Yes, some children may be exposed to semivolatile chemicals released by certain mattresses. But the April 2025 research does not show that every children’s mattress is dangerous, that every child has absorbed a harmful dose, or that mattresses caused illness in the children studied.
The two peer-reviewed studies found chemicals in some new children’s mattresses and higher concentrations of several compounds in the warm, enclosed sleeping area immediately around young children. The responsible conclusion is not to panic or discard every mattress. It is to demand better materials disclosure, consider sensible exposure-reduction steps, and never trade basic fire and safe-sleep requirements for vague chemical-avoidance claims.

The headlines refer to two related studies published in April 2025. One examined children’s sleeping environments in Canadian homes. The other tested chemicals in newly purchased children’s mattresses.
Together, they support a credible source-and-exposure pathway: some mattress materials contain semivolatile organic compounds, and some of those compounds can migrate from the mattress into the air or dust around a sleeping child. The studies do not establish that the measured exposure caused disease.

Study 1: children’s bedrooms and sleeping microenvironments
Researchers sampled 25 Canadian children’s bedrooms, involving children approximately 6 months to 4 years old. They used passive, silicone-based samplers in several locations:
- the sleeping microenvironment immediately around the child, mattress, and bedding;
- the mattress area; and
- more distant bedroom air.
The study detected higher concentrations of two phthalate esters and five organophosphate esters, including different isomers, in mattress samplers than in the sleeping-microenvironment samplers. The authors interpreted that pattern as evidence that mattresses were sources of some of the compounds found near the child. [c001] [c004]

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis is an important distinction. The samplers measured chemicals in the environment; they did not measure what entered a child’s body. The researchers did not take blood or urine samples, calculate each child’s absorbed dose, or assess asthma, development, hormones, cancer, or other health outcomes.
Study 2: 16 new children’s mattresses
The companion study analyzed 16 new foam-and-cover mattresses purchased from major North American retailers in Ontario. Eight mattresses were bought in 2021–2022, and duplicate models were purchased in 2024 when they were available. The researchers also tested two certified mattresses manufactured in the United States.
The products cost approximately CAD$50 to CAD$105. That price range and small sample are relevant: these were not a representative survey of every children’s mattress sold in Canada or North America.
Researchers looked for 45 target chemicals, including:

- organophosphate esters;
- benzophenones; and
- salicylates.
They identified 21 of the 45 target chemicals in mattress covers and/or foam. The presence of a chemical in a mattress does not, by itself, reveal how much reaches indoor air, how long it continues to migrate, or how much a child absorbs. [c002]
What the regulatory findings mean
One mattress exceeded Canada’s 0.1% by-weight regulatory limit for di-n-butyl phthalate, or DnBP, applicable to children’s mattresses. Five mattresses exceeded that same percentage for other phthalates that are regulated in children’s toys but are not necessarily subject to the same limit in every mattress component.
That finding deserves regulatory attention, but it needs to be reported accurately. It does not mean that all five mattresses were necessarily illegal. A chemical can be restricted in one product category and not another, and the applicable rule can depend on the product’s construction, intended use, and jurisdiction.
The researchers also calculated substantial chemical masses for some mattresses, including organophosphate esters and phthalates. Those are estimates of product contents—not measurements of the amount absorbed by a child. [c002] [c005]

The University of Toronto’s description of the research also noted that one detected compound had been banned in Canada since 2014. That is a significant oversight issue, but detection alone does not establish when the product was manufactured, whether the compound was intentionally added, whether a current rule was violated, or how common the finding is across the market. [c003]
Why researchers and headlines use the term “off-gassing”
“Off-gassing” is a convenient public-facing term, although the compounds in these studies are more accurately described as semivolatile organic compounds. They do not behave exactly like highly volatile solvents that evaporate rapidly. Instead, they can migrate gradually out of foam, fabric, coatings, adhesives, and other materials and enter indoor air or settle into dust.
The mattress study used several test conditions:
- sampling at the mattress surface;
- heated mattress conditions;
- added weight;
- combined heat and weight;
- air immediately above the mattress; and
- general room air.
The combined heat-and-weight setup was intended to approximate some conditions created by a sleeping child. For certain compounds, emissions increased under those simulated conditions. That makes the proposed pathway biologically and physically plausible: a child is small, close to the mattress, often warm under bedding, and in contact with the product for many hours.
However, the test was an exposure simulation, not a clinical study. It does not prove that every mattress emits chemicals in the same way, that a particular product will produce a harmful concentration, or that airing out a mattress removes every chemical. [c002] [c003]

