How clear ice molds work
Clear ice is primarily a freezing-direction problem, not simply a water-purity problem. Water contains dissolved air and other impurities. In a conventional tray, freezing begins at multiple exposed surfaces and moves inward. The last water to freeze can concentrate air and impurities in the center, producing the familiar cloudy core.

As the ice front advances, dissolved air and impurities are pushed toward the remaining liquid or a sacrificial waste section. Once the clear portion is frozen, it can be separated from the cloudy material and served.
Ordinary tray: freezing advances inward from several exposed surfaces, often trapping a cloudy center.
Directional system: insulation limits side and bottom freezing, concentrating the cloudy portion away from the finished clear section.
This is why a product’s shape alone is not proof that it makes clear ice. A standard silicone sphere mold can produce a round ball while leaving it cloudy. Viski’s ordinary Glacier Ice Sphere Molds, for example, are food-safe silicone sphere molds, but the product information does not describe the insulated, directional-freezing mechanism used by the Glacier Rocks Clear Ice Maker.

Why boiling, distilled, or bottled water is not a complete solution
Changing the water may sometimes affect taste or the appearance of small imperfections, but it does not solve the fundamental freezing pattern. Boiling, distilling, or buying bottled water alone does not guarantee clear ice because the water can still freeze from multiple directions and trap air in the center.
Several of the systems above explicitly say that ordinary tap water is suitable. The mold’s insulation and freezing direction matter more than starting with expensive water. Use the water recommended by the maker, particularly if local water has a strong taste, but do not pay a premium for water expecting it to replace directional freezing.

1. Start with your required output

- A small home bar: True Cubes gives four large cubes per batch.

2. Match the shape to the drink

How to use a clear ice mold successfully
- Check the complete footprint. Make sure the assembled system fits level in the freezer and that the freezer door or drawer can close without pressing against it.
- Use the maker’s fill instructions. Most of the systems in this guide are designed to work with tap water, but do not overfill a reservoir or substitute a different assembly method.
- Freeze for the recommended period. Several hours may be enough for smaller cubes, while large cubes and insulated systems can require overnight or more than a day.
- Separate the clear ice from the waste section. Directional systems commonly leave the cloudy portion in a lower or sacrificial area. Do not serve that waste block simply because it is frozen.
- Temper the finished ice before serving. True Cubes specifically recommends one to two minutes at room temperature. This reduces the chance of cracking when very cold ice meets a warmer cocktail.
- Handle large pieces carefully. Use the system’s lift tabs or release method. Avoid forcing a stuck piece with a sharp kitchen tool, which can damage the mold or cause an injury.
Common problems and what they mean
The ice is cloudy throughout
First check whether the product is actually a directional-freezing system. A standard sphere or novelty mold may create the desired shape without controlling the freezing direction. If it is a directional system, confirm that the insulating sleeve, tray, and mold are assembled as instructed and that the system was not overfilled. Switching from tap water to distilled water is not a substitute for correcting the freezing setup.
The cube cracked as soon as it reached the drink
Temperature shock is the likely explanation. Give the cube a short tempering period before placing it in the cocktail; True Cubes recommends one to two minutes. A very cold cube entering a warm drink can crack even when the ice is otherwise clear.

The mold does not fit or freezes unevenly
Measure the entire assembled unit, not just the silicone insert. Keep it level and leave the clearance specified by the manufacturer. A crowded freezer, an obstructed sleeve, or an assembly that is not seated correctly can interfere with the intended top-down freezing path.
The product is unavailable
Do not assume that an older listing reflects current stock. Check the manufacturer’s live product page, look for a current replacement or alternate configuration, and consider whether the mold’s accessories or inserts are still supported.
