds.
Bob Vila selected the SS11 for quiet operation and found it lightweight and easy to use. The downside in that testing was approximately 20 minutes of battery runtime, which is substantially shorter than the Greenworks 80V’s reported runtime. Bob Vila also noted that the SS11’s auger may be less capable in heavy or icy snow.
The SS11 makes sense when maneuverability and storage matter more than clearing speed. Its narrower path can be an advantage around steps, railings, narrow gates, and landscaping where a wider tool is awkward. It is less compelling for a long driveway because the 11-inch width and shorter tested runtime mean more passes and more frequent battery-management concerns.
Choose it if: you want a lightweight cordless snow shovel for quick, localized cleanup and compact storage.
Do not choose it if: you need to clear broad areas, routinely face deep or wet snow, or want the longest runtime available among these picks.

The Earthwise 16-inch corded snow thrower was Bob Vila’s corded recommendation in its 2026 electric snow-shovel testing. Its main advantage is continuous operation: as long as the tool has appropriate outdoor power, it does not stop for battery charging or require a second battery.
A 16-inch path can make sense for a small driveway or broad walkway when the operator has a convenient outdoor outlet and can manage the cord safely. It is also a practical choice for a property where the tool may sit unused for long periods and the owner does not want to maintain a charged battery.
The cord is both the reason to buy this model and its central drawback. It must be routed so it stays behind the operator and clear of the auger or throwing mechanism. Use only an extension cord that meets the tool manual’s outdoor rating, length, and gauge requirements; never substitute an indoor-rated cord. Follow the manual and local electrical-safety requirements, including any guidance about outdoor GFCI protection.
The available product material identifies the tested recommendation as an Earthwise 16-inch, 12-amp corded snow thrower but does not expose every specification or the exact current model number. Before publication or purchase, verify the live listing for the model number, cord requirements, rated clearing depth, throw distance, warranty, and included accessories.

Do not choose it if: you have a large property with difficult cord routes, no accessible outdoor outlet, or a layout where cord management creates more risk than convenience.
How these electric snow shovels were evaluated
The primary comparative evidence comes from Bob Vila’s hands-on test of nine electric snow shovels. That review considered practical factors including clearing performance, handling, runtime, throwing distance, weight, and suitability for different snow conditions. It supports the Greenworks overall ranking, Snow Joe SS13 value ranking, Snow Joe SS11 lightweight and quiet-operation positioning, and Earthwise corded recommendation.
The EGO recommendation rests on a different evidence base. EGO’s official documentation supplies the MSS1203’s battery, charger, controls, compatibility, overload protection, and claimed driveway and throwing capacities. Consumer Reports confirms that the model appears in its power-snow-shovel test program, but the available public research does not provide the full score. Those facts should not be blended into a claim that the EGO achieved a particular independent ranking.
Runtime, throw distance, snow capacity, and driveway-size figures should always be read in context. A manufacturer’s maximum or rated figure is not the same as a repeatable result in wet snow, icy snow, dense end-of-driveway piles, or a storm that exceeds the listed depth.
How to choose the right electric snow shovel
1. Match the tool to the area, not just the battery voltage
Electric snow shovels are compact clearing tools. They are particularly useful on decks, stairs, patios, sidewalks, porches, and small driveways. A 12- or 13-inch tool can be convenient in tight areas, but it will require more passes than a conventional snow blower with a substantially wider intake.
If the main job is a large driveway, a long private road, repeated plow berms, or snow that is allowed to freeze in place, consider a full-size single-stage or two-stage snow blower instead. The EGO’s claimed ability to address a four-car driveway with 6 inches of snow should not be generalized to every property, storm, or operator.
2. Treat clearing width and depth as separate specifications
Width determines how much ground the machine covers in each pass. Depth indicates the snow height the manufacturer or test source expects it to handle. Wider is not automatically better: a 16-inch corded model may clear faster on an open walkway, while an 11-inch cordless model may be easier around steps and obstacles.
Do not treat the listed depth as a guarantee for heavy snow. A compact shovel may perform acceptably when snow is cleared in several lighter passes but struggle when the same depth is wet, compacted, or frozen.
3. Choose a battery platform carefully
If you already own compatible Greenworks, EGO, Snow Joe, or another tool-platform battery, that ecosystem may affect the real cost and convenience. Platform compatibility is not universal merely because two products are cordless. Confirm the voltage family, battery connector, power-head requirements, and whether the listing includes a battery and charger.
The Snow Joe 24V-SS13 is listed as a battery-and-charger kit, while the EGO MSS1203 kit includes its 56V battery and charger. The Greenworks 80V kit configuration was not confirmed in the available product material. Never assume that a bare tool includes the battery shown in a retailer photograph.
4. Be realistic about wet, icy, and packed snow
Prompt clearing is the safest assumption for compact electric shovels. Bob Vila’s guidance indicates that electric shovels may handle wet snow when it is only an inch or two deep, or when using a heavier-duty option such as the EGO Multi-Head kit. Smaller models may need multiple passes, and an icy layer or frozen plow pile can exceed what their augers are designed to remove.

