Short answer: CrossFire Bed Bug Concentrate is the strongest choice for a structured, label-driven treatment program; Bedlam Plus is the most versatile ready-to-use aerosol; PT Alpine is the standout dinotefuran aerosol; Ortho Home Defense Max is a practical mainstream spot-treatment spray; and Raid MAX is the best fit when foam delivery helps you target cracks and crevices. The remaining picks serve narrower mattress-seam, resistant-bed-bug, or egg-treatment use cases.

There is no universally best bed bug spray. Bed bugs hide in seams, cracks, furniture joints, box springs, baseboards, and nearby rooms, while insecticide resistance varies between local populations. A spray works best as one part of an integrated pest-management plan that includes preparation, laundering and high-heat drying, monitoring, vacuuming or steam where appropriate, encasements, and correctly timed follow-up treatments.

Product labels, formulas, EPA registrations, package names, and availability can change. Always compare the current label on the exact package with the surface and pest you intend to treat. The product descriptions below are based on label and manufacturer information, not independent laboratory testing or personal use.

Quick picks: choose the spray for the job

Product Best for Format and notable chemistry Main limitation
CrossFire Bed Bug Concentrate A structured DIY or professional-style treatment program Concentrate with contact and residual claims for bed bugs and eggs, including resistant strains Requires accurate label-based dilution, equipment, and careful application
Bedlam Plus A ready-to-use aerosol with multiple insecticidal ingredients Pressurized aerosol; sumithrin, imidacloprid, and MGK 264 are identified in technical material Indoor use, surfaces, ventilation, and reentry are label-dependent
PT Alpine Flea & Bed Bug Pressurized Insecticide A targeted dinotefuran aerosol Professional-style pressurized aerosol containing dinotefuran Aerosol hazards and exact permitted surfaces require strict label compliance
Ortho Home Defense Max Bed Bug, Flea & Tick Killer Widely available consumer spot treatment Ready-to-use bottle with bifenthrin, imidacloprid, and piperonyl butoxide Designed for spot treatment, not a complete whole-room solution
Hot Shot Pyrethroid-Resistant Bed Bug Killer A consumer aerosol marketed for resistant bed bugs 17.5-ounce aerosol with a pyrethroid, imidacloprid, and MGK 264 listed The resistant-bed-bug claim is not a guarantee against every local population
Hot Shot Bed Bug Killer With Egg Kill Narrow mattress-seam spot treatment 64-ounce Flip & Go liquid; cypermethrin Its cypermethrin chemistry may be a poor fit where resistance is contributing to failure
Raid MAX Bed Bug Crack & Crevice Extended Protection Foaming Spray Visually targeted cracks, seams, and crevices Foam-format spray positioned for bed bugs and eggs Foam does not replace inspection and treatment of surrounding harborages
Harris Egg Kill & Resistant Bed Bug Killer Shoppers comparing a consumer liquid with egg and resistance positioning Ready-to-use liquid; verify the exact variant and current label Harris sells multiple bed bug formulas, so claims cannot be transferred between products

Registration matters, but it is not a promise that any product will eliminate an infestation. An EPA-registered pesticide is registered for the claims and uses on its label; success still depends on finding harborages, applying the product correctly, repeating treatment when appropriate, and accounting for resistance.

1. CrossFire Bed Bug Concentrate: best for a structured treatment program

CrossFire belongs on this list because it is specifically positioned for bed bug treatment rather than being a general household insect spray. Its EPA label materials describe control of bed bugs and eggs, including pyrethroid-resistant and field or wild strains, with contact and residual claims.

Best fit: A careful DIY user who understands label-based pesticide application, or a professional-style treatment program where the correct equipment and preparation are available.

Ortho Home Defense Max Bed Bug, Flea & Tick Killer, 1 gal. | Also Kills Bed Bug Eggs, Ready-to-Use, Indoor Pest Control Spray
  • READY-TO-USE APPLICATOR: Apply this bed bug spray for homes using the included Comfort Wand to target tight and hard-to-reach places where bed bugs hide
  • BED BUG KILLER: Kill bed bugs, bed bug eggs, fleas and ticks with Ortho Home Defense Max Bed Bug, Flea & Tick Killer
  • BED BUG SOLUTION SYSTEM: This indoor bug spray is a Step 2 product in the Ortho Bed Bug Solution System; use with Step 1: Detect and Trap and Step 3: Cracks and Crevices products for best results
  • KILLS TOUGHEST BED BUGS: This bed bug killer spray kills even the toughest bed bugs (pyrethroid-resistant bed bugs)
  • WHERE TO USE INDOORS: Use this indoor bug killer as a spot treatment around bed frames, baseboards and mattress seams, tufts, and folds

Because CrossFire is a concentrate, the user must measure and dilute it exactly as the current label specifies. The label—not a retailer description—controls the dilution rate, application equipment, permitted surfaces, ventilation requirements, and reentry instructions. Do not improvise a stronger mixture in an attempt to overcome resistance, and do not combine it with another pesticide unless the label expressly permits that combination.