Are the chemicals dangerous?
Some of the chemicals and chemical classes detected are legitimate chemicals of concern. Previous toxicology and epidemiology research has linked particular compounds or classes with concerns involving endocrine function, neurodevelopment, reproduction, or respiratory health. But the strength of those associations varies substantially according to the chemical, dose, exposure route, timing, and quality of the evidence.
The mattress studies cannot answer the most important clinical question: whether the measured environmental concentrations caused harm to the children. They did not establish absorbed dose, blood concentrations, urinary metabolites, or health outcomes. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that the research proved children are being poisoned by their mattresses or that the mattresses caused asthma, cancer, developmental disorders, or hormonal effects.
Young children nevertheless warrant particular attention. Compared with adults, they can breathe more air per unit of body mass, spend long periods close to the mattress, have more skin contact relative to body size, and engage in hand-to-mouth behavior. Those factors make the sleeping microenvironment worth studying. They do not convert a measured chemical presence into proof of illness. [c003] [c006] [c007]
The evidence in one sentence: Some mattresses appear to be sources of semivolatile chemicals in the immediate sleeping zone; the studies did not show that the chemicals caused clinical harm to the children studied.

| Some new children’s mattresses contained one or more of 21 detected target chemicals. | That all children’s mattresses contain dangerous levels of chemicals. |
| Mattress materials can contribute chemicals to the air or environment near a sleeping child. | That a child absorbed a harmful dose. |
| Heat and weight can increase emissions of some compounds under simulated conditions. | That every mattress emits the same chemicals or at the same rate. |
| Some findings warrant stronger product disclosure and chemical oversight. | That removing a mattress will improve a child’s health. |
| Children’s close, prolonged contact with mattresses makes the issue worth investigating. | That the mattresses caused asthma, cancer, developmental disorders, endocrine effects, or any other disease. |
The bedroom study covered 25 homes, and the mattress study covered 16 products, largely in Ontario. The researchers did not test every major mattress material or identify the contribution of every item in the sleeping space. Bedding, toys, flooring, dust, and other furnishings can also affect indoor chemical measurements.
The studies also did not provide a large, age-stratified comparison showing how emissions change as mattresses get older. Nor did they establish that a mattress marketed as “organic” has no chemical emissions. [c001] [c002]

Fire safety is not the opposing side of this debate
Parents should not remove fire-safety considerations from the decision. In the United States, federal mattress requirements focus primarily on flammability performance:
- 16 C.F.R. Part 1632 covers resistance to cigarette smoldering.
- 16 C.F.R. Part 1633 covers open-flame performance.
- Part 1633 limits peak heat release to 200 kilowatts during the 30-minute test and total heat release to 15 megajoules during the first 10 minutes.
These rules specify performance and testing requirements. They do not require every manufacturer to use a particular chemical flame retardant. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has also stated that it has not banned additive, non-polymeric organohalogen flame retardants as a class in mattresses and mattress pads, although other rules may restrict particular chemicals or products.

NIST has reported substantial reductions in bed-fire deaths and injuries after compliant mattresses meeting the U.S. open-flame standard entered the market. Any buying advice that treats fire performance as unimportant is incomplete. [c008] [c009] [c010]
What parents should do now
1. Do not panic or automatically discard a mattress
The new studies are a reason to ask better questions, not proof that every existing mattress is an immediate danger. Replacing a mattress solely because it is not labeled “organic” can create unnecessary cost and waste without demonstrating a health benefit.
Prioritize concrete safety issues first: recalls, correct dimensions, appropriate firmness, an intact cover, visible damage, contamination, and whether the product is being used according to the applicable child-sleep guidance.
2. For a crib, check fit and firmness before chemical claims
A crib mattress should be firm, fit snugly in the crib, and be used as directed by the manufacturer. Do not add a soft topper or use a loose accessory to solve a chemical concern. A product that has appealing materials but does not fit correctly can create a more immediate safety problem.
3. Ask for a product-specific materials disclosure
When shopping for a replacement, ask the manufacturer for a complete materials list rather than relying on broad phrases such as “clean,” “natural,” or “non-toxic.” Useful questions include:
- Does the mattress contain added chemical flame retardants?
- Does it contain fiberglass?
- Does it use polyurethane foam?
- Does it contain PVC or vinyl?
- Are PFAS treatments used on the cover or other components?
- What adhesives, coatings, and waterproof layers are present?
- Which components are certified, and to what standard?
- Can the manufacturer provide the certification license or product number?
A named material and verifiable certification are more informative than a general promise that a mattress is “non-toxic.” A disclosure also lets a buyer compare products without assuming that one marketing word guarantees a health outcome.
4. Treat “organic” as a claim to verify, not a complete safety conclusion
For shoppers comparing an organic crib mattress, look for the complete certification label and a license number that can be checked in the Global Organic Textile Standard’s public database. GOTS certification can restrict materials and chemical inputs within the certified scope, but it does not mean that the product contains no chemicals whatsoever or that it has been proven to improve children’s health.
Check what the certification covers. A cover, textile layer, filling, and foam core may not all be covered by the same certification, and “made with organic materials” is not identical to certification of the finished mattress.

