The safe way to mount a soundbar to a TV is not to drill into the television. Instead, either mount the soundbar to the wall beneath the TV with an approved bracket, or attach a compatible soundbar bracket to the TV’s existing wall mount so the soundbar moves with the screen. The right choice depends on the soundbar model, the TV mount, the wall construction, the combined load, and the clearance required around the TV and soundbar.
Before drilling or loosening an existing TV mount, check the soundbar manual, bracket instructions, weight ratings, hole spacing, cable access, and wall structure. If the TV is large or heavy, already mounted, or installed on a wall with uncertain structure, use a qualified installer.

Two ways to mount a soundbar near a TV
“Mounting a soundbar to a TV” usually describes one of two installations:
- Wall-mounted soundbar: A dedicated bracket is fastened to the wall below the wall-mounted TV. The soundbar and TV are supported separately.
- TV-mount-attached soundbar: A compatible accessory bracket attaches to the existing TV wall mount. The soundbar then travels with the TV when the mount tilts, swivels, or extends.
Do not use the TV enclosure, rear panel, or chassis as structural support for the soundbar. A VESA pattern on the television does not, by itself, prove that every soundbar accessory is compatible. VESA standardizes display-mounting interfaces, but the soundbar accessory, TV mount, soundbar, hardware, and available clearance must still be checked separately. Choose the mounting method

For a separate wall installation, look for a soundbar wall mount bracket that lists your exact soundbar or confirms its weight, hole spacing, dimensions, and required hardware. For a soundbar that should move with an already-mounted TV, a universal soundbar mount for a TV wall mount may be appropriate, but compatibility must be verified before purchase.
Check these details before installation
1. Find the exact soundbar model
Read the soundbar’s installation manual rather than relying only on its external dimensions. Brackets differ in hole spacing, screw size, template placement, maximum weight, cable-channel design, and clearance. Some products require a model-specific accessory. For example, Bose’s TV Speaker instructions use the supplied wall-bracket template and require the template to correspond to the spacing of the speaker’s bottom rubber pads. Sony’s SU-WB1 Sound Bar Bracket is a model-specific system designed for compatible Sony wall mounts and soundbars; its published specifications include support for compatible Sony soundbars up to 8 kg and a 13 mm wall offset. Those specifications do not apply to universal brackets.
2. Add up the complete load
For a wall bracket, the wall fasteners and bracket must support the soundbar’s weight. For a TV-mount-attached bracket, add the weight of the TV, soundbar, accessory bracket, and relevant accessories. The total must remain below the TV mount’s rated capacity.
As one example, SANUS rates its SA405 soundbar mount for soundbars up to 15 lb (6.8 kg), but the TV mount’s total capacity still applies. Review the manufacturer’s SA405 installation documentation and the specifications for your own TV mount. A bracket’s individual rating does not increase the capacity of the TV mount or the wall.
3. Inspect the wall or existing TV mount
For direct wall mounting, identify the wall material and locate studs where possible. Use fasteners intended for that wall type. If a hole does not reach a stud, use an anchor specifically rated for the wall material and expected load; do not substitute an unlabelled or random drywall anchor.
Samsung’s soundbar installation guidance calls for a vertical wall, suitable screws or anchors, and a wall capable of supporting the soundbar. Drill only where you have considered concealed electrical wiring, plumbing, and other services.
4. Plan clearance and cable access
Keep the soundbar centered beneath the screen without covering the picture, the TV’s infrared sensor, or any ventilation opening. If the bar has upward-firing speakers, preserve the manufacturer’s specified space above it. Do not press the bar tightly against the TV simply to make the installation look compact.

Samsung recommends at least 5 cm (2 in) between a wall-mounted TV and the soundbar in the installation covered by its instructions. Treat that as model-specific guidance to be checked against your own manual, not as a universal dimension.
5. Gather the correct tools
Typical tools may include a drill and the bit sizes specified by the bracket, a screwdriver, tape measure, pencil, eye protection, and a level. Depending on the wall, you may also need a stud finder and approved wall anchors. A small bubble level, stud finder, and cable raceway can make layout and cable routing easier, but they do not replace the bracket manufacturer’s hardware or structural requirements.
Method A: Mount the soundbar directly to the wall
This method gives the soundbar its own support and is generally straightforward when the TV is already on the wall but the wall remains accessible.