Rank #4
- Throws snow up to 25 feet with 60-degree directional control dial
- Clears up to a 3-car driveway with 6 inches of snow with a recommended 2.5Ah ARC Lithium battery (available separately)
- Hinged shaft for convenient, compact storage
- High-efficiency brushless motor delivers long run times, low vibrations, and an extended motor life
- Two-speed selector for throwing distance control
5. Consider discharge control
Throwing distance matters only if the snow can be discharged where it will not create another obstruction. The Greenworks, Snow Joe SS13, and Snow Joe SS11 are listed or reported at up to 20 feet, while EGO claims up to 25 feet for the MSS1203. EGO’s directional throwing control gives it an advantage when the discharge direction must be managed around walls, vehicles, doors, or neighboring property.
6. Put weight and handling ahead of raw specifications
A heavier tool can deliver useful power but may be tiring on stairs or when repeatedly lifting it into position. The approximate weights in this group range from 11.7 pounds for the SS11 to 19.2 pounds for the Greenworks 80V model. Battery weight is included in some reported figures but may be presented differently across manufacturers, so compare complete operating weight where possible.
7. Check warranty, parts, and kit contents
Snow Joe lists a two-year warranty for the 24V-SS13. For every model, confirm the current warranty terms, registration requirements, replacement-part availability, and whether the package includes the battery, charger, power head, scraper components, and hardware you need.
Maintenance parts can be model-specific. Snow Joe documents a Snow Joe SS13 replacement belt and a Snow Joe SS11 auger blade. Those parts are not interchangeable merely because both tools use the 24V label. Match the exact model number before ordering electric snow shovel replacement parts.

Other platform alternative
Readers already invested in Toro’s Flex-Force 60V tools can also compare the Toro 60V Power Shovel, model 39909. It is an alternative platform option rather than one of the five primary picks in this guide. Verify the battery system, current kit configuration, and intended-use specifications before treating it as a direct substitute for any model above.
Availability and buying checklist
Snow-removal equipment is highly seasonal, and a product page can change from a complete kit to a bare tool or disappear between winter purchasing periods. Before placing an order or visiting a dealer, use this checklist:
- Confirm the exact model number, not just the brand and voltage.
- Check whether the battery and charger are included.
- For EGO products, verify whether the listing is the MSS1203 kit, the SNS1201 standalone shovel, or an attachment-only configuration.
- For Greenworks, confirm that the listing is the 80V 12-inch model rather than a 40V product with a similar name.
- Verify the manufacturer’s current warranty and available replacement parts.
- Check the retailer’s current stock, delivery window, and return policy; these details were not used to rank the products here.
- For corded models, confirm the extension-cord requirements and access to a suitable outdoor outlet.
If you are deciding where to buy an electric snow shovel, compare the complete package rather than the lowest bare-tool price. Battery, charger, compatible power head, and replacement-part support can matter more than a small difference in the initial listing price.

The Greenworks 80V is the best overall choice when power and runtime matter most and the approximately 19.2-pound operating weight is acceptable. The Snow Joe 24V-SS13 is the most sensible value for routine walkway, patio, deck, and small-area cleanup. Choose the EGO MSS1203 when you are already invested in EGO’s 56V Multi-Head ecosystem or want more control features. Pick the Snow Joe SS11 for lightweight, quiet, localized work, and the Earthwise corded model when continuous operation is more important than cordless convenience.
Whichever model you choose, clear snow promptly, take smaller passes in wet or packed conditions, and use a full-size snow blower when the area, depth, or plow accumulation exceeds what a compact electric shovel can reasonably handle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an electric snow shovel replace a full-size snow blower?
Usually not. Electric snow shovels are best for decks, steps, patios, sidewalks, and small driveways. They can require multiple passes in wet or packed snow and are not universal replacements for single-stage or two-stage snow blowers, especially on large driveways or plow piles.
Which electric snow shovel is best for wet snow?
A heavier-duty model such as the EGO MSS1203 is the better starting point, but no compact model should be treated as guaranteed to handle every wet storm. Bob Vila’s guidance is that electric shovels may handle wet snow when it is only an inch or two deep; smaller models may need several passes.

Does the EGO MSS1203 include everything needed to use it?
The MSS1203 kit is documented as including the Multi-Head snow-shovel attachment, a 4.0-Ah 56V ARC Lithium battery, and a 320W charger. An attachment-only EGO configuration is different and requires a compatible PH1400 or PH1420 power head. Confirm the live listing before purchase.
What is the difference between the Snow Joe 24V-SS11 and 24V-SS13?
The SS11 is the lighter, narrower model at approximately 11.7 pounds with an 11-inch path and approximately 20 minutes of runtime in Bob Vila’s testing. The SS13 has a wider 13-inch path, a 4.0-Ah battery-and-charger kit, and weighs approximately 13.4 pounds. The SS13 is the better value and the SS11 is better for lightweight, localized cleanup.
Are batteries and chargers included with every cordless snow shovel?
No. Kit contents vary by model and retailer. The Snow Joe SS13 and EGO MSS1203 materials identify battery-and-charger kits, but the Greenworks 80V kit configuration was not confirmed in the available research. Check the exact SKU and package contents rather than relying on product photographs.
The Bottom Line
Best overall: Greenworks 80V 12-inch. Best value: Snow Joe 24V-SS13. Best for EGO owners: EGO MSS1203. Best lightweight option: Snow Joe 24V-SS11. Best corded option: Earthwise 16-inch 12-amp corded snow thrower. These are compact snow-removal tools, so match the model to the area and snow conditions instead of expecting one to replace a full-size snow blower.