5. Use a properly fitted protector when appropriate
A washable, properly fitted crib mattress protector can create a physical barrier against direct contact and make cleaning easier. Choose one designed for the specific mattress and crib, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and ensure it does not compromise fit or firmness.
An organic cotton crib mattress protector may appeal to families trying to minimize added materials. But the studies did not test whether any particular protector eliminates inhalation exposure or prevents all semivolatile chemicals from migrating through the mattress. A protector is a contact and spill-management measure—not an off-gassing neutralizer.
6. Ventilate a new mattress according to the instructions
If a new mattress has a noticeable odor, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for unpacking and ventilation. Good ventilation may reduce odors and some airborne emissions, but the research does not establish a universal airing-out period or prove that ventilation removes all chemicals.
Do not spray the mattress with an unverified “detoxifying,” antimicrobial, fragrance, or fire-retardant treatment. Adding a product can introduce additional chemicals and may affect the mattress’s cover, warranty, flammability performance, or safe use.
7. Ask a clinician about symptoms rather than diagnosing exposure by smell
If a child has persistent respiratory symptoms, unusual irritation, or a known chemical sensitivity, discuss the symptoms with a pediatric clinician. Smell alone cannot identify a particular chemical or establish that a mattress caused the problem. A clinician can help assess other possible sources and decide whether the mattress should be replaced or removed from use.
Examples of more transparent product approaches
If a mattress already needs replacing for age, damage, fit, contamination, or recall reasons, families can compare products that publish specific material and certification information. This is a transparency and exposure-reduction approach, not a claim that any brand guarantees better health.
For example, Naturepedic describes its children’s and crib mattresses as using GOTS-certified organic materials and as having no polyurethane foam, chemical flame retardants, or fiberglass. Avocado describes its Eco Organic Crib Mattress as using GOTS-certified wool as a naturally fire-resistant layer and as containing no fiberglass or chemical flame retardants. These are manufacturer claims that should be checked against the current product documentation, certification scope, model, and availability. They are not independent clinical proof that either product eliminates exposure or prevents disease.
A washable protector can be a more modest purchase. Avocado describes an organic cotton crib mattress protector as having no added flame retardants and as being tested to the federal mattress-pad flammability standard. That may be relevant for contact protection and cleaning, but it should not be represented as stopping all off-gassing. [c011] [c012] [c013] [c014] [c015] [c016] [c017]
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What manufacturers and specifiers should do
The strongest long-term response is better information at the product level. Manufacturers should disclose the materials and chemical treatments used in the cover, foam, barriers, adhesives, and fire-safety components; identify the scope and license number of third-party certifications; and explain how the finished product meets flammability requirements.
Retailers and specifiers should avoid treating “organic,” “natural,” or “non-toxic” as substitutes for a bill of materials. They should preserve model-specific documentation because formulations and suppliers can change between production runs.
For construction and healthy-building professionals, a mattress is a furnishing rather than a building assembly, but the indoor-air principle is familiar: source control, material transparency, ventilation, and realistic exposure assessment are more useful than fear-based labels. A building cannot be called healthier simply because one item is marketed as chemical-free, especially when that phrase has no agreed meaning.

The practical conclusion
The April 2025 studies deserve attention because they found measurable semivolatile chemicals in some children’s mattresses and elevated concentrations in the close sleeping environment of young children. They also show why mattress testing under heat and weight matters: a product can be a source even when general bedroom air measurements are lower.
But the evidence stops short of proving that mattresses are making children sick. The studies did not measure internal dose or health outcomes, did not represent the entire mattress market, and did not show that replacing a mattress improves health.
The proportionate response is to keep the mattress that is safe, intact, correctly fitted, and not recalled; investigate a replacement when there is a concrete reason; ask for full materials disclosure; verify certifications; ventilate new products as directed; use a suitable protector; and preserve fire and safe-sleep requirements. That approach takes the research seriously without turning an important environmental-health question into an unsupported emergency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I throw away my child’s mattress because of these studies?
Not solely because of the headlines. Check recalls, fit, firmness, damage, contamination, odor, age, and manufacturer guidance first. If replacement is already appropriate, compare products with specific materials disclosures and verifiable certifications, but do not assume that an organic label guarantees better health.
Did the studies prove that children absorbed dangerous doses?
No. The researchers measured chemicals in bedroom and mattress environments using passive samplers and product tests. They did not measure blood levels, urinary metabolites, absorbed dose, or health outcomes in the children.
Does a mattress protector stop off-gassing?
There is no evidence in these studies that a particular protector eliminates inhalation exposure or prevents all semivolatile chemicals from migrating. A properly fitted protector can help with direct contact, spills, and cleaning, provided it preserves the mattress’s firmness and fit.
Does an organic mattress contain no chemicals?
No. Organic certification can restrict materials and chemical inputs within its certified scope, but every mattress is made from materials and may contain chemicals. Verify the complete certification label, license number, covered components, and product-specific materials list.
Are flame retardants required in every mattress?
In the United States, federal mattress rules primarily specify flammability performance under 16 C.F.R. Parts 1632 and 1633; they do not require every manufacturer to use a particular chemical flame retardant. Fire safety remains essential, and chemical claims should be evaluated alongside compliance and performance.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Some children’s mattresses can release chemicals into the close sleeping environment, but the April 2025 studies did not prove that every mattress is dangerous or that the children studied were harmed. Use the findings to demand transparent materials and certification information—not to panic, discard a safe mattress without a reason, or compromise crib firmness, fit, or fire safety.