Turn off and unplug the soundbar, TV, and connected equipment. Keep cables clear of the drilling area.
- Mark the location. Center the manufacturer’s paper template or bracket beneath the TV. Use the TV’s center as the reference, not the apparent center of a nearby cabinet or wall feature. Samsung’s instructions specifically call for aligning the template center line with the TV center.
- Set the height and clearance. Check the required gap below the TV, the soundbar’s depth, the remote sensor, and any upward-firing speaker openings. Make sure the bar will not touch the screen or interfere with the TV mount.
- Level the template or bracket. Use a level before marking the holes. A small error is highly visible when the bar is directly below a horizontal TV.
- Determine the support at each hole. Where possible, fasten into studs. Where that is not possible, use anchors rated for the actual wall material and load. Follow the bracket manual for hole diameter, drilling depth, screw type, and spacing.
- Drill carefully. Wear eye protection and avoid concealed utilities. Do not drill into the TV or use the TV as a drilling reference point.
- Fasten the bracket. Install the specified screws and anchors. Do not overtighten them, and do not replace them with screws of an unapproved length that could damage the soundbar or bracket.
- Connect cables while access is easy. Some manufacturers instruct installers to connect the cables before the soundbar is placed on the wall. Samsung specifically gives that instruction for its installation procedure.
- Attach the soundbar. Engage the soundbar’s mounting points with the bracket and install the retaining screws. Bose’s TV Speaker procedure, for example, includes aligning the speaker with the bracket, securing it with small flat screws, and routing cables through the supplied channel. Follow the procedure for your model.
- Inspect the finished installation. Confirm that the soundbar is level, centered, stable, fully seated, and not pressing against the TV. Gently check for movement without pulling down on the bar.
Method B: Attach the soundbar to the existing TV wall mount
This approach avoids drilling a second set of holes in the wall. It is useful when the TV is already mounted, particularly when the TV uses a compatible tilt or full-motion mount and the soundbar should move with it.
A product such as the SANUS SA405 is an example of a TV-mount-attached accessory. SANUS describes it as compatible with many TV wall mounts and soundbars, with adjustable height and use with full-motion mounts. That description is not a blanket approval for every combination, so check your specific equipment.
- Confirm the combined load. Check the maximum capacity of the existing TV mount, then add the TV, soundbar, bracket, and accessories. The total must remain within the mount’s rating.
- Check the attachment method. Confirm that the accessory is designed for your TV mount and soundbar. Do not assume that a VESA hole pattern alone proves compatibility.
- Read both sets of instructions. The TV mount manual controls which components may be removed or loosened. Do not remove hardware that secures the TV without following the mount’s procedure.
- Support the TV during the work. A wall-mounted TV can shift or fall when mount hardware is loosened. Use the assistance and support method specified by the mount manufacturer; large screens normally require two or more people.
- Attach the soundbar bracket. Use the correct TV-mount hardware and specified hole pattern. Never improvise with bolts that are too long, too short, or of the wrong thread.
- Adjust position. Set the bracket’s height and depth so the soundbar is centered below the screen, clear of the picture and infrared sensor, and not pressed against the TV.
- Check movement and cables. Tilt, swivel, or extend the TV through its full intended range while watching for cable strain, collisions, or a change in balance.
- Recheck security and load. Confirm that all fasteners are tight according to the instructions, the TV remains secure, and the soundbar is fully supported before removing any temporary assistance.
Connect the soundbar after mounting
Preferred connection: HDMI ARC or eARC
Use HDMI ARC or eARC when both the TV and soundbar support it. Connect the cable to the HDMI port on the TV labelled ARC or eARC and to the corresponding HDMI port on the soundbar. Then select the appropriate input on the soundbar and choose HDMI ARC/eARC or the external audio device in the TV’s sound settings.
LG’s official connection guide directs users to connect the soundbar to the TV’s HDMI ARC terminal, select ARC/eARC on the soundbar, and choose the HDMI ARC output device in the TV audio settings. If you need a replacement, choose an HDMI ARC cable for a soundbar or an appropriate HDMI eARC cable only after checking the cable and equipment requirements. A cable cannot add eARC or another feature that the TV or soundbar does not support.