CrossFire’s resistant-bed-bug positioning is useful when comparing chemistry, but it should not be read as a guarantee against every population. EPA and the National Pesticide Information Center note that resistance differs by population and that treatment failures can also result from missed harborages, reinfestation, poor preparation, or incorrect application.

2. Bedlam Plus: best ready-to-use aerosol with multiple ingredients

Bedlam Plus is a ready-to-use aerosol for targeted indoor treatment. MGK technical material identifies sumithrin, imidacloprid, and MGK 264 among its listed active or synergist components and describes contact kill with residual activity. The product is labeled for indoor non-food areas and identifies use areas that can include mattresses, wood furniture, carpet, bed frames, walls, floors, and baseboards, subject to the exact label directions.

Best fit: Someone who wants an aerosol for seams, cracks, furniture, bed frames, and other labeled indoor sites without mixing a concentrate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The useful distinction is convenience and targeted delivery, not permission to spray an entire bedroom indiscriminately. Confirm that the exact surface is listed before application, keep people and animals out as directed, and do not allow reentry until the label’s drying or clearance requirement has been met. The can is pressurized, so follow its storage, ventilation, and ignition-source warnings.

Bedlam Plus should not be described as safe to use around pets or children in the abstract. The relevant question is whether people and animals have been excluded for the period required by the label and whether the treated area is dry or otherwise cleared for reentry.

3. PT Alpine Flea & Bed Bug Pressurized Insecticide: best dinotefuran aerosol

PT Alpine Flea & Bed Bug Pressurized Insecticide provides a different chemistry option from the pyrethroid-heavy products commonly found in consumer aisles. BASF identifies dinotefuran as the product’s insecticide, and its safety documentation identifies EPA registration number 499-561.

Best fit: Targeted crack-and-crevice or other indoor applications where the current label permits the use and the applicator can manage a professional-style aerosol safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its dinotefuran formulation makes it relevant when resistance to common pyrethroid chemistry is a concern. That does not make it universally effective, and it does not eliminate the need to inspect and treat harborages. Use only the exact application method and sites listed on the package label.

Do not assume that PT Alpine is appropriate for mattresses, upholstered furniture, bedding, or every carpeted surface. Check the exact label first. As with other aerosols, treat the can as a pressurized and potentially flammable product: keep it away from ignition sources, use it with the required ventilation, and follow all personal-protection and reentry instructions.

4. Ortho Home Defense Max Bed Bug, Flea & Tick Killer: best widely available consumer spot-treatment spray

Ortho’s ready-to-use product is a practical choice for consumers who need a mainstream bottle with a wand-style application format. Ortho identifies bed frames, mattress seams, tufts, folds, and baseboards as indoor spot-treatment areas. Its listed ingredients are bifenthrin, imidacloprid, and piperonyl butoxide.

Best fit: A consumer treating visible activity and labeled hiding places around a bed, rather than someone looking for a single spray to solve a widespread infestation.

  • HIGHLY EFFECTIVE, PLANT-POWERED BED BUG KILLER: EcoVenger Bed Bug Killer uses a patented blend of botanical insecticidal compounds to combat tough insects. • NON-TOXIC, SAFE & ECO-FRIENDLY: Certified as a USDA BioBased insecticide and dermatologically safe. This product is child and pet-friendly, making it safe to use directly on mattresses and box springs without worry.

Ortho states that people and pets may enter treated areas after the spray has dried, subject to label directions. That statement does not authorize spraying people, animals, bedding, or unlisted surfaces. Keep the room clear during application, prevent contact with wet residues, and use the label’s instructions for ventilation and reentry.

The wand makes spot treatment easier, but it does not make the product a complete infestation solution. Bed bugs may be behind a headboard, inside a box spring, under nearby furniture, along baseboards, or in an adjacent room. Preparation, monitoring, and follow-up remain necessary.

