WOOD Magazine’s “The $8,000.00 Workshop” profiles woodworker Dale Heisinger’s dedicated shop on Orcas Island, Washington: a 16-by-24-foot outbuilding organized around clear work aisles, adaptable machinery, dust collection and purpose-built storage. The title’s dollar figure is not an itemized or current construction estimate; the profile does not explain how it was calculated.
What the workshop includes
WOOD Magazine’s profile, updated July 7, 2023, describes a shop built in 2003. The enclosed workspace measures 16 by 24 feet, with a 6-by-8-foot covered porch. Inside, the shop has a 12-foot vaulted ceiling, double doors and 200-amp electrical service. These are details of Heisinger’s shop, not a recommended specification for every workshop.
The double doors and multiple aisles support moving materials through the room and handling long stock. The layout’s emphasis is practical access: machines and work areas are arranged to preserve paths through the shop rather than filling every available floor area.
How the layout supports woodworking
Moveable machines and clear paths
The jointer, bandsaw and sanders sit on mobile bases. Heisinger can reposition them when a project calls for longer stock or a different working arrangement. This approach trades some permanence for flexibility; the profile does not provide dimensions for the aisles or describe a universal layout plan.

Dust collection routed overhead and along walls
A central dust-collection system serves larger tools. Wall- and ceiling-mounted ducts keep more of the floor and overhead space clear. The listed collector is a Grizzly 2-hp, two-bag unit; the profile does not identify its model number or give duct dimensions.
Storage for boards and sheet goods
The shop includes a lumber rack for boards, a swing-out holder for sheet goods, and a sliding-door cabinet fitted with perforated hardboard panels. The profile presents these as features built by the owner or belonging to his shop, not as identified retail products.

What the $8,000 title does—and does not—tell you
Although the title names $8,000.00, WOOD Magazine’s profile does not provide a building or equipment cost breakdown, say how the amount was calculated, or present it as a current estimate. It therefore cannot be used to budget a comparable workshop today. The article documents the shop’s dimensions, features and named equipment, but does not establish what a new build with those elements would cost.