Optical connection
If ARC/eARC is unavailable or unsuitable, use an optical cable supported by both devices. Select optical or digital audio output on the TV and the corresponding input on the soundbar. Optical may not provide every format or control feature available through eARC.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth can work with compatible televisions and soundbars, but pairing steps, supported formats, automatic reconnection, and latency vary by model. For a fixed installation, a wired connection is usually easier to troubleshoot and keeps the audio path independent of wireless pairing.
After connecting, select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output and test several sources, including a streaming app, a broadcast or set-top box, and any connected game console.
Final inspection and testing checklist
- The soundbar is level, centered, stable, and fully seated in its bracket.
- The soundbar does not touch the TV, cover the picture, block the infrared sensor, or obstruct an upward-firing speaker.
- All retaining screws and wall or TV-mount fasteners are installed as specified.
- The TV mount remains within its combined load rating.
- HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, or Bluetooth audio works as intended.
- Volume control, power synchronization, and HDMI-CEC functions have been tested where supported.
- Cables have enough slack for the full tilt, swivel, or extension range, but are not hanging where they can pull on the connectors.
- Power and signal cables are not pinched between the TV, bracket, wall, or soundbar.
- A separate wireless subwoofer is placed according to its own manual rather than mounted with the soundbar by default.
Remote-control reception deserves a specific test. Sony warns that placing a soundbar too close to the TV can interfere with the TV remote sensor. If volume or power commands work inconsistently, check the sensor area and the soundbar’s position before replacing equipment. Sony’s soundbar placement guidance also recommends consulting the soundbar manual for dimensions, tools, procedure, and positioning.

Drilling into the television
The TV enclosure is not a soundbar support structure. Drilling can damage electronics, create an unsafe attachment, and void manufacturer protections. Use the wall or a purpose-designed TV-mount accessory instead.
Buying a universal bracket without measuring
“Universal” does not mean universally suitable. Check soundbar weight, width, depth, mounting points, screw requirements, cable locations, and clearance. A bracket that physically attaches may still block a port, cover the TV sensor, or place the bar in the wrong acoustic position.

Ignoring the combined TV-mount rating
The soundbar bracket’s rating and the TV mount’s rating are separate constraints. Adding a soundbar can exceed the TV mount’s capacity even when the accessory bracket itself is strong enough.
Using the wrong anchors or screws
Drywall, plaster, masonry, and wood framing require different fastening methods. Do not use a generic plastic anchor for a load unless its rating and installation method are appropriate for that wall. Do not use a screw longer than the instructions permit.
Mounting too close to the screen
A narrow gap may look tidy but can obstruct a sensor, interfere with an upward-firing driver, transmit vibration, or conflict with the TV mount’s movement. Follow the soundbar manual and preserve the specified clearance.
Connecting cables too late
A wall-mounted soundbar may leave little room for hands and connectors. Pre-connect cables when the manufacturer recommends it, and plan the cable route before securing the bar.

Stop and get qualified help if the wall’s structure is uncertain, concealed utilities may be in the drilling path, the TV is unusually large or heavy, the existing mount must be lifted or partially removed, or the combined load cannot be verified. The same applies if the wall is damaged, the mount is loose, or you cannot identify the correct hardware.

Sony and LG both emphasize professional installation for TV wall mounting when wall type, structural strength, and model-specific hardware create safety concerns. A professional TV wall-mounting service or qualified home-theater installer is not necessary for every small soundbar, but it is a sensible choice when a falling TV could cause serious injury or property damage.

Can I attach a soundbar directly to the TV?
Do not drill into or fasten structural hardware directly to the television enclosure. Mount the soundbar to the wall below the TV, or use a compatible bracket designed to attach to the TV’s existing wall mount.
How far below the TV should a soundbar be mounted?
Use the soundbar manual’s clearance requirement. Samsung gives at least 5 cm (2 in) for the installation covered by its guidance, but the correct distance varies with the TV, soundbar, remote sensor, and any upward-firing speakers.
Can a soundbar bracket attach to any TV wall mount?
No. Check the accessory’s compatibility with the exact TV mount, soundbar weight, mounting points, hardware, depth, and clearance. A matching VESA pattern alone does not prove compatibility.
Should I use HDMI ARC, optical, or Bluetooth?
Use HDMI ARC or eARC when both devices support it and have correctly labelled ports. Optical is the usual wired alternative. Bluetooth may work, but compatibility, latency, and control features vary by model.
Can the TV mount support the soundbar too?
Only if the TV-mount-attached bracket is designed for that mount and the combined weight of the TV, soundbar, bracket, and accessories remains below the TV mount’s rated capacity.