5. Hot Shot Pyrethroid-Resistant Bed Bug Killer: best consumer aerosol marketed for resistant bed bugs

Hot Shot’s 17.5-ounce Pyrethroid-Resistant Bed Bug Killer is an accessible aerosol whose product positioning specifically addresses resistant bed bugs and eggs. The listed ingredients include a pyrethroid, imidacloprid, and MGK 264. The label identifies indoor use areas that can include mattresses, wood furniture, carpet, bed frames, headboards, floors, moldings, ceilings, and walls when those uses are permitted by the current label.

Best fit: A consumer who prefers a ready-to-use aerosol and needs targeted treatment on listed indoor surfaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hot Shot directs users to spray from 8 to 10 inches away until the surface is slightly damp, then ventilate and keep children and pets away until treated surfaces are dry. Those instructions apply to the product’s label directions; they are not a general rule for every bed bug aerosol.

The phrase pyrethroid-resistant is a product claim, not a guarantee for every infestation or geographic area. Resistance varies locally, and overapplication can increase exposure without improving control. If correctly applied, label-approved treatments are not working, stop escalating the amount and investigate missed harborages, reinfestation, or the need for professional help.

6. Hot Shot Bed Bug Killer With Egg Kill: best for narrow mattress-seam treatment

Hot Shot Bed Bug Killer With Egg Kill is a 64-ounce Flip & Go liquid intended for indoor spot treatment of mattress tufts, folds, vent holes, buttons, creases, indentations, and seams. The product is labeled to kill bed bugs and eggs by contact and directs users to spray until damp but not saturated. While bed bugs remain present, the label directs users to inspect and reapply every two weeks.

Best fit: A small, localized, label-approved spot treatment after the mattress and surrounding area have been inspected and prepared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a narrower recommendation than the products intended for a broader treatment program. Its listed active ingredient is cypermethrin, so it should not be treated as the first choice for a persistent infestation where pyrethroid resistance may be involved. Do not saturate a mattress, and do not assume that a mattress-seam spray reaches bugs inside a box spring, bed frame, wall gap, or nearby furniture.

Use the exact current label to determine whether the product is allowed on the particular mattress or upholstered surface, how much may be applied, and when the area may be reoccupied.

7. Raid MAX Bed Bug Crack & Crevice Extended Protection Foaming Spray: best foam-format option

Raid MAX Bed Bug Crack & Crevice Extended Protection Foaming Spray is a useful format choice when the main task is visually targeting narrow cracks, joints, seams, and crevices. SC Johnson Professional positions it as a foam that kills bed bugs and their eggs before they hatch.

Best fit: Label-approved cracks and crevices around bed frames, furniture joints, baseboards, and similar hiding areas where foam delivery helps the user see where the product went.

  • EASY TO USE SPOT TREATMENT: Once bed bugs are detected, spray this indoor bug killer around bed frames, headboards, floors, and carpeting as a spot treatment

Foam can improve targeting, but it does not make hidden-bed-bug treatment automatic. Inspect the nearby mattress, box spring, headboard, bed frame, furniture, baseboards, and adjacent rooms. Follow the label for the permitted crack-and-crevice sites and the amount to apply.

Do not confuse a crack-and-crevice foam with a fogger or bug bomb. Foggers should not be the sole method of bed bug control, and indiscriminate dispersal can miss the deep harborages where bed bugs spend much of their time while creating additional exposure and fire hazards.

8. Harris Egg Kill & Resistant Bed Bug Killer: best consumer liquid for shoppers comparing egg and resistance claims

Harris markets Egg Kill & Resistant Bed Bug Killer as a consumer liquid spray and identifies it as EPA registered. It earns a place here for shoppers who want a recognizable ready-to-use liquid with egg-kill and resistance-oriented positioning.

Best fit: Consumers comparing liquid products who are willing to verify the exact formulation, EPA registration number, label claims, and permitted use sites on the package.

Harris sells multiple bed bug products. EPA registration materials for one Harris Home Pest Control Bed Bug Killer registration identify deltamethrin, but that information must not be transferred automatically to every Harris product or retail variant. Check the exact product name and registration number before relying on an active-ingredient or surface-use claim.

As with every product in this list, an egg-kill claim does not mean that a single application eliminates all eggs or prevents newly hatched bugs from emerging. Follow-up inspection and any label-directed reapplication are part of the treatment plan.

