Pottery can do more than hold plants: a well-placed vessel can anchor an entry, add rhythm along a path, or provide a steady sculptural presence as its planting changes with the seasons. The best choice balances appearance with practical needs—especially plant size, drainage, watering, mobility, and exposure to weather.
Give each pot a role in the landscape
Start by deciding what the vessel should do visually. A distinctive pot can act as a focal point at an entry, terrace, path junction, or garden-room transition. A sequence of similar pots can create rhythm, while a quieter vessel can support the planting without competing with it. These are design choices rather than guaranteed effects: judge them in relation to the surrounding architecture, available space, and the mature size of the plants.
Use scale, shape, and finish deliberately
Relate the pot’s visual weight and proportions to the space and the plant it will contain. A restrained form can let foliage take the lead; a more decorative urn or glazed finish can give the vessel a stronger presence. Color and texture can echo nearby materials or introduce a deliberate contrast. Container-gardening guidance from the Chicago Botanic Garden and University of Florida IFAS Extension supports using containers to contribute color, texture, interest, and style.
Choose a focal pot or a repeated group
One substantial vessel can mark a destination or create a visual pause. Several related pots can make a larger area feel connected; repeating a material, finish, or color helps unify the group. Leave enough room for each plant’s mature form and for people to pass, sit, or work around the arrangement. For mixed plantings, the Naples Botanical Garden’s container-design guidance is a useful reference for composing plants within a vessel.

Coordinate the vessel with the planting
Consider the plant’s mature shape, the view from which the pot will be seen, and the vessel’s proportions. Upright forms, spreading foliage, and trailing plants create different silhouettes against a pot. The container and planting should be considered together: a visually prominent vessel needs a suitable setting, while a simpler one can provide a calm backdrop for foliage or flowers.
Plan for seasonal change as well. The Chicago Botanic Garden describes rotating container plantings through the seasons and using branches and boughs in winter. That approach lets a durable vessel remain part of the composition while its contents change.

Choose a pot that works for the plant and site
Appearance is only one part of the decision. Container size, drainage, material, weight, and exposure influence whether a pot suits its planting and location. The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach guide to selecting plant containers covers size, drainage, and material considerations.
- Plant fit: Choose a container with room appropriate to the plant, and use a growing medium suited to the planting.
- Drainage: Provide a clear route for excess water to leave the root zone.
- Material: Consider how the vessel’s porosity affects watering and how it may fare in local weather.
- Placement: Account for sun, wind, reflected heat, frost exposure, and whether the pot will be permanent or moved.
- Maintenance: Make sure the planting is accessible for watering and that the pot can be protected or stored if needed.
Understand pottery’s watering and weather trade-offs
Porous terra-cotta may dry faster
Terra-cotta is porous, so water evaporates through it faster than through less porous materials such as plastic. As a result, a terra-cotta pot can dry more quickly and need more frequent attention to watering. That does not mean every plant prefers the drier conditions; match the vessel to the plant’s needs and the site. The Chicago Botanic Garden’s container-gardening advice discusses terra-cotta’s properties.

Plan for heavy pots and winter exposure
Large or heavy pottery may be difficult to move, so decide whether the pot will stay in place before filling it. Sun, wind, and reflected heat can also influence placement and maintenance. In freezing climates, moisture and freeze-thaw cycles can damage pottery, though the risk depends on the product and local conditions. Illinois Extension advises thoroughly drying and securely covering outdoor pottery, or storing it upside down, and recommends considering whether a container will be moved or left permanently in place. Follow the maker’s instructions for the particular pot. See Illinois Extension’s container material guidance.

Use a pot with an appropriate drainage hole. If a decorative outer vessel has no hole, a suitable inner pot or liner arrangement can keep the planting vessel’s drainage path intact. Before drilling pottery, check its construction and use a bit suitable for the material; Iowa State Extension describes ceramic-capable bits in its container-selection guidance.

Do not add gravel or broken pottery to the bottom as a drainage fix. UBC Botanical Garden explains that a coarse layer can create an elevated saturated zone, reducing usable root and water volume; a porous growing medium throughout the container is the better approach. On patios and other hard surfaces, keep the outlet clear and raise the pot slightly on shims or similar supports so water does not collect beneath it. Consult UBC Botanical Garden’s container-growing guidance.
A saucer or tray can catch runoff where needed, particularly under porous ceramic that may release moisture. Make sure it does not block the drainage outlet or leave the pot sitting in unwanted standing water. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s containers visual guide discusses trays for porous containers.