How to compare bed bug sprays before buying

1. Confirm registration and label fit

Look for an EPA registration number, or confirm that the product qualifies under an applicable minimum-risk exemption. The label must identify bed bugs as a target pest and must permit use on the surface or site you intend to treat. A product without an EPA registration number has not been reviewed by EPA for its pesticide claims in the same way a registered product has.

Marketing language is not a substitute for the label. A product page may mention mattresses or furniture broadly while the current package label limits the treatment to seams, cracks, or specific materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Decide between ready-to-use and concentrate

Ready-to-use pump sprays and aerosols reduce measuring and mixing errors and are convenient for small, targeted applications. Concentrates can be more practical for a structured program or larger treatment area, but only when the user has the correct equipment and can measure, dilute, apply, ventilate, and reenter exactly as directed.

3. Consider active-ingredient diversity without assuming a guarantee

Many bed bug populations show resistance to common insecticides, particularly pyrethroid-related chemistry. That is why a product featuring a different active ingredient, or a label claim addressing resistant strains, may deserve consideration. It still does not guarantee success against the population in a particular building.

Do not rotate or combine products casually. Use one product according to its label, and ask a licensed pest professional about a resistance-management plan when treatment is persistent or widespread.

4. Separate contact kill from complete control

A spray can kill a bug it reaches without eliminating bugs hidden behind a baseboard, inside a box spring, under a bed frame, or in an adjoining room. Residual activity can help after application, but it does not compensate for missed harborages or reinfestation. The practical question is not simply whether a product kills bed bugs on contact; it is whether the product, preparation, application, monitoring, and follow-up form a complete plan.

  • Always read, understand and follow label safety and application instructions; For use as intended; State restrictions may applyDO NOT apply to entire mattress; apply only to edges, tufts, folds, sides and seams

5. Check the permitted surfaces

Mattresses, box springs, upholstered furniture, wood, carpet, baseboards, walls, and cracks are not interchangeable. Never infer that a product is approved for a mattress because another product is. Treat only the sites listed on the exact current label, and never spray bedding, clothing, people, or pets unless the label expressly permits that use—which ordinary bed bug pesticides generally do not.

6. Account for application hazards

Aerosols are pressurized and may be flammable. Liquids can irritate the eyes and skin. Before treatment, remove or protect food and items that should not be contaminated, keep children and animals out, provide the ventilation required by the label, wear the specified protective equipment, and observe the reentry period. Never use an outdoor-only pesticide indoors.

A safer treatment plan: spray is only one step

EPA recommends integrated pest management rather than spray-only control. The following sequence reduces the chance that a missed bug or newly hatched egg will undo the work.

  1. Confirm the problem and map the area. Inspect the bed, mattress seams, box spring, frame, headboard, nearby furniture, baseboards, clutter, and adjoining rooms. In an apartment or other multi-unit building, notify the landlord or building manager so connected units can be assessed.
  2. Prepare without spreading the infestation. Place washable bedding and clothing in sealed bags before moving them. Use a dryer at high heat for items that can safely tolerate it, following the item and appliance instructions. Reduce clutter and avoid carrying unbagged possessions from an infested room into a clean one.
  3. Use encasements. A properly selected bed bug mattress encasement and a box spring bed bug cover can trap bugs inside and remove hiding places from the outside surfaces. Encasements are not a substitute for inspecting the frame, floor, furniture, and surrounding room; follow the cover manufacturer’s instructions for installation and handling.
  4. Vacuum and steam where appropriate. Vacuuming can remove bugs and debris from reachable areas, while steam can supplement treatment on suitable surfaces. Use a bed bug steamer only as directed by the equipment manufacturer and in a way that will not damage the material. Neither method guarantees that bugs deep inside a structure have been reached.
  5. Apply one selected pesticide according to its label. Use the correct dilution for concentrates, the correct nozzle or delivery method, the permitted amount, and only the listed surfaces. Do not mix products or apply more frequently than directed.
  6. Monitor and follow up. Place bed bug interceptors under bed legs where practical. They can help detect activity and show whether bugs remain, but they do not replace treatment. Inspect regularly and repeat only when the product label directs it or a pest professional provides the schedule.
  7. Escalate if the plan is failing. Continuing to spray every day, changing products randomly, or increasing the dose can increase exposure and may worsen resistance without solving the infestation.

What not to use

  • Do not use rubbing alcohol, kerosene, or gasoline. They are dangerous, can ignite, and are not a reliable bed bug treatment.
  • Do not make improvised pesticide mixtures. Combining products can create exposure and application hazards and is not permitted unless the relevant label expressly allows it.
  • Do not spray excessively or daily. More pesticide is not automatically more effective and may contaminate surfaces or increase risk.
  • Do not rely on pool-grade or food-grade diatomaceous earth. These products are not a substitute for a registered pesticide and can create inhalation or contamination concerns. If a pesticide dust is used, it must be a properly registered product applied with the label-approved method and equipment.
  • Do not treat foggers or bug bombs as a complete solution. They may fail to reach protected harborages and can create fire and exposure hazards. EPA guidance says they should not be the sole control method.

When to call a professional

Contact a licensed pest-management professional when bed bugs are present in multiple rooms, the infestation is in an apartment or other multi-unit building, the hiding places cannot be identified, correctly applied label treatments have failed, or someone in the household may be especially vulnerable to pesticide exposure. Professional help is also sensible when the identity of the insect is uncertain or when moving furniture and belongings could spread the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the professional what inspection method, preparation, treatment chemistry, follow-up schedule, and warranty or retreatment terms apply. A professional may recommend heat treatment, targeted pesticide treatment, or a combination of methods. Aprehend is a notable biological spray option, but Rockwell Labs states that it requires specialized equipment and training and is available only to licensed pest professionals; it is not a general consumer substitute for the products above.

For multi-unit housing, treating only one room or apartment may not be enough. Coordinate inspection and treatment with the property manager and neighboring units as appropriate, while following local rules and the professional’s instructions.

Final buying checklist

  • Is the exact product registered or otherwise legally exempt, and does its label name bed bugs?
  • Does the label permit treatment of the exact surface or hiding place?
  • Do you need a ready-to-use product, or can you safely measure and apply a concentrate?
  • Does the chemistry or resistance claim make sense for a persistent infestation, without being treated as a guarantee?
  • Have you planned high-heat drying, clutter reduction, inspection, encasements, vacuuming or steam, and monitoring?
  • Do you know the required ventilation, protective equipment, drying time, reentry rules, and disposal instructions?
  • What is your follow-up plan if eggs hatch or activity continues?

Frequently Asked Questions

Which bed bug spray is most likely to work on resistant bed bugs?

CrossFire, PT Alpine, Bedlam Plus, Hot Shot Pyrethroid-Resistant, and Harris Egg Kill & Resistant products all have resistance-related positioning or chemistry that makes them relevant to comparison. None guarantees success against every local population. Resistance, missed harborages, reinfestation, and incorrect application can all cause failure, so persistent infestations warrant a licensed professional assessment.

Can I spray bed bug killer directly on my mattress?

Only if the exact current product label expressly permits mattress treatment, and then only on the listed areas and at the listed application rate. Some products are limited to seams, tufts, folds, or other spot-treatment areas. Never spray people, pets, bedding, or clothing unless the label specifically allows that use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do bed bug sprays kill eggs?

Some products carry label or manufacturer claims for killing eggs, but a single application does not guarantee that every egg in a room was reached or that newly hatched bugs will not appear later. Inspect and follow the product label’s directions for monitoring and repeat treatment.

Are bed bug foggers or bug bombs a good alternative to spray?

No. Foggers can miss the cracks and protected harborages where bed bugs hide, and they introduce fire and exposure hazards. They should not be the sole method of bed bug control.

Should I use two bed bug sprays together?

No, not unless the applicable labels expressly permit the combination. Mixing or layering pesticides can increase exposure and damage without improving control. Choose a label-appropriate product and follow its directions, or ask a licensed professional to design a treatment plan.

How do I know when DIY treatment has failed?

Ongoing live activity after correctly following the label, activity in multiple rooms, repeated sightings in an apartment or multi-unit building, or uncertainty about where bugs are hiding are all reasons to stop repeated DIY spraying and contact a licensed pest-management professional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose CrossFire for a carefully executed concentrate-based program, Bedlam Plus or PT Alpine for targeted aerosol work, Ortho for a convenient consumer spot treatment, Hot Shot Pyrethroid-Resistant for a readily available resistant-bed-bug aerosol, Hot Shot Egg Kill for narrow mattress-seam treatment, Raid MAX for foam delivery into labeled cracks and crevices, and Harris only after verifying the exact product variant and label. Whichever spray you choose, pair it with high-heat drying, inspection, encasements, monitoring, and label-directed follow-up. A spray is a tool in bed bug control—not a guarantee and not a substitute for professional treatment when the infestation is widespread or persistent.
